Nav box "prevparent" for 1.7.4/5/6

So hey Majr, I'm pretty new here, and I wanted to get your input on why you did a thing a certain way.

On the 1.8 snapshot pages, even for those released prior to 1.7.5, you changed the Navbox field 'prevparent' to 1.7.5. My instinct is that the 'prevparent' for those older snapshots would be 1.7.4, but I may be misunderstanding what 'prevparent' means. Any advice on why it should be 1.7.5?

Naturally this has implications for whenever they release 1.7.6 as well, which is why it comes to mind now.

Sealbudsman (talk) 20:37, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

I see it as being in version order. All those snapshots are for 1.8, thus they come after any 1.7 versions, even if they were chronologically released before. Matt ⎜ 01:15, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Template Person - Adding Reddit field

Hey Majr,

I've been wondering if it would be worthwhile creating a field in the Template:Person for reddit accounts. Notch, jeb, Grum and Dinnerbone are extremely active on reddit and I've also seen TheMogMiner, Searge, Junkboy, Mollstam and Johan post there too. It may lead to the template becoming too cluttered on employees' pages though...

Block rendering

I've noticed that you seem to do a majority of the 150x150 images used on the pages for blocks to show what the block looks like. I'm guessing that this is done in a 3D application, and I wanted to ask if it would be possible to get the template for making my own? WiduX (talk) 16:58, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

You're not the first to ask; see User talk:Majr/Archive 10#Isometrics Renders. -- Orthotopetalk 18:36, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

Updates to Template:Version

The links of the Playstation 3 and Xbox edition links need to both link to the Console Edition version history pages. Also, the Xbox version is now 1.6.1 (TU seems to be used interchangeably between both Playstation and Xbox360 editions) and the Playstation 3 version is now 1.05. GoandgooTalk

Are we not able to just have a single console version instead of separate ones? Matt ⎜ 03:19, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
I suppose so, but the problem is that although the content in the 2 versions is exactly the same, they have different version numbers. Also, please update the version numbers in Template:Version - 1.6.1 for Xbox and 1.05 for Playstation. GoandgooTalk

What about the TU versions? Matt ⎜ 04:09, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
I think TU versions should represent the overarching console edition version, while the individual version numbers are for the respective editions (1.6.1 for Xbox and 1.05 for Playstation). GoandgooTalk

Hi Majr, would you be able to make it so that links in Template:History are changed from Xbox 360 to the Console version history page? Would it also be possible for you to change the headers to console edition and add arguments so that I can change any references of the xbox edition to console edition? Thanks GoandgooTalk

It will be useful if we can show the newest development versions by Template:Versions. Pocket Edition version history/Development versionsa20001017Talk 04:23, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Since both the development version and the release version have alpha in the name, the word "build" will be used to tell that it is a snapshot. Matt ⎜ 09:40, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
"0.8.0 build 8" does not point to right place of the page. "#A8" should be "#0.8.0 alpha build 8".

Table CSS behavior help request

Collapsible sortable tables don't seem to be working properly. As far as I can tell, the headerSort class is capturing mouse clicks, preventing them from reaching the hide/show button. Happens in every browser I've tried (Firefox/Opera/Chrome), and I don't know CSS well enough to figure out how to fix this. -- Orthotopetalk 19:23, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

It's nothing to do with CSS. The table sorter JS is preventing clicks from bubbling up, so it never reaches the collapsible table's delegated event which is bound to #mw-content-text. I guess I'll have to bind sortable tables directly. Matt ⎜ 02:55, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

A bit of help with DPL

Do you know of a way using Extension:DPL's includematch parameter to include check a specific unnamed parameter instead of all of them? Specifically unnamed parameter {}.

--KnightMiner (talk|contribs) 21:22, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

You can use include to retrieve specific parameters from templates and then process the results; this is what I used for the crafting usage system. Since there's no DPL function in lua, I had to call the DPL parser function and then process the result manually into a table, but lua is so fast it's really not a problem. Matt ⎜ 12:31, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
I mean using includematch as a filter to receive only templates with {} equal to the string inserted. My problem was it checked both {} and {} for the result. I was wondering if you knew a way to fix that, or if I was better off using categories like you did with crafting usage. --KnightMiner (talk|contribs) 03:28, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
includematch receives the template call, so you'd need to try to match the second anonymous argument, which isn't really doable without enforcing the template call to be written in a particular way. With a named argument it'd be easy. Matt ⎜ 05:05, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
DPL seems overkill for this anyways, if I'm understanding the problem correctly; I would recommend just using {{ #ifeq: {} | string | }}. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 08:42, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
I think it would just be easier to use a category set to {} by the achievements template, and then load from the category. Any problem with that as long as I make them all __HIDDENCAT__? --KnightMiner (talk|contribs) 15:47, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Load only one usage of a template

Hello, me again. I am wondering how you got DPL to load just the desired instances of the template. My test template is loading all usages of Template:Achievements if the category exists, instead of just the one with the category. --KnightMiner (talk|contribs) 13:59, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Template:Crafting and mods

Hello,

Does the new Crafting template support mods? -- TheWombatGuru t | c NL Admin 21:15, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

More so than the old template version. Matt ⎜ 03:10, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
I don't see how to do this in the documentation page, how do I do it? -- TheWombatGuru t | c NL Admin 08:56, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
It works the same as all the grid-based templates. Matt ⎜ 09:13, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
So I have to do something like

?? -- TheWombatGuru t | c NL Admin 09:20, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
No, you use it the same as other grid-based templates, like Crafting Table.

Matt ⎜ 09:26, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Ok thanks, but a page like Wood Planks uses Crafting usage, where are those crafting recipes saved? -- TheWombatGuru t | c NL Admin 09:30, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
As the doc page says, the data is pulled from the recipe's page. That system isn't designed for mods, nor is it necessary. Matt ⎜ 09:37, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
In I would like to use little sprites just like Items, how should that be done? Is there already a system for mods in the normal ItemLink, ItemSprite etc. Or should new templates be created at Ex Nihilo ItemLink or or  ? -- TheWombatGuru t | c NL Admin 11:22, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Supporting mods for itemsprite doesn't make sense because the mod items will have entirely separate spritesheet and IDs, which is all there really is to the template. Use the latter name. Matt ⎜ 15:24, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Is there an easy way to get it to work, I guess it can use most of the Lua code of the normal templates. -- TheWombatGuru t | c NL Admin 15:49, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
From what I can tell, use Then redesign Module:Mods/Ex_Nihilo/Sprite to be the same format of Module:ItemSprite --KnightMiner (talk|contribs) 16:20, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Like so? Template:Mods/Ex Nihilo/ItemLink, Template:Mods/Ex Nihilo/ItemSprite, Module:Mods/Ex Nihilo/Sprite, Module:Mods/Ex Nihilo/ItemSprite ? -- TheWombatGuru t | c NL Admin 16:27, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Looks right. All that's left is to change parameters in Module:Mods/Ex Nihilo/ItemSprite. "name" is the name of your spritesheet "<filename>CSS.png", without the "CSS.png" and ids will become "Mods/Ex Nihilo/ItemSprite/IDs". You then make "Module:Mods/Ex Nihilo/ItemSprite/IDs" in the style of "Module:ItemSprite/IDs" --KnightMiner (talk|contribs) 16:43, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
I did that, but it doesn't seem to work and in Template:Mods/Ex Nihilo/ItemSprite it uses the normal ItemCSS.png file. New pages: Module:Mods/Ex Nihilo/ItemSprite/IDs, File:Ex Nihilo ItemCSS.png -- TheWombatGuru t | c NL Admin 17:43, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing it, how do I set a default spriteimage, the question mark like in the normal BlockSprite and ItemSprite? it doesn't work for Template:Mods/Ex Nihilo/Blocks/content-- TheWombatGuru t | c NL Admin 15:54, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Set pos to the position of whatever sprite you want to be the default. Matt ⎜ 16:00, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Doesn't seem to work, or I missed something for the Template:Mods/Ex Nihilo/Items. Template:Mods/Ex Nihilo/Blocks is done though :) took a long time to make that Blocksprite.png file in photoshop... -- TheWombatGuru t | c NL Admin 00:11, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Stronghold Library deletion

Hi Majr, I worked really hard on the Stronghold Library page, but when you deleted it you mentioned that there was no content. I actually put a lot of time into the content I had on that page. Names of bugs from the bug tracker

Hello,

I'd said on the 14w25a page that we don't change bug report titles that come from the tracker, and you'd asked me, "says who".

I couldn't find who had said it specifically, but over time I've seen it happen that someone would fix the grammar or spelling on one of those titles, and some other editor -- someone with a lot of contributions who I'd run into over and over -- would come back and say that we don't change bug titles. Enough so that I came to believe it was some kind of standard, if only unofficial.

Is there some kind of standard? I would have thought those would be similar to titles of linked references, which I would have thought it was important to reproduce faithfully.

Appreciate your time.

Sealbudsman (Aaron) (talk) – 11:17, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

I can only recall one instance where spelling corrections on bug titles were reverted, and I undid those as well. We only use the bug titles in the first place because it's easier than thinking up one yourself, and you can copy it directly from Mojang's blog post; so there's no reason not to correct the spelling of said titles. Mobs & Ladders

Hey Majr,

Recently made some edits to the Slime and Silverfish section about those mobs being able to climb ladders, only to have them removed. Just wondering where the proper place to put those is (if not on the main mob page) since they can be useful for creating mob farms. Most people are probably not aware that those mobs can climb ladders, since based on their physical descriptions it would not make sense for them too.

TheCKAGT (talk) 07:50, 30 July 2014 (UTC) TheCKAGT

It is already stated in the appropriate place. Majr ⎜ 08:22, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Understood. I just felt as though it may be a worthwhile addition considering most of the other hostile mobs have it listed under their behavior (zombies, skeletons, creepers, zombie pigmen, endermen, witch, etc). TheCKAGT (talk) 08:46, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
It shouldn't do. Any behaviour that is shared with most or all mobs only needs to be on the mobs or mob AI pages. Individual mob pages should only say how that mob's behaviour differs from the norm. Majr ⎜ 12:37, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Well you can write them in manually as a temporary fix, but probably the easiest way to fix it is to use a separate category for pre-releases and display the lists one after the other. We might even want to have them separate anyway, with headers above. Majr ⎜ 12:32, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Ok, on another note, should I change all of the Fixes titles so the url is not in the header? Also, what should I do with pages like The Update that Changed the World, Horse Update and Redstone Update? I was thinking they should redirect to the respective page, ie The Update that Changed the World redirects to 1.7.2, Horse Update redirects to 1.6.1 etc. GoandgooTalk

Since external links in headers causes the section edit anchor to break, they should be removed, yes.
My initial thought was to redirect those pages and move their 0th section to the version pages, however those pages also contain a summary of the most notable changes, as an alternative to having to dive through a mile long list of everything that was changed, which would be a shame to lose. It might seem a bit strange to have both the summary and the full list on the same page though. Maybe if the summary was really cut down to be concise it could fit it, but I'm not sure. Needs other opinions. For now, just make sure those pages have the correct link to the full list of changes when the pages are split. Majr ⎜ 08:30, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Ok, so for now I'll leave those pages as they are, but will provide correct links to version history pages.GoandgooTalk

Computer versions template

How can I make it so that versions inside the brackets wrap around to the next row? At the moment, all of the versions in the bracket are on one line, so it is going beyond the width of the page. GoandgooTalk

You can set white-space:normal on the parent list element, but it doesn't make the dot stay on the same line then. The sub-list should really never contain more than 2 or 3 items because of the default nowrap. Majr ⎜ 10:16, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

1.0.0/Development versions

Would you be able to make it so that 1.0.0-RC1 and 1.0.0-RC2 appear on the page? I have tagged them as |type=Release candidate. Thanks GoandgooTalk

Was already working on it. Majr ⎜ 12:25, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
Ok thanks. So now that 1.0-present has been converted to the new page format, should I now start converting the beta versions (and earlier)? GoandgooTalk

Not sure at the moment. Alpha and prior don't have much information per version, which makes it hard to justify splitting them up (it's even short enough that the tables don't look super terrible). We might move them to better titles and get rid of the tables, but I think we're going to keep them on a single pages. Beta has a few reasonably sized versions, but also many small ones, so I'm not decided on if it should be split or not, but those tables have got to go.
What you could do is try the other editions with version nav and make sure it will work fine with them, since I only ever tested the computer edition. I know for one that we'll need to be able to trim the edition from the version number in the navigation part or it'll be too long and look cluttered. Majr ⎜ 12:51, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
Hmm, I understand what you mean by the navigation looking cluttered - for the 1.0.0 pre-releases/release candidates as well as some of the 1.7.10 pre releases, the navigation gets split over two lines, which makes it a bit cluttered. Also, the Beta 1.8 pre-releases are still on the Development versions history page, so those need to get untableised (is that a word?) and probably put into separate pages. So Beta 1.8 would probably need to be on its own page but that leads to a problem where some Beta versions are on separate pages but some are not. As an alternative, I could move the Beta 1.8 pre-releases to the separate version pages, but forget about converting Beta 1.8. In regards to testing the other editions, do you mean the Pocket Edition and Console Edition? Are they going to be transferred over to the new format as well? GoandgooTalk

I've done a test of the latest pocket edition version - Pocket Edition Alpha 0.9.5. The Pocket Edition in the nav links need to go, but apart from that it mostly looks ok. However if we make a pocket edition versions template (like the computer versions template), should i prefix each version with Alpha or just list them without the world Alpha? GoandgooTalk

I think it's worth splitting out pocket edition and console edition, don't think we'll worry about pi edition though...
If the navbox has an alpha section, then I don't see the need for the prefix. Majr ⎜ 02:47, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Ok. For the pocket edition category, could you make it so that it is rather than . Also, is there a way to hide the Pocket Edition part of the page name in the next parent/prevparent etc fields? GoandgooTalk

Creating redirected pages for translations

Majr, i'm new here. If i write my translation with my original language, how can i make them turn into my translation without creating redirected pages ? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Quachtridat (talkcontribs) at 09:04, 15 August 2014‎ (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Not sure what you mean. You've already been creating the pages in the right place. Majr ⎜ 09:34, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
I mean:
You told me not to create redirected pages for translation (Vietnamese Project)
Then i want to ask you: "How can i make my original words be able to redirect to translated page"
Example:
- I write: Vật phẩm (Item)
- I make page: Item/vi
-> How can i make "Vật phẩm" be able to redirect to Item/vi when i click ?
[Sorry for my bad English]

Translate "Version History Navigation Box"

Hey Majr! I translated "Version History" page into Vietnamese ("Version History/vi"). But how can I translate the navigation box (text and links) ? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Quachtridat (talkcontribs) at 02:54, 17 August 2014‎ (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Hello, I've been tracking your edits for the Vietnamese translation project, you're doing a good job! Now, the navbox in English is located at this page, Template:Version history nav. I've already made thee Vietnamese version for you at Template:Version history nav/vi. All links go to the correct Vietnamese page, all you need to do is translate it. If you have any other questions regarding translating the wiki to Vietnamese, or don't know where to continue on with the project contact me under this message, at the Vietnamese project page or at my user talk page at User talk:TheWombatGuru. — TheWombatGuru t | c NL Admin 11:03, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

What is "pos" ?

Hello,

Could you explain what's the "pos" variable in *Sprite templates like Template:BiomeSprite or Template:BlockSprite ? Why it's used and how it's used ? I did not have enough time to search, so i asked from you.

Thanks. MamiZaCraft (talk) 12:38, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

That is the position number of the default sprite. It is 256 on Module:ItemSprite and 384 on Module:BlockSprite, and that position on each is the default ? texture. --KnightMiner (t|c) 18:57, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Banner's pattern recipes

Hello, there is a discussion on the problem of whether or not the pattern recipes of banners should be listed in the crafting usage section of other pages, as the creator of the module, do you think the pattern recipes fit in with the purpose of the crafting usage module? —Powup333 ZH Admin 15:38, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

I actually joined Curse back in April, but I had been working on leaguepedia for most of that time. Majr ⎜ 03:45, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Request for MajrBot

I just started a project to rewrite articles to fit the style guide (as many seem to do their own thing), and I was wondering if you could have MajrBot add Category:Rewrite block to blocks articles, Category:Rewrite item to item articles, and Category:Rewrite entity to entity articles. Adding the categories would make it much easier to know which pages are unfinished.

--KnightMiner (t|c) 17:51, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Wouldn't it be easier to add a category to pages that have been rewritten then remove the category once the project is complete? Majr ⎜ 04:51, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, that actually would be easier. Now if only you could move categories... --KnightMiner (t|c) 12:40, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Translation pages

Why is it that some translation pages are on their own wiki and some are on subpages of the english wiki? For example, the german page on wool is at http://minecraft-de.gamepedia.com/Wolle while the Czech one is at http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Wool/cz. GoandgooTalk
