This page lists generated structures in Minecraft. A generated structure is defined as any structure that is disabled when the "Generate structures" world creation option is turned off. Some structures, such as dungeons and desert wells, do still generate with this option turned off; however, they are listed on this page due to them having the appearance of an artificial structure as opposed to a natural formation.
The Overworld
The Overworld contains numerous generated structures, at a wide variety of scales.
Underground structures
Structure | Location(s) | Description |
---|---|---|
Mineshaft | Underground in any biome, but closer to the surface in badlands biomes. | Contains long passageways with rails on the ground, some with minecarts with chests on them. Cave spider spawners may generate here surrounded by cobwebs. |
Stronghold | Underground in any biome; a maximum of 128 can generate in a single world.[JE only] | Stone brick structures containing many rooms, including an End portal room. |
Small structures
Structure | Location(s) | Description | Rarity |
---|---|---|---|
Fossil | Underground in deserts and swamps, not to be confused with the nether fossils included later on this page. | Structures made of bone blocks and coal ore. | Rare |
Buried treasure | Under beaches. | A single hidden chest containing loot, most easily found using a treasure map located in Shipwrecks and occasionally in ocean ruins. | Super Rare |
Ruined Portal | Anywhere in the Overworld or Nether. | A structure containing what appears to be a destroyed nether portal and various types of stone or blackstone materials when generating in the overworld or nether, respectively. Netherrack generates on the ground around the portal, and a chest generates with the structure. | Rare |
Underwater structures
Structure | Location(s) | Description | Rarity |
---|---|---|---|
Ocean ruins | In all ocean biomes. Can spawn on the ground/islands. | A collection of structures made of stone bricks (frozen, cold, or regular oceans and deep variants) or sandstone (lukewarm, deep lukewarm, and warm oceans) that spawn drowned. | Rare |
Shipwreck | In oceans and beaches. | Wooden structures containing up to three loot chests. | Common |
Ocean monument | In deep ocean biomes, any temperature. | Large prismarine structures containing guardians and wet sponges, along with eight blocks of gold as treasure. Three elder guardians generate with the structure. It generates like a maze of sorts, without any "hidden" rooms. | Rare |
Buildings
Buildings are naturally generating structures that form above ground. They can contain valuable treasure but may contain traps, puzzles, and hidden areas as well.
Structure | Location(s) | Description | Rarity |
---|---|---|---|
Desert pyramid | In desert biomes. | Large sandstone buildings containing four loot chests in an underground room trapped with TNT, hooked up to a stone pressure plate in the center. Triggering this trap destroys the chests and their contents. | Common |
Igloo | In snowy tundra and snowy taiga biomes. | Snowy buildings that may have a hidden basement (50% chance) beneath them. The igloo itself has a furnace and a red bed. The basement, if generated, has a villager and a zombie villager in iron bar cages. A brewing stand generates with a splash potion of Weakness. A loot chest in the basement contains a golden apple (which can be used to cure the zombie villager), and some other loot. | Rare |
Jungle pyramid | In jungle and bamboo jungle biomes. | Cobblestone structures containing two loot chests; one is trapped with two dispensers firing arrows. The other is hidden behind a lever puzzle. Setting the correct combination causes a block to move on the main floor, revealing an entry. | Uncommon |
Pillager outpost | In plains, desert, savanna, taiga, snowy tundra, and snowy taiga[BE only] biomes. | Tall wooden & cobblestone structures that spawn pillagers. There is a loot chest on the top floor. Around the outpost are small structures, including tents, target scarecrows, and wooden cages (sometimes containing an iron golem). | Semi-Rare |
Swamp hut | In swamp biomes. | Also known as witch huts, these are small wooden buildings, containing an empty[Java Edition only] cauldron and a crafting table. It spawns witches and (upon generation) one black cat. The cat and the first witch do not despawn naturally. | Rare |
Village | In plains, desert, savanna, taiga, snowy tundra, and snowy taiga[BE only] biomes. | A collection of buildings (houses, job sites, a meeting place, etc.) containing villagers, made of a wide variety of materials, depending on the biome that it generated in. | Uncommon |
Woodland mansion | In dark forest biomes. | Massive systematically generated three-floor dark oak wood structures. They contain many rooms (some hidden) and loot chests. They are inhabited by vindicators and evokers that do not naturally despawn. | Super Rare |
Miscellaneous structures
These structures generate even when the "Generate structures" world option is disabled, and also cannot be located with the /locate
command.
Structure | Location(s) | Description | Rarity |
---|---|---|---|
Dungeons | Underground in any biome, connected to caves. | A cobblestone room with a mob spawner (50% chance for zombies, 25% chance each for skeletons or spiders) inside. Contains up to two loot chests. | Common |
Desert well | In desert biomes. | A small sandstone structure containing five water sources in the middle. | Semi-Rare |
The Nether
The Nether, though equally vast, contains far fewer types of generated structures than the Overworld.
Structure | Location | Description | Rarity |
---|---|---|---|
Nether Fortress | Nether wastes and soul sand valleys.[verify] |
