Cleanup[edit]

Ok, this article is a complete mess. The "trivia" and gallery sections are unacceptable. Instead of having a bunch of untransitioned facts in the "trivia" section, they need to be incorporated into the main section. For the gallery, all unuseful images (images that are duplicate topics of previously added images or unnotable topics) need to be removed. Please help if you can. - Asterick6 00:04, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Actually, if you've read any other article on this wiki, they all have trivia sections that are the same. It's okay. If they don"t fit into the main section, just put them into trivia. That's what trivia is. Ary31415 09:50, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Mob Spawning Rules[edit]

I seem to remember reading somewhere that a dungeon spawner won't spawn a mob if a certain number of that mob is in a certain range of the spawner. Is this true? 72.209.199.2 21:29, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

  • Yes, and I think by default it is 8 (it is customizable on the spawner's tile entity) Pokechu22 05:34, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Survival/Creative[edit]

I made a survival world. I found the seed, made a creative world with that seed. BOTH WERE 1.2.5!!!! I verified that it was the right seed, and it was. Completely in every single way. I was digging around in creative, looking for things I could dig in survival. One thing I found was two dungeon. I switched to survival, went to the coordinates, and it wasn't there! I went to the other one, and it WAS there. So then I made another survival world, and went to the cords. It wasn't there! Baffled, I made ANOTHER Creative world (keep in mind ALL THESE ARE 1.2.5!). Once again, went to the cords, and... IT WASN'T THERE. So, the dungeon was there in a creative world, and WASN'T there in 2 survival worlds and a creative world. Any ideas on what happened? I didn't check the dungeon that was in both creative and survival. Respond please. 72.209.199.2 20:42, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Someone else tried it, and the same thing happened. 72.209.199.2 22:45, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Could somebody who knows please add the info whether dungeons are present in any mode, or if not in which modes (peaceful/easy/normal/hard)? 88.217.115.213 08:15, 31 July 2010 (UTC) tia

Fairly sure that they exist in all the modes. If you are on peacefull, the mob will be killed immediately as it spawns though.--Genemos 10:25, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
found one on peaceful, but the mob spawner just made the smoke from death animations ;) and no items :(. --Nahere 23:51, 19 August 2010 (PDT)

Dungeons exist on peaceful. They are generated with the map and as such are part of the terrain. However, on peaceful, the mob spawner doesn't spawn mobs. Ary31415 07:16, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Can Dungeons be generated on maps which were created before update?--HYBRID-BEING 07:28, 3 September 2010 (CDT)

yes, but not in already-generated chunks. only in new terrain.--Kizzycocoa 07:43, 3 September 2010 (CDT)

Are Dungeons generated in the Nether? -Sasafras

no.--Kizzycocoa 21:18, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

map viewer[edit]

how can i open the map viewe or something

There is no map viewer (as of version alpha). You can, however, download a program called "cartograph" that will map your minecraft world for you. It 'tis rather cool looking. Cal-erstein

There used to be an official map viewer on the website, but Notch took that out along with Indev and Infdev. PurpleKiwi 22:46, 24 October 2010 (CDT)

How to find a Dungeon?[edit]

The absolute easiest way of finding dungeons IMO is to temporarily delete the stone, cobblestone, sand, sandstone, dirt, gravel and coal ore textures ie make them see through. This doesn't require any third party programs (except image editing), and you don't have to tab out of the game and remember where the dungeons are. Just remember to save your terrain picture so you can restore it when you are done. Once the textures are deleted you can play the game for as long as you like raiding dungeon after dungeon. If you leave at least some pixels on the blocks you can even do cave exploring this way, making it easier to find close by cave systems and mobs and makes ores more visible.

I'm looking to know if there are any clues in which anyone know about legitimately finding a dungeon. I do not want to use a map viewer or anything like that to find one. I have only found one right now and it left no clue that it was even there. I simply heard a spider in the distance and that was it. Maybe when the dramatic music plays or something of that nature that there is one close by either within a certain block radius or simply a certain amount of blocks away via X axis. Again, I'm simply wondering if there are any helpful hints on finding some of these without having look them up so to say. Joshgt2 16:56, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

If you press F3 and bring up the debug screen it gives every mob an ID number. If you see a large number of ID's together underground, it's probably a dungeon. Ary31415 07:18, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Im fairly certain it is completely random where dungeons turn up, just like clay.Toadbert
Listen for mob sounds in caves. Dig towards mob sounds until you find where it's coming from. Remember to dig upward and downward too. Also, if you toggle the fog over and over, you can see fires through walls. If you see a bunch of moving fires, that's a mob spawn.PurpleKiwi 15:25, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
I get this ringing noise a lot of the time when I walk into my base. It is almost like one of those Zelda noises that sounds off when your close to that secret objective. Should I start clearing out whatever is below my main base? Roughly how far away would I expect to look to maybe find it? Joshgt2 09:05, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

You might be hearing cave sounds. That means there might be a cave nearby. It probably won't be a dungeon since you dind't hear mob sounds by it. PurpleKiwi 22:13, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Is there dungeons in beta 1.1_02?

Booby Trap?[edit]

Has anyone had a Mob appear when they destroy a chest? I did but the room was very well lit, and I'm wondering in this is a booby trap or just a mob spawning somehow. Cairo

It's probably a bug that lets the mob spawn before the light level was calculated for that block Ary31415 07:20, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
Probably the latter Toadbert
What do you mean?
The mob was probably there before you destroyed the chest. Destroying chests does not cause mobs to appear. PurpleKiwi 22:13, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

The mob was probably already there when you did it. Or you didn't put enough light in. If it was a blaze spawner it would require about 40 torches to disable Niall&Niall&

64 Blocks?[edit]

I just found a spider dungeon and noticed something that might be random or not. Aftter I put the torches and mined all the mossy cobblestone, noticed that i got a total of 64 blocks, coincidence with the stack cap? Luschinfloggen 22:07, 24 October 2010 (CDT)

Nevermind that, found another one, 65 total. Luschinfloggen 03:13, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Audio Cues?[edit]

I have noticed brief hints of "creepy music" that tend to play when near a dungeon, but is there any way to make it stop without turning off the sound? Will destroying the mob spawner inside be enough to cut the audio cues, or do I have to dig away EVERYTHING inside until it's no longer remotely recognizable as a dungeon, right down to the cobblestone? --Valos 17:14, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

The audio is connected to the darkness of the room, not the fact that it is a dungeon. If you light it up, it should go away. If it continues, there is probably a cave nearby. Oa10712 18:01, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
Ah, my mistake. I o know that I built my main fortress atop uneven ground, so I simply leveled down some parts while paving right over lower areas with stone. Those paved-over areas are likely the source of those noises, since I felt no need to put torches in a place that was going to be totally sealed up. --Valos 23:58, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
Glad I could help Oa10712 23:43, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

dungeon[edit]

is it possible to see a dungeon on peacful on alpha?

Yes, although mobs spawned by the mob spawner will instantly disappear. --Cooldudetb 22:43, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

My dad recently found a double spawner as in two mob-spawners in the same room. Are these rarer than rooms with one mob-spawner in them? And if they are, then how much rarer are they? And sorry if i did something wrong on the page, i'm new 2 this. - L7E19
most likely the double dungeon is two dungeons merged together. There are often reported about dungeons touching on the corners, but perfectly adjoined dungeons are VERY rare. I spend a lot of time making maps and X-raying the ground for dungeons, and have found adjoined, but not perfectly adjoined ones. --Melzardust 20:18, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Smaller Dungeons or Dungeons Without Spawners: Trivia?[edit]

I started a new map (around 23h00 today) and browsed around it using the map viewer Minutor. I came across a patch of moss stone (~3*9) and upon closer investigation there was a chest inside a small rectangular room (directly above and connected to the moss stone). There was no mob spawner. I am curious as to whether this should be considered a dungeon, as it has moss stone but not a mob spawner. I have not investigated it in actual gameplay, but I took a snapshot of Minutor, including the entire map up until that point. I would upload the image to this talk page, but I am not sure how to add an image on a wiki (I don't use them often, as I usually just edit grammar/spelling mistakes).

If this is not a chunk error when the world was spawned, would it go under trivia that sometimes dungeons spawn incorrectly? Or would this be a once-in-a-while-not-worthy-to-mention-thing? If considered trivia, and if desired, I could get an image of it in game after I get some better-than-stone tools (as it is in a rather inconvenient location). Frozenne 07:31, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

You're not alone, i've found this twice. Most likely it's a generation error. I'll add that to the trivia. --Zkyo 17:29, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Do items in chests regenerate?[edit]

I'm just wondering if items inside dungeon chests ever regenerate or if you can just go ahead and take the chests themselves with you without missing out on anything later. Kruton 18:43, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

I've never seen any items regenerate - my guess is that the items are randomly picked when the dungeon is generated, and as such the items won't come back after being taken. Shokking 19:05, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
I doubt it, the chests are generated along with the chunk and AFAIK they don't change after being generated.--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 16:13, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

This is just a bug, I don't really think Notch knows about it yet, someone should tell him! I have experienced once, I got the items (YAY!) I then saved right out side of the room where the spawner should be, logged out and logged back in (on peaceful) and the spawner was there. (good thing it was on peaceful it was a creeper spawner.)

Natural dungeon mob spawners can't spawn creepers. They can only spawn zombies, spiders and skeletons. Ary31415 07:25, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

yeah, he's right. A creeper can get into the dungeon, but it won't spawn any. Will1982 13:55, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

Easy Way to Find Dungeons[edit]

  • OUTDATED*

It's really quite simple. If you have a (somewhat) laggy computer, you can hit the f key to switch fog level. If you don't see a blue screen for a second with clouds, turn graphics to fancy. This lets you tell if it's day or night, even in caves, and lets you see torches, and *gasp* the flames in a mob spawner!

Sandstone Dungeon?[edit]

I've just created a new single player world and spawned almost right atop a very shallow dungeon, in a large sandy expanse. I dug down to it, and instead of finding cobblestone or mossy cobblestone, I've found a roof made of sandstone. Is this a new development?–Preceding unsigned comment was added by Coolhand (Talk|Contribs) 20:30, 23 February 2011‎. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

I didn't notice that sandstone is now naturally generated under sand layers to prevent hanging sand collapses. So there's bound to be a traditional dungeon down here somewhere. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Coolhand (Talk|Contribs) 21:24, 23 February 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Eh?[edit]

16. Linking to online videos is only allowed if its the only way to show a certain event (like the void) or if they are official videos.

That's nice and all, but I want to prove the trivia that says, "Sometimes dungeons can be found on the coast on beaches." I know it's in the screenshots, but at first I couldn't tell it was a dungeon. (It had no visible treasure chest. D: ) So, if it's not against the rules, could someone stick this video onto the trivia? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuciKFC5SNo --42ndIcicle 23:43, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

Dungeons are the only natural source of cobblestone walls, so the walls in the screenshot should be enough to show that it's a dungeon. —KPReid 15:20, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Actually, water and lava could generate nearby to create a sort of cobblestone wall naturally, but yes, dungeons are the main source of natural cobblestone. --Zkyo 15:33, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

In fact, it is impossible for water&lava to generate cobble in that exact pattern used by dungeons. Also, dig the sand up to find the chests an the spawner. Bronek0990 18:42, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Dungeon chest stats[edit]

okay someone needs to add a dungeon loot stat chart:

For the mob spawner generator it goes like this:

private String pickMobSpawner(Random random)

   {
       int i = random.nextInt(4);
       if(i == 0)
           return "Skeleton";
       if(i == 1)
           return "Zombie";
       if(i == 2)
           return "Zombie";
       if(i == 3)
           return "Spider";
        else
           return "";
   }

so 50% chance of a zombie, 25% chance of a skeleton, and 25% chance of a spider.

Mossy Cobblestone? I'll just say it's random, no point trying to figure it out

Chests A maximum of 2 chests can be created. It goes as follows. 1. A random location [x] is selected. 2. If the location [x] is not air, and it is next to a solid object (such as a cobblestone block or another chest) then it is created. 3. If conditions of #2 are not met, it will try again up to 2 more times. 4. The chest is filled with a random item in a random slot 8 times, often overwriting a slot. Chest loot is generated as follows:
Items are filled into random chest slots; eight times per chest. Listed below are the approximate odds of items spawning in chests, and amounts.

Item Chance of spawning
in each chest
Amount
Saddle 4/5 1
Iron Ingot 4/5 1-4
Bread 4/5 1
Wheat 4/5 1-4
Gunpowder 4/5 1-4
String 4/5 1-4
Bucket 4/5 1
Golden Apple 1/125 1
Redstone 1/10 1-4
Record 2/25 1
Cocoa Beans 4/5 1

NOTE: Since the chest slots are set at random, as opposed to random intervals, there is a small chance of an item being set at a slot then it being overwritten with another item. 17:18, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Cocoa Beans[edit]

Should this be mentioned now, or should we wait until they are actually released? JesusChrist666 00:50, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

No Chest[edit]

I found two joined dungeons and died twice trying to fight off skeletons and spiders. When I destroyed the spawner, killed the monsters and placed torches, I realized that there were no chests in both of the dungeons. Cheep bastards. --Trollrilla 03:06, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

This is normal. And we're not Twitter. --GreyMario 03:07, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
  - I've noted that chest can also Spawn outside of the cobblestone walls in a dungeon.
 This has happened to me at least once in several worlds. -- Anonymous user.

Apples[edit]

Do they spawn in dungeons or not? Just not that long ago, the page said they did. Then someone brought coding proof showing the list of stuff that spawned and there was no apples. Now theyve been added to the list again but with a [verify]. Is this just another case of things having [verify] being flat out wrong?

No, they don't. Only Golden Apples do, and they're rare anyway (1/125 chance of spawning in a dungeon chest) MinecraftFan1 02:43, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Dungeon with no chests[edit]

I'm kind of wondering why some dungeons have 1 or no chests, so I came up with a possibility: is it possible that some dungeons only have 1 or no chest because a cavern was generated and therefore overwrote parts of the dungeon? In my experience, most of the dungeons with less chests have a generally larger opening. Out of all the dungeons I found (over 40 of them), had a opening. The ones that had the smallest openings (1 block wide entrance) always had 2 chests. So maybe can someone verify this? Quantad 00:44, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

That's not necessarily true. I've found a dungeon with only 1 chest that had a fairly small opening (a one block vertical line in one corner). The dungeon was on the surface so it can't have been overwritten by a cavern. I think it's just luck how many chests there are in a dungeon. Ary31415 12:36, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Dungeon loot[edit]

Okay, I have now seen both charts presented in this page regarding what may be inside a dungeon chest, but I think something's not right. According to the chart(s), cocoa beans have an 80% chance of being in a chest, but Redstone only has a 10% chance. The thing about that is, I've raided several dungeons since the update with the cocoa beans, and I've found Redstone several times (which seriously annoys me because I already have WAY more Redstone than I will EVER be able to use), but I've never seen cocoa beans. Am I just really unlucky, or is there a chance that the percent chances of these two things appearing were accidentally switched in the chart(s)?Wandergirl108 18:51, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

I commonly find cocoa beans, but I rarely get Redstone dust. This morning I even got a golden music disc, by the way :) Calinou - talk × contribs » 19:38, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

If you are raiding dungeons that were generated before 1.5, you will never find cocoa beans. All dungeon chests are pre-generated when the chunk is created, so on established worlds, yeah, you are kinda screwed. You'll have to explore brand new areas to find any. Definitely sucks (psst - Notch, add cocoa bean plants or something already!) --Warlock 19:55, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Chunks generated in Beta 1.4 also contain cocoa beans, just for information. The probabilites are taken from the code, they should be right ! Calinou - talk × contribs » 21:26, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Whoops that's right, got my versions mixed up ;) Since most of the server I play on was generated before 1.4, it still feels like the only thing of significance that patch added were annoyingly buggy wolves. --Warlock 21:29, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Okay, great, but I just raided another dungeon that was FAR away from ANYWHERE I'd ever been before the update, and I still found some Redstone but no cocoa beans. My point is, it at least SEEMS like it's cocoa beans that have a 10% chance and Redstone that has an 80% chance...or maybe just the latter. So, you guys are saying I just have the world's worst luck. Okay. Thanks for your help. (I also got a gold music disc from this most recent dungeon) :)Wandergirl108 00:21, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

I got a green record too this morning, they're rare :) The probability of items is taken of the code but items may overwrite old ones. Calinou - talk × contribs » 19:35, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Spawning in Dungeon?[edit]

The article claims you can spawn in dungeons, but wouldn't this be impossible since the spawn location is always on sand? If you can spawn on the actual dungeon floor, surely that would be under 'bugs' or at least read 'Due to a bug[...]'. The only explanation would be if sand fell into an exposed dungeon, but then wouldn't the sand remain where it was until disturbed? Anyways, it would be nice to see some citation. Troagador 11:05, 19 May 2011 (UTC) You do not always spawn on sand, so it seems like you could spawn in a dungeon. Timberdoodle 12:46, 19 May 2011 (UTC) Any citation that you can spawn not on sand? --Yurisho 13:34, 19 May 2011 (UTC) I don't have any citations, but it seems like about 1/5 of the time you spawn on some other block. My own world is spawn me on dirt. Timberdoodle 15:49, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

I doubt you would ever spawn on stone/cobblestone, but I'd imagine it might be possible to say, spawn in the opening section of a dungeon which may be made of dirt or sand something. The odds are probably extremely unlikely of course. --Warlock 15:52, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

I found this seed on the random seed page "3666440496532277820", which is supposed to spawn you in a dungeon put it in and see what you get! Timberdoodle 18:53, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Confirmed. --HexZyle 04:35, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I've tried that too and you can spawn inside dungeons. Though, without the use of seeds like that one, it's very rare. Talk 07:47, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

The fact is legit. I've noticed that the dungeon spawn is an absolute spawn (AKA, spawn at 0.5, 0.5) near the surface. Recently, somebody posted a seed 'relentlous' on the Minecraft Forums that also spawns you in a monster spawner, right next to the spawner itself (or diagonal to it). I noticed it was an absolute spawn at level 67. So, apparently, to spawn in a dungeon, there must be a dungeon at x: 0.5, z: 0.5, close to the surface (or on it), and the seed must spawn the player in the dungeon. MinecraftFan1 06:47, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

i once spawned in a dungoen and i raded it it considered it as a starter pack and it had tons of stuff i neaded: golden apple bread redstone iron ignots and a sadle!then i i took the chast too(:flxmd

As of Beta 1.8 you can spawn on blocks other than sand.

I don't know about dungeons, but I've spawned in a cave

dungeons in sand[edit]

so ive just encountered a dungeon in the desert, similar to the section on how theres a rectangular hole etc. this wasnt changed in 1.3 --Cyber Cheese 05:43, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

5 dungeons[edit]

O.K here's the deal: Joev14 had uploaded a file recently of 5 dungeons he found very close to each other, astounding, unbelievable, but just fine. The problem is this is not the first time he told of his find. He already made a topic on the forums about it, and in the forums, as in the forums, people were skeptic to say the least, so he gave a photo, after a long time after he said he'll give one, and when he was asked for seed and coords, he refused and refuses to this day. I really want to believe this image is real, but I can't, and I have had just enough of this editing war! I opened this topic so others will know why I take down you're picture, and why you should give us the seed!--Yurisho 16:04, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Pig dungeon?[edit]

On a multiplayer server, I encountered a dungeon with a pig spawner. So I assume anyway; the model was a pig (of course), but no MOBs every came out of it, presumably because there was no grass anywhere near. The dungeon had one chest (1 bread, 1 iron ingot, and 1 bucket). Has anyone else seen this?

Well its multiplayer, I think all mob spawners have pigs models in them, but may still spawn mobs. Only in SSP do the mobspawners correspond with the mobs they spawn. Jtlcr777 01:08, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Pigs are the default mob for a mob spawner. Like above, the model inside the spawner is changed to a hostile mob and often spawns the correct mob, or monster. Of course only in SSP, but if a bug in the future occured where on SMP there was no default (or Notch removed the pig, made no default, changed pig default to cow etc...) the spawner could go whacko and spawn all types of mobs, including those fake creeper spawners. Jedi in, um, I forgot. 17:04, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Dungeon(s) without spawner(s)[edit]

Also possible are dungeons without any spawners. (I just found one with 2 chests, moss stone, skeletons, creepers but no spawners. Annoying!)--J-wad 09:34, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Already mentioned above Talk:Dungeon#Smaller_Dungeons_or_Dungeons_Without_Spawners:_Trivia.3F Please make sure your topic hasn't already been covered before posting. --HexZyle 04:39, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Underwater Dungeons[edit]

Is it possible for dungeons to generate under the ocean/in a lake? It has been added to the trivia but i think it is unconfirmed. Can someone please post screenshots/link to youtube video/co-ordinates and seed if it is true? --HexZyle 04:53, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

They can't, but if a dungeon is generated below a sand floor, which is underwater, the sand will fall, thus allowing water in. Calinou - talk × contribs » 07:24, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

They can happen, and the sand above it collapses and floods the whole dungeon. You can tell by the obvious rectangular ditches under the water. This type of dungeon is an absolute pain to loot, because the water current drags you down, the sand has to be removed, and you have to constantly swim up and down. MinecraftFan1 06:46, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

I just found a dungeon totally by surprise after digging down into the ocean. I dug into the sand, under the sandstone, and then horizontally cleared 2 blocks ahead of me and was sucked down into a dungeon with tracks, spider spawner and the whole deal. David74.124.148.101 17:18, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Sandstone Pyramid Dungeon[edit]

I was exploring in a world when I came across a sandstone structure that was too perfectly pyramid shaped to be generated randomly. When I opened it, I found four mob spawners in each corner, a lava fall pouring from the center of the roof, a sand floor, and no chests. Can someone tell me if this is just a very weird regular dungeon or an exceedingly rare special dungeon? If you want to check out yourself: seed: Ihavesandwiches teleport to: X: -537 Y:73 Z:182 change difficulty to peaceful before you do this!

Tried it. There was nothing there. I ended up in the tundra next to a pool of water. MinecraftFan1 06:26, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Think that's an addon, I found one using Yog's pack (I think) like that but with water from the centre

When you did this by any chance were you using Weekly Snapshot 12w04a?

Plain Air Dungeon Picture?[edit]

Apparently, there's a new picture in the Dungeon gallery that shows a skeleton spawner that is visible in plain sight. In fact, it's not in the ground at all, it's entirely above the ground. Apparently, it's 'EXTREMELY RARE' and was found on a private server. I am sceptical that this is real...actually, I don't think this is real. Can the person who posted the photo explain if it is a freak occurrence or just a prank made using MCedit? Additionally, if you could acquire the seed, even if you're not the server owner, post it and I will, repeat, WILL check the seed. MinecraftFan1 08:21, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

  • This is possible if a dungeon generates over a lake, basin, abandoned mineshaft, and stronghold, however it is extremely rare. ~~ signed by Brickman2011 ~~ 01:12, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Close to surface dungeon.[edit]

I found a dungeon that was surface exposed very close to my spawn, with some nice loot. Should I post a screenshot, seeing as how it says these are rare? It was my first dungeon too. --MoronicCinamun 21:09, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

(add) I have seen a dungeon in the side of a cliff in the overworld, unopened to outside air but I had to climb up to get into it. This happened after v1.2 --Miner 14:37, 17 March 2012 (EST)

Updated Pictures[edit]

Minecraft Beta 1.8 has a different texture for moss stone than previous versions. Shouldn't we add pictures featuring this change? By the way, I don't know how to add pictures and I found a double dungeon connected to an abandoned mineshaft. Here is the picture: http://i.imgur.com/Pv7Gc.png I think it should be in the gallery.

Higher number of Spawners in 1.8[edit]

I've noticed a higher number of spawners since 1.8. I have found 5 spawners within 150 blocks of my base of operations. 3 I found within 2 blocks of each other. Has anyone else had this happen to them? 98.249.15.132 21:35, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

I surprsingly have found the opposite, with high dungeon rates prior to 1.8, and less now (1.8+). Although, it was probably just luck on the world generations part.

Natural Mossy Cobble[edit]

Um, I've never found mossy cobblestone in an NPC villie, I think this error is based on the picture tweeted by notch early in the development of 1.8. I'm going to go ahead and remove it. Prisma90 20:10, 25 September 2011 (UTC)prisma90

Diamonds can be found in dungeon chests?[edit]

Is this real? 121.220.89.227 10:48, 23 November 2011 (UTC) yes... BUT it is SUPER rare. chance is 9999999999\1 ive found 2 dungeons with 3 dimond out of 100 dungeons.on survival...(i keep getting trapped :()

No, they cannot be found in dungeon chests. Calinou - talk × contribs » 09:47, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

This seems to have popped up again. But this time, they are as rare as Golden Apples, but can appear as two diamonds as well as one. Confirmation? MinecraftFan1 13:44, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

This may have been an abandoned mineshaft that had the chest off from the actual mineshaft. Dummy2821 13:29, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Most common layer[edit]

I think the most common layer for a dungeon is 32, but I'm not sure. HotdogPi 01:34, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Diamonds in a chest?[edit]

Diamonds cannot be found in a dungeon chest under any circumstance my proof is this :

   private ItemStack pickCheckLootItem(Random random)
   {
       int i = random.nextInt(11);
       if (i == 0)
       {
           return new ItemStack(Item.saddle);
       }
       if (i == 1)
       {
           return new ItemStack(Item.ingotIron, random.nextInt(4) + 1);
       }
       if (i == 2)
       {
           return new ItemStack(Item.bread);
       }
       if (i == 3)
       {
           return new ItemStack(Item.wheat, random.nextInt(4) + 1);
       }
       if (i == 4)
       {
           return new ItemStack(Item.gunpowder, random.nextInt(4) + 1);
       }
       if (i == 5)
       {
           return new ItemStack(Item.silk, random.nextInt(4) + 1);
       }
       if (i == 6)
       {
           return new ItemStack(Item.bucketEmpty);
       }
       if (i == 7 && random.nextInt(100) == 0)
       {
           return new ItemStack(Item.appleGold);
       }
       if (i == 8 && random.nextInt(2) == 0)
       {
           return new ItemStack(Item.redstone, random.nextInt(4) + 1);
       }
       if (i == 9 && random.nextInt(10) == 0)
       {
           return new ItemStack(Item.itemsList[Item.record13.shiftedIndex + random.nextInt(2)]);
       }
       if (i == 10)
       {
           return new ItemStack(Item.dyePowder, 1, 3);
       }
       else
       {
           return null;
       }
   }

For those who dont know java, Minecraft is picking a random number 0-11 and which ever number it picks becomes the loot if the number is 11 there is no loot as you can see there is no "Item.diamond" in there therefore there can be no diamonds. So please remove it from the tables

It was somegody's mistake. One must have found a dungeon spawned right where an mineshaft was. The chests intersected and that's the effect. Bronek0990 18:45, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

More common in abandoned mineshafts?[edit]

I encountered 7 dungeons in a massive abandoned mineshaft. Most weren't in the direct path so they weren't crowded with arches. Do they have a higher chance to spawn in an abandoned mineshaft than a basic cavern? DarthBoredom 06:13, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

No. That was just a case of luck, and in fact you've explored a massive area as mineshafts usually make you "check" almost all possible places. Bronek0990 19:42, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Seed 'i dont care'[edit]

I'm curious to know where to find the supposed 3 dungeons, only a seed was given for 1.0.0 not a co-or, could someone please find the co-or? 101.98.132.222 12:54, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

I've tried that seed and all there is is a big mushroom island that's actually on land VERY RARE Nothing of much excitement.Dummy2821 13:32, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

go the opposite way of the mushroom biome and youll find a dugeon with no chest.Dummy2821 13:42, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Cake[edit]

I was seeing a video, and then the player found a zombie dungeon with two discs and a cake. Why isn't it listed?

It is impossible to find cake in a dungeon. It is not in the games code, and was probably edited or placed there by a player.

Collapsed sand and gravel[edit]

What causes the sand and gravel roof on dungeons to collapse on its own? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 132.203.169.50 (Talk|Contribs) 00:49, 16 March 2012‎. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

My best guess is that the process of generating the dungeon acts as a block update, making the now-unsupported sand above it collapse. -- Orthotope 06:12, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Generate Structures Option[edit]

I started a world with generate structures turned off but I have found two dungeons so far. To check that I had definitely set it to off, I made a second world on the same seed with generate structures off again. The dungeons were still there. Should this be mentioned? --MAX1592 16:13, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

I believe it should be mentioned, because I got the exact same results as you. Possibly, it is fit along the same conditions as caves (?) regarding generation. Although, I suppose it has been around a very long time within the game, so IDK.

Doesn't gold spawn in dungeon chests?[edit]

In Ultra Hardcore Minecraft season 3 they found gold ingots in a chest. It is a slightly altered mod, of course, but I'm pretty sure gold ingots are in chests now.

Gold ingots are not in dungeon chests. However, they can be found in chests in abandoned mineshafts and strongholds. -- Orthotope 01:05, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Dungeon frequency[edit]

I want to know how common dungeons are (and if there can there be 2 dungeons centered in the same chunk). Also, the chance of a dungeon assuming there did not need to be a cavern. HotdogPi Come to my page! 01:40, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Multiple dungeons can be found within 1 the same chunk. On Coe's Quest Coestar found 2 dungeons within the Ravine/Cave systems just next to each other. User:Dcat 5:14, 31 March 2012 (CST)

Dungeons have a random, very rare chance to spawn in an air block below altitude 64 (pretty sure it's this). The amount of dungeons per chunk is not limited. Calinou - talk × contribs » 22:19, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

They can be touching and still be in different chunks. Also, I think it only counts air or stone blocks at the edge of a cavern (and maybe a mineshaft). HotdogPi Come to my page! 03:49, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

small change[edit]

shouldn't the caption below File:2012-02-05_20.45.31.png be changed not that spawners show the correct mob in multiplayer? --98.117.19.205 01:36, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

I found an opinion at the beginning, stating that dungeons are very difficult. Dungeons are actually easy to most players. The opinion needs to be removed. There may be more opinions, but couldn't find any. TheFireHawkDelta 19:35, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

dungeon[edit]

What is the new loot in dungeons mentioned in 12w36a?

More chests than listed[edit]

I found a dungeon today with 3 chests, implying a joined dungeon, but only 1 spawner. Maybe dungeons can have up to 3 and I got lucky? If someone else could confirm that would be great, otherwise it might just be a bug. 174.62.101.87 22:43, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Interesting; have a seed and coordinates for this dungeon? -- Orthotope 10:58, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Golden Apple (normal)[edit]

In the table for item contents of chest it says Golden Aplle (Normal) and then the chance for appearing. I can assume that normal is the difficulty but I can see no indicater for this in the code for different chances on different difficultites. Should this be removed or the other difficulties added?. 60.225.62.24 13:16, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

There is a normal Golden Apple and an Enchanted Golden Apple --User:Kanegasi User_talk:KanegasiSpecial:Contributions/Kanegasi 13:25, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Changed second paragraph[edit]

"They are small rooms made of Cobblestone and Moss Stone and contain a hostile Mob Spawner and up to 2 Chests.

Finding a dungeon without a chest is very unlikely, but possible.

Since the imperfections of the generation of Dungeons is explained later in the paragraph:

"Dungeons are generated as a 5x5, 5x7, or 7x7 floor space surrounded by cobblestone and moss stone. Dungeons contain 0-2 chests (two chests may be adjacent, forming a large chest), unless they are overwritten by a cave or other structure, dungeons also contain a monster spawner, which can be used to make a mob spawner trap. It is also possible to find two dungeons joined together, with 2 spawners and 0-4 chests - although sometimes three can be found joined with 0-6 chests and 3 spawners."

There is no need for the sentence mentioned and it is now removed.

Also improved the sentence structure of the bolded text. The paragraph now looks like this:

A perfectly generated Dungeon will:

  • Be 5x5, 5x7 or 7x7 of floor space in size
  • Have moss stone walls, floors and ceilings
  • 0-2 chests (or a large one if two are generated side-by-side)
  • A hostile monster spawner (these can be easily utilized by the player for mob farming)

It is always likely for imperfections to occur because the normal dungeon can be overwritten by other terrain generating code, thus distorting the dungeon. This is mostly observed when exploring a cave and stumbling upon a dungeon within it. This can lead to dungeons without any chests, floor, perfect shaping etc. It is also possible to find two dungeons joined together, with 2 spawners and 0-4 chests - although sometimes three can be found joined with 0-6 chests and 3 spawners. The latter is rare, however. (Am I doing this editing thing right btw?)

Enchanted books[edit]

I found that enchanted books will always be the same kind if there are more than 1 in a single chest can someone confirm? 174.100.161.122 09:03, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

I have seen this also, though in stronghold libraries. I tested it with 1.6.2 ~ Used superflat preset: 2;1x7,1x3,1x2;1;stronghold(chance=32 count=3 spread=3) and on creative mode used eye of ender to locate the above ground strongholds. Checking the library chests for enchanted books showed with 100% chance that multiple books in one chest will be of the same type. I repeated this same process 15+ times on new worlds each time and had consistent results. Whether this holds true for dungeon chests I cannot say as they are somewhat harder to locate enough to test consistently. That said I would imagine, bug possibilities aside, if only a few occurrences of this indeed being true with regards to dungeon chests and no reports of the contrary we could safely assume this to be confirmed. 77.98.193.47 10:39, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

Cocoa beans[edit]

They no longer generate in dungeons? (they aren't in loot) LauraFi (Talk / Contribs) 00:05, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

That is correct. It appears to have been changed in 13w18a, dungeon chests lost cocoa beans at the same time they gained horse armor. The probabilities of the different items also changed. This diff almost shows the full changes (name tag was added in 13w16b with chance 1/13, which also reduced the chances of everything else by 1/13, but the chances in the table were never updated to reflect that).
