Saddle differences[]

Is it really a needed item?[]
I mean, you spend a lifetime gathering up a double chest full of saddles, just waiting for horses. And suddenly, they add a 'Horse Saddle'. WHY is this nesessary, we already have saddles, though at the moment we can ride pigs with them...
