Page content[edit]

Is this page for the official texture packs or can we add our own? Jaeil 18:13, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

It's for texture packs of all sorts, but I figure, using this system, we can sort out what is and isn't supporting the new texture pack support in Minecraft.--Kizzycocoa 18:31, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Is there a texture pack that doesn't support the texture pack support? As far as I tried, everything seemed to work. Are there some images that can't be replaced? Is this the hellstone/water thing? I'm a bit confused. Jaeil 20:22, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Well, yes. but I mean those specially modified to use the texture mod thing. not like, the ones where you download the terrain.png etc.--Kizzycocoa 20:40, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Some certain things don't work with the texture pack support, as they are loaded in a different way. ConMan8 23:06, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Do we need this page?[edit]

This page hasn't really taken off, I don't think there's much of a need for it on the wiki. Should we just make a link to something like instead? --DannyF1966 09:54, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

It's four days old mate. Give it some time. Aclectasis 04:25, 18 November 2010 (CST)
Is that all? Wow, time flies! --DannyF1966 10:36, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
The problem is no one is finding it. I've added some links around, hopefully things will start to pick up now. -F1racer101 05:01, 21 November 2010 (CST)
This page has became a necessity since Notch included a way to change texture packs from in-game. Most newbies will wonder what that is and will search for it. --Scykei 05:20, 21 November 2010 (CST)
Ditto, it may not be so pretty now but it is going to be very important in the future.  ACLECTASIS  11:39, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
Although initially wrong, this page did help me figure out how to use the functionality of the mod and texture pack button. I've edited the contents to reflect this as of version 1.2. --Addesso 14.10, 15 January 2010

Major Packs and Edits of Them[edit]

Perhaps we could add a section here archiving major packs (under the criteria that 1). They provide an alternate texture for at least 95% of the blocks (in terrain.png prior to the October 31, 2010 update 2 that all of the alternate textures are of original design) as well as edits of those packs (meaning that the author of that pack has determined that their edit is derived (meaning not of entirely of their design) from another pack, but has at least some of their own work in it.) - DuoNoxSol

I don't think you should upload .rar files here.[edit]

.rar is the hardest to upload to Minecraft, because it doesent work. It needs to be a .zip.

You can't upload it anyway. Neither .zips. Its funny, because it says on the upload page you can upload .zips. But you Can't!  YaYaBinksMinecraft  Woot JokeCraft v2.0!! 17:44, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Should hi-res packs be listed?[edit]

Since using high resolution texture packs requires modifying the game, should we even list those packs here? I added the disclaimer template to the hi-res section though that might not be appropriate. We should at least have something that says that non 16x16 texture packs are not supported and require client modification. RestfulMonad 08:15, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Good point actually. I'll subst and rewrite the template to better explain this. I think it'd be ok to keep them on this page as long as this disclaimer is in place (though personally, I think HD packs are the most illogical things I've ever seen). --Gnu32 12:24, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Possibly a helpful improvement[edit]

Perhaps it would be useful to post a diagram of the default beta texture.png with labels per texture cell.

like this one... [[1]]

Alphabetical ordering[edit]

It would be very much appreciated if downloads were ordered first by ascending alphabetical order, and then by version (latest to oldest). –The preceding unsigned comment was added by BlueToast (Talk|Contribs) . Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Some things to add.[edit]

I'd like to add some other files and more details about making the textures. For example, how to properly align the textures and how the edges aren't always a full block size (like cactus and cake), as well as the grayscales for fancy graphics. Is there a particular format/outline that I should follow, and are there restrictions on the images I am allowed to upload?Thepaan 02:46, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Rules: Default texture pack, remove GUI by pressing f1, press f2 to capture screenshot if you can, try to make it as clear as possible, and preferred day over night, UNLESS needed otherwise (eg. Pic of a texture pack on how it looks diff to the default) --Rocĸetor talk 08:03, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Are we allowed to add information to other people's texture packs? Because the 64x64 misa pack in the article has very basic info, which is ONLY 'Made by Misa'. I would like to add stuff. Am I allowed? Because i didn't add it. --Rocĸetor talk 08:00, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Right now, the descriptions doesn't look informative nor useful. Some of them are quotes (badly written ones at that), some are wonderfully vague and some aren't even descriptions at all! ("made by...") Perhaps we should streamline them to say exactly what those packs offer, how they differ from the normal skin etc.? - Bioran23

Agree :). Calinou - talk × contribs » 11:15, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
Definitely. I think we should also remove any pack that hasn't been updated after say, 3 months. Having all those very, very out of date packs in there looks bad, and just adds to the confusion. Gopher65talk 23:20, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Avatars for the Packs[edit]

I love the idea, but we need to set guidelines so it's more "wiki" styled. It should be an exact size, and the creator of the pack should make it explicitly for the wiki, and not the thread. Cool12309(T|C) 17:59, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

I think an author column should be added to the tables. At the moment, some of the texture packs include the author in the description, but most don't. You could, of course, click on the forum/website link and quite easily find the author, but I think they deserve to be given credit directly on this page, exactly like the Mods page currently does. --Charlie St. Cloud 02:26, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Does anybody object to this? --Charlie St. Cloud 19:16, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
Nope. Though it will sound like advertising, the whole page is basically that anyway. Verhalthur (talk)(edits) 19:27, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
I can agree with that, but I feel that's the way the Mods page is, so I think it's only fair to either do the same here or take it off the Mods page. --Charlie St. Cloud 19:29, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
I'd say that it is better to add authors to the Texture Packs page. Removing information tends to cause a little bit more conflict. Verhalthur (talk)(edits) 19:33, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

coterie craft[edit]

Why does the the version for coterie craft say 1.9 and it also says its out of date?

All texture packs saying 1.9 seem to say out of date. maybe because they would only be green if they work for 1.9 and 1.8.1? i'm not sure, i guess we will only see when the real 1.9 gets released --Wally

They would be green if it said "B1.9<small>pre</small>". I wouldn't change it though, since we would have to update that again for 1.9 --JonnyJD 13:36, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

HD not yet official[edit]

edits [2][3] suggest that HD texture packs work in minecraft 1.8+. It is true that minecraft does not crash, but if you try these packs you find quite quickly, that they don't actually work.

"Several people have observed that the unpatched game no longer crashes while loading HD texture packs and incorrectly concluded that this patcher is no longer needed. The crash has been fixed, but there are still a number of graphical artifacts (fire animation drawn on top of other blocks, etc.) if you do not patch. Custom animations also require the patcher." --MC Patcher[4]
"How to fix HD texture packs?"

There might be things that got better with HD support in 1.8 (these should get included), but please don't jump to conclusions. --JonnyJD 13:32, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

How does this work?[edit]

What exactly is the Criteria for adding new texture packs to the list? --Plet53 5:37 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Can someone tell me if ALL the texture packs are safe? BlockBarracade 20:59, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

I know that if you are worried about safety, you can go into the pack's folders and delete everything that's not an image file (.png). In other words, you might loose some features, like "chickens" are now called "ducks" in your game, and you would loose animated images (a jack o'lantern that has a flickering candle effect, for example), but you would at least know it was safe. (without having to understand what you're doing) You do not have to zip the pack back up. The zip format is only for downloading convenience. Also, if you ever download a texture pack and it wants you to "run" it, then that's not a texture pack! You probably downloaded some junk from a well-placed advertisement; delete it fast! 22:04, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
I too would like to know. Is the following true? -
"Because of how vanilla Minecraft runs, there is no way for malware files in a texture pack to run. Minecraft will only look for and use image files and the other certain files (used for animations, languages, etc) for displaying names of items. Therefore, whatever you place in Minecraft's resource pack folder is safe. If it were unsafe, vanilla Minecraft, by its own programming, wouldn't run the unsafe parts."
Is this an accurate way of understanding this? I don't know what can be done with the other file types and if it's true that someone could put malicious files into a texture pack and by placing it into Minecraft's resouce pack folder - you would basically be giving permission for Minecraft to run the malicious software (Like mods). 22:04, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
Minecraft will not be able to run the malware, as it is not a program launcher. It is looking for certain information, and if the pack does not specify the information, it ignores it or returns an error. Only way to get infections from a pack would come upon download, rather than running them, so get your packs from a trusted source. --KnightMiner (t|c) 02:46, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Making a texture pack[edit]

how do you make a texture pack? I have some great ideas and want to make my own. how long does this take, and how do I do it? -jwebe

Should we Remove Out of Date Texture Packs?[edit]

My concern is a lot of these pack have been abandoned and are cluttering up the list. Many players may have bad experiences with missing textures. Should old packs be removed? How old would it have to be to be removed?

Some peoples plays older version of Minecraft and have no problems with those texture packs. Some plays older version so the could use that texture packs. I don't feel that we must delete those packs. Maybe hide them with some sort of <cut> tag or make them an "Outdated" or "Abadoned" subpage? — MiiNiPaaT|C 06:33, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

spelling mistakes[edit]

i found one where scrolled was spelled srolled maybe you should spell check this page?

Animated Gif[edit]

I noticed that there is an animated gif for one of the pack's thumbnail images. Should it be changed to a static image like the other packs? Here is an alternative image we could use File:Minestuck.png Seanpyke 17:36, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Hello again. I gave a couple days for input. Unless there are any objections, I'm going to swap in that new file. seanpyke 14:44, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

i do not have permission?[edit]

im trying to download the Wild HD pack, but it comes with "you do not have permission". why is this? 03:24, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Terrain.png Guide[edit]

There are a few bits missing from the current guide for terrain.png, specifically I see the four blocks between lava and the break animation filled in on most texture packs. What are those supposed to be? --

No one knows for sure, but I think the first one of the four is the footsteps (the particles behind your feet when you run.)-- 05:32, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Only one works![edit]

I am using a mac with lion, and i have multiple texture packs downloaded from minecraftwiki. Only the default and the first one works. I checked to see if they were all .zip and they were. But, whenever i downloaded them, my computer decompressed them automatically (but I Compressed them again!) What do I do about this? I very sure it's not my computer because it's band new! Help Me!

NotUrAvgBear 03:03, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

You have to zip everything inside the folder. If you just zip the folder, Minecraft doesn't recognize just one folder in there. 00:37, 3 May 2012 (UTC) 7:33 PM, May 2nd, 2012

I don't want to mess up the format but i want to post my favorite texture pack i'll post a link so you can post it for me. [5] --Diamond warrior 23:58, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Whats this texture?[edit]

In the texture pack editor I see this texture called tunnel in the misc. category. No clue what it is! Anybody know?

It's for the sky in the End and the inside of the End Portal. whizzer0 16:45, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Archive sizes[edit]

Why are we keeping archive sizes in the table? It only takes more time to update information, as well as it doesn't serve any real purpose, and takes some space. – xPaw at 14:31, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

I was thinking that when organizing the texture packs that we ordered them by whether or not they're up to date then by alphabetical order. that way the ones that actually work with the current minecraft version will be first on the list.

ManiaKraft CZ[edit]

This texture pack should be removed , looks suspiciously like a virus. No Forum link, no picture, etc.

Chest Textures?[edit]

I noticed in the terrain.png that there are textures for chests are these still necessary since the 1.8 update?

Texture Packs that have only Minor Changes[edit]

Hey, lovely day today. I was wondering if on users can add links to Texture Packs that they found or created. I havemade quite a few since I started playing a year ago and I was wondering if it is okay to upload them on the forum or file-hosting site? Most of them have only a few changes, but they do look nice. Please do reply to me, Thanks, dozer2026 (Bulldozer2026 09:00, 8 March 2012 (UTC))

Packs Less Than 16x[edit]

I'm just wondering, since there is a section for Native/16x texture packs and a HD/32x+ texture packs shouldn't there also be a section for texture packs with resolutions of 8x, or smaller? Many people enjoy those, and I have seen many of them on the forums. 01:53, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Patching confusion[edit]

There appears to be conflicting statements in the opening paragraphs for this topic. For example:

"32×32, 64×64, 128×128, 256×256 and 512×512 are referred to as ‘HD’ and requires a 3rd party patcher to run."
"In version 1.2, Minecraft supports higher resolution Texture Packs"
"High resolution texture packs are supported on all versions without a patch"

These almost directly follow each other, going from "you need a patcher" to "after version 1.2 you don't need a patcher" to "no one needs a patcher". Perhaps this could do with some clarity? 12:53, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

I agree - I think what it is trying to say is that Minecraft can run custom textures, items, etc. from their files, but other parts of the texture pack, such as animations, don't work properly? That is what I interpreted from it. 18:59, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Some files not working[edit]

i decided to experiment with texture packs the other day, but when i tried to edit the "Light_normal.png" file, it did not recognize the new lighting (and even ignored the new clouds i had added earlier) is this a bug? the dimensions of the file are the same, so shouldn't it work?-- 23:53, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps you need a patcher, or your current patcher did not recognize you changed them. If your pack does, make sure you have them in the right place. Also, I believe that you cannot edit light_normal.png - just a guess on my part. 18:59, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Grey Grass[edit]

Why does the texture for grass look grey? Does anyone know? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (Talk|Contribs) 10:26, 24 May 2012‎. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

The actual color depends on which biome it's in, so the base texture is greyscale (same with leaves and vines). The appropriate shade of green is calculated and applied in-game. -- Orthotope 05:15, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh that makes a lot of sense, tnx :) (Talk|Contribs) 11:17, 13 June 2012

Texture pack Template[edit]

Has anyone ever thought of making other templates to put on the Texture Packs article? There is already one for the terrain.png, but has anyone ever thought of making one for items.png or even the new chests that were added back in 1.8? I think many people might find them quite useful. I certainly found the template for the terrain.png handy. If no one else can make them, I might be able to throw a items.png template together in a similar fashion to the terrain.png one --Marioman66 13:30, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

New forum link[edit]

I just made a minor edit, and thought I should mention that the forum link now points to the new Texture Pack Central. whizzer0 17:10, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

How do you change the colour of redstone wire?[edit]

How do you change it? The texture for it seems to show that the colour is determined in the code. But I need to change the colour, for off state at least, from red to white. Is there a way to do this with the texture files? whizzer0 13:29, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

link to the default TP files[edit]

I think there should be a link to the default files like terrain.png so that people can more readily see what the page is referring to, and to help texture pack artists update their packs. Is this something that is allowed by Mojang? Cultist O 23:10, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

What Editor can i use[edit]

Hi. I want to make a Texture Pack, but i don't know what editors i could use. Is one of them Micosoft Paint? The one that comes with windows? Creepergoboom64 01:02, 15 August 2012 (UTC)Creepergoboom64

Basically almost any editor will do, except Microsoft Paint. You need an editor that respects transparency, otherwise, a program like paint will fill in all areas that are supposed to be clear with some colour (probably white or black). This will cause big boxes to show around held items and so on. You can however use it to edit texture files that contain no transparency. As far as free programs that will work, I like Fotografix. Cultist O 01:35, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Oh, darn it! My brother has gimp. i have only paint. Is there a free editor? I don't want to have to pay a lot of money on something i won't use often. EDIT: Will gimp work? My Brother uses it for textures for another game.Creepergoboom64 10:24, 15 August 2012 (UTC)Creepergoboom64

I use, which is free.
The GIMP will certainly work; it's comparable to Photoshop feature-wise. It has a rather steep learning curve at first, so Fotografix might be easier to use. -- Orthotope 11:56, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Please, Read my Second and last sentance of my last post. I know how to use it, my brother showed me the basics. And i'll do it pixel by pixel. Creepergoboom64 12:32, 15 August 2012 (UTC)Creepergoboom64

I just tested my texture pack, but the whole head is black! What's going on here!?! Creepergoboom64 19:11, 18 August 2012 (UTC)Creepergoboom64

It sounds like you mean skin rather than texture pack. If not I need to know what you mean by head. If you do mean skin then chances are you've ended up with the head or the helmet space black. (The skin basically has two heads, one layered around the other, the idea being most of this helmet space will be transparent.) Try making all the parts of the skin image that you are not using transparent. Cultist O 00:35, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

I mean the Skin on the head is a very inky black. I Tried Changing the skin but it still won't work. It's still a inky black!Creepergoboom64 01:15, 19 August 2012 (UTC)Creepergoboom64

Have you turned the hat space transparent? (See here for what I mean.) What image editor are you using? Can I have your minecraft username so that I can download your skin to experiment? Cultist O 02:40, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

I have GIMP, and i did just fixed it. i found out that there bere black spaces around the skin! Nevermind about the head prob. And I'll upload my skin to my page when i can. EDIT: Sorry! I forgot to login again! EDIT: Ack! The upload page is broken! It says 'This page has been protected' And other stuff, so i can't upload it! Creepergoboom64 11:34, 19 August 2012 (UTC)Creepergoboom64

Okay, i got it uploaded. It's on my page. Creepergoboom64 11:34, 19 August 2012 (UTC)Creepergoboom64

Animated Textures Misinformation[edit]

After playing around with some animated textures in 13w02b today, I've noticed that the default behavior seems to be 20 updates per second (every 50ms) and not 10 updates per second (every 100ms) as the wiki states. I wanted to confirm with others that this is not an issue that only affects me or a bug. Galenos 04:03, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

List of modifiable files[edit]

This list (under texture pack creation) mixes together the 1.4.7 and earlier files and the newest files from snapshots. It should be broken up into 2 tables. -- 23:12, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

There should probably be a second table at least until the 1.5 update is released showing the new texture pack system. I'd love to do it, but I have not quite entirely figured it out yet. #trigger_hurt(I|T|C) Check out my project! 14:04, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Should the updates that require a new version, but don't add/change any textures (IE, 1.5/1.5.1 to 1.5.2) still be colored red? Or should we update them to green? What about yellow, to show that you need to update your client? Higejolly 01:40, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

New page about textures[edit]

Should we make a new page about the textures themselves, like how they are loaded and maps of the different areas for mobs? It could mean we have more info because those things don't really belong here. I'd be happy to do it myself. Lennbot (talk) 13:59, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

List of texture packs[edit]

Since this page is still relevant as older version information, and since the wiki is not being a hosting site for texture packs, should theList of texture packs links be removed? I know the pages are being kept as an archive, but I am wondering about the links on the current version of the page. --KnightMiner (t|c) 02:37, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Move installation section[edit]

The installation section of this page should be moved into its own page rather on this page. This is to keep consistency with pages such as Add-on, Resource pack, and Data pack. Skylord wars (talk) 00:59, 1 May 2018 (UTC) Skylord wars
