Creepers... Evil?[edit]

You simply must understand, creepers are not evil. They just get so excited to see your horrified face that they explode! take Freddy as an example. In creative, I look less beautiful to a creeper. He no longer gets happy to see me, and even if I punch him he'll just get mad and, well, you know, BOOM!!!

Yeah I agree, creepers can be used to mine down or when your in a cave. But they do get annoying. They can sneak up behind you a lot. But at least they make that weird rattling sound to warn you.

Kevin August 2012 18:43, 26 March 2013 (UTC) Creepers are not evil in PC edition. However, in Pocket Edition, creepers will chase you down beyond the range of in PC version. Therefore, creepers are evil in PE.

Note: This was tested in Creative AND survival.

Creeper spawning rate on forest biomes[edit]

Im talking about the "As of 1.2.4, Creepers seem to be spawning freely in forest biomes" thing, ive noticed a lot of times that this is caused by small areas of blocks, mostly underneath trees, being not lit by sunlight, an most of the times below light level 7 (even level 1 areas). pouring water, placing a torch or causing a block update on those dark spots will correctly lit the place again.

  • Trees cause the ground light level to be lower. And sign your posts. HotdogPi ⑬㊲ 03:37, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Creeper drops iron sword?[edit]

I just got blown up by a creeper and when I come back to pick up my items I got a iron sword in my backpack, can anyone confirm if a creeper drops iron swords or other drops?
I was playing singleplayer on easy and haven't crafted a iron sword so it must have come from the creeper, because I didn't see any other mobs nearby the creeper that it could have come from in the short millisecond before I was dead.
Sebbes333 14:54, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Have a look at the shiny new Drops page for a list of all drops. Iron swords are rare drops from zombies, so you must have killed a zombie before the creeper got you. —kpreid 16:31, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Creeper drops nether Star?[edit]

My cousin told me that one time a glitch happened and a creeper dropped a wither star (yes I know the "official" item name is nether star but I call it that), weird! 21:07, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

I know there's a mod with Creepers that drop them. CubeNinja02 (talk) 07:57, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

May 2011 Notch says creepers will be removed[edit]

"On May 12th, Notch said creepers would be removed in Minecraft v1.6"

He was joking. He also said in the same tweet that the top of the world would be dropped from 127m to 7m from bedrock, and all blocks would be changed into spheres. Please stop "fixing" this article to insert this joke into the wiki. --Mozai 16:41, 13 May 2011 (UTC
You know, Notch may do all of those things for a later version as Easter Eggs, and, like the natural spawning chest of versions before, will be removed versions later, if not removed in the very next version. Pressthebutton 17:57, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
Btw. Creepers are not removed and i dont think they will. The snapshot for 1.3 came out. Still living creepers.. From June 2012. He probobly said a ton of stuff but none has happend. So y do we all trust him. Im just still kinda confused about Herobrine. Myth or really Notch's dead brother.
You know it would never happen, guys, as the creeper is there to make it harder for players, who are not playing on peaceful mode, plus the creeper is the MineCraftian mascot, so it would not be the same without them. 13:21, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Indev vs. Alpha[edit]

"Unlike in Survival mode, the explosion caused by a creeper in Indev mode can destroy stone and other hard materials but the harder the material, the less effective the explosion."
I find this sentence a bit confusing. Does this just apply to Indev mode then? So, what can/can't be destroyed by a Creeper's explosion in Alpha? JaffaCakeLover 12:16, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Creepers can explode all substances but obsidian, the effect of the explosion is how far into a solid layer of the substance it will break if it explodes directly next to it. The Creeper's explosion is almost identical to the TNT. ReubenHung 06:18, 9 November 2010 (CST)
If that's the case, the "Unlike in Survival mode" should be removed. I've only ever played Survival mode, but this sounds like Creepers function exactly the same in Indev. I'd make the change, but since I don't know Indev (read as: I'm not 100% certain) I won't. --DaMavster 08:31, 9 November 2010 (CST)
survival =/= alpha--Kizzycocoa 14:35, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
Man.. Just when I thought I had things figured out. According to the Minepedia page on Survival, it could refer to Alpha, Indev, Infdev, etc. But, since only Alpha is supported right now, does it make sense to remove the bit about "Unlike in Survival mode" and just let it stand as "The explosion caused by a creeper can destroy stone... less effective the explosion."? It'd be clearer that way since the term 'Survival' seems to be ambiguous. --DaMavster 14:48, 9 November 2010 (CST)
He has a point. adding information about indev, infdev and survival is confusing to many. I think minepedia should focus on modes that notch intends regular users to play, namely alpha and classic (currently). The others are discontinued test modes anyway, so whats the point? --BlueLegion 15:11, 9 November 2010 (CST)
history recording. basically, they can't destroy stone in survival TEST. so, it needs clarification.--Kizzycocoa 21:15, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
Maybe it would be best to add a "History" section to each article for the info on past things? --Fishrock123 16:14, 9 November 2010 (CST)
Good idea, Fishrock123. There should be a "History" section, especially for that Easter Egg of a natural spawning chest [I'm talking about that "Steve Storage Crate" that led to a fake store with a screamer].

To answer this (THE ORIGINAL) question, please refer to this. TNT#Explosion_Resistance Keep in mind that it is "Temporary health" which (from what I read) refills after the explosion. On another note, I find creepers akin to griefers. 99seconds 23:41, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Electrified Creeper[edit]

An electrified creeper, as seen by Rzanio on reddit. I think it needs a special session describing it. We'll need to research his new explosive capabilities. --Alenonimo 04:58, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

I doubt he has more power than it's non-electrified counterpart. Cool12309(T|C) 05:13, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Btw again... Creepers can explode most substances. Not bedrock or obsidian for sure but im pretty sure there a few more.

  • At the time of your post, the only other things that couldn't be exploded by creepers were lava source blocks and water (source block or not). HotdogPi ⑬㊲ 03:37, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Music Discs[edit]

I have had a creeper drop a music disc before when it wasn't killed by a skelly. It was in a cave. I shot the creeper to death with my bow and the disc fell in the water current and burned in lava. Happened with me too. Except it was in my friend's mob trap and a skelly shot it. It dropped the green music disk.

"Neutral" creeper[edit]

Today, playing a save my friend sent to me, I happened to bump into a creeper in a mine. I was scared by its sudeen appearance and stabbed it with my (actually my friend's) iron sword and the creeper fled me and ran behind a block. Interested of its strange behavior, I followed it up, and it just stood still behind a stone block, looking around like zombie pigmen do. It didn't attack however close I went. I think I'm going to caapture this on film, so keep waiting for it. TheKax 15:11, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

EDIT: Nah, crap. Missed the chance to record it, since it just after about a half minute of me standing next to it, it started hissing and did the normal "blow up" -routine. Well, I'm still dumbfounded by its temporary pacifism... TheKax 15:16, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Creepers move to your left before exploding[edit]

As seen in this video creepers just move left (from your view when facing them) when they are about to explode just like skeletons walk to your left when starting to shoot at you. maybe it should be added to the article Djerun 23:34, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Cactus kill[edit]

I've used this technique a lot and it works very well. Plant cacti in several locations around your house so that if you go outside and there's a creeper you ran run behind the cacti. The creeper will follow you and run into the cactus until it dies. This works for all hostile things (skeletons, spiders...) and most often the dropped items aren't destroyed by the cactus. <<Pulpo 00:53, 9 April 2011 (PDT)

  • I also use a cactus wall. Be warned though that spiders can sometimes climb over it and survive. --Urian 08:32, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
    • Not really, i think if you place a block like cobblestone and dirt over the cacti the spider no longer climbs it. --LightningSh0ck (talk) 18:37, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
Why not just use an iron/diamond sword and hack it to death? It's much quicker and easier. --Rocĸetor talk 12:05, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Explosion cancellation glitch SSP[edit]

There was a creeper that saw me, but it was too low since my house is one block off the ground. When it jumped, it was about to explode, but then it hit the ground. I noticed that it was still swelled up and white. It then exploded the instant I hit it. This has happened twice. It seems like if the creeper's countdown begins and ends fast enough it may not restart the countdown. Or it might have something to do with it's vision of the player being cut off too fast for the countdown to restart. This was in single player, so it CAN happen in both current game modes. CactusTrio 05:08, 23 April 2011 (UTC)CactusTrio

I can confirm that, under most circumstances, the countdown timer stays idle for as long as you are out of line of sight of the creeper. This has been around since at least 1.3, and I've more than adapted to it since then. -AlphapUser talk:Alphap~Special:Contributions/Alphap 05:12, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

Can creepers explode if they see u through the glass? Does any body know?

Nope. It's a solid block and thus obstructs "line of sight", even if they're looking right at you. -AlphapUser talk:Alphap~Special:Contributions/Alphap 22:23, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

yep, they wont even explode if its a wall made of fence or a door--Higbey 00:21, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Actually, they still explode if there is a fence. One decided to blow up my fenced-in minecart track yesterday. D: And yea, they sometimes hold the timer if they lose sight of you. Happens all the time on my SMP server, incredibly annoying. --Zkyo 13:22, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
A wall of fence, or just a single-block-high fence? Because yeah, over a plain fence they will happily explode you. Eggdropsoap 18:52, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Unsure what caused this in my house[edit]

I'm not saying this was a creeper; but I got home heard an explosion, lagged epicly and found this in my castle: 300px

I have a password and secure login on my minecraft account. I also have no TNT. Does any of you's know what could cause this? --Rocĸetor talk 12:33, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

If it is in SMP, a griefer probably placed a bunch of TNT. Some people make hidden mob farms to collect gunpowder and make tons of TNT. If it was single player, maybe you are just incredibly unlucky and several creepers got struck by lightning. --Zkyo 13:18, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

If you "lagged epicly" then it was TNT. A few large explosions wouldn't cause that, but a large number of TNT blocks would. --Theothersteve7 14:00, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, I was in SMP. It was probably a griefer, even though I was banished from their clan to fend for myself; ah well. Thanks people --Rocĸetor talk 06:12, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

I noticed something when I first saw the photo. Do you see two creepers in the bottom left corner. It has to be a griefer cuz if it was TNT or a lotta creepers then they would die. I think it's a griefer WITHOUT TNT. --User:Minethecreeper

I don't see any creepers. It is only possible that a griefer with TNT because if it was a creeper that would have to have been at least 10 creepers. A charged creeper couldn't have done that because the hole isn't deep enough. And only the only explosions that cause lag are TNT explosions. -User:Witherphobia 12:11, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Well, creepers DO spawn in groups and I have some (incomplete) ideas: 1. Lightning blew it up 2. Lightening made it burn, uncovering a cave system 3. A lightening creeper? 4. uh that's it14:28, 31 July 2013 (UTC) 14:28, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

Creepers and Cacti[edit]

Is it just me, or do creepers love killing themselves on cacti, even when they do NOT see you? I have a quarry right below a desert, and whenever i'm mining, I always hear creepers walking into cacti. I would understand if they just took damage once or twice, but i hear it repeatedly until they die (20 times). There aren't even that many cacti outside. There is a solid sandstone roof above the quarry, so they can't be following me and walking into the cactuses that way. I've also seen them doing that from the top of my watchtower (layer 120, ground is ~70). They follow their normal random path-finding at first. When they bump into a cactus, they jump back slightly, then repeatedly walk into it and get knocked back until they die. I've never seen any other mobs do that, just creepers. I've also seen one randomly blow up while doing that. My guess is that when a creeper gets damaged by a cacti, they see it as an enemy and attempt to blow it up. Has anyone else noticed this? --Zkyo 13:37, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Creepers try to avoid people as mcuh as possible unless they're very close, so maybe they're running away from you; into a cactus. Also as all internet trolls know, creepers are related to cactuses and perhaps they are hugging the cactus since they haven't seen them for a long time. </iwasjoking> --Rocĸetor talk 06:14, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Lol yeah, one of my friends used to make a comment that the creepers were f****** the cacti xD. --Zkyo 13:20, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Baby creepti that point your skin and blow you up when you get too close :D!

Creeper spawn rate[edit]

Do creepers really have a higher spawn rate on sand and gravel? I have forts which I've attacked creepers from in the dessert and on a gravel beech and I've never noticed a higher spawn rate then in my rainforest fortress. Woodcock 13:10, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

I always assumed that with no Trees in the way, there is a lot more room for Hostiles to spawn at night, as there is more space. Spawn rates MAY be higher, But I don't really pay attention to those things; I just play the game. PrinceCooshie101 02:56, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Item Drops[edit]

The article says that creepers drop 0-3 gunpowder. I have been playing since 1.3 however and found all of dropping 0, 1 or 2 gunpowder to be common, but I never saw one drop 3. So maybe it's incorrect or only true for older versions? Arovian 18:07, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

With a sword with looting I you have pretty good chance of having 3 gunpowder drop, (Version 1.3.2) 13:31, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Creeper staying primed[edit]

I've experienced this at least three times now (my ears are still ringing) in single player: I make a 1 block high hole into an unlit cave with a creeper. The creeper makes a hissing sound and I back away. The creeper does not explode and usually would quickly return to normal, but somestimes it stays primed, making no cooldown sound and appearing almost white. The next time I enter its detonation radius, it immediately explodes. The primed creeper can also end up hidden behind a wall and the instant I punch another hole in the wall and it sees me from close enough, it detonates. So the block breaks BOOM with no delay. Did this happen to anyone else? Arovian

Happens to me all the time. Very annoying. It's already mentioned under trivia though. --Zkyo 19:46, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

This has been in the game for awhile, it has something to do with their sight and the countdown getting cut. The creeper doesn't restart since the cut happens so fast. Notch might have this fixed in 1.6 since he fixed a ton of bugs, but there's no clear evidence that it'll be gone anytime soon. CactusTrio 02:47, 20 May 2011 (UTC)CactusTrio

Were you on Hard mode? Creepers stay primed on hard. --iceflame3

Pursuit Through Glass in SMP[edit]

I don't have a program to take a video with but after some experimentation with a glass-walled building, I am 100% convinced that a Creeper can see through glass and probably through any solid block in SMP in at least some circumstances. Maloncanth 04:11, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

After some experimentation, I think I've figured out what's going on. I think the wiki should clarify the difference between a mob's pursuit mode and its wandering mode. –The preceding unsigned comment was added by Maloncanth (Talk|Contribs) Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Well, if the creeper was already chasing you; then it can see through glass wall 1 block thick. However, if a creeper just wandered towards your glass wall, then it CANNOT see you. 08:26, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

Pursuit mode mobs can see you through any obstacle at the full range of their vision, not just the one block between you. Turboplant 22:39, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Population on the Rise[edit]

For several Minecraft days now, the creeper population has been on the rise- on average, when I emerge, there are 1-3 of the things, but lately, I've found as many as six. Pikdude 20:17, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Could possibly be coincidental. I have noticed larger amounts of creepers than that on unmodded servers before. Verhalthur (talk)(contribs) 20:37, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

I think it might be on the rise I've been noticing that there are usually about 4 or 5 creepers wandering around when i leave my house and it sometimes seems like the follow me but aren't close enough to be pursuing.

Nah, that can't happen. I have noticed that during the day, Creepers will eventually wander off to a nearby cave. Pikdude 15:16, 4 August 2011 (UTC) P.S. That post above mine isn't mine.

Also, I've come up with another Creeper defense architecture- accessible roofs will allow the player to view if there are any creepers in the area. Pikdude 15:21, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

That is easily possible if you wait a bit during the night before sleeping. They have a chance to spawn more. Witherphobia 12:15, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Creeper idle sounds[edit]

The "creeper1", "creeper2", "creeper3" sounds are only played when they are damaged. Try to stay 10+ minutes near them, and post a video for proof then. Calinou - talk × contribs » 11:03, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

I've use Single Player Commands to spawn 10 creepers in a hole with nothing that could possibly hurt them. Every few minutes, I could occasionally hear a short hissing sound. I'll try again to see if they do have idle sounds. --Trollrilla 06:48, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
I built a cobblestone cube full of creeper spawners above the cloud layer where no other mobs could confuse me. I admit that all I could hear was footsteps and ambience. --Trollrilla 09:44, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
I have decompiled minecraft.jar and read through the mob classes. Unlike other mobs, creepers do NOT make idle sounds. --Trollrilla 01:00, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Your kung-fu is best.[edit]

If you're bare handed or just don't have a decent weapon to fight them, two quick strikes to a creeper will cause them to fly rather far back. If you back step after landing the second blow, the combined space between the creeper flying backwards and you backing up is enough to prevent most if not all damage from an explosion. On top of that, the time it takes to hit the creeper twice ensures it will most likely explode just moments after the second strike.

This seems to be a somewhat effective way of mitigating a large chunk of damage you take from creepers if you see them coming, especially given their high 10 heart damage capabilities! Just remember they walk left when they're near you and be prepared to adjust your aim for the second attack. If you're really good, you can even use this trick to hurl creepers at other enemies and control their detonation to effectively protect yourself.

That is a good idea how did you come up with it? -Benawesome150 Wow, now i'll stop using my diamond sword on creepers if this works. 01:24, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Fishing Rod[edit]

Okay, so do creepers explode in SMP when pulled by a fishing rod or not? Two say they do, two say they don't. FatherToast 15:02, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

They do and they don't. They shouldn't explode just by being tucked with a rod, but the tuck will bring them usually close enough to a player to ignite. I think it works this way, or at least it has worked this way before, not sure... Image:TK.gif Talk 15:06, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Nah, it definitely doesn't pull them that close; I have pulled a lot of creepers with fishing rods. During my recent SMP tests, it doesn't pull them at all, they just instantly explode (no hissing or animation). FatherToast 18:34, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
I disagree. From my tests, the first click will lodge the fishing rod in the creeper, and a second click will pull him towards you. I did this multiple times and the creeper only exploded on the 4th time, because he got too close. I did this on a local server, so maybe you're just experiencing lag, and the creeper is actually close enough. –User:Ultradude25 (User:Ultradude25/t|User:Ultradude25/c) at 22:12, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
The creeper is not close enough and it's not lag, otherwise there would be a crater near me and I would take damage; the explosion always happens immediately after the second click, no delay at all. I've also done this multiple times. FatherToast 02:29, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
Well I don't know what to tell you. I simply can't replicate it. –User:Ultradude25 (User:Ultradude25/t|User:Ultradude25/c) at 04:34, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm only new and I am on my third day when a creeper comes. I am 1 string away from a bow and can even make ammo and I am only up to a cobblestone sword. He is standing right outside my door and will not budge. I currently cannot get any armour. PLEASE help.

There are some things you can do.
  • If you have a mine, try going to the bottom of it, if you are far enough away it will despawn
  • Set the difficulty to peaceful, this will remove all aggressive mobs.
  • Staircase mine down to bedrock than come back to see if it is gone, if not go back down and mine a tunnel in one direction, than come back and check if he is there, etc
Hope that helped --Cby 09:54, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Thnks got it to despawn but I accidentally deleted it :( well I'll start a new one and take this into account. I really think this should be in the guide.

Happy to help, sorry about your world (That was what you deleted wasn't it?) and i'll see about putting it into a guide if it isn't already --Cby 10:19, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

My new worlds weird. I'm doing better but thats mainly because no attacking enemies spawn. I have been for about 4/5 days and no enemies have spawned at all yet. I am on an island map but at the start I had to swim across since my spawn point wasn't anywhere near any trees.

In the future, you can also dig a new doorway in the back of your house to escape; draw the creeper far away and then run back home, it'll lose sight of you and forget you ever existed. FatherToast 16:52, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Creeper in a minecart[edit]

Since I saw no references to it here, I made the edit. For those of you who want proof, I managed to get a screenshot of the event. The most annoying thing was that it destroyed my minecart in its explosion. The minecart started at the end of a tract, no stopping block, on normal rails. On the other end, there was one block air, and after that 3 unpowered powered tracks. I don't know how to add pictures, but the pic is at this link: i54dottinypicdotcom/34xj22hdotpng . Feel free to add it if you know how =D edit: can't place links without an account. Replaced the dot's(.) with the word dot

--19:29, 14 July 2014 (UTC)== 1.8 ==

As of 1.8 I've been dying a lot to creepers. Server is still on easy, same as it always has been. They're only supposed to do 5 hearts damage, yes? That's what I remember, but now they're one-hit-killing me. Anyone think this is a bug, or have creepers been boosted and I missed the memo? --WizardStan 14:50, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

I, and my playerbase, have noticed the exact same thing. I have seen constant creeper kills, on experienced players that die maybe once per week normally. I was hit by a :creeper (no charge graphic) at point blank range, and one-shotted. I had ~40% iron armor, as well as full health. My issue is that without the ability to modify this, or :change their countdown time, even minor lag makes them grossly overpowered. Tunnelrat 18:45, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
I noticed that creepers explosions are now [b]on par[/b] with TNT. I've also noticed that creepers seemingly die instantly at daytime. This may or may not be related to me living in a desert. (1.8.1) NeonJ 20:03, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Unintelligible Wiki Entry[edit]

The last entry under "Defensive Measures" reads: "If hoist with their own petard, the player is advised to block off the hole and wait until past dawn or tunnel away."

If this made any possible sense, translated into generally accepted English, it would roughly read: "If throw with their own bomb, the player is advised to block off the hole and wait until past dawn or tunnel away."

I cannot, for the life of me, discern what the original poster's intent was with this. The "If hoist with their own petard" is simply gibberish, the only thing I can come up with is that this was a Babelfish product. The next statement "the player is advised to block off the hole and wait until past dawn or tunnel away." - If one assumes they are talking about being stuck near a creeper, "wait until past dawn" needs to be "wait until the creeper despawns" or "wait until past noon", I would imagine.

Unless someone can translate this and adjust, I recommend removal. Tunnelrat 18:55, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

"Hoist with their own petard" is a Shakespearean idiom that means "fell into his own trap". I agree that it needs to be changed to something simpler, as not everyone knows the origin of relatively obscure idioms.Christino 21:36, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
Wow!! Thank you for dispelling my ignorance! I actually think that is great, maybe even just "If hoist with their own petard (falls into their own trap)" for simps like me =) Now that I know what it means, I change my stance on it... that's pretty cool! Tunnelrat 14:29, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Creeper Proximity Entity Damage and Jumping[edit]

I am trying to confirm this, as I have only had one player test it and while he agrees, it's hardly scientific.

When I hear a Creeper going Chernobyl, I instinctively run forward (as they are at least behind me to some degree, out of my LOS) and jump right before they go off. The result is that you are pushed further from the blast (akin to a rocket jump in a lot of FPSs)

I believe that you take less damage when you do this... but I can find nothing on Creeper damage vs. Proximity in any searches (I am almost 100% sure that you take less damage the further away you are). I am trying to get a consensus on where or not this is true, and if so, some sort of test to find out exactly what the damage dealt is on a per-block (meter) separation basis. (Ex: point blank range of <1 block = 7 hearts, 1 block = 6 hearts, 2 blocks = 5 hearts, etc)

Then, trying it with a jump and see if that matters... does the "push" effect mitigate damage somehow? Does the last second jump give you a bigger boost away than simple continuing to run? If anyone can try this, or just add their own experiences (even if you don't know exact proximity effects) that'd be great! Tunnelrat

I think some of the answers you seek are on the explosion page. However, I don't know what the damage radii on (charged) creepers or TNT are. FatherToast 18:04, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Which block is first to be enough hard to resist explosion? It would be nice if someone would say what would resist both normal and charged creeper. 19:21, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Blast Resistance a blast resistance of something about 40 is required to fully block an uncharged creeper blast. 20.17 is needed to prevent a ghasts attack. Not sure about exploding beds or charged creepers though. --HexZyle 03:30, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
Couple of blocks I recommend are Obsidian, Stone Bricks, and Bricks. I had a creeper go fzzzzzzz KABOOM in my house made of stone bricks and regular bricks. The exterior held, but the floor (dirt) did not. -Sandosius
Actually, cobblestone is as good as stone bricks and regular bricks. HotdogPi ⑬㊲ 03:37, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Damage boost in 1.9pre4?[edit]

Did creepers receive another damage boost by any chance, or is there something fancy like ignoring armor/blocking going on that I'm missing, or am I simply imagining things? Because I have no other explanation for why I seem to be taking upwards of 4 hearts of damage from a creeper explosion even with a full iron armor set (7.5 armor points - 60% damage reduction, I believe?), while blocking with a sword (-> halved damage?), with a distance of roughly three to four blocks between me and the creeper upon detonation. On Normal difficulty. 10:41, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure blocking doesn't prevent explosion damage, and i think armour only protects against explosions if it is given an enchantment. Also, I think creepers have had a damage boost because on my server on easy difficulty, 95% of the time the creepers one-hit me (unarmoured) --HexZyle 03:37, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
Normal server running 1.9pre4 here. Creepers definitely got a boost. One hit kills unarmored at almost any distance. It's quite a pain. Taedirk 04:43, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
Okay, after taking a look at the explosions page, it seems that creepers can deal a maximum of 24.5 hearts of damage (independent of difficulty?). While I'm not sure how recent this information is, it appears pretty accurate and mostly matches with my own observations. I'm not sure if it needs to be verified more, but I suggest updating the damage to this value - I'm sure everyone will be able to verify, at least, that a maximum 5.5 hearts of damage on Easy difficulty is no longer accurate in the slightest. 14:43, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

How much damage dose a creepers explosion do?[edit]

Lately I have been wondering how much damage a creepers explosion dose. On easy it is supposed to do ♥♥♥♥♥♥ damage but now it says ♥x24.5. I changed it back to ♥♥♥♥♥♥ but now its gone back up. I hope you can help me out because I was on easy mode with full health when a creeper blew up and I died.

If you have experienced first-hand that 5.5 damage is incorrect, why did you edit it back to that value in the first place? It's been updated for a reason. Currently, at point-blank, creeper explosions seem to deal 24.5 hearts of damage on all difficulties. This means that to survive at point-blank, you need to either wear full diamond armor, block with a sword while wearing iron armor, or have some (Blast) Protection enchantments on your armor.
Jeb was talking about "correcting" explosion damage in his twitter, though, so it might (hopefully) be reduced back to a reasonable value for Minecraft's full release. 19:27, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

I think it got nerfed in the full release; I've survived Creeper explosions in Iron armor. Cobalt32 23:51, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
Yes, they definitely got nerfed back to a more reasonable value; however, I'm not sure by how much exactly, and I don't have the means to reliably test explosion damage. Somebody with the necessary means to do so would need to perform some tests. 23:59, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Entity ID for Charged Creepers[edit]

In the page, it says that charged creepers have a different entity ID from normal ones, but no testing has been done to find this ID. I have three problems with this. First, I find it very highly unlikely that nobody would try to find the ID of charged creepers. Surely it would be necessary for some mod or custom map? Second, why and how would anybody find that the ID for charged creepers is different from the ID for normal ones without finding the actual ID? And third, I run Ubuntu and can't find a good NBT viewer/editor, but I unzipped Vechs' "Vechs Army - Supercharged Creeper x6.schematic" in the CTM Toolkit and looked at the contents as text, and saw "idCreeper AttackTime powered" in one place. I believe that this means that the entity ID is still Creeper, except creepers have another tag to tell whether they are charged or not. Pitzik4 23:46, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

I investigated this. I converted the nbt to yaml and got:

If you look at that, you see there are creepers with the powered tag set to 1. They have the same ID. 01:45, 30 December 2011 (UTC)misson20000

Minecraft 1.0.0 music disks[edit]

Minecraft now has more music disks. So i went out and let some skeletons kill creepers so they would drop me disks.
I've noticed that they don't drop all the disks. I have 6 disks so far: 4x "cat" and 2x "13". Apparenlty only the old disks from the Béta release are dropped.
Has anyone else tried this? Or am I having some extreme luck?

Acctually yes... Untill the Minecraft 1.1.0 Updated, you could only get the disk's in dungen chests or in creative mode. When the new update came out they edited it so creepers can drop them all

Creeper looking around before attacking[edit]

On my second night of Minecraft, I found a creeper, so i froze, hoping it wouldn't be seen. The creeper walked forward, stopped, and then looked both ways before finally charging and exploding.

New explosion Behavior?[edit]

I noticed in the new snapshot(12w05a) the creepers, if they are killed whilst hissing, they will still explode. I played on creative mode, and killed several with a diamond sword w/ a looting 2 on it. I did some more testing, and after killing a creeper(with the same sword) as soon as it started hissing, I noticed it's body was still swelling before it disappeared. Can anyone else confirm this?

Creeper Tests[edit]

I was running some test in snapshot 12w4b and realized the following.

  • they treat lava/water as solid blocks
  • they treat vines as solid blocks so they will not try to walk through them on purpose
  • They pathfind around even when not in attack/hostile mode
  • will not try to climb vines
  • They can pathfind you through smaller mazes
  • they will not travel too far from the player when pathfinding you so even is their is a way around a wall if it is outside a certain radius (i dont know what it is yet)

Someone please add this to the main creeper page because i cant secret333

Neither can I but: they can climb ladders(I had a creeper in a fenced out bit of my house with ladders touching the floor) but I think only down or maybe up one block dont explode if they are facing a block, and you are below it (in a mob fall trap)14:35, 31 July 2013 (UTC)14:35, 31 July 2013 (UTC)14:35, 31 July 2013 (UTC) 14:35, 31 July 2013 (UTC) Sorry for all the utc july yah dee yayah

Creepers can climb ladders, but not on purpose. If one is walking and it bumps into a ladder, it will climb up if it continues to walk. But if you're at the top of a ladder and it's at the bottom, it won't purposely climb up; it will only climb up if the previously stated situation occurs. Sorry if that's too confusing. Do you understand now? return_0 16:51, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Shouldn't the "Publicity" section be below the actual in-game information? Many players looking for information in the games could care less about what the community has distorted them into, and it's very irrelevant compared to in-game content or developer input. "Neutral" Charged Creeper[edit]

A creeper blew up my cat[edit]

I was in a cave system, and I turned around, a creeper detonated and killed my cat, walking right up to it, no fear, and murdered it, ignoring me completely. Is this a glitch or are cats useless now? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (Talk) 17:05, 16 September 2012 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

  • It's a rare occurance, despite the fact that creepers run from Ocelots and cats, on some occasions when the creeper focuses on something, it stays focused, regardless of whether there is an object designed to scare it or not. Creepers are not alone though, this has to do with a bug in the new AI given to mobs in 1.2.5, where even though there is an object to force them to run they will still attempt to get to the target. Another problem could be that the cat you had was in fact not following you, but appeared to do so due to a positioning glitch that has been present since mobs were introduced into multiplayer. It could also be like this:

P = Player X = Cat C = Creeper

 = Air

|,_ = Blocks of Stone or other ores

_________ |P X| | | | | | | |C |

In which scenarios like this the creeper would still try to sneak up on you while running from the cat, and therefor running away and heading towards the target. BTW in order to see the scenario correctly you need to look at it in edit mode. Trigger hurt 13:48, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

IN this case, could you actually hit it or did swinging at it go through the creeper? If so, that would be simply graphical. But if you could hit it, then this may be lag clientside, since single player has converted to using a server internally. Alot of times on some machines that don't support minecraft very well, as of this update, will occasionally experience glitched mobs with no AI functioning. If minecraft catches up, they will unfreeze and become hostile again, so watch out for that. I recommend putting some sand or gravel over them if they are near you so at least you know they suffocated and are now dead. #trigger_hurt(Talk)(Contribs)(Ideas Page) 12:24, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

No, I couldn't hit it AnthonyD98 18:41, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Hm, i have seen this before, but i can't explain exactly what causes it or why it happens, all i know is that it's annoying, and it scares the h*** out of me. #trigger_hurt(I|T|

The picture proves nothing; it could be just a normal creeper in low lighting. 03:35, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

did you happen to use the killall command for creepers? that producees a similer affect66.115.83.24 02:53, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

ive seen this glitch before, many times actually. sometimes the game sort of makes the player "hallucinate" and spawns a hostile (never seen a passive) mob that doesnt do anything, this glitch is even in pocket edition, once i was playing with a friend and he told me he got a skeleton trapped and that it wasnt doing anything, when we got there, there was a wooden fence cage sorrounding nothing, and he was still saying that a skeleton was there. funny thing when you continue saying its there. i would just close the world then reload it. he should be gone.

I been through worse with a army of hostle mob ghost (even zombies) in daytime

Creepers Creeping?[edit]

Almost everyone knows that creepers can blow up stuff, and that iron doors are the strongest doors. But I wonder, can creepers see through doors? People have claimed to have a staring contest with a creeper through their window but is the creeper actually looking at you? If so why doesn't it explode?

If it already knows you're there, it will go towards you. If it doesn't already know you're there, it won't find you. HotdogPi ⑬㊲ 23:59, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Are Creepers still dive-bombing people?[edit]

It's not in the current behavior section, but I remember they were doing so a few versions ago. (I've been careful around ravines lately myself.) --Mental Mouse 14:22, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Once a creeper blew up in my house next to my chests, good thing I only lost some cobblestone. Somtimes creepers think your house is a good spot to blow up. 16:56, 2 April 2013 (UTC)alex

Creepers in other games[edit]

A creeper is featured in the game "No Time To Explain Season 2", see: -- 12:09, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Also in the ipad game Plague Inc, there is a news header that says:"creeper executed for destruction of virtual property" 16:21, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Charged creepers[edit]

Why is charged creepers so rare to ever find, to be honest I have never found a charged creeper, infact if you have a mod that lets you use lightning then it would be easy TheNanoVicDevice 03:54, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

They're not very easy to find. You have to hope that lightning eventually strikes a creeper. Anyway, here should be a mod somewhere that lets you use lightning. -- Numbermaniac - T- C 04:02, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Is it necessary we have a section explaining the creepers merchandise? I mean why is this important ? Tell me if you disagree with this or not. 15:35, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

Is there any easyer way to get a Charged creeper.[edit]

I need help finding a easyiest way of getting a charged creeper, can anyone help me D:

Notch stating creepers are sentient plants[edit]

I was browsing information on creepers and found a link to a tweet by Notch where he says that creepers are more of a plant based species that are made of leaves. I think this goes very well with the confirmed information that they have the texture of dry leaves, because they are plants. I personally think this should be added to the trivia as it has been confirmed by Notch. The tweet: ExDeuce 21:48, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, Matthew Patrick of The Game Theorists says that creepers are a kind of peat moss. Peat moss explosively releases spores (hissing slightly right before), can become charged, is typically green and black, and contains high amounts of carbon and sulfur(main ingredients in gunpowder). It's all here: AlysonL (talk) 23:51, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

Damage to Held items[edit]

Just got blown up by a creeper that fell from the sky. I survived but the Looting 3, unbreakable 3 sword I was holding disappeared (with plenty of use left on it). After looking around to see if it had been knocked from my hand and then crying a little bit, it seems it had just been destroyed. Annoying as I was only using it cause I'd forgotten to put it away after doing some enderman hunting. What's the rule for creeper explosions and items in your inventory? 04:04, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

I do not know if this is a glitch or a bug, but a creeper explosion destroyed a Power V bow I had in my hand when I died. User:Meeples10 User talk:Meeples10

Dear Meeples,

Items can be blown up if they are on the ground. That's why TNT doesn't give all items that was blown up.
                                                   Now you know,

(ps, I am a derp.)

If the only explosion is the one that kills you, the items fall after the explosion, thus staying intact unless something else happens. Meeples10 t ~ c 21:22, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

creepers DO make slight hissing sounds when not primed, exploding or getting hurt[edit]

Creepers afraid of minecart tracks?[edit]

Playing 1.7.5 I've noticed in an abandoned mineshaft under a forest biome, that twice I've found creepers who will chase me, but then turn around and walk away, and stop following me if they get too close to a minecart track on the floor. Both times the creeper was in an adjacent passageway to me, with an opening between the passageways. Even though I was still in plain sight, they refused to follow me over the minecart tracks multiple times. Anyone else noticed anything like this? Is there any other explaination for this behaviour?

please add a new block[edit]

okay, ive been building a giant rectanguluar block (144x144x max world building height) where mobs will spawn and the player has to kill as many mobs as possable, only problem is i dont want creepers blowing it up when someones playing it. please add a block that is only attainable in creative that stops creepers from spawning within the radius of it, but still allows other mobs to spawn. please add this.

If your world has cheats enabled, then you can use this command: /gamerule mobGriefing false
This will allow Creepers to spawn, but their explosions will not harm your buildings.

Creepers neutral against witches?[edit]

It seems to me that creepers can become hostile against witches. I have a mob grinder, and whem i am near skeletons and withces they attemp to shoot me, but i am too far for creepers to explodes, and sometimes they explode with no reason (mobGriefing is false). I will test that in creative. --LightningSh0ck (talk) 18:46, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

I don't really believe in[edit]

Unsure I am not sure is it true that the creeper old texture (which actually was gray) still exist in the files of minecraft 1.7.2. If someone can tell me are they still here? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by XxAlekthenDxX (talkcontribs) at 18:41, 9 June 2014 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~ /

The file has since been removed. Likely when the creeper got an actual skin. Also, your title has nothing to do with you question, please try to relate them. --KnightMiner (t|c) 18:50, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Update to "combat" section - advanced tactics - 8/23/14[edit]

I updated the combat section to include tactics that become viable once players figure out how to use the anvil to create high-level enchantments. Sharpness V diamond sword + strength potion is a consistent one-shot, I have never seen a creeper survive it. Otherwise, Sharpness IV or V allows consistent two-shotting as long as you can hit the creeper fast enough. No need for hit and run. Power V and Flame I bow at full draw is almost always a one-shot, either outright or via burning. All of these methods require significant setup (diamonds, enchanting table, anvil, lots of XP levels) but once available they're a lot less of a hassle than hit-and-run.

It really is satisfying to walk up to a pack of 6 creepers and mow them all down before any of them can react. Payback is rough sometimes, and considering how many times creepers snuck up on me, killed me, and blown up my gear, they've racked up quite a bill.

Figured I would mention the addition here in case they are not appropriate, but I figured players would want to know easier and faster ways to kill these things. SenjoroNie (talk) 13:51, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Really the combat section should not exist though. Most combat information should be on Tutorials/Combat, it is just still here because the style guide lacked information on mob articles for awhile. If you wouldn't mind updating the creeper information there, I'd like to rewrite this article to remove some of the tutorial information. --KnightMiner (t|c) 21:28, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
