This article is about concrete prior to the addition of water. For the concrete block itself, see Concrete.

Tom Stone Mojang avatar

The recipe above will actually yield concrete powder - a substance that falls like sand and has the blast resistance of a damp napkin. To turn it into concrete you’ll need to add an extra ingredient - water. As soon as a concrete powder block touches water, it’ll harden immediately into full concrete. Magic! No wait, the other thing - science!

Tom Stone[1]

Concrete powder is a solid block which comes in the 16 regular dye colors. Like sand, gravel, anvils, and the dragon egg, concrete powder obeys the law of gravity.

Usage

ConcretePowderUsage

Normal sand falls through the water, while one of the pink concrete powder blocks solidifies on immediate contact with the water.

Concrete powder will fall when there is a non-solid block beneath it. If it falls on a player or mob, the player or mob will suffocate.

Creating concrete

If a concrete powder block comes into contact with water or lava,[2] it will solidify into a block of concrete. Specifically, the block has to be placed into, next to, or fall into flowing water/lava or a water/lava source block. It will not solidify in midair falling past water/lava. If it lands next to water/lava, it will solidify only after a block update. Rain or splash water bottles also have no effect on concrete powder. Concrete powder in item form will also not become concrete.

falling_block entity

  • Dynamic block entity data
      • Tags common to all entities
    •  BlockState: The falling block represented by this entity.
    •  CancelDrop: 1 or 0 (true/false). Whether the block will be cancelled from being placed when it lands on a solid block. When true, it also prevents the block from dropping as an item (regardless of what the DropItem tag is set to). However, if true and the falling block's Time tag goes to 0 before landing on a solid block, it will still destroy itself and drop itself as an item (or not, respective to what the DropItem tag is set to). CancelDrop defaults to false for summoned and naturally occurring falling blocks (except for Suspicious Blocks).
    •  DropItem: 1 or 0 (true/false) – true if the block should drop as an item when it breaks. Any block that does not have an item form with the same ID as the block does not drop even if this is set.
    •  FallHurtAmount: Multiplied by the FallDistance to calculate the amount of damage to inflict. By default this value is 2♥ for anvils, and 6♥♥♥ for pointed dripstone.
    •  FallHurtMax: The maximum hit points of damage to inflict on entities that intersect this falling block. For vanilla falling blocks, always 40♥ × 20.
    •  HurtEntities: 1 or 0 (true/false) – true if the block should hurt entities it falls on.
    •  TileEntityData: Optional. The tags of the block entity for this block.
    •  Time: The number of ticks the entity has existed. When Time goes above 600, or above 100 while the block is below Y=1 or is outside building height, the entity is deleted.

Wheat is an item primarily obtained by harvesting fully-grown wheat crops. It is used for crafting as well as to feed certain animals.

Obtaining
Natural generation
wheat

Farming
Tutorials/Crop farming

When a fully-grown wheat crop is harvested, it drops 1 wheat and 1 to 4 wheat seeds (2 per crop harvested on average). A wheat crop has a total of eight stages (0-7) from the time it is planted until it can be harvested. If a crop is harvested before it is fully grown, it just drops one seed. Wheat needs light to grow; a seed is destroyed if planted without light. Harvesting with a Fortune-enchanted tool increases the number of seeds dropped but does not increase the yield of wheat.

Crafting
{{Crafting
Hay Bale

Drops
A fox sometimes spawns holding wheat, which it always drops upon death. Alternatively, the player can drop a food item, causing the fox to drop the wheat.

Usage
Food
When wheat is held, it causes nearby cows, sheep, goats and mooshrooms to follow the player, until either the player stops holding the wheat or goes too far away from the animal, thus leading them to lose interest.

Wheat may be used to breed cows, sheep, goats, and mooshrooms by first herding two of them together and then using the wheat on them to begin "Love Mode."

Wheat can heal a horse 1 health or lower its temper by 3% when attempting to tame it. It can also decrease the time it takes for a foal to grow by 20 seconds.

Similarly, wheat can heal a llama 2 health, and it decreases the time it takes a baby llama to grow by 10 seconds.

Crafting ingredient
crafting usage

Trading
Novice-level farmer villagers have a 25%bedrock or 40%java chance to buy 20 wheat for one emerald.

Composting
Placing wheat into a composter has a 65% chance of raising the compost level by 1. A stack of wheat yields an average of 5.94 bone meal.

A bone is an item primarily obtained from skeletons and similar mobs. It can be crafted into bone meal or used to tame wild wolves.

Obtaining
Chest loot
bone

Mob loot
Skeletons, wither skeletons, skeleton horses, and strays may drop 0–2 bones upon death. The maximum drop is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-5 bones with Looting III.

bedrock, salmon, cod, pufferfish, and tropical fish have 25% chance to drop 1-2 bones upon death. The maximum drop is increased by 1 to 2 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 2-8 bones with Looting III.
Salmon (small and medium size) have 25% chance to drop 1 bone upon death, The maximum drop is increased by 1 to 2 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 2-7 bones with Looting III. The chance of dropping bones increases by 1% per looting level, so with Looting III there is up to a 28% chance of bones dropping.

Fishing
Bones can also be obtained by fishing as part of the junk category. The best chance of catching a bone is achieved without the Luck of the Sea enchantment, yielding a 1.1% chance.

Usage
Helmet
While a bone cannot be equipped in the head slot in Survival mode, equipping it using commands causes it to appear in the player's mouth.

Taming
Using a bone on a wild wolf has a 1 chance of taming it. Bones cannot tame a hostile wolf or a wolf that has already been tamed. However, bones can be used to attract the attention of the tamed ones.

Crafting ingredient
A bone can be crafted into 3 bone meal.

Super fertilizer is a powerful form of bone meal that is created using ammonia and phosphorus.

Obtaining
<center>Ammonia, Phosphorus</center>

Usage
Super fertilizer can be used in the same way as bone meal. It produces more flowers in a larger area when used on grass blocks compared to bone meal. When super fertilizer is used on a sapling, a tree is instantly grown after one use, instead of multiple uses as with bone meal. Super fertilizer matures crops with a single use.

Note that super fertilizer does not instantly grow a hanging mangrove propagule. This could be a bug.

}}

Shields may also be repaired on an anvil by using planks or another shield. Shields repaired on anvils retain their pattern.

Trading
Journeyman-level armorer villagers have 1/2 chance of selling a shield for 5 emeralds as their sixth trade.

Usage
Despite using iron in its crafting recipe, it cannot be smelted into iron nuggets.

Defense
Shields are used for blocking incoming attacks. Using or sneaking causes a player to slow to a sneaking pace, and after 5 ticks, attacks coming from in front of the player are blocked, dealing no damage. When the shield blocks an attack of 3 or stronger, it takes durability damage equal to the strength of the attack rounded up.

Most blocked projectiles that carry status effects (such as shulker bullets, flaming arrows, or tipped arrows) do not affect the blocker. Tridents & arrows can be deflected into other targets. Knockback from melee attacks and projectiles is prevented, while knockback from explosions, hoglin, and ravager attacks are significantly reduced.

The shield directionally blocks all attacks coming from within the FOV of the direction the wielder is facing, providing a full hemisphere of coverage to them. If the wielder faces straight up, they are likely to miss their blocks.<!--straight down fix: MC-92019-->

Mobs that deal continuous contact damage such as the slime, magma cube, and blaze rapidly drain the shield's durability for as long as the shielded player remains within the mob's hitbox.

Blockable attacks include:
*Melee attacks, except by a warden, axe-wielding mobs or by a sprinting player wielding an axe, however even without sprinting an axe still greatly decreases the durability
** Status effects do not carry through to the blocker.
*Normal, tipped, and spectral arrows
** Arrows other than Piercing are totally deflected and can hit other targets.
** Status effects do not carry through to the blocker.
***This can be used to damage the attacker or another mob down there.
*Flaming arrows
** Burning does not carry through to the blocker.
*Tridents
*Snowballs and eggs
*Spines from pufferfish
*Bullets from shulkers
** The levitation effect does not carry through to the blocker.
*Spit from llamas
*Fireballs, such as from blazes and fire charges
** Burning does not carry through to the blocker.
*Direct hits from ghast fireballs
** These still cause environmental damage.
*All explosions
*Explosion damage from creepers
*TNT that another player lit
*Ravager headbutts
** These still knock the blocker back by about 3 blocks.
** Blocking these strikes can stun the ravager for a moment, and it roars afterward.
*Ravager roars are blocked but still knock back the blocker.
*Bee stings are blocked, but bees continuously attack until the player stops blocking and the player is stung.
*Beam attacks from guardians or elder guardians (only reduces damage by 50%).
*Damage reflected from Thorns enchantment / guardians.

They cannot block:
*Arrows from a crossbow enchanted with Piercing
** This does not reduce the shield's durability.
*Status effects from tipped arrows or shulker bullets
** Direct projectile damage is blocked, but the effect still carries through.
*Status effects from splash/lingering potions, evokers' fangs, or breath from the ender dragon
*Beam attacks from guardians or elder guardians, or the warden's sonic boom attack
*TNT that the blocking player lit themselves
*TNT that a redstone mechanism lit
*Fall damage, including that from ender pearls
** This also includes when the player rides an entity that died due to fall damage.
*Strikes from a warden or any axe-wielding mob (e.g., vindicators, piglin brutes, zombies after disabling players shield they attack another time immediately)
** Such strikes disable being able to use shields for 5 seconds.

Applying patterns
Shields can be decorated by applying a banner.

Unlike with banners, shields cannot be repainted or washed in a cauldron. Shields have only half the resolution of banners, making patterns look slightly different. In the game files, the pattern textures can be found in a separate directory called entity/shield.

java, shields with patterns can also be obtained using the same commands as banners, except <code>banner</code> has to be replaced with <code>shield</code>.

Enchantments
A shield can receive the following enchantments, but only through an anvil:
