Freeing up Version template

For:

:Module:Version/Numbers, :Module:Version and {{Version}}

... I'm going to make copied versions:

{{escaped link|:Module:Version front page/Numbers}}, :Module:Version front page and {{t|Version front page}}

... to free up that whole thing from its cascade restriction – the same idea as previously with {{ItemSprite}}, discussed in this topic.

It won't solve the issue with people clamoring for someone to update the front page, but it will help for updating Minecraft, Pocket Edition, Console Edition and Minecraft launcher (and probably a few others). – Sealbudsman ^talk/_contr 15:19, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Because the front page was late being updated, I was researching how it worked when I ran across your updated Template:Version doc saying it wasn't used on the front page...yet it very clearly was in use there. Color me confused! I almost put a note on Majr's talk page in case it was by accident. So I'm guessing I caught it while you were in the middle of coordinated changes. I'm not sure adding a separate template for that is a good idea given it is for the most part only used on the front page, and the other few places tend to be fine waiting a bit for the update. The front page gets the most questions waiting for the update anyways.

Directly on the page are: {{Version}}, {{FrontPageLink}}, Minecraft Wiki/edition and Minecraft Wiki/style.

Protection cascades further to: :Module:Version, :Module:Version/Numbers, :Module:FrontPageSprite, {{escaped link|:Module:FrontPageSprite/IDs}}.

If cascade was removed, we could heighten permission on Template:FrontPageLink, module:FrontPageSprite and /IDs, and /edition and /style, and I think that's all. Would a good idea be semi-protecting the remainder? From what I've seen so far here anonymous users don't make good edits to templates often, if they even get to them. --Hubry (talk) 22:37, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

I doubt that creating a duplicate template for the front page will solve anything because most users who complain about updating the version numbers complain only because the version numbers on the front page aren't updated. Ideas so far

To allow more people to update the versions on the front page, we could:

change the protection to directors.

And if we want to free up the Version template, instead of using a duplicate template, we could do one of two things:

remove cascade from the main page, raise the protections on other transcludes and semi-protect the version template, or
hard-code the variables in the page. (rendering the Version template mostly redundant)

As far as I know, the only place where the current version numbers are actually used are the Edition pages (Minecraft, Pocket Edition, Console Edition etc). Using hard-coded variables would make the template pretty much redundant, wouldn't it? | violine1101^(Talk) 09:39, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

Blobs2, please remember that indefblocking an IP address is considered a bad tone because this action, if the address is not static (which means the user isn't switching addresses after each connection), may cause other innocent people to be under the block. Abuse Filter Issue

I attempted to edit Tutorials/Setting up a server to remove information on and the section relating to Evolve (the VPN), as Evolve ceased operations on June 1, 2017, according to their website EvolveHQ. However, I was blocked from removing the section by an edit filter barring new users from removing a section. Seeing that I am not allowed, could one of you remove the information please? Image cacheing

Can anything be done about the image caching taking the better part of a day to refresh? It seems to me that when you upload a new version of a file, that should be propagated out to all caches, but this doesn't happen. Is the length of time we wait totally necessary? Ok, I'm reading about it more, and the situation is acknowledged in MediaWiki's CloudFlare manual at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:CloudFlare#HTTP_purge, and reported at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T64356: MediaWiki cannot purge single assets cached in CloudFlare. I've had that issue too earlier. It was really weird because my IP address is completely different and I'm in a completely different part of the world than what IP lookup sites give me.

Anyways, tell him to log out of Gamepedia and delete all Gamepedia cookies (MCW cookies might be enough, but I've cleared all of them) - I've done that and that fixed it for me. --Hubry^(talk) 18:42, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Some users are sent over an Amazon proxy to reduce page load time, which also changes their ip adress to that proxy. This should only happen for mobile users though, but it sometimes also happens for desktop users. Bots not showing as bots

Bots such as Ffbot are not showing up as bots in edit logs and :Special:RecentChanges, aka b is not showing next to the edit which means "Show/hide bots" does nothing at all. Can someone tag bots as bots? – Nixinova 16 px 16 px 16 px 04:27, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

Bots don't get flagged as such automatically, and if no one requests a bot flag for them, chances are they'll go without. Also, if the request was rejected to get the bot right, the correct thing to do would be to not make contributions using the bot instead of making them without the tag. I cannot imagine any reason why he would want your bot to operate without the bot tag.

What exactly is the bots purpose anyways? Most of the contributions I have seen are useless whitespace changes or other tweaks that do not affect the final rendered page. New Language Persian

Hello. The Persian (Farsi) translation project did exist before, but has been deleted by Majr (the main administrator of Minecraft Wiki) on July 9 as part of the recent cleanup of translation projects. You need to consult this question with him, but basically what you need is to translate the main page to Persian, and that’s the only requirement so far. Hungarian Wiki

Nearly a month ago, Emberbot changed the Hungarian wiki's main page that only admins can edit it. It does not matter if you have an active admin on the wiki. But because there are no, so there are only foreign admins can change it.

youtu.be banned

When I went to edit my userpage, I got the following edit message when submitting it:

Almost every URL shortener is prohibited here, as there is no reason to use them. Saving a couple of characters does not make any significant difference, and they hide the true destination of links. -- Orthotope^talk 10:36, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Can youtu.be in particular be reconsidered? From what I'm aware, youtu.be never links to anything except a YouTube video, and the part after the slash is the video ID - the same ID used by the full link. Even if it is not unblocked, it is YouTube's default method of sharing a link to a YouTube video, so it will continue to cause confusion. If it isn't removed from the spam filter, then can the spam filter warning be changed to explain that URL shorteners are blocked, and maybe link to this noticeboard or elsewhere with the reasoning and how to get the full URL? While I will agree its Youtube's default method of sharing, we really have no reason to make an exception here, especially since it just adds one more way to link the videos which will certainly cause a disagreement over consistency in the future. Err, according to Special:Interwiki, the URL used for "ftb" is "//ftb.gamepedia.com/$1" (and the others in the same situation). It should be changed to "https://ftb.gamepedia.com/$1", for consistency if anything else. -Xbony2 (talk) 19:46, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

Adding confirmation tweet to 1.13 page

I noticed Badprenum share a tweet from Dinnerbone on the forums about the upcoming change in block metadata. Because the 1.13 wiki page only contained a quote from Grumm dated from March about him working on it I concluded that this specific (more recent) confirmation about the removal of block data values would be useful. The system decided otherwise & blocked me based on a keyword. IP addresses are spamming the pages

Yes, as it could reduce the spam of IP addresses. I also suggest that the "Save page" button will be disabled unless "Show preview" or "Show changes" is clicked so they won't continuously edit pages if they made an error in their edits, thus, making them think another time to really reduce spam. – Dentedharp90041^t^c 10:55, 8 August 2017 (UTC)

CSS fixes

Please change div#mw-panel div.portal div.body in MediaWiki:Hydra.css to div#mw-panel div.portal since the 1.29 upgrade seems to have changed the sidebar's html structure, as well as the spacing between the portals (collapsible lists) in the sidebar. The spacing can be undone by adding

#mw-panel h3 {
	margin-top: 0px !important;
}

to Hydra.css. (I'm not sure whether the !important is really needed, it probably will work without as well.)

Replacing admins

The current activity of four administrators (Majr, Orthotope, Goandgoo and Dinoguy1000, although the latter went missing for 4 days except yesterday) doesn’t pose any problems. But, if a new admin is ever required, I would directly go for assigning KnightMiner as the most fitting user for this role.

And, for the sake of interest, I will say how Russian wiki has solved the problem of inactive admins in the last 3.5 years (if you’re not interested, skip this paragraph). In the last 2013, most of the Russian administration’s veteran members (led by HEKP0H) practically disappeared, leaving only one administrator with somewhat stable activity (that is AttemptToCallNil, then still known as GreenStone). Four admins experienced some periodic activity since then (SYSanin235, Shahter40, Bloodhit and Atributz, and also Norrius, a former admin who was resigned in 2013 by his own request); they all went inactive, with the exception of Atributz, who returned in early 2015 and, after some inactivity, in recent months. Ivan-r was appointed via his own request by Wynthyst in December 2013 (apparently when AttemptToCallNil went inactive for a short time), right now he is periodically active. AttemptToCallNil was later granted bureaucrat rights in July 2014. After Ivan-r, four new administrators were appointed by the new bureaucrat: Asassin 1 (January 2015), BloodCaster (January 2017, after a two-year hiatus; both on my suggestion) and, on last July, Dand0 and me. Last month AttemptToCallNil initiated an unusual procedure: he chose eight candidates (one was later discarded immediately as an unreliable one) for administrator status, and opened votes for them. The result was appointment of the two last administrators. And now, at ~~four~~ five continuously active and two partially active administrators, Russian administration is probably the largest on Minecraft Wiki.

Anyway, back to the English wiki. The wiki’s policy states that

“	Administrative rights are given to users based on them making exceptional contributions to the wiki, rather than by request. An exception is on other languages of the Minecraft Wiki which have few or no admins, in which case a request is likely to be accepted.	„

This point of view is far from being implemented practically. By this point of view, KnightMiner should be already appointed an administrator by Majr or Dinoguy1000 without any request, but he isn’t, and any request for appointing KnightMiner would be rejected based on this policy, even if he is a good candidate for this. Also, the last administrator was appointed on April 2014 (that was Goandgoo), which makes the current administration seem a little bit old, unlike the Russian wiki’s administration, which has four new members assigned since that period, with one in 2015 and, after two years, a record number of three in 2017.

Side note: I'm surprised how many inactive admins on the Russian wiki actually still have their rights. On the German wiki, an admin is asked to retire if they are inactive for a few months. (See here. The actual founders of the wiki still have their rights, and Oliver Scholz is still involved with the wiki although he doesn't edit regularily.)

I would hardly describe my inactivity as "going missing"; I can still be reached via my talk page here, email, or on Discord for those who want to look me up there. Other than that, I make no particular effort to maintain any particular level of activity here, both because generally I only edit when I notice something needs fixed or want to reply in a discussion, and because I have to fight with internet connectivity issues on my laptop that make wiki editing far more of a pain than it should be.

I've stated in the past that I have no problem with promoting users to admin by community request, in spite of the guidance on MCW:Directors, since that guidance is quite old (though of course, Gamepedia staff would have final say on whether that policy should still be enforced, and I'd abide by their decision in that case). Similarly I wouldn't be opposed to demoting inactive admins after a suitable period of time (I'd default to one year with no edits or log actions performed), assuming notice has been given to the editor and a week or so provided for them to view and respond if they wish. In both cases all that's required is to ping me to ensure I see the discussion.

I'm not entirely sure we need more administrators as well. Sure, we have several inactive admins, but that has been the case for awhile without the current ones being overwhelmed to my knowledge. I don't see the need of appointing admins simply to have more admins at this current time. Instead, I'd focus on if a user frequently makes contributions that would benefit from those rights.

On the topic of me being an administrator, while I would not be opposed to being appointed and I have had uses for the rights in the past, I am not sure how beneficial it would be at this moment. Small edit war over Pocket Edition 1.1.6

There seems to be a minor edit war developing over whether there is a Pocket Edition 1.1.6 update. In an exchange I had with user Ff98sha, he reported that this update number was used in a special Store panel (picture) shown only to Chinese users. (The notice reportedly informs them that they will not receive the 1.2 or later updates in China.) This is apparently the notice mentioned in the August 17 Content Update changelog, which carries no update version number. I'm told the 1.1.6 version number does not appear on the main menu in China and there doesn't seem to be any evidence of it in the usual authoritative sources. Certain users have attempted to create a {{escaped link|Pocket Edition 1.1.6|page}} for 1.1.6 and link it into the version chain, while other users have attempted to undo the link and mark the page for deletion. As a result, these pages are pingponging without discussion toward reaching a consensus.

The main problem is the August 17 Content Update changelog. It has no version number because it only updates Marketplace items; there was no change to the game. Someone said this was made possible by the 1.1.5 update making the Marketplace content purely data-driven, specifically so that new Marketplace offerings could be released between game updates. We haven't seen a purely content update before and therefore have no consensus on how—or even whether—to document it in the wiki. I think it's likely these updates will happen very frequently, so documenting them would be a burdensome task. Not only that, it would be uncomfortably close to advertising since these are content products being sold by third parties. I believe it would be helpful for the admins to weigh in on this question, and that it would put an end to the budding edit war. --– Auldrick (talk · contribs) 09:03, 20 August 2017 (UTC)

Link to profanity and obscenity

In this edit [1], Oldosfan added a link to a Hastebin copy of the file Minecraft (Bedrock) 1.2 uses to censor words in chat. I felt it was inappropriate (sensitive kids might follow the link, vandals might cite it as a license to make similar links), unnecessary (since when do we link to updated program files from our history pages?), and a possible a violation of Gamepedia's TOS (indirectly adding profanity and obscenity, linking to material that violates copyright). When I removed it [2], Oldosfan reverted it [3] with the edit summary "If something is a gray area, it stays up until told to go down *by the admins*". I don't think there's any such rule, and wp:Be Bold authorizes what I did. Am I wrong? And secondly, should the link should stay? --– Auldrick (talk · contribs) 14:11, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

If something "is a gray area", there needs to be a damn good argument for including it in an article, and it being a "gray area" that "the admins" haven't struck down isn't such an argument. Education Edition: remove unjustified protection

That page, which has had many beneficial IP edits in the past, was recently the site of a small edit war. The result? An infinite semi-protection under the reason "Excessive vandalism". "User page" navigation button redirects to the "Profile" page while NOT viewing UserProfile namespace

When you're on your own User talk page or the User page itself, the left navigation button for "User page" redirects you to your "Profile" page. I expect that the User namespace is set to automatically redirect to the UserProfile one, which I understand, but the navigation buttons should not redirect because the profile already has its own navigation button and it would be misleading. The "Profile" button currently targets UserProfile:Myname which is correct. The "User page" button should be changed to target User:Myname?profile=no, instead of User:Myname as it is being redirected to a different page than it claims. This only applies while you're not viewing the UserProfile namespace itself however. Because the "User page" button will only correctly lead to the actual user page, when viewed from the page it is redirecting to. It's not really much of an issue, but it is a bit misleading and I guess it requires an administrator level to fix. What do you guys think about this? Either your default user page is a user profile or user wiki; it does not vary depending on how you get there, unless you manually put UserProfile or UserWiki in a link. However, the links in the sidebar cannot be edited. The Blobs^16px 14:24, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

I don't know if you understood my problem or not, but it's not true what you're stating, Blobs. It does vary, as that's exactly the issue, or are you trying to say that you cannot reproduce it? The links in the sidebar have nothing to do with the navigation buttons as far as I'm aware. The default user page can indeed be either my profile or wiki page, but that was already said/implied. As a resolve I've already set my user page as the default one over my profile, so this is not an issue anymore for me in this setting, but I'm still wondering whether the issue will still be considered under the other one. Update Steve, Alex and Herobrine

There are new versions available for :File:Alex.png, :File:Steve.png and :File:Herobrine.png. As the latter two are both protected I request one of the admins to perform the upload. I won't change Alex until Steve is updated, otherwise the animation on The Player would get even worse. Files can be found on the German wiki: :de:Datei:Alex.png, :de:Datei:Steve.png and :de:Datei:Herobrine.png.
Both Alex and Steve need an update as Steve is currently a bit larger wich makes the animation on The Player quite shaky. Ah, how I miss editing this wiki sometimes. It's been a long time.

In one of my fly-by checks on the Herobrine page, of which I still feel quite proud of facilitating and check every few months or so, I saw this change. I do not understand why this "MHF_Herobrine" user is being considered canon for Herobrine appearances. all appearances during the stream, the creepypasta and Mojang adoptions feature the beard. I argue the beard is the canon skin, not "MHF_Herobrine"'s version of the skin. Therefore, I have reverted the skin.

If this "MHF_Herobrine" is really important, I would suggest adding a section about the alternate skin, creating a "skin swatcher" of sorta a-la Here, or making it an animated gif. But canonically, Herobrine does have a beard, and always has.

I'll go back to trying to sort out this twitch account merge thing now. That's the main reason I've come back for just a short while.

Edit: I have since been made aware that MHF is an official Mojang skin pool of sorts. While I now better understand the change and reasoning for it, it should be noted that Mojang are not the creators of the Herobrine hoax and all origin skins show the beard, as well as legacy promo material.

I continue to affirm that the legacy skin is canon, and further believe that the Mojang team don't really have a right to change the canon of Herobrine's appearance canonically, especially due to the repeated denouncing of any future plans to add him in-game. But it most certainly would be relevant for a trivia or smaller section on the page, with the newer skin included as an image.--User:Kizzycocoa 01:44, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

As an update, I’ve had a brief conversation with Marc, and the Herobrine skin has been change to his canon appearance to the original lore. Minecraft Wiki broken

Can confirm this problem on the Russian wiki. The error occurs even on pages not in somebody’s own watchlist. Edits not being registered in the recent changes creates a good opportunity for malicious edits not being seen (in fact, I have discovered such an edit on the Russian wiki while browsing last revisions). Some special pages and other things are broken too. I don't get to see my level badge on my profile anymore, just my wiki points. Now that the user is blocked for a month, I went through some of their contributions, and I have a lot of doubts about their content. Should some of their work be reverted/changed back? Some stuff has gone down in their respective page's history already, and I'm not sure what edit is or isn't acceptable. For instance, their Creeper edit which is its latest, seems to hide the fact they removed information (the XP drop) by re-arranging the drops into a bulleted list. I kindof want to revert it, but he did the same bulleted list to the blaze page (not removing XP drops that time) but that edit was a month ago already. I notice some aggressive mob pages have a bulleted list and some don't, but on these two pages I feel it isn't needed. I don't like inconsistency either. I think it could work to allow a piece of content to become bulleted if; A) the items can be systematically summarized if that makes it easier to read, B) the unbulleted paragraph of text would otherwise become too much information all over the place, C) there are enough items to make a reasonable list of over 3 items, and D) there are not too many items and bits of information in each that would be better placed in a table. As my own rule of thumb for such a thing. Because lists are not always the best solution on a wiki, we don't want everything in lists, but for some occasions it may be unavoidable.

... But regarding this user, one of such edits that I have doubts on, is the latest Spider one. Where did they get those chance numbers from for instance? Or what about the move of the Village structures pages, were those good moves? Do you need my help with any verification or anything else? Permissions problem on the profile since PRO activated

I was just messing about with my Echo badges in my stylesheet, then I changed the setting to "Show talk page message indicator in my toolbar" (unchecked it) and hit save preferences, and suddenly I became a PRO user according to my profile page (and my signature here while previewing). Then I could not use the comment system anymore on the profile pages, not even on my own, as it now warns me I have no permissions for that (anymore!). I tried reconfirming my email address as suggested, but that didn't change anything. I also now get a supposed warning message when I try to change that setting from before, and although it does save, the warning says I cannot edit this profile without email verification. I don't even know what this setting does, hence why I tried it in the first place. Also, I checked my gamepedia account page, and it does state I have an active PRO status, which expires 2/7/2018. I don't have exactly 1k wikipoints yet, so I can't think of any reason why this automatically would have happened. Communityportal messed up navigation (mediawiki related, not edit history)

For some reason the wiki page of the community portal has messed up the mediawiki navigation elements. The div#mw-navigation is suddenly inside the div#content, where normally it should be its sibling. The navigation appears in the same place as the page content, making it invisible to read and overlapping stuff that it shouldn't. It's got nothing to do with the page's edit history, as its last edit did not have this problem before and currently viewing a previous revision does not have any effect. Also, an edit could not have caused an HTML element to have moved into one of its siblings like this. 500 Internal Server Error

I've been trying to revert an act of vandalism on the fire article, but whenever I try to do so it keeps throwing this at me: 500 Internal Server Error nginx/1.10.3 (Ubuntu)

I also got the same error between editing pages of translations of certain pages. Earlier I also noticed gamepedia's Cheevos Service was unavailable and caused all profile statistics to revert to zero, and although the service appears to be back again and statistics with it, I believe some statistics might have gone lost in between. I now consistently get 520 server errors on a lot of pages, letting me wait a while before the page loads successfully, even on the hydra stylesheet file itself (making everything look like the built-in Vector skin). Sometimes I get the host error page from Curse if a page doesn't load, and sometimes the page then loads automatically moments later directly from that error page. This is a host problem according to the error, but why and what can be done about this? It really slows down work, and it's been like this for a few days. I'd say just ban them both. If someone is violating the rules, they have no business here. They are also inserting nonsense so it's not only 2 but also against rule 4. The Russian wiki is currently experiencing a wave of vandalism by a very persistent vandal (it's likely just one person) who is using the situation to deface the site unimpeded. Just today they've made 12 vandal edits and created 8 vandal pages, not counting actions rejected by abuse filters. Without proper blocking capabilities it's not possible to adequately react to the vandalism. I reverted all their edits, taking into account any conflicting edits that happened afterwards by others. I personally tested whether mushrooms generate in witch huts prior to 1.13 snapshots in a brand new 1.12.2 world, and they don't. No, you won't have to buy the game again. Once bought, you may download the game as many times you want. You could even save the download and transfer it to your other PC via memory stick if you need to do it without internet connection. Minecraft Wiki/edition (fully protected page) contains an error

On above mentioned page there is an accidentally closed div element in the middle of a table, due to the "end of table" symbols being interpreted as a parameter for the enclosing template call. See the line with |}, which pipe should have been escaped like: {{!}}}. I've fixed this exact problem on {{escaped link|Minecraft_Wiki/hu/edition}} already. You could compare the revisions to see the strange effect on the navigation header buttons this problem has, and how my edit fixed that, if this didn't explain it very well. I'd edit it myself, but the page is fully protected. Main page does not reflect Windows 10 update to 1.2.8

:Template:FileUrl is expecting the wrong result from {{filepath:}} (solved)

This template expects the string returned from {{filepath:}} to be a URL that starts with:

https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/media/minecraft.gamepedia.com/ (example). But instead, the filepath returns this:

https://d1u5p3l4wpay3k.cloudfront.net/minecraft_gamepedia/ (equivalent example).

Which is shorter, and consequently causes the template's string logic to strip the xx/xx part out of the URL, as a net result after it processed :Widget:FileUrl. This incapacitates :Template:FrontPageLink visibly on both its own page as well as on the transcluding main page. You can see the effect because the image from above examples is not visible on those pages. Inspecting the page shows the evidence of the stripped URL:

https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/media/minecraft.gamepedia.com//FrontPageSprite.png. Notice the double slash before the file basename.

I don't know why {{filepath:}} gives this external URL, and I don't know why both URLs function correctly. Maybe one of them is intended to redirect to the other. But before looking into fixing the logic of the template, does anyone know exactly where the fault lies? In this case, it doesn't really matter what's going on with the URLs; since the template was using the wrong URL in its logic, it would always return the wrong value, unless that URL just happened to match the length of the correct URL. To me the URL did matter, as I couldn't tell which was the wrong one. But I guess you indeed don't have to know if you compare the same URL with itself like you did. For some reason, the updated template does not work on the Russian wiki if the size parameter is provided or if the file name contains non-Latin characters, test cases here. It's because Widget:FileUrl still had a hardcoded URL. I've removed it, which also allowed removing the whole stripping portion of the logic from {{FileUrl}}; there's no reason I'm aware of not to just use the URL returned by {{filepath:}} directly (well, the https: does have to be stripped and then re-added in the widget, since otherwise the colon gets escaped as %3A which breaks the value at least in Chrome, but it's still a far simpler and more robust solution than the previous version). So as it turns out, one component of the security concerns was with allowing arbitrarily-hosted files to be linked to. We can still use the auto-detection for the details of the upload URL in the template, but it will have to be hardcoded in the widget, at least for the foreseeable future. As for the Unicode filename problem this reintroduced, I just didn't look closely enough at the actual URLs being served in the CSS; as it turns out, they were being double-encoded: first by fileurl:, and then a second time by escape:'urlpathinfo', which escaped the percent signs to %25.
