@import

Does @import not work in wiki stylesheets? I'd rather have the code for the skin I'm making kept in a separate file for now, but it won't load. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 11:53, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

It should work if you use the full URL: @import url('http://www.minecraftwiki.net/index.php?title=User:Ultradude25/minecraft.css&action=raw&type=text/css'); Personally, though, I've never done much with @import; I prefer just using importStylesheet() in Javascript. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 17:23, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Nope, doesn't work, nor does the javascript. I think it has something to do with that resource loader thing. I guess I'll just have it in the same file. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 19:37, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
The Javascript, at least, should work fine; that function is part of the core MediaWiki JS... Does your error console show anything of interest? ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:19, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Now that I see how you tried importStylesheet(), I guess I should have told you that it works identically to importScript() - instead of a full URL, you just give it a pagename and it automatically loads from the correct URL (so importStylesheet('User:Ultradude25/minecraft.css'); *should* work). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:22, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Ah, that works. It's a shame @import doesn't work, using javascript to import css causes a horrible page jump. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 19:17, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
I *have* seen @import used successfully elsewhere, but as I recall, it requires some very specific treatment or something - as I said above, I've never really played with it (on wikis or elsewhere), so I don't really understand just how it works. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:04, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
I know that @import has to be at the top of the page. Not even comments can be above it. Maybe the wiki is fussy about the syntax as well. I'll try using identical syntax to that wiki and see what happens. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 20:37, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
There we go, that works. It was the brackets that it wasn't liking. Many thanks! :D
Now I can easily show off the skin that I was working on. It's based on the minecraftforum.net skin.
The forum skin was a bit difficult to fit into Vector, (I have to use Vector since there's 0.1% chance that Curse will accept a custom mediawiki skin, due to it making updating more difficult. So I'm restricted to only what I can do with a stylesheet, if I want any chance of it becoming the wiki's default style.) but I chose it because 1) The wiki will eventually use the universal Curse login like the forum does, and having similar themes makes the sites feel more networked; and 2) I could never think up an original skin myself. If someone gave me a mockup skin, I probably wouldn't have much trouble actually making it, (I've been experimenting with CSS layouts for quite a few years now, so as long as it doesn't require me to make complex images or use javascript, then I should be able to create it.) but thinking up the design myself just isn't happening, so since minecraft.net's skin is boring and ugly, I went with the forum's.
If you wish to give it a try you can put @import "/index.php?title=User:Ultradude25/minecraft.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css"; in your vector.css. (please note that the images are currently hosted externally, and aren't compressed or optimised at all, so they may take a bit longer to load than normal)
Alternatively, take a look at this preview image. (default skin for comparison) –ultradude25 (T|C) at 21:32, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Purty! A custom skin would definitely be preferable to hacking up on the Vector skin (since new versions of MediaWiki may change the Vector skin in ways that break the custom styles), but maintainability on Curse's end is definitely a valid concern.
How much testing and tweaking have you done for stuff like page histories and various special pages? How about the edit page, for that matter? ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 00:55, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
The skin only edits everything around the content area. I haven't decided what to do for the content area it self. One thing I'd like to change is the headings in Special:SpecialPages, they look very out of place, even for standard vector. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 13:05, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

CSS inquiry

Hello, Dinoguy. I'm not sure how flexible this wiki's community is with custom CSS, so I'll just suggest a small modification. In stead of having the small avatar in the upper right by the user links, I feel as if this wiki might enjoy having it changed to a pickaxe. The code is below, and would be universal if placed in Common.css.

li#pt-userpage {
	background-image: url(http://i852.photobucket.com/albums/ab82/KRCCFNF/items.png) !important;
	padding-left: 14px;

Sorry for inturupting

um, on the griefing page some one put down:

"Tools to make griefing more interesting

1. Lava buckets- Put this on wooden buildings in populated area to cause a huge mess. 2. Weapons- Griefers often run into conflict with people fighting back so at least a stone sword, etc. should be used. 3.TNT- Dig under populated area put TNT under and blow the place sky high. This works well if the server used towny. Then you can destroy plots so no one can build and/or the town is destoryed. 4. Flint and Steel- My personal favorite when griefing. This can be easily made and used to burn down forest, towns, buildings, and even cities. 5.Water Buckets- Flood towns and buildings which will create a real mess but it easy to fix. This is reusable though so you can continue your attacks. 6.Starvation- I know what your thinking but starvation is a tool since you can kill off mobs in the area that can be used for food, You can also destroy grass and crops making it so people starve more often and food is more expensive but this will only work on a survival server where bonemeal is extemely hard to obtain. 7. Wood- On a server where block protection is on you can easily destroy homes and turn them into cubes and even suffocate people to death. "

Was it written by a griefer? Thanks from raltshugger, my minecraft account name. Sorry to take your time.

No idea, I don't follow the griefing page. I do, however, definitely have reservations about advertising griefing methods - the whole thing smells a bit like beans to me. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 09:16, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Version linking template

I started making some code to put into the infobox's first version field so that'll link to the correct version history page along with an anchor, but then I thought it might be useful elsewhere so I expanded it to pick up more versions correctly, and also allow anchoring of dates for the earlier versions that often all had the same version numbers, with only a different release date to distinguish them.

Before I put this into a template and implement that into the infoboxes, you might want to take a look over and see if you can work some wizardry on it. I feel it uses too many string functions right now (although then again, I've got a large test page, and I haven't hit any limits), but I can't find any way around it.

Here's the {{static link|User:Ultradude25/The Workbench/1|2=code}} (with comments), and my {{static link|User:Ultradude25/The Workbench/2|2=test page}}. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 00:24, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Well, first, I have to ask why we're still including "A" and "B" in the Alpha and Beta anchors, since they have their own pages now (this is actually something that's bothered me for a while, but it's a pretty minor thing; still, though, now would be as good a time as any to start moving away from it).
It all looked pretty lean; if I were to make tweaks, they would probably consist of little more than adjusting whitespace and switching out the occasional ParserFunction/StringFunction for another one (if I were to approach the problem from the side, on the other hand, I can't say whether my solution would be very similar or not).
You don't have to worry too much about using too many StringFunctions; they're no more expensive than ParserFunctions in terms of template limits, which you wouldn't be in danger of hitting on your test page until you had several hundred times as many transclusions of the code as what you have now (I know from experience on Wikipedia that you can have dozens of transclusions of even something as heavy as {{Navbox}} on a page without hitting the limits).
While we're at it, should we add this to {{Version}} after we finish it up? I've been thinking about adding linking functionality there for quite a while now. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:29, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
Yes I was thinking about getting rid of those, but it means I'll need to change all the existing links, so I've been putting it off. :P
I was happy with normal version numbers working, then I added in a few error catches for what I'd think might be common mistakes when linking to some versions.
I suppose it could work, although I'm not sure. The template is all about the current version, or comparing a version to the current version (for tables), not for any version, however I guess if you don't type a version in it could autolink to the current version? I'll see what I can work out with it... –ultradude25 (T|C) at 04:59, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
It would be trivial to support both styles for a while, you know. ;)
I'm aware of that; the linking would be behind a parameter. If we go ahead with it, adding the linking itself would be as simple as having {{Version}} call whatever template gets created from this discussion. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 05:20, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

I went to add the template to {{version}} but I realised we don't have support for the pocket edition versions. I've added that now, however I'm not sure how to go about implementing the template into the version template. I wanted to have it link by default, unless nolink=something, but an if won't work when the template is split up with that switch in-between, and I really don't want to duplicate the entire switch... –ultradude25 (T|C) at 04:15, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Ugh, you're right, I can't see any nice way to do it either. I really can't wait until we get Lua as a replacement for ParserFunctions and templates, that'll make so many different things so much easier... =P ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:23, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
I think I have an idea, I'll define the output of the template into a new var, and use that var to put it into the verlink template. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 22:58, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
That could work. I confess, I still don't really know how the Var extension markup works, having not taken the time to play with it myself (and the documentation isn't all that clear, which doesn't help matters either). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 23:07, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
It's incredibly simple. You define a var {{#vardefine:varname|varcontents}} and then call on it (like a local template, really) {{#var:varname}} and it outputs varcontents. You can also use {{#vardefineecho:varname|varcontents}} to define a var and output in the same spot. It's equal to doing {{#vardefine:varname|varcontents}}{{#var:varname}}
Quick off-topic: Your change on the infobox row template causes all the fields to be wrapped in a p, which makes the template taller, but it does fix the formatting issue (if you add formatting, it replaces the p). So, instead of finding an alternate way around it, I was thinking maybe we should simply change p so it doesn't add a margin?
.infobox p { margin: 0 } –ultradude25 (T|C) at 23:58, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
Sounds simple enough. =)
Oh, I didn't notice that after making the change (but it does make sense, given how the parser behaves). If the margin is that much of an issue, there shouldn't be any problem with the CSS, since it's infobox-specific. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 00:27, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Further tweak?

Would it be possible to tweak this a bit further and apply the table cell colors before adding the link? It's a bit awkward to have to use the template twice to make it display correctly, as in {{Version|{{Version|server=1|nolink=1}}|server=1}}. -- Orthotope 04:13, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

You don't have to do that: {| class="wikitable" | {{version|1.1|server=1}} |}
But yes, now that I think about it, it should have a dedicated table mode parameter, so you can just use {{version|table=1}} (or whatever) and it always shows the current version without needing updated, like how the non-table functionality behaves (which means I shouldn't have removed the table parameter to begin with, I guess). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:25, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
...and done. Use table=1 without any other parameters to have {{Version}} output table formatting with the current stable version (all other parameters should work with it, too). You can also use the old t=1, but I'm taking the liberty of declaring this deprecated, and stating that it's only being left in for backwards compatibility. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:35, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! -- Orthotope 05:07, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
I'm confused, what was the actual problem? {{v|1.1|server=1|nolink=1}} should've worked fine in tables. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 05:50, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
And it did (and does); I suspect Orthotope was using Template:Version/testcases to get the template calls he (she?) was using, leading to his question (since, because I don't want to have to update the testcases page for every release, I just double-call {{Version}} so it's always up-to-date - see [1] for what I mean).
Looking at how the template gets used in tables, though, it looks like either it needs an explicit opt-out for table mode, or I need to change it back to being wholly reliant on a specific parameter to output in table-mode; otherwise stuff like {{Version|table=1}}, {{Version|12w07b}} breaks horribly (look at the "Latest Compatible Release" column for "Minecraft X-Ray" to see what I'm talking about). I'm leaning towards an opt-out, but I'd like your opinion since you actually use it in that way, Orthotope. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 06:09, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
I think using it as a table would be used more often than overriding the link's displayed text (what I originally used {{{1}}} for).
What I don't get though, is why you allowed table mode to be called without adding a version. The whole point of the table mode is for it to compare versions, and colour accordingly. Without that, you may as well just write the table code yourself. At the very least, version comparisonless table mode shouldn't colour the cell. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 06:38, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
It was mostly an aesthetic issue; it seemed (to me) necessary to use the template twice to display the current server version properly in a table (once to get the current version number, again to style it), and I thought it should be possible to make the code a bit more elegant. I was using this on the server wrappers page, since they'll (theoretically) be compatible with any future version of MC. Admittedly, I don't have a very good understanding of how the more complex templates work, so I can't deduce uses such as nolink directly from the code.
As for usage, if it's recognizing table=1, also having an explicit table=0 option to not add the table formatting would make sense. There are only a few cases where programs/mods are actually updated for pre-release versions, though, so it's probably not necessary; it's easy enough to just make a link instead of using the template. -- Orthotope 06:54, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Ultradude: As Orthotope said, there are cases where table mode should be invoked without specifying a version number, since there is an expectation that the current version, whatever it may be, is the appropriate version in those cases. I think probably, there isn't much reason to use {{Version}} to output a custom version number in prose now that we have {{Version link}}, unless the output text shouldn't be linked, and in that case, why even bother with a template (it's not like we perform any sort of validation of version numbers, after all)? As for the coloring being to compare versions, the way I've always understood the code is that it always compares to the current stable version, in which case it makes perfect sense, to me at least, for the default behavior in table mode to color the cell green (since the default behavior will always be the current stable version, allowing for a bit of lag between a new stable version being released and the template being updated with it).
Orthotope: table mode actually works currently by looking for any value in the "table" parameter; you could use "1", "yes", "on", or "true", or you could use counter-intuitive values like "0", "no", "off", or "false", or completely nonsensical values like "whatever", "orange", "jabberwockey", or "wallawallawallaching" XD. And my above comment to Ultradude made me realize, it would be simpler to just use {{Version link}} to create those links: {{Version link|12w08a}}. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:23, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
In what case would that be useful? It's meant to compare it to a static version number that is manually updated as the software it's relating to is updated. If you have it always use the current version it defeats the point of any kind of comparison, so you may as well just use {{version link}} in {{tc|yes}}, since it'll always say the current version, and always be green. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 18:40, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Looking at the pre-rewrite code again, and thinking about how the current code works, my understanding was a bit off: the table coloring depends on whether the given version number is the same as the latest version for whatever release line is specified (Classic, Classic Server, Android, iOS, Weekly/Snapshot, or Stable). That being said, though, the version being compared against has always been determined by the latest released version of these; there has never been a mechanism for the "control" version to be specified... So either I'm misunderstanding you, or you have the wrong idea.
While that is true, you shouldn't be so quick to dismiss similarity; the average editor adds new markup largely by copying existing markup, and if a page has multiple styles in close proximity with no obvious "correct" style, it's going to confuse a lot of people and lead to a lot of botched additions. In addition, allowing the template to behave in this way also means that if a given entry does fall out of line with the current version, documenting it entails only adding one parameter, instead of replacing two entire templates. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:31, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Yes, the table colour compares the version you put, against the current version of the version type you specify. So if you allow no version to be specified, it'll always compare the current version type you specify, against the current version type you specify. E.g. {{v|table=1}} will always compare <latest stable> to <latest stable>, {{v|table=1|weekly=1}} will always compare <latest weekly> to <latest weekly>, thus returning green 100% of the time.
If a program works with all minecraft versions, or all minecraft versions from a certain point, then you won't be able to use this template in the way you suggest anyway. Because for those versions you would put something like Alpha+, Beta 1.8+ or maybe All versions. In all these cases, this template wouldn't function, so using {{tc}} would be necessary anyway.
If {{v|table=1}} is instead used to show that it always works with the latest version, then it is being used incorrectly. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 20:16, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Soliciting Help

As i'm a newbie to wiki's i figured, what better way than to ask an expert how to get started, and thus, here i am.

I'm building up a wiki with a few of my friends mainly because there currently is no decent wiki for all things Airsoft, and frankly, most 'review' for weapons and equipment are just ... wrong. Being a avid gamer and HUGE fan of Minecraft (High Fives life size creeper next to my pc :-P ) I thought hey, whats an awesome wiki design/layout that is easy to navigate, is simple, and to the point... Minecraftwiki!

Sorry, got sidetracked, i'll get to the point. If I could bother you for a moment of your time to at the very least, point me in the direction of a decent tutorial of setting up the wiki to look similar in design to Minecraftwiki, that would be great. Of course, personal tutelage provided by you would be fantastic as well :-P Hey, I can dream cant I?

In either case, i love the setup of the main page you have here. The simple title graphic, the three column design for the various "about minecraft" "Play It" "Gameplay" and so on are fantastic and i would love to learn how to do it myself.

I have had offers to have it done for me, but I would never be able to edit it, or rebuild it if i dont learn how to do it myself.

Any and all help you could provide would be GREATLY APPRECIATED

Thanks for your time, dougdashwitz –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Dougdashwitz (Talk|Contribs) 23:34, 23 March 2012. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Hey Dougdashwitz, unfortunately you've found one of my weaker areas to ask a question of me. =) I didn't have anything to do with the design of the main page here, and, not having looked particularly closely at it, couldn't really tell you much about how it works. If you already have a reasonable grasp of HTML, CSS, and MediaWiki markup, about the best I could do for you would be to tell you to start by copying what we have here and playing with it, one piece at a time, to figure out how it works and how it all fits together; you'll learn far more by doing that then I could ever hope to explain to you. If you have questions about any specifics, though, feel free to ask me; I should be able to help with them. Sorry I couldn't be more help, and good luck! =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 23:52, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
Basic explanation: The main page is basically a giant table. While tables are bad to use for layout, they're also the easiest way to keep content aligned. Each box is a different cell in the table, each with 33% width. The larger box spans two cells, and has a width of 66%.
We have a template to make the styling for each cell, so the content of the page isn't mixed up in the HTML as much, so it's easier to edit it. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:21, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

All administrators, bureaucrats, and Curse staffers, across all language versions of the wiki, are automatically made Directors here. I became an administrator basically by showing myself to be a knowledgeable and trustworthy editor, particularly in technical areas, where the benefits to having administrator privileges are generally high. That being said, administrators are just average editors with extra tools to help them keep the wiki clean (it is for this reason that the symbol of administrators on the English Wikipedia is a mop); adminship is not, and should not be treated as, a status symbol, badge, or trophy of any kind (and if you ever meet an admin who treats it that way, I can show you an admin who's probably not good at their job). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 07:46, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

we should have an app for that

Could you suggest the making of a minecraft wiki an app that updates automatically? Something that will make it better in devices such as iPods and mobile devices. NINJAS KICK BUTT 04:44, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm not the one to talk to about that. If you're suggesting Curse make such an app, you'd have better luck telling Wynthyst, who could then pass your idea along to the proper Curse staff, and if they think it's a good idea and worth their time, they'll develop such an app. If you're suggesting Mojang make the app, their website is thataway; I have no real "inside connections" with them and can't really help. If you're suggesting I make the app, I don't have the necessary knowledge (or money to pay someone that does) to make the app, much less to get it published to the Apple Store (or any other app store). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:30, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Minecraft Wiki:Sandbox

Hiya! just messaging all other admins about my project, the Minecraft Wiki:Sandbox.
This sandbox initiative is going to try to gauge what the community wants page-wise, and where they want the wiki to go.
the plan is to use that, and see if the wiki can go that way, if our rules need improving, or if it is not viable to go in certain directions with the wiki.
So, there will be many pages that break our current rules, that will be located at "Minecraft Wiki:Sandbox/PAGENAMES".
I'm just messaging to request, unless it is blatant spam, please don't delete these pages.
There is a system to delete these pages if they are too low quality, or not active enough, and a system to tell users what has been deleted, and why. as well as informing them if a page will never be reconsidered. This section of the wiki is to see if we can push the rules, and if we should we push the rules.
I welcome other admins to help take part in this project, to see how the wiki can viably adapt to the community.
Have a good day! :) --Kizzycocoa 22:26, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

i have so many questions

  • how can i become an admin?
  • how does a powered rail work? cause they dont really work for me,
  • can i make moss stone?
  • i made a new suvival map and i spawned in the mose creepyst place! the trees were giant mushrooms, the grass was gray [WHAT WAS THAT DARK MAGIC?!?!?!?] what was that about? it was a village seed that didnt work. answers?
  • all the villages ive been to had no golems, why?
  • what does a snow golem do? ive only seen them in the wiki and in comparison, snow golems are to small.
  • why does dye only work on sheep? [notch, comon, i was really looking forward to purple chickens]
  • can i only ask for parts in mutliplayer? [my sis says yes, my brother says no] {?!?!?!?}
  • have you ever seen a spider jockey?
  • everytime i go under ground, i here erie, creepy sounds, what does that mean?

confused soul, --Cheetahfur 19:45, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

You weren't kidding, Cheetahfur. =) One at a time:
  • Unlike on some other wikis, there is no set process for requesting or gaining adminship on this wiki; the best thing to do is simply to start editing, make high-quality edits, and show that you're willing to work in an area (and actually be good at working in that area) where the admin tools would be a net benefit. In my case, I've done a certain amount of technical work here (on templates, though not nearly as much as I've done on other wikis), and after my initial request for adminship fell flat (I asked on User talk:Quatroking, though I'm going to tell you now that asking for adminship here won't get you very far), I simply started editing. After quite a while, Curse wanted some additional admins for the English wiki, and Wynthyst (who acts a bit as a community liaison between the wiki and Curse) asked me if I'd be interested. Basically, demonstrate that you're a trustworthy, capable editor who would benefit from the tools, don't make a nuisance of yourself, and be patient, and you may get to be an admin eventually. ;)
  • I don't really know; I've never played much with them myself. They should work for you if you have a Redstone Torch next to them and allow a minecart (whether you're in it or not) to get the expected boost. Other than that, the only thing I could tell you is to read the Powered Rail article.
  • You can't currently; you have to find it in generated dungeons.
  • That would be a mushroom biome. The giant mushrooms are Giant Mushrooms, and the grass is Mycelium. There should also be red-and-white cows with mushrooms on their backs, called Mooshrooms, there.
  • What version of Minecraft are you running? If you haven't upgraded to the latest version, golems may not spawn because they may not be in the version you're running.
  • Basically, it's like a guard; it throws snowballs at hostile mobs. The snowballs don't do much damage, but they do distract the mobs if you're being chased.
  • Because that's all it is programmed to work on. Personally, I'd like to be able to use it on glass, myself. =)
  • I'm not sure what you're asking here; what are the parts you're referring to?
  • Yes, though it's been quite some time. I've seen some very recent videos with spider jockeys, though.
  • Certain of those sounds are simply random ambience, I think, but some of them indicate a cave that you haven't explored yet.
I think that's everything; let me know if there's anything else you need or if I need to further explain anything. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:43, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

teehee, Cheetahfur 22:57, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
Aah, now I know what you're talking about. That's a server command, meaning in vanilla Minecraft, it can only be used in multiplayer. Furthermore, that particular command is restricted to server ops. If you want that functionality in singleplayer, you have a few options: Creative Mode allows you to build with an infinite supply of blocks, and also features fly mode (toggled by double-tapping the spacebar); Single Player Commands is a mod that allows you to use server commands in single player mode; and TooManyItems is a mod that allows you to use any block in the game, even those that aren't normally obtainable, and also features an inventory saver (note that I can't help you install mods or anything, though, since I've never done much with any of them).
The music can certainly play when you're near a monster spawner, but it usually just means you're near an unexplored cave of some sort.
Seeds usually don't generate the same world from one version of Minecraft to the next; you probably just found a seed for a different version of Minecraft from what you're running. On the other hand, the same seed on the same version of Minecraft will generate the same world every time it's used, hence your experience with getting the same world seven different times. ;)
There are undoubtedly mods that add crafting recipes for saddles and moss stone, but in vanilla Minecraft these items aren't craftable. Again, though, I can't help you out if you want to try mods.
The little brown things in deserts are Dead Bushes.
The amount of time required for saplings to grow is random and can range from a few minutes to hours; some information on how sapling growth works is on Tree#Growth and characteristics.
Cows require 20 hits from your fist to kill (they have 10 hearts of health, and each hit with your fist deals half a heart of damage).
No, currently cheese isn't in the vanilla game. In all likelihood, there's a mod that adds it, though.
You have to right-click with a bucket on a water source block to pick up water (this also works for lava).
In addition to wolves, you can tame ocelots after which they will be loyal to you. Snow Golems and Iron Golems could also be considered pets, though they don't protect you specifically, and Iron Golems will attack you if you attack them first.
It depends on how you play, ultimately: if you're a builder, the Nether is the only source of blocks such as Netherrack, Soul Sand, Nether Bricks, and Glowstone; if you're an adventurer, accessing the Nether is required for brewing (since a Brewing Stand requires a Blaze Rod to craft, and potions usually require Nether Wart for brewing); and if you're out to "complete" the game, the Nether is a very helpful step in getting to the End.
Ghasts are found in the Nether.
Silverfish can enter several different types of blocks, after which it's very difficult to tell the normal blocks from the Silverfish blocks. In addition, if you hit a silverfish, it can "call" other silverfish that are in nearby blocks to attack you.
All hostile mobs disappear in Creative mode.
Yes, cauldrons are now only useful for holding water. They were originally meant to form the basis of the potion system.
I'm not sure; the person that took that picture was using a texture pack. You would have to ask them what texture pack they were using, and what block that is, unless someone else happens to recognize it and can help you out.
I'm not trying to be rude, but in the future, if you have a question about a specific aspect of the game (e.g. a specific type of block or mob), could you read its article on here before asking me? Many of your questions are answered on the relevant article. If you can't find an answer, though, by all means go ahead and ask me anyways. Cheers! =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 03:45, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Reaching Admins to discuss incorrect bans

I was incorrectly auto-banned by the abuse filter yesterday, and all the messages kept encouraging me to contact admins about it.

When I tried to add a topic to an admin's talk page, the wiki helpfully reminded me of how banned I was and that I should contact an admin about that.

It seems like banned people should have the permission to talk to admins, since only incorrectly banned people would ever risk posting things on an admin's talk page. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Redson (Talk|Contribs) 13:54, 18 April 2012‎. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Right, if you're banned, you should obviously ignore my advice to leave messages on my or others' talk page on-wiki since you can't (and I agree, banned editors being unable to edit admins' talk pages is something that has bugged me for a very long time, but there's not much I can do about it). I wasn't thinking about the fact you'd been banned when I wrote that; if it happens again, you should go ahead and email an admin for help. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 16:44, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Incrementing numbers?

I want to use padright in the navbox template so that you don't have to have the code for a group 20 times. Now from your repeat template this is simple enough to work out initially, and you could probably stick a switch in to work out how many times you want to repeat it, however I need to have a way to increment the number so you get group1 list1, group2 list2, etc.

Or would this idea be completely flawed due to it including the user input of each group as part of the padding? –ultradude25 (T|C) at 15:33, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

I don't think it would work very well, though I'm not sure exactly what problems you might face trying to do so; I've never tried using repeat techniques on parameter names, so I'm not sure just how you would work with them. There are also potential problems with the repeat limit; #padleft seems to have a hard limit on the length of the output string of no more than 500 characters (anything more is dropped), and the older #replace-based version has a similar limit of 1000 characters (the original #expr-based version has two limits, as I recall, the first is 14 replaces (due to how many decimal places MediaWiki tracks or something), and the second is a limit on the length of the input string, to 30 characters, IIRC).
Wikipedia's version doesn't *look* like it'd have any such similar limits, but I don't really understand how it works (I've got the gist of it, I think, but I'm lost on the details) and haven't tried playing with it any. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:34, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
Well I worked out the incrementing number, that was actually really easy. {{#vardefine:i|{{#expr: {{#var:i}} + 1 }} }}{{#var:i}}
If you transclude the template normally, it won't actually increment, you actually have to define the first parameter (even though it isn't actually used in the template).
For example {{User:Ultradude25/The Workbench/2|}} {{User:Ultradude25/The Workbench/2|}} {{User:Ultradude25/The Workbench/2|}} {{User:Ultradude25/The Workbench/2|}} would give you 1 2 3 4.
However, I didn't have any luck getting it to work with the navbox. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 11:57, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
Aah, now see, I never would have thought to use #var & co.; I still haven't done nearly enough with them to really understand how they work and what might be possible with them.
In the long-term, we'll have a solution for this after we finally get Lua as a replacement for the current template system. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 17:29, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

You shouldn't use Google Translate to translate wiki articles for a translation project. I've often had this when someone undoes an edit just before I do, the edit looks like it goes through but since it is the same as the other person's undo, it doesn't show up in history (just like null edits). –ultradude25 (T|C) at 09:26, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Worried about the version history section

Hello there, I was browsing the version history, as I do frequently, and I noticed there was nothing in the classic section. There used to be alot of history there, and it seems someone by the user name dougrs22. I was wondering if you could bring back the section he deleted and possibly tell him not to do that in the future? Thanks for your help, Kit.

Edit: Looking at the page now, it seems one of the admins changed it back, thank you very much. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Kitbane (Talk|Contribs) 18:25, 16 May 2012. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

benedict03 blocked

Hoping this is the right place. My son was blocked today for behaviour he thought was OK. It looks like he ignored some warnings. I have told him he needs to pay attention to whatever the moderators say. He was blocked for griefing. He was actually breaking a brick in a house to test if it was "protected" and was reported before he put it back. He was not destroying the house. This is something he has been taught by a friend as a way to find out whether property is available or not. He and his sister have lost houses themselves they have not protected in time by others doing the same thing so thought it was how things were done. I have tried to find rules around this but can't see any. I would be happy to let him know what he should and shouldn't do but he certainly wasn't intending to be destructive. Just trying to see if the property was open or not. Are you able to reinstate him and also clarify what is allowed? It seems his friend Horsefink75 was also banned doing the same thing today. He builds beautiful houses and I know was certainly not intending to be inappropriate. Many thanks!

Hello Tables, I have seen what you're talking about. However, we don't have any actual information on what these textures were actually supposed to be for, so an article would be complete overkill. Instead, this should be given a section on Unimplemented features. One final note, I don't think the second texture is for a table; I think it's far more likely that it was supposed to be the front of the chair seat and legs. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:18, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Grid finished (finally)

So I actually finished rewriting the grid template. I managed to work out how to add animations and everything seems to be working.

There's only a few problems that I've found that I don't know how to solve.

  1. Having a space after a name will count that as part of the filename (File:Grid Dirt .png), which obviously won't show the intended image. This didn't happen on the old template, but I can't see how it dealt with the problem.
  2. I couldn't find a way to catch missing images (and display :File:Grid Unknown.png instead) without hitting a limit on Crafting. #ifexist is limited to 100, and crafting used 909 (I think I might have had the #ifexist running twice, but even without that it would still be way over the limit). I tried a transcluding trick, but it hit a similar limit, and caused every image to show up on the page's template list. Is there a way to find how many of a resource we've used? If then, we could catch missing images until we get close to the limit, then allow them to display the wiki's normal missing image text (if they are missing).
  3. I had to move the display code to a separate template to make the animations work, since having the grid template call the animation template, which then called the grid template again for each frame caused the wiki to complain about a template loop. It would only ever loop once, so if we could trick the wiki into letting one loop through then we would only need to run the animation parser when there actually is an animation, thus allowing us to have 1 less template when there's no animations. (And it would allow Grid to be the display template, which I think makes more sense, instead of it being an animation parser that calls a display template.)

Other than that minor stuff, I think it's ready to deploy. As usual, I'd want someone (you :D) to look over it first to see if there's any glaring problems, or if they've got any better ways to do things.
You'll need the all the u-grid css from User:Ultradude25/vector.css for everything to display, and if you want to see the animations you'll need the script at the bottom of User:Ultradude25/vector.js. ultradude25 (T|C) at 14:31, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw your work on User:Ultradude25/Projects/Grid/Cell. =)
  1. I'll have a look, but first I'm probably going to have to add more whitespace in the code so I can read it more easily. If I can't figure out a proper solution, though, I know of a hack to get rid of the space.
  2. Have you experimented with setting Grid Unknown.png as the background image for one of the divs and displaying the proper image (or an empty cell image) over top of it? For that matter, this could be refined so that Grid Unknown.png is only added as the background if a block or item is being displayed in the cell. From there, we can use CSS to hide the redlink that appears if an image isn't uploaded (at least, as long as the CSS is added in a stylesheet; inline CSS doesn't work very well with links).
  3. Unfortunately not from within wikimarkup, though that sounds like a very useful feature. I don't think it'd be very feasible until we get Lua for template scripting, but that's going to be a few months down the road even for Wikimedia wikis, and it'd also require the scripts having access to a global page state (which will be needed anyways for variables in many situations).
  4. The best thing would be to have only one template (Grid/Cell, or whatever we end up calling it), and let the Javascript handle all of the animation. There shouldn't be any need to recreate the entire cell for each frame of the animation. I think the best way would be to have one div for each frame, absolutely aligned to be stacked so that it defaults to showing the first block/item, and then using Javascript to manipulate the z-index if the cell needs to be animated, but I have no idea what sort of browser bugs there are there (I know IE 6 has issues with z-index, but I don't know if Curse is worried about supporting it any more).
I'll have a look in a minute, I think, but I can't promise very much after today; it's sounding like I might have a lot of stuff happening IRL, probably through the end of the month and then some. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:56, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
  1. It's a shame there's no way to use regular expressions, or at least expose trim().
  2. Hmm, I hadn't thought about doing it as a background. That should be really simple.
  3. Looks like I'm going to have to learn lua... D:
  4. The reason I did it this way is so you don't have to have the 9 lines of code that displays each image copied for each frame (that would be a right nuisance to update).
That's alright, these issues aren't show stoppers, so there's no rush to fix them. ultradude25 (T|C) at 21:17, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
  1. That's coming with Lua (I don't know about regexes per se, but we'll definitely have a lot more power in manipulating strings). ;)
  2. Numbering placeholder =D
  3. From what I understand, Lua is actually supposed to be fairly simple and straightforward as a scripting language. I also don't think we'd be getting it for at least another year, even if it landed in MediaWiki 1.21 (which should be released in August or September, at the rate recent versions have been getting released).
  4. Hmm... If I understand correctly, currently Cell just displays a single static cell, and to animate, the grid template (be it Crafting Table, Furnace, or Brewing Stand) just calls several Grid templates and wraps the bunch in a single span with an "animate" class, right? I can't get the animation to work myself, even though I've copied the necessary JS and it appears to be working properly according to Chrome's error console... I also don't understand what you're getting at by ending up with having to copy 9 lines of code per frame with my version; could you elaborate?
Lastly, it would help if I could get a rundown of exactly what each parameter is for in Grid; think you could whip up some documentation real quick? =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 21:38, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
You said to just let the javascript handle the animation, so at the bear minimum the template will need to output each image and number right? So unless you're planning on using loops (crafting isn't going to like that), you'd need the (was) 9 lines of code that does that copied for each frame that the animation could have.
The reason the animation doesn't work is you missed the CSS that hides the in-active cells.
Basic doc:
  • {{{1}}} what image to use
  • {{{2}}} the number to display
  • {{{output}}} adds the output class to the grid which makes it 48x48px
  • {{{class}}} adds an additional class (used to make the first frame of the animation start with the active class, so it displays for people with JS off)
  • {{{align}}} sets the vertical-alignment
  • {{{mod}}} if set will add _({{{mod}}}) to the end of all image names and /Mods/{{{mod}}}/ in front of every link
  • {{{title}}} if set will remove any links and set title="{{{title}}}"
  • {{{link}}} if set to none will remove all links, otherwise will replace the automatic link based on the image name
  • {{{default}}} sets an image which is always displayed behind {{{1}}}'s image (used for the brewing stand) ultradude25 (T|C) at 22:01, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
Aah, now I see. Yes, the basic idea is to have Cell output every image and number. As you said, loops are out of the question for this, but we can fake them by putting the output/display code into a Cell/frame template or similar, and then we can just do something like {{ #if: another-frame | {{Cell/frame|frame info}} }} for each frame, with the default frame getting the "active" class.
Got the extra CSS, now the animations work. Thanks for pointing it out. =D
Cool, I'll have another look in a bit and see what other improvements/streamlining I might be able to do now that I know exactly what everything does. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:26, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
So that is basically how it already is then? Except it wouldn't output the frame and it wouldn't need to pass along as many variables. Sounds like a good idea anyway, especially having less variables to pass on.
One obviously stupid thing I noticed while writing the doc is I have {{{output}}}, which add a class and {{{customclass}}}, which adds a class... I've fixed that now and made a few tweaks to names.
I'm going to see if I can get that ? image idea to work now. ultradude25 (T|C) at 22:58, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, we don't block IP ranges without heavy discussion, especially not with a /18 cidr. You just blocked everything between 216.66.128.0 and 216.66.191.255, that's about 16000 addresses. I unblocked it, don't do it again ;) --Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 19:36, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Some people just need to be blocked --Ichi (Check out my page for upcoming events on my server) 19:57, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
Hey Quatroking, yes, I am aware that blocking a /18 range results in thousands of IPs being prevented from editing. Unfortunately, it seems that the ISP that owns this range assigns a new IP to its customers on a regular basis (more than once a day), meaning the vandal in question can trivially get around single-IP blocks, and indeed has vandalized from at least a dozen IPs from all over in this range. If their vandalism wasn't so disruptive, I wouldn't have blocked the range, but inserting huge blocks of gibberish and replacing the content of pages is severe enough in my estimation to justify such a rangeblock in the absence of evidence for undue collateral damage (innocent editors getting caught in this block). This is not the first time I blocked this range, but every time, the vandal simply outwaits the block expiry and starts up again. This is also not the first time I've been involved in rangeblocking someone for vandalism, so I understand the potential issues surrounding it.
I'm not going to wheel war over this block, though; if you'd rather spend undue amounts of time reverting vandalism and blocking individual IPs while this vandal continues to simply IP-hop every couple of hours, be my guest. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:04, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Submit an Texture Pack

Hey! I'm new on the wiki (but not new on minecraft though), and wanted to submit my 32x32 Texture pack, which is finished recently with support of the latest update. I just wanted to know (since i never used a wiki before), can i just edit the texture pack listing page and make a line for my texture pack, or do i have to send/give the pack to you, and you will add the pack to the list?

Thank you Victor Vickal89 06:51, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello Victor, and welcome to the wiki!
You can feel free to add a line about your texture pack to the appropriate page yourself; I don't do much with those pages, but I din't think there's any sort of vetting process for adding new texture packs. I can say it would probably help all around, though, if you've also posted a thread for your texture pack on the forum.
Again, welcome to the wiki, and I hope you stick around for a while! If you need any help, please feel free to ask! =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 08:19, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi, you should be able to change your email by logging in and visiting Special:Preferences. However, I've never played around with changing the email on an account when the email is unverified, so if it doesn't let you or something, all I can do is to tell you to ask Wynthyst to forward your report to the Curse techs, who can hopefully reset your email for you. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:21, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't know if there are any remaining copies of the Minecraft.jar file from that particular version anywhere in the world, actually. No. It's my understanding that most of the sounds in Minecraft are web resources that are just cached on your machine, so tools like MCNostalgia won't get you old sounds. Creepy things in 1.3.1

Hello, I would like to tell you this odd story of mine and my cousins adventures in the new 1.3.1. I didn't know if it could be a bug or something.

It all started when me and my cousin wanted to play the new update on august 1st. I downloaded the latest server file. I opened it and it made all the server files and generated a new 1.3.1 world. My cousin couldn't join me on my server because I had issues with hamachi, so in the end we went to his server. I gave him the folder with ALL the files I had and he launched the server from the exact same folder. We started to explore the world, tried to find a good spot to settle down. Half of the minecraft day pasted and I spotted a nice hill, on which we could settle down. We stated to gather wood and started to make the house as well. Night came quickly upon us. We continued to build the house so we could have a bit more of defense from the monsters. While I was building I spotted something really weird in the distance... It looked like a city, that a real player would make. The thing that fell in my eyes the most were a gold tower. Asked my cousin if could see it but he said he couldn't, he plays on normal render distance unlike me. We decided to go check it out in the morning, when the monsters are gone, the forest is quite dense. Day came and we went there. When we arrived it was really a "city" build by a real player. As we were exploring I spotted a banner on a building... It said "t3c". It was the famous parkour map. We didn't know how it could have gotten here. I generated a completely new world with the server! I never had the t3c map on my pc, I gave only see let's plays of it! As we we were leaving I noticed that a part of the map is cut off, I don't know how much exactly. The whole map was one block above see level as well. We decided not to go there anymore because it has things that we shouldn't have right now, like gold blocks, golden apples etc. Later on, as I was continuing to make my house, my cousin went to look for chickens, because we wanted to make a book and quill. At some point he made my write down my coordinates, so we could get back, and made me teleport to him. He found an entire line of chunks that were water, splitting the whole land in half! He turned right to continue his search for chickens while I went left to explore the split. A few blocks away the split cut an entire side of a mountain! We haven't found anything else weird since then... I am adding a link to a rar of the ENTIRE server. We live in (x43,y73,z153) and close to that you will find the t3c thing. Also in (x-25,y75,z510) you will find the water split. http://www.mediafire.com/?94n4y82yu57fls6

I don't know if you believe me or not, because I could have edited the world. But I am telling you generated like that by it self!–Preceding unsigned comment was added by Aaartis2 (Talk|Contribs) 09:51, 2 August 2012‎ (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Thanks for the story, Aaartis2, but I'm really not sure why you told me; there's not much I can do about it. ;)
If you're just looking for possibilities on what happened, Minecraft will often "reuse" old chunks from deleted worlds when generating new worlds. This is a bug, and if it is the explanation, it probably would have happened on your machine, before you sent the world to your friend (though on the other hand, you said that you've never had the t3c map on your machine, so Minecraft might have grabbed deleted chunks from your friend's machine after he started up the server with the map you generated). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 17:42, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

Tor IPs

Is there a list of known Tor IPs that we can block? There should be no reason for someone to legitimately edit from a tor address (same as proxies, which are already blocked). ultradude25 (T|C) at 09:19, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

There's actually a MediaWiki extension that the Wikimedia projects use for blocking Tor IPs, but it comes with some caveats, as listed on that page and Bugzilla (also, remind me later to add a "bugzilla:" IW prefix...). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 13:32, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Banned for creating an account

Hi. My username is SteppyW.

The other afternoon, I attempted to create a curse/minecraft wiki/forums account, from my school. Minecraft is quite popular there, and it appears that, unknown to me, someone at my school has managed to get themselves IP banned.

When I created my account, everything followed as per normal, except that when went to verify my account, instead of the verification link working, it said this.

Sorry, you don't have permission for that! You have been banned from this forum. To appeal a forum ban please email banappeal@minecraftforum.net, including your username and any information you feel may be relevant to your ban

I then left school, and traveled home, and tried to log in. My account was still banned.

I then recreated my account at home. (It somehow wasn't verified, so it didn't say i was already a member.

However, even with recreating the account, i am still banned

Please help.

Hi. I need some help

I understand that you might be the wrong person to ask but I don't really understand my way around Minecraft. I have a twelve year old brother (ooooo33333) that is really into this game. I understand there is nothing you can do about him being blocked from a server, but he had alot of diamonds that were given to him both from the creator of the server, and that he purchased. They have both been blocked. They were blocked because apparently a "griefer" killed him to take his possessions. He tried to get them back, the co-creator then locked him and his friend Frost3940 in "prison" because they wouldn't tell him how to get diamonds even though both of them had told the co-creator how to get these diamonds repeatedly. As far as my brother and I know the creator of this server is perfectly fine with them both being in his server. I was wondering if there was any way I could maybe report this co-creator or maybe talk to the creator about getting them unbanned or at least their possessions. It would be highly appreciated. The server name is mc.elementcraft.net Thank you so very much for your time and I hope to hear back from you. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 75.81.152.229 (Talk) 04:16, 26 August 2012‎ (UTC). IKJames and other things.

Hey Dinoguy1000, I have a question. Remember when you told me that IKJames was inactive? I have a question about that, as said here,

"IKJames is inactive. IKJames has not edited since June 2011, so he will probably not receive any comments left here. Please keep this in mind before leaving a comment."

I also notced this message to FMR Administrator Miclee,

"I have removed your Administrator privileges due to no contributions to the wiki being made from you in your period as an administrator. The logs show that you have performed 2 actions between September 2011 and February 2012, you have also contributed only 1 change during the same period. --Citricsquid 05:54, 21 February 2012 (UTC)"

(Reasonably specking) Should we do the same with IKJames, Or should we wait? Just curious. Also, I would like your thought about this; Do you think that all Wiki Admids here should have "Wiki Administrator", "Administrator" Or anything that can spec that they are Admids in there signature, or User Page-(Like yours) without having to go to the Directors page, or the Admin noticeboard? I don't know. Just a thought. And last, How do I change my signature? (I like your signature). Reply back when you can. Spencer10APSC 19:03, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

I really can't say whether it's better to remove the admin bit from an inactive admin account; this is something that is frequently debated on Wikipedia, for instance, so it's far from a settled issue overall. My only opinion on the matter is that if a formerly inactive editor starts editing again, and they had their admin bit removed because of their inactivity, they should be able to get it right back just by asking, unless there's a very good reason not to. As for the removal itself, I can say that only bureaucrats are actually able to remove (or grant) the admin bit, so even if I had a strong opinion on the matter, there wouldn't be anything I could do about it.
I don't think requiring such identification is necessary, and in most cases it also isn't really advisable: the position of administrator is purely a janitorial one, and other than the extra tools and responsibility, administrators are generally expected to behave as though they were just another editor (since that's arguably all they are). Adminship is not meant to be a trophy or status symbol, but if you announce it every time you leave a comment on a talk page (as you would if you had some sort of "administrator" tag in your signature), it will invariably lead to someone viewing it as such. I don't know if you pay any attention to me, but if you do, you'll notice that I almost never mention that I actually am an administrator; it usually doesn't have any relevance to the work I'm doing and bringing it up in most discussions is equivalent to an appeal to authority, which is not the way to "win" a discussion.
You can customize your signature by visiting your preferences and changing the text in the "New signature" textbox. Note that if you do, you also have to check the "Treat signature as wikitext (without an automatic link)" checkbox immediately below it, since otherwise MediaWiki will treat the textbox's contents as your username.
When customizing, you can use HTML and wikitext, but keep in mind that there's a hard 255-character length limit, and using templates or images in your signature is generally discouraged. It's also considered good etiquette to make sure there's a link to your user or talk page in your signature. If you need any more help, please ask! ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:56, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Ah, Interesting. That makes since. By the way, I thought that Administrators had more authority than bureaucrats, Even tho I did not know for sure what they were. Also, (Relay hope you don't mind me asking). But I have one more question, What is minimal requirement age for a Bureaucrat/Administrator? (I'm not asking your age) Not just here, But the average site. (Note, I do not want to be a Admind Any time soon. Unless of course, You, or another Bureau/Admind asks me to be one (Or however it works)). Just find it interesting and nice that some admids like Kizzycocoa And IKJames are under 21. I just think that's... Odd, But in a good way. Thanks for telling me these nice facts. Spencer10APSC 18:52, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
I wouldn't say that either role has any intrinsic authority, necessarily. Administrators have tools that help keep the wiki clean, e.g. being able to delete or protect pages and block users, whereas bureaucrats only have the ability to grant and revoke admin privileges (though on all the wikis I've seen, bureaucrats have always also had the admin bit).
Age requirement is another interesting issue, and again, one without any easy answers. On one hand, it is trivial to demonstrate that younger people tend to be more immature than older people, but on the other hand, a person's maturity can vary vastly from person to person. So really, the best way to handle it is to ignore a person's age and instead look at their contributions and interactions with other people. As for me, I have no qualms about giving out my age; I just turned 24 earlier this month. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:17, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Use <span style="color:color">text</span>. color can be given as HTML color names, like "red", "black", or "green", X11 colors (basically a whole bunch of extra color names), or hex triplets (e.g. "#080", for the orange in my signature). There are hundreds of web sites that allow you to visually choose colors and then give you the appropriate code to use that color in a web page, though I don't regularly use any such site, so I can't really offer any recommendation. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:36, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Well, I don't see any point in being short with a person if they seem like they're earnest, rather than just around to cause trouble. In addition, I enjoy helping people when they have questions or need help with something wiki-related. ;)
You shouldn't say you're not that good of an editor just based on that... If you're not confident in making one type of edit, you can always dial that back and try doing something else around the wiki. If you do want to quit editing here, though, you shouldn't let me stop you, though I would encourage you to keep in mind that this isn't the only wiki out there; not only are there wikis for basically anything you might be interested in, but there are also websites that allow you to create your own wiki (I suppose the largest would be Wikia, but it's far from the only one), if you'd like a less frenetic environment to experiment with the tools and with editing in general in. ;) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 10:41, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Ban appeal

On about 8:09, September 8th 2012, the abuse filter automatically blocked my account User:TyroTech for posting what it calls a "large spam page" after saving my Userpage. Template:Fullurl

I think equals signs still need to be escaped for some URLs, such as page diffs and many of the special pages. For example, try encoding http://www.minecraftwiki.net/index.php?title=Template:Fullurl/doc&curid=8864&diff=383405&oldid=144121. Using {{Fullurl|Template:Fullurl/doc|curid=8864&diff=383405&oldid=144121}} produces https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Template:Fullurl/doc, losing the diff parameters. Applying the same treatment to diff= as you did to action= should make that work. Special pages with parameters aren't linked to very often, and don't all have a paremeter in common, so escaping their equals signs may be necessary. -- Orthotope 07:44, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes, in such cases, you still need to escape the equals signs; I only added a parameter for the case of the extra URL parameters starting with the "action" parameter, which should be the most common case by a reasonable margin. I considered adding parameters for the other URL parameters, but there are quite a few of them, and they're poorly-documented at best IIRC (not to mention that they may be changed or added to at any time, and at least a few of them are only valid in certain contexts...). Personally, I've never understood the point of using the template over the built-in {{fullurl:}} function anyways, since it does not save any typing whatsoever, and I certainly have no intention of ever using the template myself. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 08:47, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Suggestion for Fixing Problems that Numerous People Are Having

I have not been playing minecraft for very long, but I have come to enjoy the game with one exception, and that is the constant crashing. Through research and much time spent updating and modifying Minecraft, Java, my graphics drivers, etc., I have determined that the problem lies with the fact that Minecraft is simply not compatible with AMD Radeon drivers. I have done research online and there are numerous people in the same situation that I am. I have a Sony VAIO S Series laptop with Windows 7, 2.8 GHz AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics card with 1GB VRAM, 8GB RAM, and a 1080p HD display with 1920x1080 resolution. If it could be worked out so that there is a patch for Minecraft that will enable compatibility with these drivers, lots of people, including myself would be much happier with the Minecraft experience. As it is, I can run AOE 3 with full video capabilities but Minecraft crashes every 2-3 minutes on average. If this is a possibility I would appreciate it being developed. Thanks.

Purple Default Block:

I just noted that so people do not spam the talk section saying "This isn't a block" or "It's a glitch, not a block" because we know that already. and it does not matter to me if it gets merged or not, like i care. I just created the page because it is a cool glitch. Trigger hurt 21:48, 5 October 2012 (UTC) Whoops, forgot to sign my post.

Well, it's not a glitch per se, but rather one built-in method the game uses to handle glitches. ;) That aside, a note is fine as long as it's on the talk page and it makes clear that discussion related to the merge is still okay. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:38, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Generic phone image

Since you are an admin, can you revert :File:Phone.svg to the image I uploaded and exercise your administrative power to protect the page from being reverted by immature kids like 007a83? I've already explained on the file talk page why the new image should be used, but he's just too stubborn and immature to listen. --M0rphzone(talk) 22:49, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

You have already asked Ultradude about this; at this point, I think what is needed is wider community input. I would recommend starting a discussion on the community portal and seeing which image the community prefers. In the meantime, I've added the image to my watchlist; if it starts getting reverted again I'll fully protect it - regardless of which version it is - until the discussion is resolved. Lastly, unless I'm mistaken, the licensing on the image refers specifically to the originally-uploaded iPhone lookalike version; is it correct for your version as well (in particular, did you make your version yourself (which allows you to license it however you like), or did you copy it from another site, or derive it from an image on another site (both of which require you to maintain the original licensing, and in both cases you need to link back to the source image), etc.)? ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 01:20, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
I originally asked him about it around 3 weeks ago, but he hasn't responded to any of my inquiries at all. As for the licensing, it's from Wikipedia as linked in the file description. That image is used in Wikipedia for generic smartphone articles, so I thought it should be a more appropriate image to use. I really don't see how it looks like an iPhone, since all smartphones pretty much look like that nowadays. And besides, that's not the point; I didn't upload it so we could use an iPhone-like image. --M0rphzone(talk) 06:07, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
As I said in my first reply, at this point you need to start a discussion with the wider community. I have no opinion on which image might be more appropriate for the wiki, though personally I prefer Ultradude's image since it is more realistically colored and doesn't have that monstrous border; in addition, it's PD (on that note, as long as that is the image which is live, the licensing needs to be adjusted appropriately) and I also notice that the Wikipedia image isn't actually used on any page - globally across all of Wikimedia - save a single project page on Meta. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 10:26, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
Man I can't believe I have to do something like this over some petty edit warring. But alright then, I'll do it anyway, even though it's a hassle trying to get community response from people who don't even participate. --M0rphzone(talk) 06:45, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
I find it ironic that you would refer to it as petty when you're one of the involved parties. Nevertheless, this is a standard dispute resolution step on many wikis large enough to need to worry about dispute resolution, so it will help you in the long run to get used to the idea. ;) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 07:33, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Spencer, welcome back. =)
As Hower said, I'm not on break or anything; I've just been out all day (and I've been having internet connection issues which were especially bad today, so I wasn't able to do much before I left). ;)
You can archive your talk page simply by creating a subpage in your user talkspace and copying the discussions you want archived from your talk page to the subpage. There's a few different names you can use for it; I'm partial to "Archive 1" (and so, my talk page archive starts with User talk:Dinoguy1000/Archive 1); then, when you decide the first archive page is full enough, you can just increment the number to end up with "Archive 2", and so forth. You should also link from your talk page to the archive, and it's usually a good idea to somehow note on the archive that it *is* an archive and that people should leave messages for you on your talk page instead of editing the archive.
Hower: the vandalism was possible because {{!}} wasn't protected; I've just done so.

I even tried editing the page while logged out and I could not (because of above reason). Can you please explain this? -- Hower64 04:16, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
No, I really can't. The most I can offer is that cascading protection has always interacted a bit weirdly with the cache, meaning it should generally be used as a backup protection, instead of relying directly on it. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:20, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Oh, that sounds like a major bug. Thanks anyway. -- Hower64 04:24, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Indeed it is; to be sure, it hasn't gone unnoticed on the English Wikipedia. =/ ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:53, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Re: Reverting

Oh nothing, I just didn't properly import Ultradude's {{static link|User:Ultradude25/editableRollback.js|2=editableRollback}} script to the right page. I imported the script to {{static link|User:Hower64/editableRollback.js}} instead of my vector.js, so it didn't work. Complete fail on my part, sorry! -- Hower64 03:58, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Merging pages

What's the proper procedure for merging two pages? For example, Cheats and Commands are basically the same, so should I make sure all the content is on one page, then do a history merge (even though that would make the page diffs horribly confused)? For another example, Score has much less content than Experience, so would it make more sense to just delete it after combining the content? -- Orthotope 20:03, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Generally, history merges should only be used when correcting copy-paste page moves: as you pointed out, they make the page history horribly confusing in most other cases, and they're next to impossible to revert - someone has to go through the entire history up to the merge, diff-by-diff, and determine which of the original pages the diff belonged to.
On the other side of the equation, though, the Creative Commons license used for the content of this wiki requires attribution for all content be maintained, regardless of how much (or how little) history that content has, so deleting a page after merging its content into another page is a definite no-go. Instead, the merged page should be redirected to the merge target, and the merge action and merged page should be noted in the edit summary on the merge target when the merge is performed. Some editors also like to leave a note on the merge target's talk page specifying that a merge happened and the merged page that the content came from; this is probably a good idea to always do, but I could never get into the habit myself.
Back to history merging, on the Yu-Gi-Oh! wiki, there have been cases where I've performed a history merge where one or both pages had very few revisions (typically less than 5 or so) and very similar content, where there was a high probability that some or all of the content had previously been copied from one page to the other. Most cases here should be far more clear-cut on whether a history merge is warranted, but you may come across one or two cases that are much less clear; for these, you can rely on your own judgment, or if you're not sure, ask me or another admin.

Caption entry

Dinoguy, can you add an entry to {{entity}} for image captions? I'm not very familiar with template wikicode, so I don't want to screw up. I mainly want to add a caption entry to the template infobox so I can add a caption for describing the image in infoboxes such as the one in item (entity). Thanks - M0rphzone(talk) 02:49, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Done. Note that I haven't tested it, and the logic around the first image is pretty hairy, so it may not work as intended (or it just may break everything horribly =D ), so let me know if something seems off. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 03:12, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll test it out in my sandbox. M0rphzone(talk) 02:16, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

I don't know if you have noticed but both the gold disk and the red disk have the same ID, not only that the witch egg spawns withers and the bat egg spawns enderdragons.

My edit keeps getting removed

I have found an error on the Firework Star page, the recipe for a dyed firework star is, Gunpowder and Dye not Firework Star and Dye, I have edited this to the correct recipe 2 times and in both cases it was reverted back to the wrong recipe within 10 minutes. Is there a reason why my edit is being removed? Could you please fix the recipe to the correct recipe?

thanks, --Prizna 12:55, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

Did you read the article or my edit summaries? Adding dyes to a newly created firework star will produce a "Fade to color" effect. Admittedly, the color of the firework star used in the crafting grid should correspond to the outputted firework star to prevent this type of confusion. -- Hower64 13:08, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

where is the numbers of items?

hi im just wondering where can u find numbers of items? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 90.224.116.38 (Talk) 18:50, 23 December 2012 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you talking about items' data values? In that case, you'll want Data values#Item IDs. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:06, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

That information is covered clearly in the first lines of the page the player, including two references from Notch. Also, pages don't need to be "approved", just properly created and maintained by the community. --Kanegasi C 04:53, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Old vandalism question.

Hey Dinoguy. its Spencer. I was looking around in the Version history of Ghast, and I found Nasty vandalism by the User Herobrine-is-REAL. the user may be gone, and the edits may be in the History "book", But I was wondering... Since it was that bad (given the fact that the edits were racist). Can you or someone delete it even from the page history? I don't want anyone else to see what I saw. Thanks in advance. ☎ "Minepedia!? Да я чувак!" (Spencer10APSC) 22:20, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

There is a way to do that, but that editor made quite a few edits before they were blocked, and it'd be a bit of a pain going through them to find the ones worth removing. If you want to point me to specific revisions (preferably via email), I can hide them, but I'm not going to just look through all the edits to find ones that should be hidden. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 08:33, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
I'm not condoning the language used, but that incident was not the most horrible thing I've seen. Individual revision deletion has mostly been used for images, as thumbnails of every version are visible on the file page; text vandalism will only be seen when digging through the page diffs. Also, I'd hesitate to delete revisions for accountability purposes: it's hard to justify blocking someone for vandalism etc. if all the evidence has been hidden. -- Orthotope 09:48, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
Same here; I've seen far worse than that, and heard about even worse. Spending time around some of the noticeboards on Wikipedia shows you all sorts of ridiculously nasty vandalism. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 10:43, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

I was also thinking about this...

I was also thinking about making a Wiki Tech Support page or something like that. Were admids and other expert wiki editors can answer wiki related questions and do other things. And maybe add a tech support personnel list. Just a random thought. I thought you would like to hear it. P.S. I think we already have some of those things. Now that I think about it. ☎ "Minepedia!? Да я чувак!" (Spencer10APSC) 22:27, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

We already sort-of have such a noticeboard, by way of the admin noticeboard and community portal; in addition, a number of editors, myself and most of the other admins included, can answer technical questions posed on our talk pages (and the ones that can't usually know they can turn to one that can). I don't think it would be worth the extra overhead involved in setting up and maintaining such a noticeboard, given the other options already available and the size of our community. ;) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 08:36, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
