Well, I can't make the page, but I have a picture of it and Notch's confirmation: and --CDi-Fails 17:14, 20 May 2011 (UTC) I've created the page with just Tall Grass (that is what I put in) so you should be able to write in it now. Timberdoodle 18:11, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Using shears on regular tall grass gives you the tall grass plant that you can then transplant. This has not been tested on other variants of tall grass.

Since Notch released a screenshot, should we crop that in and use it as the block icon? FelixGriffin 23:44, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

How to get Ferns?[edit]

I want the ferns (The min evergreens) but I cant edit them into my inventory. Help?

Are you using Shears? If that doesn't work, tell me please. :D70.181.68.226 15:40, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Or, if I'm wrong in the previous post, if I am talking about something completely different, tell me. 15:43, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Missing grass[edit]

Hmmm.... It seems that tall grass has not generated on my map. Same with shrubs. I think that's because I haven't loaded any new chunks. Simply looking for confirmation

Yup. You need to either create a whole new world or move far enough so a newly generated chunk is created to see the tall grass. Eventually it could spread elsewhere, but you won't find it close by. --King Korihor 20:50, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

A better name?[edit]

This item has been called "Tall Grass," but that doesn't appear to be entirely accurate. At the very least, the item is used for both Tall Grass and Ferns, though they behave the same way. Additionally it's got that non-natural variant which looks identical to a Dead Shrub. Anyway, I'm wondering if a better name for the item/article might not be something like "Foliage Decoration" or something along those lines. "Tall Grass" is only part of the story. Xolotl 21:39, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

I think "Foliage" would be a better name, but it really depends on what it's called in the actual game. --Wipeout4wh 12:04, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, I had thought of that; it doesn't look like there's an official tooltip, though, if you use InvEdit or the like to add it to your inventory. So whatever name it's given right now would be unofficial. -- Xolotl 04:03, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

    • The problem with this name change is that most articles refer to Grass Blocks when they link to grass, so all the links will have to be updated. Can anyone (you guys) help out by fixing the links to go to the right article? - Asterick6 06:35, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

Grass/Fern non-growth-ness confirmation?[edit]

Has anyone else tried watching grass grow? I haven't seen any yet so far. :P Past experience with new features makes me guess that it doesn't yet. On the other hand, Notch did mess around with mushroom growth in this update, so it's there's a potential he got a similar mechanism working for these guys. --Srand 21:47, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Offset "bug"[edit]

Didn't notch say that that was intended? --Tinaun 05:28, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Jens certainly has... --Warlock 05:32, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
This is the bug: [1]. It's supposed to be off-center, but not off of the block. --Wipeout4wh 12:14, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
It can't be a bug. If the block placement system has been coded correctly (and after this long, it certainly *should* be), it would require extra code to give individual blocks random offsets - it would have to be intentional. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 06:40, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
You'd think so, but the bugs introduced in 1.6 were hard to fathom as a programmer >_> I believe the offset is intentional, and would look wild (As Jens described) if there were surrounding grass blocks. The origin of the tall grass block is certainly not off-centre, but the sprite looks intentionally placed. Razish 07:19, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Fire "Bug"[edit]

hi, was just playing recently, and noticed that you can set Tall grass on fire...

...but not in the way you'd expect. When you set the side alight, it burns the closest block (IE, grass or sand next to it) If, however, you click the top of the grass, fire will burn in seemingly mid-air for a few seconds, then destroy the grass and burn the block below it... --Dark Pulse 07:07, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Yep, I found this too when playing, got a pic of it for my Minecraft 'picture blog' thing. Also, I set a top of a tall grass (directly next to leaf blocks from a tree), and the tree did not catch fire, but one of the leaf blocks (I think the one right next to the fire) dissapeared.

How do you find ferns? user:tygor97

I've never seen one once, they seem to be very rare. Calinou - talk × contribs » 08:09, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

They seem to only appear within certain biomes (possibly just one biome type, actually). When they do appear they're all over the place, but they're admittedly a little more rare. One place I found was using map seed 7770115777688830845, at x=200, z=-217. -- Xolotl 17:17, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

With that seed, there are some actually right at the spawn, just ~10 blocks to the east Klaue 17:18, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, when I went to double-check before posting, I had noticed there was actually plenty all around. The actual spawn point assigned when the map is created can vary by a few hundred blocks in any direction; when I first found it the x=200 z=-217 place was pretty much right next to where I was. Hum dee hoo. -- Xolotl 17:54, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Seed "Dud Cave" without quotes, go at X 0 Z 66. Ferns nearby, and nice floating islands... Calinou - talk × contribs » 18:54, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Tall Grass underground[edit]

Today while exploring a cave underground I found tall grass growing on a dirt block, I'm guessing this is a bug. The grass was on a block 8 blocks above the first bedrock layer with no contact to sunlight whatsoever. I'll leave it to you guys to put it onto the page if you see fit. The pictures are here: Feelsgoodmen 10:29, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

It's because of the lava. The same thing will occasionally happen with flowers. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 03:20, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Will tall grass re-grow if destroyed? SpikeX 03:59, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

Only if you apply Bonemeal to the Grass blocks it was on. Verhalthur (talk)(contribs) 20:34, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
It doesn't regenerate/respawn naturally.-- JulleO_o 22:59, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Is the "dead bush-looking plant" really obtainable?[edit]

I have tried several times to follow the instructions on this page to obtain the third grass type by placing grass in the desert and using bonemeal. It always gives me the first grass type or dandelions. I believe this is false or outdated information. --Rdh288 00:26, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion - Make it spread[edit]

I have a problem with grass not duplicating itself; when minecraft 1.1.0 comes out and sheep feed on it for wool, we would have to search for grass instead of searching for new sheep, which is just as annoying. Grass should spawn another grass instance when it rains, so we could make a sheep pen, surrounded with grass, so new instances of grass can spawn inside the pen, get eaten and it will still proc later. 15:27, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

Sheep will also eat the grass from Grass Blocks, turning them into dirt (which does regrow into grass on its own). If you remember the nerf that was necessary after vines were first added, you'll understand why grass (and trees, and flowers, and...) doesn't grow on its own. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:23, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

Ferns No Longer Creative Only[edit]

Ferns, as of snapshot 12w04a, are no longer unavailable in survival mode. They now spawn in Jungle Biomes. In the block selection thing down the bottom of the screen, it says that ferns are Creative Only. Does anyone know how to fix this?Louiethefly 09:13, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

That 'block selection thing' is Template:Blocks; updated. (Pre-releases seem to be treated as the current version (see Ocelot etc.), admins can revert if it should wait until 1.2 is out.) -- Orthotope 09:36, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

4th tall grass type[edit]

ID 31:3 gives you 4th tall grass type, which looks like a green version of dead blush, anyone confirm? 12:20, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, this happens from 31:3 to 31:15, these shrubs are used as fillers, as the file format allows for up to 16 (0-15) "different" ones. Although they look different, they act exactly like the other versions of 31 in that they can be planted on grass and may drop seeds. They are also called 'Grass', unlike 31:0 ('Shrub'). -- 16:47, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

History bug[edit]

Somebody fix the "{{History||1.0.0|ferns were made available in creative." which appears before (not in) history section. Tried to fix by myself, failed. 14:51, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

 Fixed. --GreenStone (0x54; 0x43) 15:02, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

Renewable ferns[edit]

The ferns have been marked as renewable since 13w06a on this page. They still do not grow on grass with bonemeal so I wonder, is it true? How do you actually renew them? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Hartspoon (talkcontribs) 23:42, 19 February 2014 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

It's not very clearly explained on the page at the moment. Using bone meal on a fern will make it grow into a double fern; collecting it with shears will give you two regular ferns. Plant those, use more bone meal, repeat until you have as many ferns as you want. -- Orthotopetalk 00:45, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

White Ferns????[edit]

I was playing in a debug mode world, when I saw something that confused me. There was a regular fern in a flower pot, but then I saw a WHITE potted fern. Does anybody know about these? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by PenguinzroxXD (talkcontribs) at 20:20, 02 February 2015 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

That would be related to a lack of biome shading on what is likely an unused variant of the fern in a flower pot. KnightMiner (t·c) 22:37, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Double ferns and grass[edit]

In 1.7 not 100% sure of 1.8 can test but with shears you could get tall grass and ferns but this does not work in 1.9 is there a way to do it if so the wiki should be updated to say i think there no legal way and it only the give command now. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk) at 11:38, May 9, 2016‎ (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

It's right up front, in the Grass#Obtaining section: "They can be obtained as an item using shears. The double tall grass and large ferns will drop two of the respective single block tall grass when mined using shears."Sealbudsman talk/contr 16:34, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Yes that is the single version is there a way without give command to obtain legally the double version to store like you could in 1.7? 17:04, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Oh I misunderstood you, sorry. In survival, no. Outside of survival mode, you could use pick block, creative mode or /give <player> double_plant <n> 2, or 3 instead of 2, to get the tall fern. In short, it's still a legal block to hold in your inventory. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 17:27, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
No problem i probably misconveyed myself, i thought it was no longer possible to collect tin survival and as a collector in survival move i like ot have double chest i storage room i make like a enderman but i like to have to parts legal obtain ally and illegally obtainable that goes for the mobs to. Nolt sure it is possible to have enderdragon or wither stored anywhere without it destroying the place lol....16:09, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Meaning on "Grass requires a block light of 8 or higher to survive"[edit]

I'm confusing on the meaning of "Grass requires a block light of 8 or higher to survive". Does it mean grass cannot survive in poorly lit areas (light level 8 or less)? 135ty (talk) 14:20, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

It's an error on the page; tall grass doesn't uproot. It's referring to grass blocks turning back to dirt, so it's out of place. Fixed, not on the page anymore. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 17:11, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

Page split[edit]

Just gonna open this discussion. Personally, I  Oppose as they're basically identical and it doesn't make sense to have 3 of what is esentially the exact same page. -PancakeIdentity (talk) 15:43, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Oppose The idea of separating them is patently ridiculous. They are definitely not sufficiently different from each other to warrant different pages. 21:41, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Support With PS4 coming to Bedrock tomorrow, shrubs will essentially be a removed feature. They should be documented on a separate page (using {{outdated}}) to avoid confusion. However, ferns should be kept on this page, since they do exist in the latest versions. The BlobsPaper JE2 BE2.png 00:23, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

Split Shrubs as removed feature?[edit]

This is separate from the above split discussion and is merely about shrubs, the feature removed from every currently supported platform. I, personally, would  Support moving shrubs to their own page and making them as removed. -PancakeIdentity (talk) 23:22, 10 December 2019 (UTC)
