Debug World Type Flyover 14w32d

The world generation in an SUPER early version of debug mode

Debug mode usually refers to a world preset used to test block states, block models, and textures.

Debug mode can also refer to a dimension generator type (minecraft:debug) that generates a blocks grid, which is used in the "Debug mode" world preset, and can also be used in custom dimension.

Debug mode can also refer to a state of a world, if the overworld uses the "debug" generator, the world goes into the debug mode state. In this state, blocks can't be changed even in creative mode or with commands.

Debug Mode World Preset[]

DebugModeButton

Debug mode selected; note that all of the other world settings are unavailable.

To select the debug mode, hold the Alt key while clicking the "World Type" button in the world creation menu. Debug mode is the world type directly after Single Biome, and just before default preset.

Upon selecting debug mode, the "Bonus Chest", "Generate Structures", "Allow Cheats" and "Data Pack" options are removed from the menu. The game mode is set to Spectator, and the difficulty is locked on peaceful, and cheats are enabled. The game rule doDaylightCycle is forced to false, while other game rules are forced to default value.

Debug Generator[]

The minecraft:debug generator contains all blocks, in all of their existing block states, organized in a single world. The world updates automatically to include any new registered block IDs that are added. Therefore, this mode is useful not only to Mojang developers, but also to creators of resource packs and mods.

Block grid[]

Every block state generates only once. They are sorted in a grid spread across an altitude of y=70. The block grid changes its size according to the number of blocks and block states available, roughly resembling a square (as of 1.14.2, 213 in width and 211 eastward), occupying the +X,+Z (southeast) quadrant.[1]

A barrier floor at y=60 also spawns, extending past the grid in all directions to the world boundary. Other than the barrier floor, the remainder of the map is empty.

Debug Mode State[]

Debug mode can refer to a state of the world. If the Overworld uses the "debug" generator, the world goes into the debug world state.

World Generation[]

Debug World Type hellview 14w27b

View of the Nether debug world

Debug World Type endview 14w29b

View of the End debug world

If a Nether portal or End portal is used, or teleported using /execute, the player enter other dimensions. The sky, light level and other properties remain appropriate to the dimension.

In this state, all the dimensions are forced to use the "debug" generator. The chunk rendering may not update by itself in these dimensions, resulting in the need to right-click a block to render a new chunk.

In the vanilla End, the ender dragon and its end crystals still spawn, although the dragon cannot break or interact with blocks.

World behavior[]

It is impossible to change, place or remove any block, even by the game itself.

Chunk's chunk tick (including random ticks) does not execute.

No entity spawns naturally.

Any block whose interactions do not change its block state can still be used (including chests, beds, cake, etc.). Although a block's state cannot change, its block entity data can change, either through normal player interaction or with the use of the /data command.

These unique properties of debug mode can cause certain blocks to behave in unexpected ways, though due to the arrangement of blocks next to one another, not all may be seen in every version:

  • Water and lava cannot be removed by buckets, but still fills an empty bucket in Survival mode. If the player empties the bucket, the lava or water blocks turn invisible.
  • Bells can still be rung.
  • Cauldrons clean leather armor and banners, but cannot be filled by buckets.
  • Flying through a pressure plate with powered stated false, or a weighted pressure plate with power state 0, causes it to produce the pressure plate clicking sound every tick it is pressed.
  • Using a comparator in subtract mode causes the block in the direction opposite its facing property to drop as an item.
    • Warning: If that block is a repeater or a comparator, it drops an infinite amount of itself, likely crashing the game.
  • Any summoned falling_block entities drops as an item when it hits another block, rather than converting itself to a block.
  • Using fence gates, comparators, deactivated buttons, levers, deactivated pressure plates, doors, or trapdoors does not move or change the block, but the sound still plays.
  • Using a music disc on an empty jukebox does not change its block state but still plays the music normally.

A beetroot is a food and dye ingredient.

Obtaining
Farming
Beetroots are obtained from harvesting a fully grown crop block, which drops 1 beetroot and 1-4 seeds (2 seeds per plant harvested on average). Seed yield can be increased using a tool enchanted with Fortune, with Fortune III harvesting an average of 5 seeds per plant.

These crops can be found growing in villages or can be grown from planted beetroot seeds.<!-- Do not add locations for finding seeds. Where to find seeds is described in the article about the seeds. -->

Usage
Food
A beetroot can be eaten to restore 1 hunger and 1.2 hunger saturation. Six beetroots can be crafted into beetroot soup, which restores six times the hunger and saturation of a single beetroot.

Crafting ingredient
crafting usage

Breeding
Beetroots can be used to breed pigs. Pigs also follow a player who is holding beetroot.

Villagers can pick up beetroot items to become willing, allowing them to breed. Villagers need 12 beetroots before they can breed.

Composting
Placing beetroot into a composter has a 65% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Trading
Novice-level Farmer villagers have a 25%bedrock or 40%java chance to buy 15 beetroots for an emerald.

Unit repair
An axe can be repaired in an anvil by adding units of the tier's repair material, with each repair material restoring 25% of the axe's maximum durability, rounded down.

Mob loot
Equipment
Drops#Equipped items

A vindicator spawns with an iron axe and has an 8.5% chance (9.5% with Looting I, 10.5% with Looting II, and 11.5% with Looting III) of dropping it upon death by the player. It is usually heavily damaged and is sometimes enchanted.

A piglin brute spawns with a golden axe and has an 8.5% chance (9.5% with Looting I, 10.5% with Looting II, and 11.5% with Looting III) of dropping it upon death by the player. Also, java, zombified piglins can drop their golden axe (with the same chance as piglin brute drop) if they have been zombified from a piglin brute.

Raids
be, Vindicator and pillagers that spawn in raids have a 4.1% chance (5.12% on hard) to drop a badly-damaged iron axe, which is sometimes enchanted with a random enchantment. A vindicator can drop 2 iron axes, one from natural equipment and one from raid drops.

Trading
Novice-level Toolsmith villagers have a 25% chance to sell a stone axe for one emerald, journeyman-level Toolsmith villagers have a 25% chance to sell an enchanted iron axe for eight emeralds, and expert-level Toolsmith villagers have a 50% chance to sell an enchanted diamond axe for 13 emeralds.bedrock

Novice-level Toolsmith villagers have a 40% chance to sell a stone axe for one emerald, journeyman-level Toolsmith villagers have a 40% chance to sell an enchanted iron axe for 7-22 emeralds, and expert-level Toolsmith villagers have a 66.67% chance to sell an enchanted diamond axe for 18-35 emeralds.java

Novice-level Weaponsmith villagers sell an iron axe for 3 emeralds as one of their trades, and master-level Weaponsmith villagers sell an enchanted diamond axe for 12 emeralds.bedrock

Novice-level Weaponsmith villagers have a 66.67% chance to sell an iron axe for 3 emeralds. Master-level Weaponsmith villagers always offer to sell an enchanted diamond axe for 18-35 emeralds.java

The enchantments are the same as the ones obtained from an enchantment table at levels 5–19.

Villager gifts
Toolsmith villagers occasionally throw stone axes at players with the Hero of the Village status effect.java

Weaponsmith villagers occasionally throw either stone, gold, or iron axes at players with the Hero of the Village status effect.java

Usage
Chopping
An axe is used to break logs, blocks derived from wood and some other blocks faster than by using other tools. An axe uses 1 durability to break 1 block. For blocks that break instantly, it uses 0 durability.

Durability
Each tier of axe has a different durability:

Stripping
Using an axe on a log, wood block, block of bamboo\, or block of copper causes it to become a stripped log, stripped wood block, block of stripped bamboo, or removes one layer of oxidization or wax, respectively. This consumes one point of durability from the axe.

Weapon
An axe loses 2 points of durability when used as a weapon.

Bedrock Edition
bedrock, axes always attack instantly and deal 1 less damage than a sword of the same quality but it lowers the durability of armor and shields faster than any other tool in-game.

Java Edition
Attacking a shield user with an axe should have a chance to disable the use of the shield for 5 seconds, but currently this always disables a shield. The base chance is 25%, plus 5 percentage points per level of Efficiency on the axe, plus 75 percentage points if attacking while sprinting. Vindicators, piglin brutes, or other mobs with commands always disable the player's shield. Damage done when using an axe as a weapon is more than that of a sword of the same tier, though they take longer than a sword to recover, resulting in lower <abbr title="Damage/Second">DPS</abbr> (with the exception of golden axes). 14w26aAdded Debug Mode world type.
Block entity graphics would disappear when a block is hit, door and trapdoor hitboxes were inconsistent with their state, and not all interfaces were accessible.
14w27aDifferent block states are used instead of metadata.
Options are disabled when creating the world, and the only game mode you can get upon world creation is Spectator Mode.
Block states now generate in a square pattern rather than in an infinite repeating grid.

A minecart with chest is a single chest inside a minecart, and functions as such.

Natural generation
Minecarts with chests containing loot naturally generate in mineshafts, each on top of a piece of rail.

Obtaining
Crafting
Minecarts with chests can be retrieved by attacking them. By doing so it drops as an item and any other contents of the chest are dropped as well.

Usage
Minecarts with chests can be placed by on any type of rail.

Chest minecarts' contents can be accessed by pressing use item button on them. The interaction makes no sounds and the chest does not show the opening or closing animation, unlike regular chests.

The boost that minecarts with chests gain from powered rails is dependent on their load. For example, from a 1 powered rail starter track, an empty minecart with chest travels 64 blocks, but a full minecart with chest travels only 16 blocks (opposed to 80 blocks for an occupied normal minecart and 8 blocks for an empty normal minecart).

Another physical property of chest minecarts is their ability to be stacked. While three chests can fit in an area three blocks tall, up to four chest minecarts can fit in the same area. Like other minecarts, an unlimited number of minecarts with chests can exist in the same block space.

Minecarts with chests are also able to interact with hoppers. Hoppers can take items out from the minecart chest if they are below the track as the minecart rolls over it or put them in if the minecart rolls under a downward facing hopper. Hoppers can also input items if they are facing into the side of the minecart.

Opening or destroying a minecart with chest angers piglins.

Tutorials/Storage minecarts

When on top of detector rails, nearby redstone comparators will give out redstone signals based on how full the minecarts with chests are.

Trading
Novice-level Shepherd villagers have a 40% chance to sell shears for 2 emeralds in Java Edition. This trade is always offered in Bedrock Edition.

shears

Usage
Shearing
Shears lose 1 durability when used to shear something.

Shears can be on a sheep to remove its coat and drop 1–3 wool of the corresponding color. The same sheep can be sheared again after it eats from a grass block to regenerate its coat.

Shearing a mooshroom drops 5 mushrooms of the corresponding color and irreversibly turns it into a normal cow.

Shearing a snow golem irreversibly removes its pumpkin, dropping it and revealing its face.

Shearing either a beehive or bee nest that is full of honey makes it drop 3 honeycombs and resets it to honey level 0. The same beehive or bee nest can be sheared again if it is able to reach full honey again. If sheared by hand without a campfire below the hive or nest all bees within will exit and all nearby bees will attack the offending player.

Dispensers can use shears in any of the above listed ways, interacting with any valid block or entity in front of the dispenser's face. This decreases the shears' durability. A dispenser shearing a beehive or bee nest will not anger bees or cause them to leave even if there is not a campfire below it.

Shearing a pumpkin turns it into a carved pumpkin, dropping 4 pumpkin seeds.

java, shearing the tip of cave vines, kelp, weeping vines, or twisting vines sets its age value to 25 and stops further growth.

Breaking blocks
Shears use 1 durability when is used to break any block, even if it breaks instantly by hand.

Shears can be used to harvest cobwebs, leaves, grass, tall grass, seagrass, tall seagrass, ferns, large ferns, dead bushes, nether sprouts, vines, glow lichen or hanging roots and obtain them in item form. They can also be used to break tripwire connected to a tripwire hook without activating it.

When shears are used to break weeping vines or twisting vines they are guaranteed to drop in item form instead of the usual 33% chance. This only applies to vines directly broken by shears and not vines that are broken due to the destruction of their supporting vines.

The following table shows information about blocks that can be broken with shears. Colors indicate what gets dropped when the block is broken:

*White: The original block.
*Blue: The block's normal drop (i.e. string, sticks, seeds, saplings, apples).
*Red: Nothing.

Mining
Copper ore and deepslate copper ore mined with a stone pickaxe or better drops 2–5 units of raw copper. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune, it can drop extra raw copper, allowing for a maximum of 20 units per ore block with Fortune III, or an average of 7.7 units of raw copper per ore block. If the ore is mined using a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch, it drops the ore block instead.

A hoe can be repaired in an anvil by adding units of the tiers' repair material (or the same hoe of that tier), with each repair material restoring 25% of the hoe's maximum durability, rounded down. It also keeps the hoe's enchantments.

Chest loot
Trading
Novice-level toolsmith villagers have a chance to sell a stone hoe for one emerald, and journeyman-level toolsmiths have a chance to sell a diamond hoe for 4 emeralds. bedrock, these are 25% chances, and java, these are 40% chances.

Villager gifts
Toolsmith villagers occasionally throw stone hoes at players with the Hero of the Village status effect.java

Usage
Harvesting
Hoes are used to harvest certain plant-based or organic blocks more quickly. Breaking one of these blocks takes 1 durability.

Breaking any other block takes 0 durability if the block breaks instantly when broken by hand, or 1 otherwise.

Tilling
Hoes are used to turn dirt, grass blocks, and dirt paths into farmland. To till, press use on a grass or dirt block while holding a hoe. This does not work on mycelium or podzol, nor does it work if there are other blocks on top of the targeted blocks, including snow layers or torches. However, mycelium and podzol can be first converted to dirt paths with a shovel, then tilled into farmland with a hoe.

Hoes can be used to convert coarse dirt into regular dirt by pressing use on the coarse dirt. Similar to tilling dirt, the space above the coarse dirt must be empty for it to be tilled.

Hoes can also be used on rooted dirt, which turns it into normal dirt, and yields a hanging roots item.

Tilling is effectively instantaneous, regardless of material, and uses 1 durability. Breaking blocks with a hoe uses 0 or 1 durability, depending on the block.

Hoes are unable to work on blocks with a plant on top, even if that plant could normally be placed on top of farmland without reverting it to dirt.

Weapon
Hoes may be used as a weapon, although they deal only 1 damage java. bedrock, hoes can do as much as a pickaxe in terms of damage. Hoes use 2 durability when used as a weapon.

java, hoes have an attack speed modifier depending on the material: wood and gold have a modifier of -3 (refill in 1s), stone has a modifier of -2 (refill in 0.5s), iron has a modifier of -1 (refill in 0.33s), and diamond and netherite have a modifier of 0 (refill in 0.25s).

Trivia
*Tilling a dirt block that has a dirt block on top of it changes it to farmland even though it cannot be used. If a hoe is used on a block horizontally adjacent to such a block, the first block reverts to dirt and the selected block is not tilled.
*When a hoe breaks, it does not display the tool breaking animation like on other tools, because tilling is not predicted client-side.
*The textures for the post 1.14 iron and stone hoes have an error, where the color for the edge of the handle is partly the same color as the edge of the top part. This isn't present in any other tool.

20w46aAlt is now used instead of ⇧ Shift to access debug mode in the world creation menu.

Issues[]

Note that any bugs relating to using game modes other than spectator are resolved as "Invalid" or "Won't Fix" due to the fact that the world type can be legitimately accessed only in spectator.

Issues relating to "Debug mode" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

Trivia[]

  • The set biome for this mode is plains by default in the Overworld.
  • The sun is displayed as if it were the beginning of the day (time 1000), but the daylight cycle is disabled.
    • Regardless, the time can still be adjusted with the use of the /time command, and the daylight cycle can be toggled with the use of the /gamerule doDaylightCycle command. The time can be also advanced from nighttime to sunrise with the use of a bed.
  • Using a map does not create an accurate map of the blocks in the world.
  • After setting the world type to Debug Mode, the Game Mode button is locked in Spectator, and a line of text appears beneath: "You can look but don't touch".
    • There is, however, nothing preventing you from changing the game mode using commands, since the cheats are enabled.
  • When the world type in the world creation screen is set to Default, clicking on the World Type button with both ⇧ Shift and Alt are held down immediately changes the world type to Debug Mode.

Referance[]

  1. Due to a bug (MC-122412 — resolved as "WON'T FIX".), the block grid was not a correct square, and in some versions the blocks in the southernmost and northernmost columns duplicate, and whether duplication occurs is related to the total number of block states.
