Citations need serious work. Can we get a forum link for the decoding? Can we get direct links to the images for citations? Darkid 14:30, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Will do.--Yurisho 14:54, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
added forum ref, and instead of ref'ing the images I just wrote "(click to see)" at the description...I think that will do the job..--Yurisho 15:00, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Isn't it just a corner of a golden apple??? :\ just try to cut the right side of it and match to the found "Experience orb". It fits perfectly! --Cith 10:21, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

There was a debate over that in the forums and the conclusion of every test was not conclusive. It doesn't match perfectly not in shape, not in shade, and not in color, but each of this non perfect matches can be possibly explained: shape because it is far from the player then not every pixel is drown, and color and shade may be because of the new light system, but we still don't know what the light system does to items, and no test where formed on different sprites in different distances.
In the end, there is no proof this is a golden apple, or that it is not, but it does worth mentioning.--Yurisho 14:14, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
However, it should be noted that notch did "confirm" (indirectly) the reddit thread/forum post deciphering the browser tabs in the 1.7 changelist image. One of these was Darkid 15:40, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
W00t! link please.--Yurisho 15:50, 16 June 2011 (UTC) Darkid 16:05, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
where do you see that notch confirmed it?--Yurisho 16:33, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Again, indirect. He merely stated that the information had been found. The thread was the 14th and he tweeted that someone got it on the 15th. Darkid 17:09, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Aaaa...the fact he said it was found is already written...--Yurisho 18:38, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
And is it just was a golden apple, why did Notch remove it and say it was an "error"? (And why the heck would you leave those precious apples lying around? :P ) --TheKax 16:04, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

It's called Photoshop.[edit]

It was a fake 'item' superimposed onto the picture. How else do you think he would have posted another picture WITHOUT the orb? DURRRR --ThesaurusRex84 22:41, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

All I got from that is that you say the orb was added using photoshop...that's stupid, the first photo was with the orb, the second was without, if anything - he used photoshop to remove the orb.

This page has enough evidence to be considered O.K for the wiki, IMO--Yurisho 08:38, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

We do not allow speculation on the wiki. Use the forum for this.--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 17:38, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
I think you admins should decide what you want to do with this page - Kizzycocoa already took down a delete request for this page...*sign*...--Yurisho 17:42, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Personally I think Theory is just a terrible word for the whole thing. It's not really a theory. It's unconfirmed, but it's based on official information provided by notch - including the name (which may not be a final name, but it's what he named his java classes). Theory implies it's making a ton of crap up. Nothing has been made up here really. --Warlock 17:53, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
But it's still trying to derive fact from circumstantial evidence. It's just not good information to put in the wiki. That still makes it speculation. --Gnu32 18:30, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

This is just speculation. This page should definitely be merged with upcoming features. Timberdoodle 12:35, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

The fake change list[edit]

If you look on the very bottom of the 1.7 change list, you can see the words "Removed Herobrine". Wasn't this the same joke that Notch put in the 1.6 change list? He probably used the same list, but put 1.7 at the top. It must be fake. So the experience orb HAS to be the secret item. Since it's the only one that has had any sort of real evidence.

I had a theory about the "ExperienceOrb." Let us think. With some of the later updates, he was going to include a new and improved lighting system (more yellow to the lighting, from an image he posted on twitter), and all this is is black and yellow... sort of like a template image! So perhaps this could be some sort of improvement to lighting sources! perhaps this will make a glow around a torch head... idk it just reminds me of the template image i saw in a doom 3 file when i was modifying the torch in doom 3 to look like the pedobear seal of approval. anyone else care to vote in my speculation? Da ninja 09:29, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

In another image we saw how the new torch aura will look like, and it is much, much more transperant, 17:59, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

I was just thinking recently about giant mushrooms. They have been confirmed and Notch has posted a screenshot of an NPC village with two mushrooms. He also stated that they will not spawn in most biomes without being planted. I personally think that the "slice" of the "experience orb" that was seen was perhapse a spore for planting giant mushrooms. This is of course my own humble opinion, not a proven fact.--Torraan 23:20, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Speculation. Why would it even do that, common sense. | TheKax | Talk 07:29, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Experience orb as... experience orb[edit]

Well, it's experience orb so it should give us an.. EXPERIENCE! And there will be EXP. LEVELS! What an interesting use of experience orbs! Lawl. Well, at least I think so - "level ups" in an Adventure Mode. But.. what this will give us? ~ L.K. 23:48, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Should we reintroduce this?[edit]

The last leaked image by Notch is showing a new HUD, with a health meter, a hunger meter, and an experience bar. Is it worth it to recreate the page?--FWD Talk 13:42, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

No, probably not. We have no idea what the bar is and even it was experience we do not know if Notch is still using experience orbs. Verhalthur (talk)(contribs) 15:41, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Livestream leak?[edit]

A file called SPorb.png was accidentally revealed by Notch during his LD48 livestream -- Maybe this is experience orb? IVI4tt 16:05, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

I think it looks like it's called "xporb.png." In any case, nice catch. It might be pageworthy. Verhalthur (talk)(contribs) 16:17, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Discrepancy in Experience Orb article[edit]

After reading through the article about Experience Orbs, I noticed a discrepancy in information given about the Orbs. In the first section of the article, above "History", within the second paragraph, there is a sentence stating experience orbs disappearing.

Direct quote: "Experience orbs can be picked up when the player revisits the location of death before the orbs disappear."

This conflicts with another statement on the same page, near the bottom of the "Trivia" section of the article.

Direct quote: "In Minecraft 1.8 Prerelease 1 and 2, Mobs would drop experience orbs if they died from any cause. If a mob spawner was near lava and mobs repeatedly burned up, since experience orbs never despawn nor burn, it would cause a serious amount of lag and could crash Minecraft."

There is no section inside the article directly stating experience orbs were changed from being fully persistent to despawning after a set amount of time between 1.8 pre1-2 and 1.8 proper respectively. There is also no citation for either of these facts. --Insouciant Mind 20:27, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

You nailed it, in the past it never despawned, but now it does. The facts don't need citation, because they are bugs and simple game facts.--Yurisho 14:13, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
I think for clarity purposes, there should be an addition to the paragraph from the second direct quote in my original message. Something along the lines of "As of the official release of Beta 1.8, they are no longer persistent due to a bug and will despawn." --Insouciant Mind 19:01, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
They don't despawn because of a bug, it's intentional. I don't see the point, if you want to add it, do it.--Yurisho 19:10, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Nothing on the page about what they actually do?[edit]

There should at least be something about them being useless currently or that experience doesn't actually do anything.

NOTCH TELL US WHAT THEY DO!! Why add them if they do nothing? 14:08, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

It has been stated that eventually they will be used to "buy" upgrades for your character (faster mining, higher jumping, attack strength, etc.). This just hasn't been implemented yet. --Captain_Clam 14:10, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Cheating ?[edit]

Is ther any way to cheat the Experience Orbs ? lg (Abum 21:10, 15 October 2011 (UTC))

NBTeditor. Don't know how, though. Google that, I'm sure you'll find something --HexZyle 10:57, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
After a lot of messing around with Single Player Commands, I haven't found anything that lets you cheat them into existence as of 1.1. However, I would assume that once 1.2 comes out, you could cheat to obtain the experience potion that when thrown releases experience orbs. maltaethiron69.14.137.43 18:35, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, no help here for singleplayer, but you could use the /xp [playername] [1-5000] code in multiplayer, kill yourself then collect the orbs on singleplayer. Only idea i have, sorry. 01:28, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Experience Values[edit]

I'm starting a project here if anyone would like to help contribute. When it's done, I'll be merging it with this and the Experience page. --HexZyle 10:57, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

When I fight endermen on the glass roof of my fortress, the experience orbs fall through. Can anyone confirm please?--Lirtsi 16:16, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

Update experience orb graphic?[edit]

The graphic in the experience orb page is greyed while the orbs are typically greenish. Besides that, there excist variations in 1.9 depending on how much experience the orb grants. Would it be a good idea to update the graphic of the experience orb to the greenish/yellowish one we see ingame, as well as using the differently sized orbs in the graphic instead of just the current one?  : :S A R A T J E : :Diamondapple.png : :T A L K :|: C O N T R I B U T I O N S

The size of the orb is correct, becuase no matter how small or large the orbs are in game, they are just stretched versions of the base image. Therefore they always maintain the same amount of pixels in the same configuration. The image is greyscale becuause that is how the game draws many animations and variations of colour, like biome specific plantation. --HexZyle 03:33, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
Not really, no, it has different graphics for different orbs.--Yurisho 04:44, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Under melee it is listed that if 2 mobs attack each other they DO NOT drop orbs

"In the instance of a mob brawl, (when mobs attack each other), mobs will not drop orbs."

However in the ranged section right below it says that skeletons shooting other mobs WILL drop orbs.

"In the instance of a mob brawl, a skeleton's arrow will cause a mob to drop orbs."

Can this be fixed or clarified as I believe all mob brawls result in no exp and that this is an error. Dak393 15:51, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

I think the skeleton shooting making EXP drop only works when hunting for Music Discs, in which case you would have damaged the Creeper enough that letting a Skeleton finish it off won't count as the mob killing it. EXP orbs can still be dropped in situations where the player dealt considerable damage to the mob, but didn't actually kill it himself. Cobalt32 17:45, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Exp orbs keep chunks loaded?[edit]

Can anyone confirm whether or not exp orbs keep chunks loaded? A server which I play on claims that they do and have them disabled, so it would be very helpful if someone could confirm or deny. Chdignam 22:03, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Player dropping orbs[edit]

It seems like you do not drop orbs if you drown. Tested when dying so I could regain my hunger. (Maybe only by mobs and other players.) I am not sure. HotdogPi Come to my page! 22:48, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Players always drop 7*level exp (capped at 100), even when drowned. --mgr 23:55, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Obsolete info?[edit]

The page says that the player must deal the killing blow to get orbs. Playing 1.2.5, it appears to me that in fact, the player must only have damaged the mob before it's death -- notably, when I hit a zombie or skeleton before it burns to death in the sun, it drops orbs. Can someone more experienced confirm or just change the article? --Mental Mouse 22:18, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

When a mob dies, it will drop experience orbs if it was hit by a player or tamed wolf within the last 60 ticks (3 seconds). The whole 'dropping experience orbs' section could be reduced to a list of ways a player can cause damage (snowball, melee attack, arrow, instant damage potion, reflected ghast fireball). -- Orthotope 06:24, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks... I'm editing the page. ETA: When did this change? That should go in "history". --Mental Mouse 16:14, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
It's true in 1.1, haven't checked earlier versions. It might have always been this way, but no one bothered to investigate the actual mechanism. Also, when ghast fireballs are knocked back by a player, they act as though they had been fired by the player. In theory, any entity killed by one should drop experience, though this should be confirmed in-game. -- Orthotope 23:55, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Proposed merge[edit]

The result of the discussion was merge with Experience.

I propose this page to merge with Experience, as most of the content here is just duplicated information. GoandgooTalk
