Rewrite

This page should probably be rewritten or at least recategorized - I find it quite absurd that a block like Bedrock appears 4 times. If we are to recategorize the blocks, perhaps doing it according to the Blocks template (Natural, Strucutres, Manufactured etc) would be one way to organise it. GoandgooTalk

Item frames in End

The Elytra spawn in an item frame, if that's not counted as a block, then my bad. Just in case it is I thought I'd mention it here. Lukey140701 (talk) 02:14, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Item frames are entities. –LauraFi - talk 02:22, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for clearing that up. Does that mean blocks are collidable and entities aren't? Lukey140701 (talk) 02:23, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
For the most part. Shulkers and boats are exceptions though, and while not solid, mobs can push the player. KnightMiner t/c 03:14, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Replace the Template1.png image

I think it would be better to have something like the table used in the German wiki instead of the Template1.png image, which is often not updated. --185.28.54.220 21:39, 26 April 2016 (UTC)

The German one looks pretty nice, yeah. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 21:43, 26 April 2016 (UTC)
Maybe there should be all the different kind of wool, wood and so on --185.28.54.220 21:53, 26 April 2016 (UTC)
It should be a relatively simple task, the hardest and most tedious part would be translating all of the block names (if one were to simply copy and paste the table format from the German version). I do agree, it would look nicer and would be far easier to update than a .png image. Shall we get this going? Superspace (talk) 21:01, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
The drawback to that approach is the number of images needed. There are around 220 block IDs in use; including variations, around 300 separate files would be used. Even with relatively small thumbnails, that could add significantly to page loading times and increase server load. It might be better to make something like File:DataValues.svg: since the source svg file is just plain text, it wouldn't be too hard to update. -- Orthotopetalk 22:27, 19 June 2016 (UTC)

This Section Requires Update

This section requires update. There's new block called Structure block and until now there's no entries about it. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Kevin609 (talkcontribs) at 04:55, June 8, 2016‎ (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

The page appears to contain only blocks naturally-generated by the world. Of course there are a few new blocks that generate with the world in 1.10‌[upcoming]:
Overworld structures: Dark Oak Wood planks and fences, Acacia Wood planks, logs, stairs, doors and fences, Spruce Wood planks, logs, stairs, doors and fences, Grass Paths, Bone Block and Coal Ore
Nether naturally generated: Magma Block
though I can't do that at the moment, I may later or someone else can. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 12:21, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
Done. Did 1.10 blocks, and also igloo blocks which weren't all there. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 16:53, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Rewrite

I really like the new Item page and I think we could replace the naturally generated block list with the grid icons like the Item page. AFAIK there's no way to add air and grass path using the {{Slot}} template, so that's a problem. I tried to add them but I think some things went wrong... --Capopanzone (talk) 13:46, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Did you use the 'Edit Sprite' function on Template:InvSprite? Was that the thing that was messing up? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 14:47, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
I added the grass path sprite to the spritesheet and then I saw that edit sprite button, so I added both grass path and air. We just need that Slot thing (icon, name & link) for air, grass path and the three types of command blocks. Can you add them? --Capopanzone (talk) Capopanzone (talk) 17:09, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
I just tried using the 'edit sprite' button, and it put it right back on the blue (chain) command block. Which is what you were seeing, I think.
Dug a little around, found this discussion (Template_talk:InvSprite) where it seems those command blocks are animated sprites, which aren't handled by the InvSprite template. What happens is, it finds it's not on the InvSprite list of IDs, so it falls back and looks for a file named 'Grid <name>.png', and tries to use that instead. That's why {{Slot|Chain Command Block}} works at all. That sprite is not coming from InvSprite, it's coming from File:Grid Chain Command Block.png Long story short, that's probably why command blocks are getting overwritten, and also why that's probably okay.
If you're looking at Grass Path page and it shows a blue command block, that's a server caching issue, and should clear up for you within a few hours. Or try another browser. That caching only affects browsers that have visited the page within the cache period, and we see that most noticeably with images.
So everything's okay.
My only thing is, air isn't really an inventory item. Does it really need to be on the page? Air is only a block in a technical sense; it belongs on listings of block IDs and things like that, but do we need it here? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 18:07, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
Personally I don't consider air to be a "real" block and I wouldn't add it, but it has its own page and it's listed on both the Template1.png image and the Blocks template, so I guess it should be there.
So, there won't be any issues with {{Slot|Command Block;Chain Command Block;Repeating Command Block}}, right? Also, I'd like to change the End portal icon, should I do it using the edit sprite feature? --Capopanzone (talk) 18:24, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
Air has its own page, and it's on that image, but I'm not sure I can go from there, to say it belongs in {{inventory slot}}. What I mean is, it's just not an inventory block. I can see the appeal of having it in there with all the generated blocks, looking nicely alongside them, but it's the use of {{inventory slot}} that bugs me.
But, you're right, {{Slot|Command Block;Chain Command Block;Repeating Command Block}} won't have issues. Or I don't think so anyway.
You bring up the End Portal icon, and yes, that does look weird, being purple and everything. Although, I think it's that way intentionally, because that's how it looks in the inventory. (Or, how it looked from 1.5 until 1.8; you can't obtain it anymore, and I think the sprite sheet should probably have it moved to the 'Outdated' section. I think the only reason it hasn't, is because there are hardly any practical benefits to recategorizing things versus leaving them alone, so no-one ever did it. But I digress.)
The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking {{inventory slot}} isn't really a good fit, and I'm not sure the sprite sheet itself should be shoehorned in that way to make it work. Although I agree with your initial idea, that it could look much better, like the Item page looks. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 18:53, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
Yes, this isn't the real use of the inventory slot template, but it just looks nicer than having some tables with IDs and data values. That reminds of the actual inventory, there would be an user-friendly list with textures, names and links to the respective pages and we could get rid of the hard-to-update Template1.png file. Let's leave IDs and other tech stuff to each block and the data values pages.
IMHO the End portal icon should be updated. The one currently used in the sprite sheet isn't the last icon the block had (it was the black-magenta squares texture). If we want to stick with the game, it shouldn't even have the name "End Portal", as the game uses "tile.null.name"
I'm doing some tests on my user page, check them if you want! --Capopanzone (talk) 19:27, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

The list is ready to be ported here, check my user page! It's similar to the Blocks template, but I've split and moved some grouoped blocks (e.g.: andesite is in the Natural blocks category, while polished andesite is in the manufactured one, redstone blocks are all split because I feel like they're different enough) and merged some categories (the natural blocks contains liquids, ores, Nether and End blocks; manufactured and mineral blocks are merged).

Before porting it here I'd change the End portal icon. It doesn't have an icon anymore, so let's make it resemble the actual block! --Capopanzone (talk) 23:02, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Don't show the block images in the item form

Some blocks have no item form, and the nether portal block is a cube instead of a pane. Could you use block images with 32 - 64 px? --HaydKenMutthew Talk 09:07, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Removed blocks

@Pokechu22: Per MCW:UPTODATE, historical content does not belong in the article, only the history section (and removed features). MajrTalk

I feel like this article is a special case still. It's not an article that's intended only to inform on a single block, but also has a list of all blocks that ever existed and serves as an index to get to those pages visually (like the navbox, which also links them). The Mob article is much the same way (including Rana and similar); to me it doesn't make sense to exclude those historical mobs from a general list of them either. --Pokechu22 (talk) 16:03, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Incomplete

Can someone make sure the list of blocks is complete, or at least add an "incomplete" template to the article? I know that it's at least missing rails. an_awsome_person (talk) 07:52, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

Rails are listed under §Mechanisms. Probably most of the other ones are also listed in similar ways... --Pokechu22 (talk) 16:25, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
When I looked there, I only saw detector rails. The changing images are annoying. an_awsome_person (talk) 17:59, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

Block classification

Instead of making a bunch of sections and listing a few blocks in each one, I think we should have a big list or table with every block in it. The classifications are subjective, and many blocks fit in multiple sections. an_awsome_person (talk) 17:59, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

Remove the Template1 image?

I doubt this image is useful. It's quite large, so you have to click it to view the file page, and then click it again to see it on the entire screen... and that's probably a much worse experience for mobile devices. It is also only going to get larger as new blocks get added.

I also find other issues with the image:

  • Difficult to update or modify, including translation.
  • Not obvious what it does better than non-image content (such as a table).
  • Differences between editions may cause difficulties with maintaining the image, especially given it's not easy to modify.
  • And it likely messes up mobile devices because it's too wide.

--AttemptToCallNil (report bug, view backtrace) 19:30, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

I agree. However if the image is removed, I would kind of want to see a different sorting/grouping of the blocks on the page. It's currently sorted to some custom categorization, but it would be better if there was a creative inventory ordering as well or instead. The image provides a fast overview of blocks that are closely related by type, where as stuff on the page is currently only loosely grouped (and not really sorted) by purpose/function, which isn't a very tightly defined organization anyway. – Jack McKalling [ Grid Book and Quill Grid Diamond Pickaxe ] 19:39, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

Also the "slots" behind each icon are pretty distracting to the overview as well, if you're at that. Maybe if the slots are connected, like when using {{inventory|type=large-chest}}. Or remove the slots altogether and keep just the Template:BlockSprites. – Jack McKalling [ Grid Book and Quill Grid Diamond Pickaxe ] 19:59, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
