Restrictions to Landscape on Demo Mode page

On the Demo Mode page you removed the list of restrictions because "This is not a forum; readers don't care." I fear that without those set of rules the section will expand again and flood the page.

What I want to know is, Do the rules still apply to that section? Meaning, can I just repost the rules to the Talk Section of that page or can people just post any old landmark again? 00:42, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

The rules are still there. They're just only visible to editors, which are the only ones that care about editing rules. ultradude25 – 00:48, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
I see. Thank you for clearing that up. Oh, and just a sidenote, for me this section shows up on the front of your Talk rather than one of the archives. If that's the case then I apologize for this accidental vandalism. 00:53, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
Why would a current topic be archived? ultradude25 – 02:07, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Could you tell me how to do this, ultradude? Meeples10(T|C) 01:58, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

You can add any element to any other element using .append() and .prepend(). Then you need to listen for the change event and use the selected option as the page name.
var pages = [
    'Page 1',
    'Page 2'
$( '#p-personal > ul' ).prepend( [
        '<option style{{=}}"display:none">Favourite pages</option>',
        '<option>' + pages.join( '</option><option>' ) + '</option>',
].join() );

$( '#p-personal select' ).change( function() {
    window.location = '/wiki/' + this.value;
} );

Is there any way you could make renders of structures? And maybe a structures template to go along with them? Thanks. Lennbot (talk) 17:18, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

You mean structures like the Huge Mushrooms? That's doable, but time-consuming since it's done manually. You'd be better off asking Barracuda to make isometric screenshots of the structures. As for the template, do you mean an infobox for structure pages? What info would be needed for those? Matt – 18:28, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
Barracuda already made isometric screenshots/renders of several structures (Jungle Temple, Desert Temple, Witch Hut, Stronghold portal room). Template:Structure also exists, though it isn't used anywhere. -- Orthotopetalk 18:49, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Just wondering if the "window.mcw = {};" in the MediaWiki:Common.js is intended or if it actually should be "mcw = {};" because the "window." isn't used anymore at all. --eagle3000 (D ~ B) 17:38, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

All global variables are placed in the window object, thus manually adding a variable to the window object is how you force a global variable. If you used mcw = {}, you create an implicit global which may or may not be a global variable, depending on how it feels today. Matt – 17:43, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

About the editing toolbar

Since the migration of the site and the mediawiki gets updated, it seems that the editing toolbar seems a bit unstable. As far as I know, in the Chinese wiki the toolbar sometimes uses the new versions, sometimes the old one shows up, and sometimes no toolbar shows up at all. Can this problem be solved? P.S. the "drop file here and upload it" function does not seem to work at all? —Powup333 ZH Admin 19:42, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Have you tried clearing your cache? -- t numbermaniac c 20:32, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes, but is still occur occasionally, perhaps it is because the toolbar is not fully loaded yet. By the way, can the new toolbar be formatted like the old one? —Powup333 ZH Admin 21:42, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
The settings for both toolbars are not mutually exclusive, so if you have both enabled you'll see the old one until the new one loads and replaces it. If you want the old one, just disable the setting for the new one and make sure you have the setting for the old one still enabled. I would just hide the upload thing entirely, it lacks the ability to enter a summary or even choose a license, so people really shouldn't be using it. Matt ⎜ 01:05, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
Okay, I'm planning to modify the new one so it is like the old one while maintain some nice new features of it, do you know what is the url for the default buttons on the classic toolbar? And by the way, the implementation of your toolbar.js does not seems to work...—Powup333 ZH Admin 00:06, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
Enable the classic toolbar and find the urls there. Toolbar.js definitely works here. Matt ⎜ 00:22, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
:File:toolbarjs.jpgDoes not seem to work for me...—Powup333 ZH Admin 15:54, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
Works for me. Check your error console and preferences. If you have the new toolbar enabled it won't load the additional buttons (but if you have it enabled then you should see it there instead, so if it's not loading either then that's an entirely different issue). Matt ⎜ 23:56, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Two things

Hi, I'm just wondering whether the official Minecraft Egmont books should have their own articles? Plus, is it just me, or has the font on the wiki changed? The font I'm seeing is thin and in some cases hard and annoying to read. Phinbart (talk) 17:40, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Once they're out, they could make a great source for some information, but not sure if they warrant their own article. As for the font, it was changed for consistency since many browsers have their own idea of default font and the wiki didn't force anything. You can add your own body font to your own common.css or force the font in your browser if you're not comfortable with reading the site. Kanegasi C 17:54, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
Are the books worth just noting on the site, then? Maybe in the Minecraft article? Phinbart (talk) 18:22, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
I think they're definitely worth noting. Noting and having an article are different. I don't recall anything from Mojang that mentions them, but as long as you find some citation from them that confirms the "official", then sure, they're fine being noted. Kanegasi C 18:26, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
Well, they do all have the Mojang logo on the cover - does that make the books count as 'official'? Phinbart (talk) 18:34, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
Yeah the font was changed to try to be consistent with Arial, which is the default sans-serif font on Windows. The default font on Linux was DejaVu Sans which looks twice as wide as Arial, making everything take up way too much space. Matt ⎜ 23:38, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

    '.some {',
        'styling: here;',

var cssID = mw.util.addCSS( css.join( '\n' ) );
$( '#netbar .t-netbar-userInfo' ).before( '<span id{{=}}"toggle-css" class{{=}}"jslink">Toggle CSS</span>' );
$( '#toggle-css' ).click( function() {
    cssID.disabled = !cssID.disabled;
} );
Something like this. Matt ⎜ 15:17, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Well that did not work at all. The preview seemed fine but when I saved the page the wiki loaded as a white screen with just "ads not by this site". I had to clear browsing data to log out so it wouldn't use the .js. Do you know what went wrong? I'll move it to User:Lennbot/Broken js if I can. -- Lennbot 15:50, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Sitenotice glitching

In the german wiki, the sitenotice keeps showing up when loading pages. When finished the sitenotice disappears, resulting in jumping of the content whenever you load a page. I'm not sure but i think it started happenining when we applied the recent changes in the common.js to the german wiki's js. Is there a way to fix this issue? --eagle3000 (D ~ B) 14:43, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Yes that's how the dismissable sitenotice extension works. Clicking dismiss sets a cookie which will tell the script to hide the sitenotice once the page loads. Matt ⎜ 15:09, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Yea, but some time ago the message wasnt showing up after u clicked on dissmiss once. Now it appears from time to time and disappears when the page fully loaded. --eagle3000 (D ~ B) 16:05, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
The extension originally had its javascript inline where the sitenotice was, so it executed immediately. Matt ⎜ 23:11, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
So it's the normal behavior that the extension is doing different things in the english and german wiki or what? Because the bug IS NOT happening in the english wiki, just in the german. ...... --eagle3000 (D ~ B) 18:18, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
The English wiki does not have a sitenotice. Matt ⎜ 01:55, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Nicely done!

I bow to you! -- Wynthyst Image:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 01:54, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

I'm guessing that Wynthyst is referring to how you're converting all the the Crafting recipes to an opaque template, presumably linked somehow to that doc-less "Crafting DPL" template. While I'm sure this will rapidly squelch all the "diamonds from dirt" and suchlike vandalism, I have no idea how to follow what's going on. How is that actually working? Specifically, where are the recipes hiding? --MentalMouse42 (talk) 11:56, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
DPL is Dynamic Page List, it makes lists of things from other pages. In this case, I'm taking the crafting recipes from each page's crafting section that use a particular ingredient and listing them in the ingredient's usage section. Matt ⎜ 13:44, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
Hmm. I assume there's a cache in there someplace, but even so... you're saying any time someone edits, say, the "Wood Planks" page, DPL searches all pages (or at least the block/item pages) for recipes using wood planks, to rebuild the usage section? Also, that seems to mean only the usage side is protected from abuse. If someone vandalizes the recipe for, say, pistons, wouldn't that propagate to all its ingredients? --MentalMouse42 (talk) 15:06, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
There is an experimental cache feature you can enable, but otherwise it just checks the pages any time you load the page. This has nothing to do with protecting against vandalism, it's so the usage sections are automatic and don't keep getting out of date. Matt ⎜ 01:17, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

Input counter

When the edit summary box becomes blank, the counter doesn't seem to reflect this. It stays at the last value before it became blank. Also it doesn't seem to be letting me type over the maximum limit, I thought it says it would. (Or was I reading it wrong?) -- t numbermaniac c 08:00, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

The counter updates whenever it gets focus or something is typed while focused on it. If you're changing the input without doing either of those then it won't update. Somehow adding byteLength prevented it from typing more than the original default and I don't know why. I'll probably just remove it, it's not like we ever use multi-byte characters in English.
