The ocean is a common aquatic biome consisting predominantly of water. Oceans are the largest biome by area, covering anywhere around 25-33% of the surface area of the Overworld when factoring in all of its variants, and consists of a deep body of water with the surface at an altitude of Y=63 by default, which is counted as the "sea level" of the world.

Description

Oceans are vast expanses of water, going from sea level all the way down to the ocean floor, which is at a depth of roughly Y=45. The seafloor is fairly hilly, featuring multiple peaks and valleys, and is mostly made up of gravel, though some clay, dirt and sand patches may generate near the peaks. Ravines can occasionally generate on the ocean floor, forming underwater trenches. Some seafloor peaks may reach high enough to form islands on the surface of the ocean; these islands are typically small beaches surrounding a patch of a common biome, such as forest or plains. The seafloor is covered with seagrass and kelp, with "forests" of kelp frequently reaching close to, or even touching the water's surface. Aquatic mobs, such as cod, squid, and dolphins, frequently spawn within oceans. Shipwrecks and underwater ruins frequently generate within all oceans, more often than other structures in other biomes. Deep ocean variants can occasionally generate ocean monuments.

Survival in ocean biomes themselves is impractical due to all the water, though should one decide to camp on an island in the ocean, they will face a rather difficult situation. Ocean biomes are quite vast; one might not find mainland for hundreds or even thousands of blocks. This means that whatever resources found on an island might be all the player has to work with, should they decide to not venture out or be unable to do so. Depending on the island's size, however, the only hostile mobs that the player consistently might have to worry about are drowned from the ocean itself, which makes nighttime less dangerous. See the Island Survival article for more info.

Variants

Oceans come in ten different flavors in-game; including the base ocean, eight different normal variants and one unused variant, for a total of ten different ocean biomes.

Deep Ocean

In the Deep Ocean variant, the ocean can exceed 30 blocks in depth, making it twice as deep as the normal ocean. The ground is mainly covered with gravel. Ocean monuments generate in deep oceans, meaning guardians and elder guardians can spawn here. Dolphins, cod, and squid spawn in these oceans as well. Underwater caves and ravines often generate here, forming underwater trenches. Exposed lava in these trenches will occasionally turn into magma blocks, creating whirlpool bubble columns that can potentially drag a player down to their death, so one must be careful around them.

Frozen Ocean

The Frozen Ocean variant has dark purple water at the surface. Like the cold ocean, it has a gravel seabed, though the water's surface is mostly frozen. Neither seagrass nor kelp generates on the sea floor, leaving it entirely barren and reminiscent of pre-1.13 oceans. Large icebergs made of snow blocks, packed ice, and blue ice frequently generate on the surface and polar bears and strays may spawn on these icebergs. Salmon and squid may spawn here as well, and are the only aquatic mobs (other than drowned) that can.

Similarly to swamps, frozen oceans have varying temperatures across their landscapes, but have a more noticeable effect in that colder patches have snowfall and ice sheets, while warmer patches have rainfall (up to a certain height, similarly to mountains) and unfrozen water. This does not apply to their deep variants, however.

Frozen oceans, along with their deep variants, will never generate directly bordering land. They will always have a 32 block-wide border of cold ocean around them should they generate close to any land. However, this border is very jaggy and broken.‌[Java Edition only]

Deep Frozen Ocean

Deep Frozen Ocean variants also contain ocean monuments and a deeper floor than normal oceans. Unlike its shallow counterpart, the surface of the water is not frozen, however, the surface is completely frozen in Bedrock Edition. Icebergs may still generate and polar bears, strays, and salmon may still spawn.

Cold Ocean

The Cold Ocean variant has dark indigo water at the surface. Like regular oceans and frozen oceans, its floor is made up of gravel, although there are scarce patches of dirt, sand and clay on underwater peaks. Salmon, cod, dolphins, squid and drowned are able to spawn in cold ocean biomes, alongside all the other common hostile mobs.

Deep Cold Ocean

The Deep Cold Ocean variant is similar to cold ocean biomes, but twice as deep. Like other deep oceans, ocean monuments are able to generate here, which contain guardians, elder guardians, prismarine and sponges.

Lukewarm Ocean

The Lukewarm Ocean variant has light teal water at the surface. Its floor is made of sand with the occasional dirt, gravel and clay and it contains kelp and seagrass. Underwater ruins that generate in lukewarm and warm oceans are made of sandy materials, as opposed to the stony materials that make up ruins in the other oceans. Cod, tropical fish and pufferfish may spawn here, alongside the other aquatic mobs.

Deep Lukewarm Ocean

The Deep Lukewarm Ocean variant is similar to lukewarm ocean biomes, but twice as deep. Since they are a deep ocean variant, they can generate ocean monuments, resulting in the spawning of guardians, elder guardians, prismarine and sponges.

Warm Ocean

The Warm Ocean variant has light green water at the surface. Like the lukewarm ocean, it has a floor made of sand, and like all except frozen oceans, it is populated with seagrass. Warm oceans feature large coral reefs and numerous sea pickles, though kelp does not naturally generate here. Tropical fish and pufferfish may spawn here, like in lukewarm oceans, though cod does not spawn.

Like frozen oceans, warm oceans never generate directly touching the land. They will always have a 32 block-wide border of lukewarm ocean around them should they generate close to any land. However, this border is very jaggy and broken.‌[Java Edition only]

Deep Warm Ocean

The Deep Warm Ocean variant is similar to warm ocean biomes, but without coral reefs nor sea pickles, and twice as deep. Since they are a deep ocean variant, they can generate ocean monuments, resulting in the spawning of guardians, elder guardians, prismarine, and sponges. This biome does not naturally generate, though it can be generated using a Customized Superflat world or the appropriate Buffet world options.

Legacy Frozen Ocean

Information icon
This feature is exclusive to Bedrock Edition.

The Legacy Frozen Ocean variant is similar to frozen ocean biomes, but without icebergs, making it look like flatlands of ice. Polar bears and strays can spawn in here. Unlike regular frozen ocean, rabbits can spawn in here which has snowy texture. This biome was exist prior 0.9.0, but become unused and not replaced by new frozen ocean in 1.4.0. This biome does not naturally generate, though it can be generated using a biome editor or addons.

minecraft:dupe_hack is a joke item from Java Edition 23w13a_or_b.

Obtaining
Once the <code>dupe_hack_occurrence_chance</code> vote is approved the dupe hack item has a random chance of dropping whenever an entity with chests is killed by a player, e.g. when destroying a minecart with chest with a sword.

It doesn't appear in the creative menu, not even when the option "Operator Items Tab" is enabled, but can be given to the player with <code>/give</code> and other commands.

Usage
The dupe hack item can be used to create a limited amount of duplicate items by placing it on a crafting table with any other item. It has a random chance of breaking, controlled by the <code>dupe_hack_break_chance</code> vote. This limitation can be mostly bypassed by putting the items in an ender chest first and duplicating the chest.

When using the Dupe Hack, it has a random chance of breaking, which is often decided by votes.

Many blocks have a preferred tool to break them. Some blocks can be broken only with certain tools. The tool's material also affects how fast a block is mined. Materials from worst to best in terms of mining speed are wooden, stone, iron, diamond, netherite, gold.

Item durability
Durability

Different tools have different amounts of durability. Some uses require more durability to be used than others. A tool's durability is also affected by its material. Materials from worst to best in terms of durability are gold, wooden, stone, iron, diamond, netherite.

Some tools are not block-breaking tools: This includes bows, fishing rods, carrots on sticks, flint & steel, and buckets. Such tools are no better than bare fists at breaking blocks, but they do not take damage from doing so—they take damage from being used in their own intended manners.

Steak (java) or cooked beef (bedrock) is a food item obtained from cows, mooshrooms, or from cooking raw beef.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Cows
When a cow or mooshroom is killed, it drops raw beef. If a cow dies while on fire, it drops steak instead. If the cow is killed using a weapon with the Looting enchantment, the maximum number of steak drops increases by 1 per level.

Cooking
Raw beef can be cooked in a furnace, smoker, or campfire. Each steak removed from a furnace output slot gives 0.35 experience (22.4 experience per stack).

Villager gifts
java, butcher villagers may give players steak if they have the Hero of the Village status effect.

Usage
Food
To eat steak, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 8 hunger and 12.8 hunger
saturation.

Wolves
Steak can be used to breed and heal tamed wolves, lead them around, and make baby tamed wolves grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time.

Mob loot
Tutorials/Iron golem farming
Iron golems drop 3-5 iron ingots upon death, regardless of the way they die. The looting enchantment does not increase the amount of iron ingots dropped.

Zombies, husks, and zombie villagers have a 2.5% (1) chance of dropping either an iron ingot, carrot, or potato when killed by a player or tamed wolf. This is increased by 1% (1) per level of looting. This gives iron ingots the following chances of dropping:
* 1 (about 0.83%)
* 7 (about 1.17%) with Looting I
* 9 (1.50%) with Looting II
* 11 (about 1.83%) with Looting III

Nether quartz is a white mineral found in the Nether.

Obtaining
Nether Quartz Ore#Natural generation

Mining
Nether quartz ore mined using a pickaxe drops one unit of Nether quartz. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune, it may drop an extra unit per level of Fortune, up to a maximum of four with Fortune III. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Silk Touch, the ore drops itself.

bucket

Usage
Empty buckets can be used to "pick up" a water or lava source block by pressing use item on a block of the relevant type. If the empty bucket is part of a stack and the player's inventory is full, the filled bucket drops in front of the player as an item.

A bucket filled with a source block can then be used to place its source block contents in the empty block next to the side of the block the player is currently looking at, or replacing the block looked at for some replaceable blocks.

One can press use when looking at a cow, mooshroom, or goat to fill a bucket with milk. A bucket full of milk can be emptied only by drinking it or by using it in crafting a recipe (like cake).

A bucket full of water can be used on a live aquatic mob (cod, salmon, tropical fish, pufferfish, axolotl, or tadpole) to collect the mob in the bucket for transportation to another location. The mob in item form becomes a bucket of aquatic mob.

An empty bucket can be used to empty a cauldron with water or lava, filling the bucket with the fluid. This does not work with dispensers.

A lava bucket placed in the fuel slot of a furnace becomes an empty bucket after the lava is consumed during smelting.

An empty bucket fills with water when placed in the fuel slot of a furnace while smelting a wet sponge.

An empty bucket can be used to collect powder snow, filling the bucket with powder snow. Emptying the powder snow bucket places the powder snow block in the empty block next to the side of the block the player is currently looking at.

An eye of ender is a craftable item used to locate strongholds and activate the end portals within them.

Obtaining
Crafting
Usage
Locating strongholds
To locate strongholds (and the end portals they house):
* Pressing use while holding an eye of ender causes it to fly approximately 12 blocks in the direction of the nearest stronghold, traveling through any blocks necessary, and leave a trail of purple particles, the same particle effect used for endermen and ender chests.
** The eye leads to the chunk where a spiral staircase, the first room generated in the stronghold, is located.
** The center of this entrance staircase is always exactly at the chunk coordinates 4, ~, 4, although the eye of ender leads to chunk coordinates 0, ~, 0 (the northwest corner of the chunk).
* While over 12 blocks away from the northwest corner of the staircase chunk, the eye will travel upward to offer an easily-visible indication of the horizontal direction the player must travel.
* When closer than 12 blocks to the northwest corner of the staircase chunk, the eye will travel downward, to indicate the player is above a stronghold and must mine downward.
* After two or three seconds of travel, the eye floats in the air briefly, then either falls (becoming collectable again) or shatters in mid-air. The eye has a 20% chance of shattering (80% chance of surviving) per throw, therefore throwing it three times has approximately 50% overall chance to shatter the eye (0.83=51.2%).
* The eye of ender's flying function works only in the Overworld. It does nothing in the Nether, the End, custom dimensions, or in worlds with no strongholds.

Note that the eyes may point to an incorrect location if the target chunks were generated with a different biomes map in an older version or through different generation settings.

Activating end portals
Once an end portal is found, the eyes of ender are required to activate it. End portals require a total of 12 eyes of ender in order to activate, though each individual frame-block has a 10% chance of containing an eye of ender when generated. Eyes can be placed in empty End portal frames by pressing use on them until the entire ring of 12 is filled, thereby activating the portal. Due to the fact that there is a 10% chance of each individual end portal frame having an eye in it, there is a one out of one trillion chance of every frame having an eye in it thereby activating the portal even if the player doesn't have any eyes of ender.

Trivia
*When thrown in third-person view, the eyes of ender fly out from the player's feet instead of their hand.
*Before Java Edition 1.9, eyes of ender can be purchased from cleric villagers, which means players can find a stronghold and go to the End without accessing the Nether at all.
*bedrock if the player travels beyond a certain radius (roughly 740,000 blocks), eyes of ender always point to a stronghold near spawn, even though strongholds continue to generate past this limit. If one travels to this limit, they can see eyes of ender suddenly switching direction. A similar phenomenon occurs with the locate command.

Suspicious stew is a food item that can give the player a status effect that depends on the flower used to craft it.

Obtaining
Bedrock, suspicious stew is the only food item in the game that can be obtained from the Creative inventory only by searching. However, it can be crafted and can also be found in shipwreck chests. Suspicious stew can be given with commands like give, but java, unless NBT data like that listed in the data values section is included, consuming it has no effect and still restores the same hunger points as a normal suspicious stew. In Bedrock Edition, giving the player a suspicious stew through commands causes the stew to choose an allowable status effect at random.

Harvesting
Suspicious stew can be obtained by "milking" a brown mooshroom with a bowl after using a small flower on it. When a small flower is used on a brown mooshroom, the brown mooshrom produces a suspicious stew related to that small flower the next time it is milked with a bowl. Red mooshrooms do not produce suspicious stew. The brown mooshroom returns to producing mushroom stew until fed another small flower.

Crafting
Suspicious stew is not listed in the recipe book. However, it can be quickly assembled by clicking the mushroom stew recipe and adding one small flower to it.

Chest loot
suspicious-stew

Mob loot
After being given a flower, a brown mooshroom can be "milked" for suspicious stew by using a bowl on it. The flower type determines the stew's effect using the same rule as a crafted stew. Milking a red mooshroom after feeding it a flower does not yield a suspicious stew specific to that flower.

Trading
java, expert-level farmer villagers can offer either 1 or 2 suspicious stew trades, each stew for one emerald.

bedrock, expert-level farmer villager offers to sell suspicious stew for one emerald as well.

The trading interface does not indicate the type of suspicious stew being sold, but each trade entry consistently yields the same type of stew, so the player can remember or make a note of the types offered by a given villager, such as "this villager's first stew gives blindness, and their second entry gives saturation".

Usage
Food
Tutorials/Hunger management
To eat suspicious stew, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 6 hunger and 7.2 hunger saturation and gives a few seconds of a status effect that varies depending on which flower was used to craft it. The effect is not displayed in the tooltip, texture, etc., meaning that the player cannot know in advance what the effect is without knowing which flower was used.

The bowl is emptied and returned to the player after the suspicious stew has been eaten, and can be re-used to craft more stews. Unlike most foods, suspicious stew can be eaten even if the player's hunger bar is full.

The Saturation effect effectively makes those two stews a superfood: In those 6 or 7 ticks it can restore up to 6(7) hunger and 12(14) saturation points on top of their food value, for a total of at least 12 hunger, and effectively maximizing saturation. This is the largest amount of hunger and saturation the player can get from a single food item. Regeneration can restore up to 3 health, and Poison or Wither can inflict up to 4 damage.

Consuming suspicious stew is the only way to obtain the Saturation and Blindness effects in vanilla Minecraft without the use of commands.

Lapis lazuli is a mineral required to enchant items in an enchanting table.

Obtaining
Mining
When mined with a stone pickaxe or better, lapis lazuli ore drops 4–9 lapis lazuli. With the Fortune III enchantment, a single block has a chance of dropping up to 36 items.

Villager gifts
java, cleric villagers give players lapis lazuli if they have the Hero of the Village effect.

Trading
Apprentice-level cleric villagers sell one lapis lazuli for an emerald as part of their trades.

bedrock, wandering traders may sell 3 lapis lazuli for an emerald.

Chest loot
Lapis Lazuli Ore#Natural generation
lapis-lazuli

Usage
Enchanting
1–3 pieces of lapis lazuli are required to use an enchanting table to enchant an item. More specifically, the enchanting table UI shows 3 options (see Enchanting mechanics for details): the first, second, and third options cost 1, 2, and 3 lapis lazuli, respectively.

Crafting ingredient
Lapis lazuli can be used to make blocks of lapis lazuli and blue dye. bedrock, it can also be used directly as a substitute for blue dye.
crafting usage

bedrock, lapis lazuli can be also used in banner patterns:

The debug stick is an item used to edit the block states of blocks. It is visually identical to a regular stick, but with a glint (as if enchanted).

Obtaining
The debug stick is obtainable via commands such as /give or /item, or the Creative inventory if the player has the appropriate permissions. It can be obtained only in worlds with cheats on.

Usage
The debug stick can be used to change block states. Hitting the block allows players to select the block state key they wish to change, for an example, switching between the conditional and the facing block state keys for a command block. Using the block allows them to cycle through the valid values for the block state key, again as an example, the player can make the command block face, down, east, north, south, up, or west if they chose the facing block state key. Sneaking while hitting or using cycles through the block state keys or values in reverse order.

It is notable that using debug stick directly on an interactive block without sneaking uses the block itself instead of the stick.

The debug stick cannot be used while in Survival or Adventure mode. It works only in creative mode with cheats enabled. In modes other than Creative, it acts like a regular item — although when using it on a block, the player swings the stick as if interacting with it (but nothing happens).

A sword can be repaired in an anvil by adding units of the tiers' repair material, with each repair material restoring 25% of the sword's maximum durability, rounded down.

Mob loot
Drops#Equipped items

Some mobs can spawn with a sword and have an 8.5% chance of dropping them upon death caused by player. This chance is increased by 1% per level of Looting, up to a maximum of 11.5% with Looting III. Zombies and husks can drop iron swords, zombified piglins and piglins can drop golden swords, and wither skeletons can drop stone swords. The dropped sword is usually badly damaged and may be enchanted. Stone swords dropped by wither skeletons are never enchanted.

A vex wields an iron sword that normally has a 0% chance of dropping, because their main hand's <code>HandDropChances</code> is 0. However, this chance increases by 1 percentage point per level of Looting. It is never damagedjava and may be enchanted.

be, pillagers and vindicators that spawn from raids have a 4.1% chance (5.12% chance on hard mode) of dropping a damaged iron sword. This sword has a 50% chance of being enchanted.

Trading
bedrock, an apprentice-level weaponsmith villagers sells enchanted iron swords for at least 7-21 emeralds, and a master-level weaponsmith sells enchanted diamond swords for at least 13-27 emeralds.

java, a novice-level weaponsmith villager has a 2 chance of selling an enchanted iron sword for at least 7-22 emeralds. A master-level weaponsmith offers to sell an enchanted diamond sword for at least 11–27 emeralds.

The enchantments of the swords offered by villagers are the same as the ones obtained from an enchantment table at levels 5–19.

Usage
Attacking
Pressing attack while holding a sword inflicts damage on both mobs and other players. Upon damaging a mob or player, the sword's durability decreases by 1.

Attacking a boat or a minecart with a sword stone tier or higher instantly destroys it java, without decreasing the sword's durability. Otherwise, it requires 2 hits, with neither decreasing durability.

Sweeping
If the attack recharge meter is 84.8% or above and the player is on the ground standing or moving slower than the sprinting speed in a straight line, the sword performs a sweeping attack indicated by a gale particle that reaches nearby enemies for 1 and knocks them back; the amount of knockback is 80% that of the basal knockback and does not benefit from the knockback enchantment. As result, the player can perform a sweep attack while they are sprinting diagonally but it is impossible to perform a sweep attack at the same time as a critical hit or while riding some entity. All enemies within an 1 by 0.25 by 1 block area of any part of the attacked mob and whose feet are 3 or less blocks away from player's feet are affected. The sweeping edge enchantment increases the damage dealt by 50% of the normal hit damage for level I, 67% for level II and 75% for level III.

Sword breaking times
Breaking

A sword can also be used to destroy certain blocks 50% quicker, sometimes much quicker than with fists. Using a sword to destroy any block that doesn't break instantly by hand decreases its durability by 2; this includes bamboo, despite that the sword is the fastest tool for breaking it.

If a sword is enchanted with Silk Touch, either using Creative or commands, cobwebs the sword destroys will drop the cobwebs themselves instead of the usual string. This is due to the sword being classified as the proper tool for cobwebs.

The following table shows the time it takes to break blocks on which swords have any effect. Colors indicate what gets dropped:
* White: an original block.
* Blue: block's normal drop (e.g. seeds, sapling, apple).
* Red: nothing.

Safety around constructions
In Creative mode, swords are unable to break blocks. However, care must still be taken around minecarts, paintings, item frames, java and armor stands; these are entities, thus can be broken with swords in Creative.

Blocking
Blocking

Previously, since the Adventure Update, all types of swords could be used to parry to block some forms of damage. If the player is blocking with a sword when attacked, the sword deflects 50% of incoming damage from melee, non-magical projectiles like arrows, and explosions, along with minimizing airborne knockback. The sword is held in front of the player and its durability is not reduced by blocking. The player moves at a slower rate than sneaking if blocking with a sword. Sword blocks could be engaged and disengaged instantly, with no delay between the input and damage mitigation nor cooldown between lowering a block and raising a new one.

After the Combat Update, the sword blocking functionality was replaced by blocking with shields and to accommodate the dual wield system. Shields negate more damage and knockback than sword blocking from "blockable" attacks (they block 100% damage and knockback after Java Edition 1.11), but, unlike swords, they lose durability, have a 0.25 second startup period before damage can be mitigated and can be temporarily disabled by attacks with an axe.

Knockback
The knockback dealt by swords used to be higher than while the players are using another melee items, like an axe or with the hands. This feature was removed in Java Edition 1.9 and is also no longer used in Bedrock Edition.

Trivia
*The sword's traditional texture came from Notch's abandoned RPG, Legend of the Chambered. The iron sword's texture was created first, as it was from the game, and the other swords followed.
*In Java Edition, with the introduction of netherite swords, it is possible to one-hit kill undead mobs in the game (except withers and zombies/skeletons with random armor) using a sword with the Smite V enchantment, without the need to perform a critical hit (this was previously possible only with a Smite V stone, iron, or diamond axe).
*Plastic diamond and enchanted swords are official Minecraft merchandise.
*In the game Transformice, a diamond sword can be found in the shop.
