Category: Redstone Mechanics[edit]

You created a new category called Redstone Mechanics. How do you intend that this category differ from the category Mechanics, which already mostly consists of blocks which interact with redstone? --Munin295 19:52, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Category:Redstone mechanics refers specifically to redstone mechanics, where Category:Mechanics includes topics ranging from Enchantment mechanics, to Opacity, to Spawning. This is simply a more specific subcategory. Now that you mention it, it'd probably be good to remove items from the general category that belong within the more specific subcategory. This is a good description of what I'm doing with the categories: Wikipedia:WP:Subcategorization. Djr013 20:14, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
I agree. It would be better to remove gameplay-mechanics like Enchantment mechanics and Spawn from the Mechanics category than create a new subcategory for redstone-mechanics which covers 95%+ of its parent category (Opacity is an important part of redstone mechanics though). Perhaps add an introductory sentence to the Mechanics category page to help prevent further confusion? (and Mechanisms might be a better descriptive category title than Mechanics, but that's a lot of work) --Munin295 20:25, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, currently, most articles in Category:Mechanics are somehow redstone-related, which I think means that other forms of game mechanics are under-represented and need to be categorized.
  • "Mechanics" seems more fitting for a super-category of the various types of game mechanics (which ideally should have their own specific sub-categories) than for a category for redstone objects and contraptions.
  • Mechanisms (like Redstone Circuits or Tutorials/Automatic farming) should be in a separate category altogether...and actually, Category:Mechanisms does exist, but yet unused.
  • "Redstone mechanics" should categorize block interactions but not redstone circuits...I'd need to remove "or systems" from the category description.
Since mechanisms heavily depend on mechanics, perhaps their categories should be sub-categories of their relevant mechanics, too.
By the way, I just spotted this: Minecraft Wiki:Projects/Categorization. There hasn't been activity in it for just over a year now, but it might be worth it to sign up and watchlist it if you work with categories a lot. I'm not afraid of the work, category tags are basically just housekeeping. djr013 (talk) 23:07, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
