The Void

The void is pure black.

The void is the name given to the empty space below layer 0.

Effects

Falling into the void past Y=-64 causes the player's health to be depleted by about 4♥♥ every half second, leading to the player's death in 2 12 seconds. Armor does not protect you from dying in the void, and death always occurs at Y=-199.10. However, if status effects are used the death level alters only slightly. After this, if the player does not press any buttons, they will usually fall until somewhere below Y=-256, with this number varying on each death. If commands are used to make the player invincible or give them infinite health, they will fall until Minecraft crashes. When you fall into the void on a server with anti-flying measures, you are kicked out regardless of having a flying mod. Riding a vehicle into the void will result in the player being stuck in the vehicle until they die.

File:Watervoid.jpg

Liquids, such as water, cannot flow into the void. (Because of the height limit)

Other entities may also fall through the void and receive the same damage as the player, with the exception of the wither, which appears to take tremendous damage. All entities will disappear at Y=-64. Any entity above layer Y=319 or below layer Y=-64 will be black. In the Overworld and in the Nether, a layer of bedrock prevents the player from going into the void. In The End, however, the void is easily accessible due to the large gaps between the islands.

Pocket Edition

In Pocket Edition, the player's health is depleted by 4♥♥ every half second at any negative height. At Y=-32 an invisible barrier is erected, preventing the player from falling further. In Creative Mode, one will not die, giving free access to flying under the void, but if the player falls in Creative, they will eventually land on an invisible surface at about 256 blocks below Y=0.

There is daylight according to the current time in the void of Pocket Edition.

Console Edition

Entering the bottom void is not possible in the Console Editions. Although the player is unable to break the bottom or top layer of bedrock, even in creative, you can enter it by breaking end stone in the end until you get to the void. Then you will die and respawn. If the player does somehow manage to do so in the overworld, attempting to fall into the void will result in the player standing on it. This also happens at the y-coordinate of 511, where an invisible barrier is erected to stop the player going any higher. The invisible barrier for the bottom is not present in the End. If the player is affected with resistance 5+, regeneration 8+ or instant health you can fall infinitely into the void without dying.

Additionally, black void fog exists. It increases with depth as the player descends past Y=17. As the player travels deeper, the fog at the edge of the render distance will grow closer, until the player reaches the deepest depths, where visibility is reduced to just a few blocks, beyond which lay only blackness. There are also dark gray void particles that appeared at level 16 and below, plus in the void. Void fog can be disabled in the options menu to increase performance.

Note: This video is outdated, as void fog was removed in 1.8

A '''goat horn''' is an [[item]] dropped by [[goat]]s. It has eight variants, and each plays a unique sound when {{Control|used}} which can be heard by [[Player|players]] in a large radius.

== Obtaining ==
=== Mob loot ===
A horn is dropped when an adult [[goat]] rams a tree or any other hard block that occurs naturally where goats spawn. These include [[stone]], [[coal ore]], [[copper ore]], [[iron ore]], [[emerald ore]], [[log]], or [[packed ice]]. Goats do not ram other solid blocks. {{IN|java}}, these blocks are listed under the {{cd|snaps_goat_horn}} [[tag]], and can be modified by [[data pack]]s.

Up to two horns can be dropped from an adult goat. Regular goats may drop the Ponder, Sing, Seek, and Feel horns, while screaming goats drop the Admire, Call, Yearn, and Dream horns. A specific goat drops only one type of horn; that is, if a goat drops a Sing horn, its other horn is also a Sing horn.

=== Natural generation ===
{{LootChestItem|goat-horn}}
Only the four variants from regular goats can be found here.

== Usage ==
When {{control|used}}, they play a loud sound that can be heard from up to 256 blocks, but are also limited by the server view distance. Each horn variant plays a unique sound. There are eight variants, four of which are exclusive to [[Goat#Spawning|screaming goats]].

There is a cooldown of seven seconds between each use of the horn. All goat horns are affected by this cooldown.

Void fog was added. If you are in within 16 blocks of the void, the particle effect will be visible, along with limited visibility, as if you were on render distance tiny.
If using an X-Ray mod, you can see the color of the void change from blue to black while descending. This can also be seen by a player in an ocean biome. Just before the player's head goes under the water, the horizon is seen to turn black, and as the player rises it changes back to blue.
Entities are now lit in the void.
The Player can now reach the void through Creative mode.
Previously, it was possible to find holes in the bedrock that lead into the void. This was fixed.
Previously, if one was to pass the 32 million block limit (called the Far Lands), the player would no longer clip (the blocks become non-solid) and fall through to the void, resulting in the player's eventual death. As of 1.8, at the 32 million block limit world generation becomes simpler and block physics fail. Also, exceeding the 32 million block limit will cause the game to crash.

'''Kelp''' is an underwater plant that generates in most [[ocean]]s.

== Obtaining ==

=== Natural generation ===

Kelp naturally generates in any [[ocean]] [[biome]]s (except in [[Frozen Ocean|frozen]], [[Deep Frozen Ocean|deep frozen]] and [[Warm Ocean|warm]]), near and around [[seagrass]]. Each chunk has {{frac|1|18}} chance to generate a [[vegetation]] of kelp.

=== Breaking ===

Kelp can be mined instantly with any [[tool]] or with the player's fist. Removing water from the kelp block destroys the kelp. Breaking one part of a kelp stalk destroys all kelp [[block]]s above it. Each block drops a kelp [[item (entity)|item]].

=== Trading ===

Kelp can be bought from [[wandering trader]]s for 3 emeralds.

== Usage ==

Kelp can be placed underwater by hand, or anywhere by the use of [[commands]] such as {{cmd|setblock}}. Placing it by hand gives it a random {{code|age}} value between 0 and 24. Kelp can be placed only in [[water]] source blocks or downward-flowing water, not horizontally flowing water.

When placed in downward-flowing water, the flowing water transforms into a water source block,<ref>{{bug|MC-134229}}</ref> which is useful for faster [[bubble column]] elevator creation.

Any building block can be placed on top of a kelp plant, which is useful for building structures over a deep ocean without needing to build from the ocean floor (see also [[lily pad]]).

=== Cooking ingredient ===

{{smelting
| showname = 1
| Kelp
| Dried Kelp
| 0.1
}}

=== Composting ===

Placing kelp into a [[composter]] has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

=== Growth mechanics ===

Kelp can be planted on a broad variety of blocks. It grows underwater if it has either a source block of water or, {{in|Java}}, flowing water above it.<ref>{{bug|MC-133354}}</ref> Neither [[player]]s nor [[dispenser]]s can remove the water source block that kelp grows in without breaking the kelp first.

Kelp does not require any [[light]] level to grow. Kelp also grows without having [[sky]] access. [[Bone meal]] can be used to grow kelp by 1 block on each use.

Kelp, when planted, is generated with a randomly chosen age value, which can be checked when pressing [[Debug screen|<kbd>F3</kbd>]]{{only|java}}. The age value of a newly planted kelp plant varies randomly from 0 to 24. Each time the kelp grows in height by one block, the newly generated top of the kelp plant increases its age by 1. When the top block of the kelp plant reaches an age of 25, it stops growing. This means that kelp can naturally grow to a height between 2 (if the first kelp plant had an age of 24) and 26 blocks (if the first kelp plant had an age of 0).

When a kelp plant block is broken, the age of the kelp plant block underneath is randomized to a value from 0 to 24 and the kelp continues growing until it reaches age 25. It is possible to use this mechanic to cultivate a kelp plant to increase its growth height beyond its natural maximum height of 26 blocks. This can be done by breaking the top-most block of the kelp plant each time it reaches age 25. A kelp plant cultivated by a player in this way repeatedly grows until it reaches the water surface.

Each time it receives a [[random tick]], kelp has a 14% chance of growing.

If [[shears]] are used on the topmost block of kelp, that block automatically sets its {{cd|age}} value to {{cd|25}} and stop growing.{{only|JE}}

=== Farming ===
{{Main|Tutorials/Kelp farming}}
Kelp farming is similar to farming [[sugar cane]], although kelp must be placed underwater. Automation of harvest is easier because items float up in water.

== Trivia ==
* In real life, [[wikipedia:kelp|kelp]] is not considered a [[wikipedia:plant|plant]]. It is classified by scientists as a [[wikipedia:Brown algae|brown algae]].
** Kelp in real life absorbs nutrients directly from the water, instead of through its root-like structure, [[wikipedia:Holdfast (biology)|holdfast]], which merely attaches it to the seabed. This is in accordance with kelp being able to grow on almost any solid block in ''Minecraft''.

'''Pumpkin seeds''' are items obtained from pumpkins that can be used to grow pumpkin stems.

'''Pumpkin stems''' are plants grown on [[farmland]] that, over time, grow [[pumpkin]]s on dirt, mud and moss blocks adjacent to them.

== Obtaining ==
=== Breaking ===
When broken, a pumpkin stem drops 0–3 pumpkin seeds. The chance for pumpkin seeds to drop increases with the stem's age.

Pumpkin seeds can be planted only on [[farmland]], as stems. Over time, a stem grows through several stages{{Needs testing}} and, at its final growth stage, will produce [[pumpkin]]s on any adjacent [[dirt]], [[Coarse Dirt|coarse dirt]], [[Rooted Dirt|rooted dirt]], [[Grass Block|grass block]], [[farmland]], [[podzol]], [[mycelium]], [[Moss Block|moss block]], [[mud]] or [[Muddy Mangrove Roots|muddy mangrove roots]]. If a pumpkin is already occupying a spot adjacent to a stem it does not grow more pumpkins until the pumpkin is removed. A single stem can grow an unlimited number of pumpkins. Pumpkin stems need a minimum light level of 10 in the block above the stem to grow and give pumpkins. Pumpkin seeds are affected by [[bone meal]] only with respect to stem growth; bone meal does not help produce the actual pumpkins.

=== Breeding ===
Like other seeds, pumpkin seeds can be used to [[breed]] [[chicken]]s, lead chickens around, and make baby chickens grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time.

=== Taming ===
Like other seeds, pumpkin seeds can be used to tame [[parrot]]s.

=== Composting ===
Placing pumpkin seeds into a [[composter]] has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

== Pumpkin stem ==
A '''pumpkin stem''' is the block that is planted on [[farmland]] when pumpkin seeds are used on it. It starts underground, and rises up as the plant grows. The stem is colored green when young, and then yellow once fully grown.

The stem curves once a pumpkin has grown from it. A fully-grown single stem connects to any [[pumpkin]] in an adjacent square, thus there are 5 possible appearances to a stem. If there are multiple pumpkins it can connect to, it favors the east, then west, north, and south. When the pumpkin is removed, the stem returns to its straight shape.

'''Raw chicken''' is a [[food]] item that can be eaten by the [[player]]. It can be cooked in a [[furnace]], [[smoker]], or a [[campfire]] to make [[cooked chicken]].

==Obtaining==

===Mob loot ===

Upon death, an adult [[chicken]] drops 1 raw chicken. The maximum is increased by 1 per level of [[Looting]], for a maximum of 1-4 with Looting III. Chickens that die while on [[fire]] drop [[cooked chicken]] instead.

===Cat gifts===
{{main|Cat#Gifts}}

Tamed [[cat]]s have a 70% chance to give the [[player]] a gift as they wake up from a [[bed]], and the gift has a 16.13% chance to be raw chicken.

==Usage==

=== Food===

To eat raw chicken, press and hold {{control|use}} while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores {{hunger|2}} hunger and 1.2 hunger [[Hunger#Mechanics|saturation]], but has a 30% chance of inflicting food poisoning (the {{EffectLink|link=Hunger (status effect)|Hunger}} effect for 30 seconds).

<nowiki>*This has a similar effect as [[Rotten Flesh]].

===Smelting ingredient===

===Wolves===

Raw chicken can be used to [[breed]] and heal tamed [[wolves]], lead them around, and make baby tamed wolves grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time.

Wolves are at no risk of food poisoning.

===Trading===

A '''name tag''' is an [[item]] used to name [[mob]]s in the world and prevent them from despawning naturally.

== Obtaining ==

=== Chest loot ===

{{LootChestItem|name-tag}}

=== Fishing ===

Name tags can be caught from [[fishing]] as part of the treasure category with a {{frac|1|6}} chance after the 5% chance of being a treasure catch. The chance of catching treasure increases with the [[Luck of the Sea]] enchantment.

=== Trading ===

Master-level librarian [[villagers]] offer to sell a name tag for 20 [[emerald]]s as one of their available trades.

== Usage ==

To use a name tag, it must first be renamed with an [[anvil]], costing 1 [[experience]] level.

If it is not renamed, it has no effect when used on a mob. After the name tag is renamed, the player can {{control|use}} it on a mob to give it the name given to the name tag from the anvil. Mobs and name tags can be renamed any number of times. Name tags with the same name are stackable.

Once a mob is named, it keeps its name, and the name tag is consumed.

When a mob is named, it is excluded from the mob cap count.

Effects on various mobs:
* A named [[silverfish]] that goes into a block appears to lose its name because it is replaced by a newly generated unnamed silverfish when the block is broken.
* A baby (animal or villager) keeps its name when becoming an adult.
** A named [[villager]] keeps its name when transformed into a [[Zombie Villager|zombie villager]].
** A named zombie villager keeps its name when cured.
* [[Wandering Trader|Wandering trader]]s still despawn even if they are named, or in a [[minecart]] or [[boat]].
* A named [[wither]]'s boss bar displays its name instead of "Wither".
* Naming an [[ender dragon]] with commands also displays the name in the boss bar.

=== Limitations ===

Any mob can be named except for the [[ender dragon]] and [[player]]s.

A name tag can rename an [[armor stand]], though it does not show the nameplate above its head until <code>CustomNameVisible:1b</code> is set as an extra step.

{{control|Using|use}} a name tag on a villager renames the villager instead of opening the trading interface. A saddled pig is renamed instead of being ridden. Using a name tag on any other mob that can be interacted with performs the {{control|use}} action instead of being named. These mobs can be renamed if the player uses the name tag while crouching or standing in a [[nether portal]] because the portal suppresses the {{control|use}} action.

Once a name tag is used on a mob, it is impossible to remove the name of that mob without the use of commands or external modifications.

=== Behavior ===

Renamed mobs have their name displayed over their head in the same fashion as a mob named through a renamed [[spawn egg]]. Their names can be seen only if they are aimed at from four or fewer blocks away.

Mobs that are named using the name tag never despawn in the world, similar to tamed mobs.<ref>{{tweet|dinnerbone|327485109940916226}}</ref> The exceptions are [[wandering trader]]s or if the mob is hostile and the difficulty is switched to "[[Peaceful]]", causing any hostile mobs or any named hostile mobs to despawn immediately.

If a renamed mob kills a player, the custom name is used in the death message in place of the mob type name. For instance, if a vindicator named "Johnny" kills a player, the death message is "Player was slain by Johnny".

A renamed [[wither]] also has a renamed health bar, and the boss bar doesn't regenerate{{verify}}.

=== Easter eggs ===

* Any mob that receives the name "[[Easter eggs#Upside-down mobs|Dinnerbone]]" or "[[Easter eggs#Upside-down mobs|Grumm]]" is rendered upside down. This even includes the player in early versions of Bedrock Edition if the username is set to either of these and you are not signed into Xbox Live.
* Naming a [[sheep]] "[[Easter eggs#Jeb sheep|jeb_]]" causes its wool to fade between the dye colors, producing a rainbow effect. The [[wool]] that drops when the sheep is [[shear]]ed or killed is the original color of the sheep before the sheep was named.
* Naming a [[rabbit]] "[[Rabbit#Toast|Toast]]" causes it to have a special memorial skin of user xyzen420's girlfriend's [http://www.reddit.com/r/minecraftsuggestions/comments/27hjog/to_themogminer_my_bunny_is_missing_please_help_me/ missing rabbit].
* Naming a [[vindicator]] "Johnny" causes it to be aggressive and attack all [[mob]]s including the wither (except [[ghast]]s and other [[illager]]s). The hostility even extends to [[Ravager|ravagers]] in [[Java Edition|''Java Edition'']], as the "Johnny" vindicator can also attack the ravager while it's riding it.

== Trivia ==
* Name tags were added at the request of [https://www.youtube.com/user/paulsoaresjr/ Paulsoaresjr].<ref>{{tweet|paulsoaresjr|326865482839883777}}</ref><ref>{{tweet|Dinnerbone|326812168630722561}}</ref>
* A stack of up to 64 name tags can be renamed at once. The cost is 1 [[experience]] level per stack, regardless of how many name tags were stacked.
* To name a [[mob]] “Name Tag” the player must give the name tag a random name, then rename it back to “Name Tag”.
* A [[villager]] with a name tag turned into a [[zombie villager]] by a [[zombie]] with a name tag does not despawn, but a villager with a name tag turned into a zombie by a zombie without a name tag does despawn.
* It is impossible to have a rainbow [[sheep]] upside-down, because it is impossible for it to be named “Jeb_” and “Dinnerbone” at the same time.

An '''item''' is an object that exists only within the [[player]]'s [[inventory]] and hands, or displayed in [[item frame]]s, [[glow item frame]]s, or [[armor stand]]s.

== Behavior ==

Some items, when {{control|used|use}}, place a [[block]] (ItemBlock) or [[entity]] (minecart, spawn eggs, etc.) version of themselves into the game world. Put simply, they are an item when in the [[inventory]], and a block when placed. For example, [[boat]]s turn into an entity when placed, and [[bed]]s turn into a group of blocks when placed. When selected in the [[hotbar]], items briefly display their names above the [[HUD]].

The only method by which an item can be properly displayed within the game environment is to place it into an [[item frame]].

If an item that does not become a block is dropped, it becomes an [[Item (entity)|entity]] represented by a sprite that floats above the ground for 5 minutes in a loaded [[chunk]] before despawning, unless the player walks over it to pick it up before it despawns, it is picked up by a mob, [[hopper]] or [[minecart with hopper]], or it is destroyed by [[fire]], [[lava]], [[cactus]], or [[explosion]]s.

A submerged object ascends towards the water’s edge. When the surface current is in motion, the object is propelled along with it.

Hoppers draw in any items that are placed above them.

Most items [[stack]] to 64, but some only stack to 16, and others not at all. ''However,'' all types of items can be stacked up to 127 through inventory editing.

'''Charcoal''' is an [[item]] obtained by smelting [[log]]s or [[wood]]. It is used as fuel, or for crafting [[torch]]es and [[campfire]]s. Unlike [[coal]], charcoal cannot be traded with [[villager]]s or crafted into a [[block of coal]]. Coal and charcoal also cannot stack together. It can be used as a substitute for coal, as both charcoal and coal have an equivalent duration when smelted.

== Obtaining ==

=== Breaking ===

A [[campfire]] broken without the [[Silk Touch]] enchantment drops 2 charcoal.

=== Fuel ===

When used in a [[furnace]] as a fuel, a piece of charcoal lasts 80 seconds (smelting up to 8 items), the same as coal. Charcoal used as fuel lasts more than 5 times longer than [[wood planks]] or [[wood]] logs used as fuel, being more efficient than any other use of wood for smelting in ''[[Java Edition]]'', but outstripped by [[wooden slabs]] in Bedrock.

Coal and charcoal are also the only fuels accepted by [[Minecart with Furnace|furnace minecarts]]. They provide approximately four minutes of transit each.

A '''slimeball''' is a [[crafting]] ingredient commonly dropped by [[slime]]s, and can be sneezed out by [[panda]]s.

== Obtaining ==

=== Mob loot ===

==== Slimes ====
{{see also|Tutorials/Slime farming}}

If a [[slime]]'s size is 1, it drops 0–2 slimeballs when killed. The maximum number of slimeballs is increased by 1 per level of [[Looting]], for a maximum of 5 slimeballs with Looting III.

==== Pandas ====

Baby [[panda]]s have a {{frac|1|700}} chance of [[drop]]ping one slimeball when sneezing.

=== Crafting ===

{{Crafting

}}

=== Trading ===

[[Wandering trader]]s sometimes offer to sell a slimeball for 4 [[emerald]]s.

== Usage ==

=== Breeding ===

Slimeballs can be used to breed [[frog]]s and reduce the remaining growth duration of [[tadpole]]s by 10%. Both also follow a player holding a slimeball.

Issues

Issues relating to "Void" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

Trivia

  • When viewed on a map, the void is seen as the pattern used for an unexplored area.
    • This is because there are no blocks recorded in the void's area, just the same as if the player has not explored or recorded normal areas.
  • When falling below Y=0, the second to last line of the debug screen disappears entirely, and is replaced by "Outside of world..."
    • This also occurs when you reach above Y=256.
  • You can survive in the void with Regeneration effect of level 6 or higher.
  • In the Pocket Edition, the Void is the same color as the sky in the overworld.
