I've never editted a wiki before but I assume I have to add a comment on why I changed it or something. The amount of planks required to make a ladder was incorrectly stated as 3.75, 2 planks = 4 sticks meaning 1 plank= 2 sticks, 7 sticks to make the ladder makes it 3.5 planks. I also changed sign which said it needed 6.25 planks, it is actually 6.5 planks. -DotsTheHero

Direction matters[]

I've found that direction matters when building a water ladder. I've made ladders that you face south and it works, but when you face east it doesn't (you just go up at normal climbing speed). Anyone else experience this? --JonTheMon 09:40, 10 November 2010 (CST)

I did notice that when I built one with the ladders on the East face and the water on the North face it didn't seem to improve climbing speed. MrMatthew 13:19, 11 November 2010 (CST)

use of ladders[]

I made my own water ladder (hidden kind) and it would appear that ladders also slow you down when going up, as there is a noticeable loss of speed (very little though) when it reaches the singular ladder I put there to make it easier for me to reach a hallway in the middle of the shaft.Roady1990 18:00, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Pushing up to Corners (1.4 Workaround)[]

Ever since the Water nerf from 1.4, many players have been experiencing problems related to the speed of the water ladder. While facing the water, the ascension appears to be slower than traveling up the wooden ladder, which is rather unfortunate since the it ruins the point of the water ladder.

However, pushing yourself up to the corner where the ladder and the water seems to allow for the water ladder to work again. I don't know whether it's due to the southwest rule not allowing the nerf to affect that specific corner or if water block sides are all that are affected, but I think further study into this is needed. For now, shove yourself into the corner where the ladder and the water meet and hope for the best. Rage 19:22, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

If you start from the bottom of the ladder, standing on the ground, you can go up the water ladder as normal. --JonTheMon 13:56, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
    • This still works in 1.5 and will also allow you to ascend even with ladder gaps in the non-water spaces since walking toward the water bumps you up a bit. --Urian 19:39, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Fixed in 1.6[]

My preliminary analysis shows that both normal water ladders and hidden water ladders are now fixed. Fixed as in they don't work anymore. "Fixed entities reaching water through wall corners " I'll put some text in the page to reflect that. =c --Flib 12:47, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

A working water ladder in 1.6.6 was posted. I confirmed its operation in SMP and updated the page for current conditions. --gchristopher 19:29, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Just tested that design in 1.4.2(full). It's still functional, but this page would have people believe otherwise. Why? Firebastard 08:41, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Wikifying[]

Instead of saying "This is unconfirmed and may not be correct but facing one of the corners of the water ladder also seems to allow it to function," could someone change it to "Facing one of the corners of the water ladder also seems to allow it to function." and put that little "Conformation Needed" thing after it? I would but I don't know how. The Only Zac - Wait, so is the cake a lie or not? 20:22, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Done. 78.105.8.153 11:14, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

New release official 1.4.2 - Anyone get it to work??[]

Have anyone succeeded in creating a functioning water ladder in the new release? Aeonaflux 12:50, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, the design from after the last suffocation update works, but I tested it on my server so I'm not sure about SP. Firebastard 08:50, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

I have no idea which design dates from "after the last suffocation update". Can someone test these and clip out the ones that don't work anymore (or at least exile them to a "historical interest" section)? I keep stumbling over links to this page, and it would be nice to have current information instead of a bunch of traps to kill the unwary experimenter. --Mental Mouse 12:57, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Outdated, delete?[]

This tutorial has been outdated for a few years now. As a result, I wonder if it would be better to delete it from the wiki? 130.126.37.57 14:09, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Support, I really can't see how this page could be useful for anyone. 193.210.225.242 17:35, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Oppose, just found this page after watching an old video, it's a fascinating piece of history, the beginnings of Technical Minecraft. Never mind people still play Alpha and Beta, for their quirks, difficulty, nostalgia, or to see "how it was in the early days". Sharfpang (talk) 23:45, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
