Extension of MediaWiki[]

The Chinese Wiki is missing a MediaWiki Extension called the “Loops”, making some of the features not available, if you can fix it, it would be a great help. Thanks Diamond Hzy980512(T|C) Diamond 15:13, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

I will get this taken care of next week when everyone is back from holiday vacation. :D -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 06:04, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks so much.--Diamond Hzy980512(T|C) Diamond 12:10, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
Have you done this?Diamond Hzy980512(T|C) Diamond 03:12, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
I have requested it, but the team is currently starting the process of upgrading to 1.18, so I think it will happen at the same time. Most likely next week. With everyone having been gone for 2 weeks over the holidays, they are playing catch up while getting started on this round of upgrades. Sorry for the delay, and thanks for your patience :D -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 03:15, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Stuff stuff stuff[]

I keep never getting around to asking you things so I'll just do it all in one go. :D

GlobalUsage extension
Did you get a chance to ask the IT team if this was possible to add?

I have asked, and was told it would be looked into... I will ask again.

SVG uploading
It seems SVG uploading has been disabled, not sure when but my only guess would be the mediawiki update. Could we get it back?

I will get it taken care of.

Anon template editing
I don't previously remember anons being able to edit templates, but recently there has been some (vandalising) edits on the templates from them. Has it always been like this or did the mediawiki update break this as well?

They've always had the ability to edit templates. (If it becomes a constant problem, simply semi protect the template).

Numbers of days needed for autoconfirmed?
I noticed that Minecraft Wiki:Autoconfirmed users and MediaWiki:Nocreate-loggedin say different amounts for the number of days needed to become autoconfirmed, so which one is correct?

We changed it, and I don't remember what we changed it to, so I will find out and fix it.

The dreaded vector theme
So I've pretty much finished that minecraft forum like theme, and have been testing it for a few days and so far it's going alright (amazingly, it even works it IE). Now I know you don't like the original (on the plus side, it doesn't push the page down much further than default vector), but I'd still like you to have a look at it and see what you think.

I realise that it is mainly up to the community if they want the theme or not, but will Curse have any problems with it? Updating is a concern, but I could always install the newer version privately before this wiki is updated, and then give you the updated skin to apply once ready.

Also, I have no idea if it's possible, but I think that the stylesheet should be able to turned off in the user preferences. I know some people obviously won't like it, so I'd like them to be able to go back to the standard vector look if they wish. The way the stylesheet is set up right now means the actual function of the option is really simple, it would just remove the <link> element that is including the minecraft.css file. However actually adding it to the preferences page I guess would require an extension, which probably doesn't already exist. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 09:10, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

We can allow users to individually disable the new theme if it is added via a gadget that defaults to active (though this means we'll need to get Extension:Gadgets installed).
While we're on the subject of asking about random tech stuff, is there any timeline for getting the wiki upgraded to 1.18, and is there any chance we could get mw:Extension:Charinsert installed? ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 09:27, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
No, no, and NO to gadgets. (Not only do I hate them, they break all the time.) We decide a single default skin and go with it. If users choose to personalize their view by utilizing their personal css that's their choice (if they don't know how, they are stuck with whatever skin is default). I will weigh in on any submitted skin the same as any other user, so just post screenshots of it, and post them for community opinion. As long as all the functionality remains easily accessible and everything is still readable (no eye bleed color palettes), I personally have no problem with reskinning this wiki, HOWEVER.... it has to be agreed on by EVERY language community, as we (Curse) wish to keep all of the Minecraft Wikis looking the same as much as possible.
I was told today that the 1.18 upgrade is being put on the timeline, but I don't know exactly when yet. I will post a site notice when I find out. Dino, give me a good reason to install Charinsert, and I will see it's taken care of. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 09:39, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Keeping in mind that I've never contributed to a non-Wikimedia wiki that uses the Gadgets extension, I've never noticed significant breakage of any sort of the extension itself (and certainly not constant breakage). Individual gadgets might break when the wiki is upgraded, if some element that they rely on gets a different ID (which doesn't happen often) or the HTML around it is completely changed, but most wikis don't update the software often enough for that to be any real concern, since it's simple enough to fix. If Curse has decided Gadgets won't be getting installed, though, there's not much I can do to change that. ;)
I've been using the skin for a few days, and quite like it myself. You don't have to worry about eye-bleeding color palettes, since otherwise the forum would have them as well, given how closely this skin is based on the forum skin. Community consensus is still necessary, though, I do understand that. =)
CharInsert wouldn't necessarily be very useful here (its main use would probably be allowing one-click insertion of commonly-used snippets of wikimarkup and templates), but on other-language versions of the wiki, it could be used to allow easier insertion of accented and non-Latin characters, for those editors who cannot input such characters from their keyboards for whatever reason (whether their computer isn't configured to allow character input for that language (which itself depends on whether their computer even supports such input modes, and whether they're tech-savvy enough to know that they have to do it and then how to go about it), or (if they use a Windows computer) they don't know about the ALT+number keypresses, etc.). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:27, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
What's the advantage of using charinsert over upgrading to the proper vector edittoolbar, which has a bunch of chars in it by default (and looks heaps nicer)? –ultradude25 (T|C) at 22:53, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm not sure if they fixed it, but we tried using the vector wikieditor, and it created a lot of problems, mostly with losing formatting while copy/pasting, among others. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 03:44, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
I haven't noticed anything like that on wikipedia. The wiki editor is going to be included by default in 1.18 (you just need to enable it), so if we are going to use it we may as well wait until then. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 05:42, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
I can't really say, since I've never really used the edittoolbar. If it turns out that does really work (and look) nicer, then it's what we should go with instead. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 23:37, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
I just want to again caution you guys about adding/having things because Wikipedia has them. Not only does Wikipedia have access to pretty much every MediaWiki developer on the planet, they also have a much more extensive support network. There is generally no reason for a small game wiki (we may be huge in traffic, but in reality the wiki itself is well under 1000 pages once you remove all the translation pages) like MCW to have all the fancy bells and whistles, it simply means more opportunities for things to break. So, if you wish to ask for additional extensions, make sure you can give me specific reasons why those extensions would benefit the MCW communities. Not to sound like a hardass, but every extension we add slows down future upgrades because every extension has to be tested on new versions of MW to make sure they still function properly. Keep in mind that the Curse IT team is like 4 people for the wiki stuff, dealing with everything from PHP configs to servers, and they are responsible for everything backend on 40+ wikis. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 01:01, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Well WikiEditor won't be an extension that needs checking in 1.18, and I don't think we'll need charinsert if we have WikiEditor enabled. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:31, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
I personally have yet to hear reports of Wikimedia-standard extensions breaking on third-party wikis, as long as the setup isn't too unusual and the versions of everything are kept within range of compatibility - for example, problems with extensions I've installed on another wiki (where I'm more-or-less the only person even approaching full-time technical staff) have all ultimately traced back to weird issues with the MediaWiki installation itself. This isn't some argument against compatibility/breakage testing, of course, and it's hardly a rigorous observation, just a bit of an anecdote. That being said, post-1.18, if an extension ships with vanilla MediaWiki, it's highly unlikely that it has any bugs that could cause breakage when it's used on non-Wikimedia wikis, and if it's an extension that's enabled on Wikimedia wikis, it's been tested far more thoroughly, rigorously, and carefully than other extensions, simply by virtue of the number of people using it. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:05, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Upload protection fail[]

For some reason, upload protection on redlink image titles doesn't work - for example, on 1, the "Unlock further protect options" checkbox is checked and the "Upload" picker box is set to "Allow all users", and changing the picker box option or unchecking the "Unlock further protect options" checkbox doesn't do anything - on clicking "Confirm" and re-visiting the protect/unprotect page, the settings are back to what they were, and no log entry appears for the protect action. This is a problem, since editors can still upload images to titles that are create-protected but not upload-protected. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 00:45, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

I understand Dino, unfortunately at this point there's not much I can do until the wiki gets upgraded to 1.18. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 03:58, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Chinese wiki plug-in issue[]

Hello, first time to speak to you. I am the administrator of Chinese Minecraft Wiki, same as Hzy980512. I believe he has talk to you about the issue of the MediaWiki Extension called the “Loops”, this is still unavailable in the Chinese wiki, and as our new pages keeps being created, this Extension starts to become quite important. So I hope you can add it as soon as possible. Thank you.
P.S. I am currently changing some links that guides to the Chinese wiki in here as they got updated. Some pages need admin permission to edit it. So if you can give me administrator permissions in English wiki it would be appreciated.

Offline copy of this wiki[]

Hello! I'm from Russia.

My friend love to play minecraft, but he have no Internet access, so I want to help him to have knowledge base. I tried to google some stable solutions of offline minecraft data, but had no success (I got some solutions, but only in English).

Then I used some tools to download ru.minecraftwiki.net and browse local copy. But I always got a problems with encoding or links between pages. Best result is set of pages named like this - Лёд with broken links and some broken images.

Then I installed Apache+MySql, MediaWiki on it and tried to get wiki pages. I exported pages from ru export page and imported to my local wiki. But following this way I can't get images (also I got php errors during importing big amount of pages).

Wikipedia have subdomen with dumps (I can't post this with external link), but minecraftwiki.net doesn't have this page.

I ask you to tell me the way to solve my task, if you know it. I read about full wiki dumps with images, but now I don't know for sure how exactly export and import all data. If I have opportunity to have this dump, I will try to google it. I have some doubts about it, because this site contains ads, so data not totally free in my understanding.

Sorry for long post and my weak English.

Unfortunately, we don't provide full dumps for offline use. The best I can offer you is the solution you are already working on, exporting the pages and importing them. I would suggest exporting only the most recent version, and importing them no more than 20 at a time, and unfortunately, there is no way to export images, you'd have to save each one and then reupload them locally. I wish I could give you a better option for offline use, but that is the best I can do. You would need to make sure you have all the same extensions added to your local wiki as we use http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Special:Version to avoid errors in display -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 16:32, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I did almost all work to solve this task, but there is one last problem and I can't google solution. What should I do to upload images with not-ASCII characters in file names? Waiting for your answer.

If images are deleted on the Dutch version of this wiki, will they be deleted here too? CrazyBliep (NL Admin) - 20:08 (UTC), 30 Januari 2012
Yes. en, nl and de with same database. -- Oliver Scholz de.Wiki Admin 20:31, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Mediawiki really needs to improve their shared database support. When you delete an image, all that happens here is that specific version of the image disappears. It doesn't leave any note about where or who deleted it. Also, when you upload over our images, it doesn't update the file history, or the current file. So you're stuck with an out of proportion image, reporting the wrong dimensions and file sizes, and the previous image is just lost, instead of archived in history.
I assume the same happens to you when we upload/delete images. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:14, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

svg and ogg images[]

Wynthyst, I want to ask why was the svg types of files no longer permitted to be uploaded anymore? There are quite a lot of svg files left in the English Wiki, but now we cannot move it to the Chinese Wiki. Is there any special reason? ---Powup333 01:17, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Spammers on hungarian wiki[]

Hi, i'm an admin of the hungarian wiki, and there has been lots of spammings around here, which is quite difficult to remove manually. How do i undo all the changes made by a(n unregistered) user? is there a way? or is there a way to restrict unregistered users to edit the hungarian wiki?

If you could anwer me on my hungarian wiki talk page (with the same username), i'd be more than grateful :).

Thanks, Icguy 18:34, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

p.s. also if you find it easier to remove those edits yourself, please go ahead, it doesnt need any lingual knowledge (after all, its spamming).

ps2: i think it would be much easier to revert the whole wiki to a previous state removing all the edits made in the last few days. just an idea.

ps3: i messaged you, because i don't think i have the user rights to do any of the above, and as far as i know you're the very boss around here, so i'm sorry to disturb you with so many things it's just that i can't do these.

Thank you, for your help, you were really fast, i'm amazed :). Icguy 19:05, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your help, and for being so helpful! Keep up with the good work! Icguy 19:39, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Please note the amount of blocks it has made (the filter) i set it up yesterday, and disabled yours today. It had more than 90 hits during the night, which i would have had to remove today manually if i hadn't set up the filter yesterday. It was all spam. If you can come up fith a filter that detects bots posting TEXTS (because that's what they do), please do, but i refuse to remove all the spam manually. However it seems to have stopped for now, fortunately. Icguy 17:03, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm sorry you feel that way, but unfortunately, stopping unregistered users from posting AT ALL is not an adequate answer. If there are additional members of the Hungarian community who would be suitable for admin rights, that can be done so you aren't having to do it by yourself, and you can always come here and ask for help on the Director's page. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 20:13, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Sorry I have overreacted the situation a bit. As a general rule of thumb. Never use "I" or "me" on a wiki. Even on a guide page. Best of luck --Moxxy 03:42, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
I thought that might be the case, I have a lot of work to do... but thanks! --5pr46u3 03:48, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
It's a good start, just always remember, that you are writing to the entire community, who in turn are going to come and edit your writing, adding and subtracting. You should always try to write from an objective point of view and as Moxxy pointed out, use of personal or first person pronouns is generally not the way to accomplish this. Also, adding personal commentary, is generally something that will fairly quickly be edited out. Do not be offended when someone else comes and makes changes, as by collaborating with many players of varied experience levels, these guides and articles evolve into high quality, well balanced articles that will influence many players. That being said... every article starts somewhere :D Keep up the good work. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 06:07, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Image changing[]

"Asterick6, I would caution you about your tone with other users as I find your attitude more disruptive than helpful. If you wish a specific image for your user gallery, it is you who needs to upload it specifically for that purpose, rather than using one that is available on public pages. All users are welcome to change images they believe are better in serving the community in regards to article usage. Also, if you have a problem with a change to the image, have the discussion on the image talk page rather than a user page. Thanks." -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 05:55, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Well, I originally uploaded it with a specific file name and description for putting on the article pages and for my own gallery as well. I just felt that Calinou shouldn't just update my imagee with one of his own cause the file description and name is for the original image I uploaded. I'd consider his own actions as disruptive, especially considering his past actions as well. - Asterick6 21:10, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Font upload?[]

Would it be possible to get some font files uploaded? I've converted most of the minecraft font into the required font types, however those filetypes obviously aren't permitted for upload.

The fonts work in all current browsers (and most mobile browsers should work, but I have no way to test that). And also in these older versions: IE5+ (potentially IE4+, but I don't have IE4), Firefox 3.6+, Firefox Mobile 1.9.1+, Chrome 4+, Android, Opera 10+, Opera Mobile 10+, Safari 3.1+ and Safari Mobile.

Here's the files:

This font would be really useful and is much easier to use than trying to use a spritesheet. Currently I would plan to use it for the grid templates and the sign template. There might be other uses for it too.

If you wish to test it yourself first, copy this into your usercss, then refresh and take a look at this sentence. :)

@font-face {

Sorry I was away from the computer, but great! :D I look forward to it. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 06:50, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
This request has been denied by our techs. I suggest you either just use the code as you have given it to me (keeping them on your host) or come up with a different plan. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 20:48, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Did they give a reason? It seems really strange that they would prefer we use a far more server intensive and less editor friendly method (sprite template).
I don't think that keeping it on my server would work, I have very limited bandwidth. And I can't just upload it to any file hosting service, since you can't actually link to remote font files without changing the hosting server's .htaccess. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 05:16, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
This is what I was told "...we don't want to use custom fonts on our sites. We have had issues with them "popping" in and out and not loading correctly which provides a bad user experience.
Also, I'm not sure of the licencing on the fonts you attached of if they are free to use for commercial purposes." Come to IRC when you have a chance. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 06:59, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

SVG render and mediawiki[]

Please help us with our mediawiki hosting. I'm making local russian minecraftwiki mirror and have problem with SVG rendering. Result from same SVG's are not as the original one. I am using rsvg render and standart mediawiki setting. What should i do to get render result like original minecraftwik.net? ROMB 23:26, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

You should go to Ultradude for stuff about rendering. He said Inkscape is recommended for SVG uploading to wikis, but it might be best to ask him how he does it. - Asterick6 06:09, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
