Page missing[edit]

This page is linked, but missing. Someone needs to fix that... Pokechu22 23:03, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

I found a leash in a dungeon while playing around with snapshot 13w16b in creative mode. it was in the seed '-4310341312778663078' at the coordinates x:-124 y:64 z:464 I hope this can be of use. 20:14, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

oops did not notice that on page sorry 20:12, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Required renaming[edit]

The page mentions that name tags need to be renamed first to make them work. But what if I want to name a mob "Name Tag"? Will it work nonetheless? --☺ Sven ? ! 15:26, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Related question: does renaming a name tag at an anvil cost levels, like everything else, or is it a free operation? Either way, it should be noted in the article. --timrem 17:54, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

I agree with both of you. How the nether does this work? 02:14, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Bananaguy 555

Name tags in nether fortress[edit]

I am not sure since what version chests appear in nether fortresses - I found them in snapshot 13w25c. These chests contain the same items the dungeon chests contain. I found 3 name tags in the chests there.

Mob despawning and dificulties[edit]

Anyone found out whether naming a hostile mob affects whether they despawn when you switch to peaceful mode? It seems logical that you'd still end up removing a hostile, but that would be an annoying way to lose a good rename, by wasting it on a mob that you later despawn by switching difficulties.-- 04:00, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

As per the trivia section, "Named hostile mobs still despawn if you switch the difficulty to Peaceful (and do not reappear if you switch back to Easy, Normal or Hard). It is therefore advised not to use name tags on hostile mobs, or to take great caution, as nametags are rather rare." 15:36, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Naming Villagers[edit]

I was able to successfully name an adult villager in 1.6.2 SMP vanilla. I simply renamed the name tag on an anvil, which cost 5 experience levels, and then right-clicked the adult. Bam. Name over his head. --Digitalgadget 02:07, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

I was able to name one too, you need to rapidly click on them with the name tag and exiting the menu that pops up for it to eventually happen SN202 21:36, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Despawn of hostile mobs in non loadad chuncks[edit]

Does somebody know if named hostile mobs wich are in a non loaded chunck despawn if you change dificulty to peacefull. For example if I have an named Zombie Pigman in the Nether and change game difficulty to peacefull in the Overworld does he despawn? (Asumming I only enter the Nether with a higer difficulty setting) 12:53, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

If a chunk is unloaded, nothing will change in it until it's loaded again. When moving between dimensions, the chunks of the previous dimension may not unload immediately, so don't assume it's safe to switch to peaceful as soon as you leave the Nether. -- Orthotope talk 06:52, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. :) 11:09, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Villager renaming "trivia"[edit]

In trivia it says both that adult villagers can and can´t be renamed, it doesent make any sense. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk) at 01:06, 12 January 2014 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

You can rename it if your fast enough. -- 10:38, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

i am doing some research can you tell me how to name a mob in the xbox 360 platform? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk) at 17:26, 5 June 2014 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Naming villager[edit]

I was able to name an adult villager in SMP by myself by simply spamming right click and open inventory key a few times with the nametag in my hand. Probably due to the latency, i was still in the inventory when right clicking to put the tag on. I've attempted it in SSP but to no avail, i'm sure something could be worked out for it though. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Masterman467 (talkcontribs) at 15:14, 2 September 2014 (UTC). Anvil not used[edit]

If you don't use an anvil to rename a name tag, would you name the mob "name tag"? I can't test this because I play pocket edition. 16:46, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

In the PC edition, you cannot use a name tag until you have renamed it, preventing naming a mob "Name Tag" easily. KnightMiner (t·c) 16:57, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
You mean you need to rename the name tag twice if you want to name a mob "Name Tag"? 21:36, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
Yes, which is why I said easily. You can also use a custom language pack to accomplish the same goal. KnightMiner (t·c) 02:26, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
If you rename a name tag "name tag", can it stack with unrenamed name tags? If so, which is renamed?
~From Contrapple Grid Empty Map.png 22:59, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
You can name a mob "Name tag" as easily as any other name. Just pop it in an anvil and rename it to Name tag. You can tell if an item is named if the name is in italics. Because it is different, it cannot stack. Based on the amount of talk sections on this page that are devoted to this topic, maybe we should put it in the article? -PancakeIdentity (talk) 00:00, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
Naming a name tag "Name Tag" could go under the limitations section. The cost (one level?) could go in the usage section. We also should find out whether villagers retain their names when turning into a zombie. And then we'd have to find out whether that's all the same or different in PE, console, etc. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 01:24, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
Tested zombifying a freshly spawned (name tag) named villager and curing him again in 1.12.2, and both zombie villager and the cured villager retained the original name that I had given to the villager. Although the new villager was a different one with different trades, the name retained just fine. 13:39, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

It's worth noting how name tags will prevent mobs from despawning.

Already mentioned under Behavior. --Pepijn (talk) 19:15, 21 August 2017 (UTC)--Pepijn (talk) 19:15, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
