This article is about the mob that spawns in the Nether. For the enchantment that increases underwater movement speed, see Depth Strider.

Striders are passive mobs that spawn in the Nether on lava seas. They can walk on lava and be saddled by the player. A warped fungus on a stick is needed to properly direct a strider, similar to how a pig is controlled by a carrot on a stick.

Spawning

2 to 4 striders spawn in the Nether on spaces of lava that are two blocks tall with an air block above. Because striders are passive mobs, spawning attempts are made every 1. For every strider that spawns, there is a 1 in 10 chance of an additional baby strider to spawn riding on top of the previous strider. A baby strider on the adult strider continues to grow although it does not dismount the adult strider once it has grown up. Zombified piglins have a 1 in 30 chance of spawning on top of any given strider, and if that happens, the strider spawns with a saddle. The zombified piglin also does not despawn (except on Peaceful difficulty).

Drops

In Java Edition, adult striders drop 0–5 string upon death. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-8 with Looting III. In Bedrock Edition, adult striders drop 2–5 string upon death, unaffected by Looting.

A strider with a player-equipped saddle drops the saddle upon death. If a strider spawns wearing a saddle, the saddle has an 8.5% chance to drop, increased by 1% per level of Looting.

When an adult strider is killed by a player or tamed wolf, 1–2‌[JE only] / 1–3‌[BE only] experience is dropped.

Behavior

Unlike most mobs, striders can walk on lava. If the strider has the Speed effect applied to it, it moves faster on both land and lava, although its speed over lava increases more than over land.

Upon being harmed by another mob, striders attempt to flee for a few seconds while making "retreat" noises.

Striders can also walk on other mobs as if they are solid blocks. Small mobs cause a strider to step up as if walking on stairs or slabs.

Striders are damaged by water and rain, which damages them at a rate of 1♥ every 0.5 seconds and can die from it. Striders still take damage from rain even if they are in lava. However, they are not harmed when hit by a splash water bottle or when standing in a filled cauldron. They also cannot be harmed by snowfall or snowballs.

Striders outside of lava change to a lavender color, change their expression to more of a frown, and shiver. They also move slower when outside of lava.[1]

If a zombified piglin is riding a strider, the strider pursues the player if the zombified piglin is angered.

A baby strider on an adult strider still grows into an adult. Adult striders walking on other adult striders do not spawn naturally. Baby striders not walking on an adult will follow the closest adult strider.

Riding

Strider riding

A player riding a strider. (Click to see the animation)

The player can ride on an adult strider using a saddle and can attach them to leads. Similar to how pigs are controlled using a carrot on a stick, striders will move forward automatically while their direction is influenced using a warped fungus on a stick.[more information needed] The warped fungus on a stick can be used, causing the strider to boost and walk at a greater speed, which takes durability from the warped fungus on a stick. They also follow players holding a warped fungus or a warped fungus on a stick. Saddled Striders being ridden by players never move on their own accord when not being directed.‌[Java Edition only] Striders still move freely when ridden by a player not directing it.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

Players riding striders into the lava from heights do not dismount if the strider submerges into the lava, and striders quickly rise back up to the surface if this happens. However, players risk getting burned by the lava themselves by doing so.

A strider ridden into flowing lava slowly rises to the top.

When ridden over land, striders automatically walk up any one block high slope.‌[Java Edition only]

When being ridden (by a player, Zombified Piglin or another strider), a strider will not be attracted to warped fungus, even if not being directed.

Breeding

Main article: Breeding

If striders are given warped fungus, they breed to create baby striders, granting the player 1-7 experience orbs. The parent striders have a cooldown of 5 minutes before they can breed again. All babies obtained through breeding take 20 minutes to grow up. The growth of baby striders can be slowly accelerated using warped fungus; each use takes 10% off of the remaining time to grow up.

A diamond is a mineral that can only be obtained from diamond ore, loot chests and suspicious blocks. It is required to craft diamond tools and armor (and therefore obtain obsidian to access the Nether), enchanting tables, jukeboxes and duplicate smithing templates.

Obtaining
Tutorials/Diamonds
Mining
Diamond Ore#Natural generation
Diamond ore can be mined using an iron pickaxe or stronger. An ore drops a single diamond. If mined by any other tool, it drops nothing. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune, it can drop an extra diamond per level of Fortune, allowing for a maximum of 4 diamonds with Fortune III. If the ore is mined using a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch, it drops an ore block rather than a diamond. The ore is found at level 15 or lower, most commonly between -50 and -64; levels -58 and -59 are the preferred levels to mine at since they don't contain bedrock, as it starts spawning at -60.

Chest loot
Suspicious sand
When brushing suspicious sand in desert pyramids, they have a 1 chance to drop a diamond.

Usage
Diamonds are mainly used to craft high-tier armor and equipment, which in turn are also used in making netherite armor and equipment.

Crafting ingredient
crafting usage

Trading
bedrock, expert-level armorer, toolsmith, and weaponsmith villagers buy one diamond for an emerald as part of their trades.

java, journeyman-level armorer villagers have a 40% chance of offering to buy one diamond for one emerald. Expert-level toolsmith villagers have 2 chance of offering to buy one diamond for one emerald. Expert-level weaponsmith villagers always offer to buy one diamond for one emerald.

Repairing
Diamonds are the repair items for the diamond tier and armor material, and thus can be used to repair the following items in an anvil or grindstone:
* Diamond Helmet
* Diamond Chestplate
* Diamond Leggings
* Diamond Boots
* Diamond Sword
* Diamond Pickaxe
* Diamond Axe
* Diamond Shovel
* Diamond Hoe

Beacons
Diamonds can be used to select powers from a beacon. The player must select one of the available powers then insert a diamond into the item slot.

A diamond can be substituted for an iron ingot, a gold ingot, an emerald or a netherite ingot.

Trivia
*Unlike in Minecraft, newly mined diamonds in real life are rough, cloudy stones. The largest, purest ones are polished into crystal-clear gemstones, while the rest are used in industry for cutting and grinding.
*Although diamonds themselves are not renewable, all tools, weapons, and armor made from diamonds can be acquired through trading, and are therefore renewable. Other items crafted from diamonds are not renewable.
*In the April fools version Java Edition 2.0, diamond chickens can lay diamonds. This does not exist in newer versions, as this was a joke.
*The item forms of diamonds and turtle eggs have the same shape.

Ghast tears are items dropped by ghasts. They can be used to make potions of Regeneration and end crystals.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Ghasts drop 0–1 ghast tears. Looting increases the maximum ghast tears dropped by one per level, for a maximum of 4 ghast tears with Looting III. Looting also works when knocking back a fireball with an enchanted item.

Smithing templates are items used in smithing tables to alter tools and armor. They are consumed when used, but can be duplicated using an existing template, its material and diamonds.

The sixteen armor trim smithing templates are found in a variety of structures, and are used to apply various decorative trims (dependent on the variant) to armor using certain minerals for different colors.

Netherite upgrade smithing templates are required to upgrade diamond equipment with a netherite ingot. They are only found in bastion remnants, but are guaranteed only in treasure rooms.

Obtaining
Smithing templates can be found in various structures and can be duplicated by using seven diamonds and a block based on what the template is.

bedrock, spire, tide, and dune armor trims can be duplicated with more blocks than java. In addition to the normal blocks, Tide armor trims can be duplicated using Prismarine Bricks or Dark Prismarine, dune armor trims can be duplicated with smooth sandstone, cut sandstone, or chiseled sandstone, and spire armor trims can be duplicated with purpur pillars.

Mob loot
Elder guardians have a 20% chance to drop 1 tide armor trim upon death. Looting doesn't affect this percentage, and the elder guardian doesn't need to be killed by a player in order for the trim to drop and can be duplicated with prismarine.

Armor trim smithing templates are used to customize an armor piece's appearance by using a smithing template, an armor piece, and an ingot or crystal (emerald, redstone dust, lapis lazuli, amethyst shard, nether quartz, netherite ingot, diamond, gold ingot, iron ingot, or copper ingot). Including all dyed leather armor colors and regular armor, there are ≈3.679x109 different possible armor pieces<!--5713438 leather colors, plus the 4 other armor materials = 5713442. 5713442 * 161 (the 160 trim combos (16 trims, 10 materials) + untrimmed) = 919864162. 919864162 * 4 (helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots) = 3679456648 ≈ 3.679x10^9-->, and 7.16x1035 <!--919864162 + 1 (no armor in that slot) = 919864163. 919864163^4 = 715969952015045562662444917041515536 ≈ 7.16x10^35 total possible armor combinations-->total possible armor combinations excluding enchantments and the player not wearing armor.

Already trimmed armor can be trimmed again by applying another template on it; the old trim pattern is overwritten in the process. Therefore, one piece of armor cannot possess multiple trims at the same time.

Most armor trims cover a small portion of the armor piece's surface with the trim material, except for the silence armor trim, which allows the trim material to cover a majority of the armor piece's surface.

All of the trims are purely decorative, and don't impact gameplay or strength(without the use of mods or plugins) of the armor they are applied to in any way. Piglins do not pick up any gold-trimmed armor pieces, and they are not pacified by players wearing even a full set of gold-trimmed armor (unless, of course, the armor pieces in question are themselves golden), and netherite-trimmed armor pieces can still be burned by fire.

* Smithing templates were named "Smithing Blueprints" in the prototype but was changed because the word "blueprint" sounded modern and technical.
* When Mojang developer Gnembon was working on armor trims, he accidentally messed up their rendering, making them jet through the player's body in a weird fashion, similar to what appears in Salvador Dalí's paintings where a hand might poke through a forehead.
* Some of the armor trims feature patterns based on a mob or block that is found in the same structure as the corresponding smithing template.
** The spire armor trim resembles a shulker.
** The vex armor trim resembles an evoker. As an item in the inventory, it resembles the wing or the vein texture of a vex.
** The wild armor trim has moss growing on 3 of its corners.
** The coast armor trim appears to have barnacles attached to it.
** The ward armor trim, as an item in the inventory, resembles the faces inside a warden's chest.
** The silence armor trim appears to have sculk creeping onto / infecting it.
** The tide armor trim resembles prismarine bricks.
** The snout armor trim resembles a piglin.
** The rib armor trim resembles a wither skeleton.
** The eye armor trim resembles an eye of ender. There are also two eyes on the head part of the armor trim that resemble those of an enderman.
* Netherite upgrade smithing template (35 characters with "_" and 32 characters without "_") and sentry armor trim smithing template (35 characters with "_" and 31 characters without "_") are the current longest name for item ID, while polished blackstone pressure plate and cracked polished blackstone bricks have 34 characters with "_" and 31 characters without "_".
* The silence armor trim is the rarest trim, due to being found in ancient cities in the deep dark, and having only a 1.2% chance to be per chest.
* When lapis lazuli is used as trim material, it is called "Lapis" instead of its full name "Lapis Lazuli"; this is the only instance of the abbreviation "Lapis" being used in-game.

beta 1.16.0.63Striders now move faster to resemble a boat's speed on water.

Issues

Issues relating to "Strider" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

Trivia

 • Striders are the only passive mob that spawns in the Nether.
 • Striders are the only (non-zombified) mob introduced in the Nether Update that does not zombify when leaving the Nether.
 • Striders are the only mob that can spawn in every Nether biome.
 • Striders are the only mob that can naturally spawn with a saddle.
 • At one point in the strider's development, before it was added to the game, a strider out of lava would retract its legs start to take damage and bounce around until they died, similar to how fish suffocate when out of water. This feature was discarded for being too sad.[4]
 • Part of the reason that striders drop string was to answer the question of "how do piglins make crossbows?"[4]
 • The bobbing animation the strider makes was initially an accident. However, the developers thought it was "quirky and fun", so it was added as a feature.[4]
