On the corner.

I'm terrible at editing but I also find a leaf block will stay and support just like this if its touching the corner of a dirt block. --Hagane17 04:12, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Random Decay

After i read the page on leaves describing the rules of why some leaves are temporary and some arent, so i decided to build a tree temple, i followed the rules exactly but some leaves just died for no reason even though they were attached to supported leaves. I propose a theory of random decay, some leaves just decay at random sometimes. please, if anyone can disprove me, please do so, else i will post this in the Leaves page. --WallShadow 01:20, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

I also think they decay randomly (but very slowly) even when they're attached to something. That's how live trees sometimes drop saplings.PurpleKiwi 02:06, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
One of the things I noticed while making the images, but didn't end up putting in the explanation, was that adding support/connections to a Temporary leaf block doesn't seem to change its status. At a guess, as soon as it becomes Temporary, a decay timer is set, and it'll go poof at the end, no matter what else happens. Odds are good you're seeing this effect, but I'd love to see evidence that something's missing from the explanation! -FunnyMan3595 03:38, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

The Halloween update

Leaves change colors according to the biome they're in, and they now turn into gray dust when punched, rather than green.. --Vipermagi 13:22, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

The grass and leaves texture in terrain.png are now grey and are instead tinted by the game to the correct colour, the destruction particles take the texture from terrain.png and are therefore grey. This is also why the side texture of the grass block is the wrong green, as it is still coloured by terrain.png. –ultradude25 (T|C) 10:30, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Growing through blocks

File:Leavesthroughcobblestone.jpg

Has anyone ever seen this before? I planted a tree roughly in the middle of a 4x5 tower on the other side of this wall. It grew to 14 blocks high (with branches that ran into the walls and stopped), and some of the leaves grew on the other side of a wall. They have remained for several Minecraft days now, and I don't expect they're going to wither at all. Unsurprisingly, two leaf blocks (the bottom right one and the one to its left) did disappear after I removed floor blocks that were directly under them. -WurdBendur 19:24, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Well seeing as leaf withering is broken in Minecraft since the Halloween update, I doubt they will! –ultradude25 (T|C) 20:22, 7 November 2010 (CST)
I should clarify that this is without the update. Other temporary leaves wither as expected. -WurdBendur 22:16, 7 November 2010 (CST)
In that case, they'll stay because they are touching a block. They only wither if they aren't touching any blocks. –ultradude25 (T|C) 22:18, 7 November 2010 (CST)
This has happened to me on multiple occasions, however after the leaf withering update, I've not had it happen since. I'm unsure if that is because the leaves are withering, or not. But I can say that it has happened. -St. Fenix (UserTalk) 16:57, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
confirmed, This has happened to me again, and the leaves did not wither. They stayed for quite a few days. This may be considered worthy as entrance as a bug or in the article. -St. Fenix (UserTalk) 16:50, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Percentage of sapling drops?

Can someone please add the percentage of leaf blocks yeild a sapling? -F1racer101 10:58, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

The figure I've always heard tossed around is each block has a 1 in 8 (12.5%) chance of dropping a sapling. However, I've seen no one provide any real evidence of this so I'm hesitant to add this figure to the page. --XipXoom 18:03, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Different Withering

It says on Notch's blog that leaves wither different to before. What is the difference because it looks the same to me? GlitchKing 19:59, 20 December 2010 (CST)

It's likely the code simply uses a different method to make the leaves decay. ConMan8 20:01, 20 December 2010 (CST)

Different Color Leaves:

I myself after the Beta Update have noticed that on most of my previously spawned trees that their leaves have become collections of many different colors from the many different biomes available in game. Has anyone else experienced this? I can upload a few pictures. -St. Fenix (UserTalk) 16:56, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

your actually seeing the pine needles, normal, and birch leaves. it happens on my worlds too. using a new world will fix it. Flish 02:56, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Trivia Mistake: Suffocation

The trivia says that you cannot suffocate in leaves, however this is not 100% true. Time and time again, if I am riding a boat and I go under leaves 1 block above the water, my character suffocates! I am using beta 1.2_02      LB 22:31, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

My bad, I should've been more specific - if a sapling right beside the player grows and causes leaves to form at the player's head, they won't suffocate. Alphap 22:42, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

I've been using bonemeal to grow trees quickly with fancy graphics. It definitely does cause suffocation under those circumstances. Mariel141 05:16, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Are you using the bonemeal while standing over the sapling? The wood does cause suffocation damage. Fai 00:00, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

New texture ?

Walking on top of trees

It looks like when I am walking on the leafs it destroys them, producing saplings in the process, is that true?

No, what probably is happening is you have destroyed all the wood in the tree (or most of it), and the leaves are degenerating as you walk over it. Fai 00:04, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
Or you're playing on a modded server. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 00:21, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Will leaves ever grow back? Is there a way to spawn more leaves without growing a new tree? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Josef.sabl (Talk|Contribs) 23:16, 21 March 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

No, leaves do not grow back. When a tree is "grown", it does it all at once, with a percentage change of having branches or not. I could be wrong though, correct me if I'm wrong. Don't forget to sign your posts. :) Fai 00:02, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Many leaves color

Just uploaded an image on a tree that has more than one leaves color. Can someone fix it so it is not in the "Decay" paragraph? I'm a newbie at uploading images, sorry. Calinou 10:04, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

1.7 Update

Via someone's "tutorial" on how to use shears, I noticed that the leaves were colored green in the inventory. Do leaves now update live per biome, meaning, if that person went from a bright green biome (can find out via grass) to a dark green (biome), with the leaves being cut down from the bright green, would the leaves in the inventory turn dark green or stay bright green? Cool12309(T|C) 14:20, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

The color of the leaves in the inventory is the same green in every biome. Also, in the Nether, where the leaves are yellow, these ones in the inventory are green. Now Ultradude25 should make an animated gif with the 3 types on leaves and we should update the inventory image.--Ua 10:35, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

4th leaf type

Leaves with a damage value of 3 show up as oak leaves, but with the pine tree leaf colour. These leaves have shown up in my map on trees that were generated before the Halloween Update. Theyve shown up again in areas generated later in an area I thought was inbetween biomes. Trying to plant trees here, however, did not give me multicolour trees again. Is there anyway to farm this leaf type?Toadbert –The preceding undated comment was added on 04:11, 2 July 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

The multicolor trees are a result of the old leaf decay code using the leaf block subtype ("metadata"/"damage" value) to store information about the distance from the trunk. Such leaves and the sapling types dropped from them will not occur again, and will be treated as oak if replanted. —KPReid 18:13, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Old leaves texture from the beginning of time

I was looking through the Version history of pre-indev and I noticed that there used to be a different leaves texture. Glass property?

It seems like you can't place torches or ladders on leaves anymore on fast or on fancy. I've yet to see any monsters spawn on top of leaves anymore when not lit on fast graphics where they are supposedly solid. Does this mean they have a similar properties as glass (can't place torches on/monsters can't spawn on glass) etc. CatchingFyre 19:57, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Yes because thous are all properties of non-opaque blocks, leaves being one of them. In the past leaves where opaque in fast graphics allowing you to place torches on them, but this was fixed from the coding filed of view and now they are always non-opaque in properties.--Yurisho 16:17, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Player-placed leaves now persist through time

Regular tree naming is inconsistent

In the section about the leaves' colour, we find this:

this is the usual oak tree's leaves texture

and

this is the usual tree's leaves texture but with the spruce tree's leaves color

Which is correct? Haosys 00:23, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Decay drops vs. player destroyed drops

The question is simple: Is there a difference in drop percentage of when a leaf decays from when a player destroys the leaf manually?

I read both the article and the discussion through twice and I can't seem to find any details on the matter of this issue. I know it's a very common discussion on YouTube, so I'm surprised it's completely unmentioned here. If I missed it, please be kind and put me in the direction. - Muskar 23:18, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, nothing affects the drop chance. The relevant bit of code doesn't even know how the leaf block was destroyed (decay/mining/etc.), and doesn't care about the Fortune enchantment. -- Orthotope 03:32, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Extreme Rare Drops

I have experienced that on occasion very rarely a golden apple will drop from leaves.

Golden Apples do not drop from trees. I'm sure of this. It's probably a plugin or a mod.71.58.178.166 03:41, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

#0018/4

On a server that I play on, I found I had 2 separate stacks of 20 Oak Leaves, but I couldn't put them together in one stack. So I clicked "F3 + H" and it came up saying one of them was "#0018/0" and the other was "#0018/4" I think it might be a swamp oak leaves and normal oak leaves, but that doesn't seem very likely. does anyone else know what this problem is? --Penguiany 14:26, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

They're both oak leaves, but the 18/4 ones were probably placed by a player and then re-collected. See Data values#Leaves. -- Orthotope 19:49, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Cherry Leaves

What is this cherry leaves thing about? I can't find anything on it here, but it doesn't say anything on the page. 71.58.178.166 03:43, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

There's a mod that has those. It's in one of the big mod packs. Vanilla does NOT have cherry trees or cherry leaves.

Leaves' Drops in Freshly Generated Jungle

I'm playing Minecraft 1.4.6. I wondered a freshly generated jungle biome and found lots of oak saplings and a couple of apples just laying on the leaves and grass. What is it? I remember one more case when I found an apple on the ground in my tree farm under freshly grown tree. I was pretty sure that I had destroyed every leave block in it and had collected all the drops before leaving the farm previous time. That was in 1.3.2 or even earlier. I'm not 100% sure about this case, but I'm perfectly sure about jungles because it was the day before yesterday. I can recall that I've read something about it in the wiki (probably in screenshot description) that sometimes leaves can grow in unsuitable place and then they decay immediately. Is this the case?

And another question about leaves regrowing. Yes, I've read above that (now) they don't regrow. But is this true about previous versions? Because in 1.3 (or may be earlier) I can recall some situations when I didn't cut the top of a tree (oak), and when I returned, there was a ball of leaves covering a single wood block from all sides, including bottom, where trunk was. Probably it concerns the jungle trees to. But I'm not 100% sure about all this. I think, I need to check it in creative with 1.2/1.3/1.4. 213.5.197.183 06:15, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

My Oak Tree Leaves Change to Yellow?

I just went on my minecraft and I saw that one of the oak trees had these yellow leaves. I thought that that was the only oak tree that was yellow but when I went closer to the other oak trees around, their leaves turned yellow too. And then I tried putting an oak tree leaves block to see if it would be yellow or not. It was yellow. Any idea why the leaves turned yellow??? And this is only happened for the oak trees. 99.107.166.237 06:28, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Jungle Tree Leaves - yellow spots - Aren't those fruit?

The wiki pages says:
"The jungle leaves use a yellowish tint in some areas to get a different shade of green, due to biome colors" (From under the picture of Jungle Leaves at the bottom of the article.)
Where does this idea come from? It doesn't even make sense to me. In game, the yellow spots do NOT at all look like they are adding variety to the tones of color. Maybe you guys need to look at it in Fast Graphics.

  • The jungle tree leaves clearly look: very green with yellow splotches.
  • They do NOT look like: a variety of yellow and green leaves, (plus, jungles are more green than yellow).

That's just my opinion, I had assumed they were supposed to look like fruit. *I've heard them called mangos, probably because mangos are the only jungle fruit people can name, if any. Most likely, they are just supposed to help the trees look like cocoa trees. Cocoa pods are yellow and grow in the branches, not just at the top of the trunk. So we can only harvest the cocoa from the trunk, but the texture designer of the leaves was trying to make them look like there are cocoa pods in them. Doesn't that make a LOT more sense? The cocoa trees look like cocoa trees? Saying those FEW and DISTINCT yellow ovals are supposed to add yellow tones to the green leaves is insulting to whoever designed the jungle leaves texture, because they did a --- poor job if that's the case. The yellow should have been more broken up and distributed. If that sentence, quoted above, was just made up by somebody, it should at least be removed. --50.181.85.8 00:28, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Opaque leaves removed?

Hi, I noticed that in the 1.8 block texture file, the leaves_x_opaque.pngs were missing. Is this an intentional change, or a mistake of some kind? I have a feeling that this would greatly mess with some resource packs. -108.40.188.138 20:57, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

It seems intentional, the opaque leaves now load their texture from the non-opaque leaves, and fill in any blank area white. --KnightMiner (t|c) 15:24, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Not necessarily white. It just clamps the alpha values to 255 (100%). So if a pixel is black with an alpha value of 0 (normally invisible), it will become fully opaque black. Invisible red would become red, etc. Most image editors, when deleting pixels, just set them to transparent black/white and ignore colours previously there. It is however possible, as seen in the default textures, to keep the color data while using an alpha value of 0 to achieve the desired effect (fast graphics has correct background colors in the parts that are transparent in fancy). [Techy4198]86.134.116.18 21:45, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
That is actually very helpful information for me, the leaves in my resource pack have looked terrible in fast since that change. KnightMiner (t·c) 15:53, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Fire and leaf blocks

The article claims that fire will destroy leaf blocks and not drop anything. I'd like to know if this is new behavior.

Past behavior was very clear: Fire would break the leaf blocks normally, drop an item, and that item was likely, but not guaranteed, to be destroyed by the fire before you could collect it.

Keybounce (talk) 16:09, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

It is not new as far I can remember, fire has always burned blocks without dropping resources, notice why wood planks do not drop when burned. KnightMiner (t·c) 16:15, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

"When leaves are pushed by a piston, they are destroyed without dropping an item."

I'm almost certain this isn't true. I've been pushing leaf blocks with pistons all day and have harvested a healthy collection of saplings from them. Has anyone confirmed this in 1.10? Tango Tek's recent wither-free AFK tree farm also seems to use pistons to replenish saplings.

BrendanAdkins (talk) 23:13, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

I don't see any indication that it was ever true. The claim was added in Special:Diff/prev/443366, probably rewording something originally added in Special:Diff/prev/344053. Anomie x (talk) 11:12, 15 July 2016 (UTC)

Since they are different types of trees, deleting two would not make sense. It might make more sense to move one to "Leaves.png", since it belongs to half of the types of trees. The others would be deleted. The BlobsPaper 14:24, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

New leaves decay algorithm?

The "old algorithm" on the page is from Alpha, and isn't used anymore. Should the new algorithm be added to this page? I don't know much about it, but I just found that leaves will not decay if there is a path made of leaves with a distance of four blocks or less to any log. Testing was not very thorough, more testing required before posting if considered notable. The /fill command with its replace option is useful for replacing air without replacing logs, if it helps test. NickNackGus (talk) 03:08, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

That new algorithm you're describing, with the 4 blocks and so on -- that's already on the page, under Usage. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 04:08, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
