Group parameter

Would it be worthwile to add the name parameter of the references tag? It is used frequently enough on this wiki as notes. --KnightMiner ^(t|c) 15:33, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

mobile view

Whenever it's 2 or more columns, they're necessarily very narrow columns, so each reference wraps like 6 or 7 times. – Sealbudsman (Aaron)

Well I didn't mean default to 1, I meant that in mobile mode it would always override the argument and make it 1 column. The problem is just that having 2+ columns is a good design solution for desktops and situations with an abundance of horizontal space, but degrades in readability in situations where the page is only like 20 to 24em across. Apologies if I'm repeating myself. I only tried to elaborate because I guessed I wasn't clear. – Sealbudsman (Aaron)

Comment: Could be easily done using a forced style in MediaWiki:Mobile.css. Just need to add a class to this template.

It instead may be better though to do what Wikipedia:Template:Reflist does and wrap based on width, rather then a global column wrap, as that would also be the case on small screens, and large screens may have a lot of extra space. –KnightMiner ^t/_c 03:40, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

I like the width-based approach, since it doesn’t require special code for phones. Wikipedia has actually deprecated use of the fixed-columns system due to its lack of flexibility, so I think we can change as well. — Orthotope^talk 05:32, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

I like width-based too. More resources: wikipedia discussion on number of columns, wikipedia column-width test cases. I personally gravitate toward having no parameter, and hard-code at 30em width. Because is there really a need for flexibility that differs page-to-page? – Sealbudsman (Aaron)

I think 30em would be a good default, but I would leave in the option for different sizes (and only use it in cases where it is required, which I assume will be rare. It may be required if there are a lot of references though). I have a sample of what the code would require here. Any values that are not a width are tagged with a category in order to cleanup the outdated usage. –KnightMiner ^t/_c 17:43, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

column-width rather than column-count

I would say that we keep the column count, and add the column-width to act as a minimum size. That way, column-count acts as an ideal column number, but will scale down if the columns get too small.

The reason this is better than just using column-width is it allows us to choose between two and three (or more) column layouts depending on the amount of references, whereas column-width would force us to have either no columns or three columns (on standard resolution screens). –Majr ᐸ Talk

Responsive design

Would someone with the appropriate permissions update this template to what the English Wikipedia is currently using? See Wikipedia:Template:Reflist. It automatically switches to 30em-wide columns (which means more columns for more width in the browser) if the number of references exceed 10. We could adapt that here for exceeding, say, 6.

I was going to do this but found that I couldn't. I have some experience editing templates here (I created Template:Distdir and Template:Columns-list for example) so I'd be happy to do this if I could. ~ Amatulic (talk) 00:43, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
