Revision as of 11:11, 10 March 2012

Flowers is a classification of similar blocks representing each a single type of flower. The two varieties are Dandelions which look yellow, and Roses which look red. The varieties are technically distinct in data values.

Flowers can be harvested by hand.

Flowers are naturally generated, but do not spread and cannot be duplicated. They can only be planted on grass and dirt blocks. When planted, they are subject to survival conditions. Flowers can be artificially generated using Bone Meal. Apart from decoration purposes, Flowers can be crafted into Dyes.

Properties

In order to survive, there should be no block anywhere above it that obstructs sunlight or moonlight, or there is at least a light level of 8. Otherwise, they will naturally pop out (drop an item of the same kind that can be picked up).

Generation

Flowers will generate in biomes containing grass or dirt. They will be generated and survive even if the biome is covered with a thin layer of Snow.

Flowers cannot be spread or duplicated naturally. Using Bone Meal is the only way to generate new Flowers.

It is possible to find Flowers deep within caves.

Roses will additionally be dropped by Iron Golems.

Strategy

  • If Flowers are produced en masse in order to dye Wool, be aware of a technique using Dyes (read more) used to multiply the potential of a single Flower.

Console variations

Pocket Edition

In Pocket Edition,

Update history

  • Early Classic 0.0.20

Added Dandelion and Rose (can be placed anywhere).

  • Pocket Edition Alpha 0.1

Added cyan-tinted flower.

  • Beta 1.6.6

Dandelion and Rose can now be generated artificially using Bone Meal.

  • Beta 1.8

Bug: Roses cannot be found naturally, and Dandelions became more abundant.

  • Beta 1.9

Fixed a bug that would cause Roses not to spawn.

Trivia

  • On SMP, placing a flower on a stone block with a layer of snow on top would result in the flower being planted normally.
  • Due to the nature of the flowers' spawning algorithm, it is possible (but relatively rare) to find naturally-spawned flowers in lava, caverns or Abandoned Mine Shafts.
  • Like Torches, flowers convert falling objects like sand or gravel into their collectible item entity.
