Wheat seeds[Java Edition only], or simply seeds[Legacy Console and Bedrock editions only], are items used in farming.

Obtaining[edit]

Grass[edit]

Wheat seeds can be obtained from breaking all variants of grass, which yields 0 to 1 seed. If harvested with a Fortune enchanted tool the drop rate from grass is increased.

Villages[edit]

Village farm plots have a 50% chance of being wheat crops.

In 1.14[upcoming] wheat seeds can be found in 71.7% of village house chests in stacks of 1–5.

In Bedrock Edition they can be found in 55.1% of village two-room house chests in stacks of 2–4.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

Farming[edit]

Harvesting fully-grown wheat yields from 0 to 3 seeds per crop harvested (about 1 57 seeds/crop harvested on average).

Usage[edit]

Crop[edit]

Different stages of crop growth.

Wheat seeds can be placed on farmland by right-clicking, where they will grow through eight stages. When left alone, wheat seeds planted on farmland will grow to become wheat which can be harvested by the player. Planted seeds require light to continue growing. Either a block light value of 8 or higher (enough to prevent darkness monsters from spawning) or a sky light level of 5 or higher (night with open sky above). If this requirement is not met the crops un-plant themselves ("pop off"). It is not possible to plant seeds if the light level is too low.

Crops will grow faster if the farmland they are planted in is hydrated. Bone meal can also be used to increase the speed of growth by causing the wheat seeds to randomly increase their stage by 1 to 7.

Breaking the final stage produces 0 to 3 wheat seeds and 1 wheat. If they are harvested early, they will drop seeds without any wheat. The more developed crops are, the more seeds they are likely to drop.

Farmland may be trampled (reverted to a dirt block) if the player or any mob (passive or hostile) falls onto the farmland from 1 block or more (i.e jumping or walking off a ledge). If trampled, the crops have the same drop rates they would normally have.

If falling sand or gravel falls on wheat or any other crop, the falling sand/gravel will be destroyed because crops are a non-solid block.

Breeding[edit]

Wheat seeds can be used to breed chickens, lead chickens around, and make baby chickens grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time.

Taming[edit]

Like other seeds, wheat seeds can be used to tame parrots.
