Block request

Ultradude, I can't do this anymore. Please block me indefinitely once you read this. I won't be editing anymore, and I can't. I have a freaking addiction... and I'm getting this reactive mentality that no one's acknowledging me on my contributions. I don't know why it had to come to this. Thanks, and editing this wiki was nice. Keep up your awesome work and same with the others. - Asterick6 08:21, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Are you sure? ultradude25 (T|C) at 12:47, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
I don't know man... I don't know if you guys appreciate me being here or what, but I don't think I have the luxury to continue doing this. It's taking up too much of my time, and I can't control myself. There's just too much stuff here to fix cause there aren't enough editors. I really think you need to recruit some more people. This isn't enough. Recruit more people please; from the forums, sites, chat, IRC, idk. - Asterick6 19:30, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
You've done a lot of great cleaning up of pages, which a lot of people can't be bothered doing. Although I think the problem is, you're too much of a perfectionist. You change a lot of things that make absolutely no difference (e.g. adding upper-case to template inclusions) instead of focusing on improving the article's content. Although you still do plenty of the latter, but you would have extra time if you didn't bother with the former.
I do this too, but I have the free time to spare (and I'm certainly addicted to wiki editing too :D).
While more editors would be nice, the wiki really isn't that bad. There's plenty of things that I wouldn't mind changing, but the world isn't going to end if I don't. Perfecting grammar and readability of articles is nice, but remember the common age for player's of Minecraft, it's mostly kids and teenagers, both of which aren't really going to care if the wiki is in perfect English.
Spend time on making sure the article has the content it should first, before worrying about other things. ultradude25 (T|C) at 19:48, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
It isn't commented on much, but the work you (and all the other regular contributors) put in is definitely appreciated. Wikis are a continual work in progress; we don't have to get everything perfect before some arbitrary deadline, so you shouldn't feel pressure to do anything if you don't want to. I know the feeling of getting too caught up in something; take a break from it for a week or so, and see how you feel about it then. It's just a game, not worth burning yourself out over.Bleh, having trouble writing fluently today; hopefully my point comes across. -- Orthotope 20:10, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Deathcube

Hey you deleted my article about Deathcube and im wondering about that because it's on the german wiki for more then 5 months now.

Baba43 19:21, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

It's against the rules. If the German wiki isn't enforcing the rules, that's their choice. ultradude25 (T|C) at 20:01, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
Okay but why do you have this rule? Minigames are funny and there is no reason to forbid people to share their ideas. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by ?Baba43 (Talk|Contribs) 20:16, 4 April 2012. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
Because this is a wiki, not a forum. ultradude25 (T|C) at 20:40, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Could you make some renders for me?

Hey, UltraDude, I was wondering if you could render the Enderman with a block of mycelium instead of grass (Make sure you save it at a separate location, of course,) as well as an isometric render of my (codegeek98's) skin. I would like to use them for my userpage. JamesTheAwesomeDude 00:22, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

You already asked me once. I can do the skin, but not the Enderman. ultradude25 (T|C) at 00:23, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
You never responded the first time. (That's why I asked again.) Thank you, however, for the skin render. Could you make it high-resolution? (Please don't anti-alias it) JamesTheAwesomeDude 01:29, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
Yes I did. What resolution do you call high resolution? Also I can't actually do anything unless you give me the skin. ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:05, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
High-res: probably 632*1540. Also, my skin is here. (You can go to minershoes.com to find the skin of any minecraft user. All you need is their username.) JamesTheAwesomeDude 15:18, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

The transparency failed. Other than that, It's good. JamesTheAwesomeDude 20:52, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
The transparency works, it's just when the wiki resizes it that it doesn't show up. For some reason the wiki just won't resize compressed images properly. ultradude25 (T|C) at 20:55, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
Could you upload it to Imgur so I can give a whack at the transparency issue? JamesTheAwesomeDude 01:37, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Why? It's fixed, I just didn't compress it this time. ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:39, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Cool. Thank you so much! (Which program did you compress it with? Try GIMP.) JamesTheAwesomeDude 22:09, 10 April 2012 (UTC) EDIT: It's not fixed for me; I still have the wierd non-isometric rendering of the skin... JamesTheAwesomeDude 22:34, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Minecraft Wiki:Sandbox

Hiya! just messaging all other admins about my project, the Minecraft Wiki:Sandbox.
This sandbox initiative is going to try to gauge what the community wants page-wise, and where they want the wiki to go.
the plan is to use that, and see if the wiki can go that way, if our rules need improving, or if it is not viable to go in certain directions with the wiki.
So, there will be many pages that break our current rules, that will be located at "Minecraft Wiki:Sandbox/PAGENAMES".
I'm just messaging to request, unless it is blatant spam, please don't delete these pages.
There is a system to delete these pages if they are too low quality, or not active enough, and a system to tell users what has been deleted, and why. as well as informing them if a page will never be reconsidered. This section of the wiki is to see if we can push the rules, and if we should we push the rules.
I welcome other admins to help take part in this project, to see how the wiki can viably adapt to the community.
Have a good day! :) --Kizzycocoa 22:26, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Template assistance

I've been working on a row entry template for the Mods page, modeled after Programs and editors/entry, currently at User:Orthotope/workbench. For the Required API column, I tried to make it use {{tc|no}} if the field is blank or 'no', and {{tc|yes|{{{api}}} }} for any other text (ModLoader, Forge, etc.), but couldn't figure out how to make it work properly. As you're much more skilled with templates, I'm wondering if you can see how to do it, or if it's really a good idea (as it prevents using any other tc| options). -- Orthotope 08:25, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Done. However I think allowing custom tc options would be better. Some things might only require API for some features.
You could still have it use no or yes automatically if the tc template isn't manually included which would have the best usability. ultradude25 (T|C) at 11:06, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Thank you very much! -- Orthotope 18:08, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Image Mass Revertion

I'm sure you're fairly aware of the issue of people unknowingly re-re-reverting the same image multiple times due to their cache not updating. Is it possible that a warning could be added so that new people would know not to constantly revert images if it doesn't work the first 4 times? Or at least ask them to check the file size and image parameters of the picture to clarify if it really is the same image. --HexZyle from the Spiral Knights wiki 01:42, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Minicraft

So I've come back to playing minecraft again (Damn it's addictive) and I hope I'm not overstepping the boundaries of my "retired" status. I guess I'm no longer editing the wiki as vigorously as I used to. I just casually come by here whenever I wanna check somethin' out and clean up a few things on my way through. If I'm going to be making a few small edits here and there, should I remove my "retired" status?

Anyway, that's not what I came here for. I know it's been nearly a month, but I saw you cleared out the Minicraft page, stating that it's not part of minecraft. I'd like to suggest the page's recreation. I really don't like to use WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS, but there is a page for Minecraft 4k. Sure you could say that it's more minecrafty due to the 3Dness of it and the FPS view is almost identical, but Minicraft shares so many similarities with minecraft in the game mechanics, rather than the visuals. It seems to be simply a top down 2D version of minecraft. The crafting system is what Mojang is designing the Xbox and Pocket crafting versions to be, and the fact that Notch likes his games to be mysterious and not leave any instructions for the game (let the players figure everything out themselves) means that a wiki page would be reasonably handy for it.

We even have a few modders working on it.

If you still say "no" to a mainspace page, would I allowed to set up a page for it in my userpage, and possibly direct users there? If so, what would be the reasonable limit to the page's expanse? --HexZyle 01:24, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Minicraft is based on Minecraft, whereas Minecraft 4k is Minecraft, but made to be really really small. It is already mentioned on Notch's page, which I think is enough, but maybe you should hold a discussion on the community portal to see what other people think.
As for a userpage, well they're basically limitless, so you can do what you want there. ultradude25 (T|C) at 10:50, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
Hmm. Good point. And I'll see if I'm not too lazy to get round there and ask :P --HexZyle 15:30, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

Skin

Ultradude25, thank you very much for destroying the look of the Minecraft Wiki and turning it into an ugly, generic website that looks just like that Minecraft Forums! D:< -Anew742 –The preceding undated comment was added on 03:39, 2 May 2012 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

The Minecraft Wiki never had a 'look', it was just the default mediawiki skin (which couldn't possibly be any less generic than something Minecraft related). I would've liked to install an extension that allows you to toggle the skin from the options (or possibly other skins, if more designs were made), but Curse wants everyone using the same style. ultradude25 (T|C) at 05:19, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Crash Template Additions

Thanks for your additions! But do you have any idea how we can get it to parse text that includes characters like "="? If there are error reports that include that character it screws up the template, and people have to add a second <pre> tag themselves. --Mattrition 09:22, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Equals are allowed if you already have a parameter passed (as long as you don't use a pipe character somewhere afterwards of course), so the easiest way is to just pass the numbered parameter instead of relying on anonymous parameters. I'll update the page now. ultradude25 (T|C) at 09:51, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh cool, well that solves that issue. It's a bit annoying that we can't tell the template that we want to parse a literal string without forcing nonplussed users to use their own <pre> blocks though. Thanks for the help! --Mattrition 10:56, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Block Renders as SVG Images

Hello, ultradude25. As I was looking at random pages on here, I noticed that your block renders are not in the SVG format.

I'm willing to make them all into SVG images. Of course they would still all look the exact same, but they would be in a scalable format. But I wanted your input on it before I started.

Cheers, Clarince63 15:08, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm not ultradude25, but in my opinion this would be a bad thing.
- older browsers can't read SVG files
- is it really needed?
- they'll probably have slightly different looks
Calinou - talk × contribs » 15:48, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your input, Calinou. But let me correct some points you made.
>older browsers can't read SVG files
While that is correct, but not completely accurate. Head on over to the Health and Damage page and hover over any one of the hearts. The file extension is svg. But the actually file on the page is rendered in the png file format.
>is it really needed?
It isnt urgent, but I think it would be a welcome addition to the pages that showcase a block render.
>they'll probably have slightly different looks
I could make it look exactly the same. Same colours, isometric view angle and everything.
--Clarince63 16:19, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
MediaWiki is capable of rendering SVG files to PNG. This is how SVG images in articles on Wikipedia work. The advantage of the SVG format would be that an isometric block can be presented at any scale without any resizing artifacts. I'm not sure how much that matters for our purposes, though. We could, for example, make :File:Sand.png and :File:Grid Sand.png the same image, but Grid Sand.png is (I assume) specifically exactly how Minecraft renders the block, which is relevant since that is how the block appears in-game and a different-in-the-pixels rendering might hurt recognizability. —kpreid 16:26, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
How difficult would it be to create? I'd like to know how to make them in SVG so I can update images when needed if we did do this.
This would also be quite a big job with not that much of a benefit. We mostly use the renders at 150px (or 25px on the data values page), so higher resolutions would rarely be used, so it doesn't seem worth the effort. Also, you wouldn't be able to convert the animated images.
@kpreid: we wouldn't be able to combine the block grid images, because they're direct screenshots from the game with no AA. However, item images could be replaced, this could possibly allow us to combine the grid version, the 150px article version and the spritesheet version into one image. However, I'd also have to make the grid template compatible with spritesheets, and it'd have to know when to use them or standard images (since this would only be done for items), so I'd have to also have to get it to check against a list of every item in the game. I was actually thinking of doing that at some point anyway, so we can easily change what page the template automatically links to for each image, without having to rename the image. ultradude25 (T|C) at 18:08, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
It wouldn't be very difficult, if anything it would be very tedious. The program I use for SVG images is InkScape. It is free and open source.
If you want me to start converting them to SVG I will be more than willing. If not, that's fine as well. I just wanted to call it to your attention.
If you want me to do it at a later time, feel free to drop me an email. (I check my email often) --Clarince63 19:22, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
You could try uploading one and see how it comes out, but I don't think it is worth the effort. Plus when I tried it (I had to do it manually since inkscape doesn't have a dimetric grid), the created image had noticeable seems between the faces. ultradude25 (T|C) at 20:38, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

CSS request

In case you missed it, MediaWiki talk:Common.css#Adverts forcing horizontal scrollbar on smaller screen resolutions. Since the top advert section (div.atflb) is already auto width, adding the bottom advert section (div.btflb) would fix the horizontal scroll issue. Thanks BryghtShadow 11:49, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Actually that is only going to give you an extra ~100px, the Curse footer still takes up a lot more room than it needs to, and since I'm not a Curse employee I don't know if I'm allowed to change either. ultradude25 (T|C) at 12:08, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Here's a screenshot of what I mean. :File:BryghtShadow_Curse_CSS_fix_request_proof.jpg That very ~100px is the difference between having the horizontal scroll bar show up or not. I'm running on 1366x768 resolution. The fact is, MCWiki has inline harcoded 1200px advert sections, unlike other Curse hosted wikis. For example, Terraria Wiki has
<div class{{=}}"atflb" style{{=}}"text-align:center;padding-top:10px;"> [...] <div class{{=}}"btflb" style{{=}}"text-align:center;padding-top:10px;">
as opposed to MCWiki which has
<div style{{=}}"text-align: center; padding: 5px; width: 1200px; margin: 0 auto;" class{{=}}"btflb">
As for whether being Curse employee does affect your ability to fix this, here's what I suppose is enough evidence for the change? div.atflb { width:auto !important; } was imported during this revision: [1] And as such, I really cannot see why you wouldn't have the permission to apply such a tweak. If it is not the case that you have permission to apply this fix, I suppose I'll have to ask a Curse staff. BryghtShadow 13:08, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Whether or not the community admins have the ability to make changes to things, does not mean they are allowed to unless directed, which in this case they haven't been. The other Curse wikis also do not have a right hand sidebar, which is why their code is different than say Terraria. You can feel free to make the changes in your personal css, but there will be no global changes to the styles or positioning of the ads. Sorry. -- Wynthyst Image:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 13:20, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Page error

Some pages on the Chinese Wiki seems a little bit strange (i.e. :zh:????). The MediaWiki:Common.css and Vector.css are up to date, and it only happens to some pages, so can you help us fix it? Thanks.—Powup333 ZH Admin 20:19, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

You updated your navbox to our copy, but you're still using the old method of writing navbox templates (dot template and HTML comments). When I updated the navbox, I intended for the old method to still work since it may not be ideal in some cases, however it seems I broke that while trying to get child navboxes to work correctly. I'll try to get it working correctly, but in the meantime, you should upgrade your navbox templates, the syntax is a lot easier with the new method, and as a bonus, it wraps correctly in IE. ultradude25 (T|C) at 21:01, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Ok,thanks again!—Powup333 ZH Admin 00:16, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

ummm, it seems like the new version of Template:Navbox is still causing page errors on the Chinese Wiki, I have tested with an IE core browser and the Chrome browser, the same error shows up, it only happens to some pages though, and it is strange that a page with no navbox templates can have this error as well, I have taken a screenshot to show you. —Powup333 ZH Admin 21:19, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

I've tested in Firefox, Chrome, Opera an IE and that problem doesn't show up on that page (also, it does have a navbox). ultradude25 (T|C) at 04:38, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Really? Well that was interesting since I was not the only one who has get that error, and it happens on Chinese wiki only. Also, I didn't find the history that you save the new version of navbox on the Chinese wiki, it only shows up when the new version is saved.—Powup333 ZH Admin 01:38, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I might be a little bit unclear last time, what I mean is that we have reverted the template back to the old version so the error doesn't shows up. To see the error, the new version of the template must be saved first.—Powup333 ZH Admin 19:29, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
As I said originally, your navboxes still have the old syntax. You can't have the new template with the old syntax, because I haven't worked out how to fix that yet. ultradude25 (T|C) at 13:16, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
Ah, I have figured out a way to let both the old and new version co-exist at the same time so we can have time to change it all using the new template, and I find there is a small issue about the new version, it is that there is a extra • at the end of each group.—Powup333 ZH Admin 01:18, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Only way that could happen is if you use a browser that doesn't support last-child (and if you browser is that old, this entire page would probably look broken).
Aside from IE8 though, I faked last-child support for that. ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:33, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Template updating

Ultradude, can you update the See also and Main templates to allow more than 1 article linking, probably up to 5? The main Minecraft article will be able to use this functionality as well as other articles. - Asterick6 01:13, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Hmm, with the title parameter there, that makes it a bit difficult. Maybe I should remove that, or change it to a named parameter? ultradude25 (T|C) at 06:08, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
Done, titles now use the title<num> parameter. ultradude25 (T|C) at 06:59, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Blender

Hello, sir. You say you use Blender for making those nice block renders. I was able to create the same effect, but I cannot quite figure out how to get a different texture on each side, rather than just one on every side, if you know what I mean. I have little experience with Blender, and I haven't seen my pro Blender using brother in a while. Any assistance would be appreciated. :) Cossacksson Talk Cont 05:07, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Select edit mode, and you can select each face individually. Then you can move each part of the UV wrap individually.
Off-topic: The border on your sig is too large, it's covering up text. You'll need to make it smaller (I've changed it to 3px, which fits in better). ultradude25 (T|C) at 06:06, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your help, sir. I am also appreciative for changing my sig. I was going to do it myself... But every day I fell asleep before I could or something. Good night. :) Cossacksson Talk Cont 06:33, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

I find it quite funny. I was going to block this guy yesterday after he vandalised some images (and for just general stupidity), but I left it just to see what kind of crazy reason he'd come up with to try to get admin. Unfortunately it seems he's now just spamming random (wikipedia?) templates in his userspace and changing colours of other templates without discussion, which is rather boring. ultradude25 (T|C) at 15:05, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

I wouldn't recommend it. Sprites are very annoying and fiddly to work with, and only give a benefit if you're using the images on loads of pages (the images we have as sprites are used on almost every article in the wiki, so they are worth the annoyance). ultradude25 (T|C) at 14:07, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Automated signature signing bot

Ultradude, can you create/import an automated signing bot like SineBot to sign all these unsigned comments left by new users? This can make the page a hell lot more organized (with time stamps and user labels to distinguish which comments are from who) and spare others from having to to sign for them. It's not hard to do is it? Thanks - Asterick6 (talk) 23:30, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

How can we run a bot that is not released to public? Also don't those sorts of bots run on the server, not the client? ultradude25 (T|C) at 23:50, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Ah my bad, forgot about that slight problem. I'm not sure; I thought all bots ran on the server and not on the client? - Asterick6 (talk) 01:20, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Depends on how you define a bot. AWB runs on the client, but most bots would be run on a server (unless you like leaving your computer on 24/7), but I don't know if those larger bots would actually be run on Wikipedia's servers. Either way, I doubt anyone has a server lying around to put a bot on (I doubt my webhost would like me running a process 24/7), so it'd probably have to be hosted on Curse's servers. ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:33, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Minecraft: Mating

Hello,

I realise that was probably quite funny... however I was planning to use unlinked Wiki entries as a feature submission to Minecraft. Was about to add more when it was deleted... see my talk page for more information. Then inter-linked entries for the other parts of the article as I flesh them out. Initially the idea began as humor however it has developed. I think it could be done as an extension to existing breeding mechanism and would add an interesting dynamic to the environment -Jarvil (talk)

Image Compression

Hello Ultradude, What program do you use to compres images? Or how do you do it? I'd like to know ^^ --Dyon 16:01, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

I've been using PNGMonster. There's also PNGGauntlet which looks pretty good, but I haven't actually tried it. ultradude25 (T|C) at 18:36, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
Thank you, I always used OptiPNG. I testing right now which program is the best! --Dyon 20:37, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
EDIT: Seems like PNGMonster is the best ^^ However, PNGGauntlet got more features and options, if you maybe edit some options in PNGGauntlet is would be better. --Dyon 20:42, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) The thing about PNG compression, there's no "one size fits all" compression algorithm. It really depends on the content of the image, therefore just using something like OptiPNG won't always give you the best results, instead you need programs that try all the different algorithms per image to see which one works best for it (both PNGMonster and PNGGauntlet use OptiPNG as one of their tested algorithms). This also means PNG compression is often pretty slow.
Quick note about PNGMonster, if the compressed result of the image is actually larger than the original (better algorithm was used before PNGMonster was run), it will still output the larger image. So just be careful with that. ultradude25 (T|C) at 20:44, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Wood slab renders

Wood slabs have been out for a while now, but with no real render yet, just a recoloring. I've seen you've made a lot of renders for more recent stuff like cocoa pods and ender chests, but I don't see any change or upload of wooden slabs. Just thought I'd bring that up if you forgot about them. Funky3000 01:08, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Gravel texture

You should keep the previous texture for gravel until the new one is implemented in the official game. Frogjg2003 22:57, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

The wiki always displays the most up-to-date content. For text, it's easy to say that "In snapshot X, this was changed", but you can't easily do that for an image, plus it would add a lot of extra size to the infobox, so we just display the latest image and have the old texture in trivia or the gallery. ultradude25 (T|C) at 23:04, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
The thing is that this isn't an "old texture." It's still used in the official version. It is up-to-date for the users who run the snapshots, but it isn't "real" for the users that only play the official version (like me). As for keeping the infobox from getting too big, you still will only use one image, just the official, not snapshot, version. Frogjg2003 21:27, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Everything on the wiki is based on the latest snapshot version, including images. Just because it doesn't go through the launcher's updater, doesn't make it any less "official".
If we were to wait until the version is added to the launcher, then we'd have heaps of information to update before the wiki is actually up to date, and usable by everyone using the latest version. It's far better to update the wiki as the snapshots are released, then the only information we have to update on "official" release, is changes from the latest snapshot (if any).
It's not exactly ideal, but in the long run it means the wiki is more correct for the majority of players. ultradude25 (T|C) at 21:54, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Ok, but I just want to know where you get the information that the majority of players use the snapshots. Frogjg2003 23:19, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
I never said they did... ultradude25 (T|C) at 23:33, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
"...in the long run it means the wiki is more correct for the majority of players."Frogjg2003 00:07, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
What makes you think that is talking about people using snapshots? The point of changing the information now is so the wiki is already almost completely updated when the official release happens, thus in the long run benefiting the majority of players. ultradude25 (T|C) at 00:14, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
From the context of the original discussion Frogjg2003 00:24, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
The previous sentence is talking about having to update the wiki when the update is official, so it should be obvious the next sentence is talking about that. ultradude25 (T|C) at 00:27, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Block Rendering

Hey! I was looking at the block renders and I really like them.

I mean I'm not sure how good this method would be for say animated images, but for the images that are not animated, I think this method would make providing a render much easier.

That way, we would only need 1 image, 4 at most. And the block would be formed with the css. This method is supported on all browsers and would establish uniformity throughout all pages without having to worry about certain images not looking the same as the others.

Although you do a very good job at doing just that. This was kinda more for me lol. MAYBE I COULD MAKE AN ONLINE TOOL FOR MAKING BLOCK RENDERS >=D

What say you? Please reply.

http://www.w3schools.com/css3/css3_2dtransforms.asp

Starport592 06:35, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

An interesting idea. I'm not sure how well it would work though. As discussed a few topics up, vector type things don't seem to work very well for very pixel perfect 3D things like cubes. In the SVG version I attempted, you would always get visible seams between the faces of the cube, and I would think the same might happen here.
Also, transforms are not supported in IE8, which would need some way to fall back to plain images, so we'd have to render the images either way.
I'd actually like to try an online tool for creating basic block renders, so it'd be easy for mod authors, etc. to render their block textures (or so someone can easily render an official block if I'm not around). ultradude25 (T|C) at 07:09, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
A few potential issues: Does a skew transform actually generate the same results as a proper render? (Possibly a stupid question, I'm not too familiar with 3D rendering.) Also, can CSS change the brightness of the different faces of the cube? With Netherrack, for example, it would be very hard to distinguish the faces if they were all at the same brightness. If we'd have to upload three versions of each texture to make a CSS-based render look good, that's more effort than it's worth. -- Orthotope 08:54, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Can't say, as I've never bothered with them. The font rendering of (3D) transformed elements are too buggy looking (on Firefox). ultradude25 (T|C) at 00:23, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I've given up on the CSS thing. The shading wouldn't be there without me having to spend more time on it. I really think it's all just positioning. That CSS plus some javascript and you could make a working browser render. Of course, seams may pop up and whatnot, but that's only if you don't align the images nice and snug. Scaling the image should not be a problem. I was able to get a nice smooth skew with these methods and they didn't look too bad. But then again.
Would it be too much to ask if you maybe made a template so that everyone could make these renders? Or maybe if someone made like a flash program that people could get to on the Wiki like a tool? I know that a page here that rendered blocks would be a huge asset on the Wiki, at least to me. idk about other people =P. I've seen people make minecraft skin creators out of flash, so this shouldn't be too hard. But that's only if you knew how to do this kinda stuff.
I know this is kinda a large request, so I'll back off of that. It's like that mansion on my Christmas list. Would it be really awesome to have? Yeah. But I don't need it. Just a template maybe. I'd be happy with that.
I have blender and it's confusing. =P
Again, thanks for looking into my online render idea. I don't know enough to make a nice webpage renderer, just a proof of concept. But if you could provide like a template that would be amazing. That way I don't have to guess what angle and size and whatever. =D
Starport592 04:57, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
I did upload some old blend files that someone requested ages ago, however that was before my site crashed so the link is dead now. I could upload all my blend files, but they're pretty messy and inconsistent. Often times I've updated an image, rendered it, but then forgot to save the blend file, so they're out of date.
Not sure how well I'd be able to make an online tool (and I have heaps of things that should probably get done before I put much time into it), I only know some basic stuff with JavaScript, and I don't know any Actionscript (I also really hate Flash in general, so it's not something I'd be willing to learn). I may be able to work something out with PHP, but it probably wouldn't be very good. Also, it would probably have to use SVG, which doesn't seem to work very well for this. We'll see. ultradude25 (T|C) at 05:26, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Overwatch AI feedback

Heya

I noticed your bot making a change that actually introduced an error:

  • It changed ...when you place it it will... to ...when you place it is will.... While 'it it' most often is a typo for 'it is', if the word after the second 'it' is a verb, then the sentence is probably correct and shouldn't be touched. e.g. If you set fire to it it burns with a blue flame is clearly correct. Dunno if the bot gives you enough context to tell when an 'it it' is actually correct.
  • It also changed 'the exact same' to 'exactly the same'. That usage is informal rather than incorrect, so it's perhaps a rather nit-picky thing to change considering some of the other errors that get left untouched.

There's a good collected list of common errors here: http://public.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/errors.html#errors --Simons Mith 00:59, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

The typo list is just a bunch of regexes, so there's no way for it to know. However, "it it" is incorrect grammar anyway. It should be "it, it", which also wouldn't try to be corrected by the bot and would prevent this happening. ultradude25 (T|C) at 02:10, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the link - I've flagged it as an error on Wikipedia too, and provided a couple of other example sentences where 'it it' is legit. (For sentences where the comma is definitely incorrect, rather than merely debatable, see cases such as 'Is it him? Is it her? Is it it?', or 'Was it it that did that?') So I'm pretty sure they'll change it. Further, if you know that 'it it' should be corrected either to 'it is' or to 'it, it', then it's a case that that bot shouldn't be touching, because it may introduce errors by making its change. --82.69.54.207 11:32, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
A very quick response on Wikipedia - they're not going to change it because there are several (comma-less) combos it could be, viz. 'it it', 'it', 'it is', 'is it', 'if it' and even 'it if'. Definitely a change to approach with caution. --82.69.54.207 13:34, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Not surprised. I would've thought something like that would've been picked up much earlier and discussed. Since this is for a manual bot; you're expected to check the edits before saving, so they have to go with the most often correct correction, and hope the users of the bot will fix up the edge cases. However it's quite a small change, so it can easily be missed in between all the other changes. ultradude25 (T|C) at 20:46, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
