Destroyed chests in Alpha multiplayer[edit]

"In Alpha multiplayer, items dropped from a destroyed chest block might not be able to be picked up." - I've never seen this happen, can someone confirm/give a source?

Madgeek 19:49, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

it happens often, sometimes you cant pick up items. Try placing a painting and breaking it.Toadbert

It's just server/connection lag. Just like it sometimes also takes a long time for you to see your own chat message. PurpleKiwi 17:44, 18 October 2010 (CDT)

Chests and Water[edit]

Not exactly sure whats causing this, any ideas? Hamiltond465 11:52, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

that's a bug with water. just cover the right hole, and it'll go away.--Kizzycocoa 12:32, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
Frankly, I care more about the hole on the left. The one on the right was made for comparison Hamiltond465 22:34, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
water does not flow outwards like that. say, if you have a waterfall. by logic, with your assumed physics, that waterfall would grow A LOT. a single 10-block high waterfall would be 21x21 at the bottom of that height. so, water falls down without going to the side, unless there is ground under, then it spreads. know what I mean?--Kizzycocoa 17:40, 20 October 2010 (CDT)
The movement of water seems very stange when you think about it, but as players get more experienced with water motion, it seems to make more sense. The issue here is that water, if placed between three blocks at the same level and a sudden dropoff, will spread towards the dropoff in a straight line, away from the flat edges. This explains the hole on the left. If all the areas around the spring drop down, then the water will spread evenly in all directions. This explains the hole on the right. Chests and Glass[edit]

I just found out that if glass is placed above a chest, it does not stop it from opening. Confirmation from other people? Or is mine just a bug. ReubenHung 07:27, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

I just tested it, and it does work. I'd imagine it's not intentional, probably due to it allowing light in. -shrug- -- Toshu (talk) 07:35, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
This happened to me as well–Preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk) at 1 November 2011 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~
It's a nonsolid block. hotdogPi--t--c--QUIZ! 23:42, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi, ive added a little trick i found by luck. And i moved the picture and versioninformations a little bit. Hope thats fine with you. Pls test that trick with the torch, and report if it works for you. --Cass 15:17, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Also works the same way with half blocks instead of glass, and not just on a chest but almost any open-able block Adi Tetac 22:23, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

I also found a way to put a torch on top of a chest without using glass or anything. you put the torch on top of snow that would be on top of the chest. Short version: if there is snow on a chest you can put a torch on top of it. --Kenny 15:08, 8 April 2011 (EST)

Hanging a chest above a fire will not burn it, as far as I tested. When placed next to lava random fires will start AROUND the chest, but the chest itself will never catch fire. The fires will start even on cobblestone and obsidian.

This might be something to add to the wiki page, as I first thought nothing would happen and then caught myself burning next to my chest for no apparant reason.

I only tested in survival, alpha 1.2.2, singleplayer

Just confirmed this in beta 1.2_02 when I accidentally dumped a bucket of lava that killed me before I could pick it up. Chests cannot be set on fire with lava. I'll start experimenting with the specifics now, but for the moment, I think it's safe to assume that chests cannot be set on fire.
ISmartMan 17:51, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I'm ready to call it. I cannot find a way to destroy a placed chest block using fire or lava. I occasionally was able to get some flames to appear on the block by setting fire to adjacent blocks, but the fire would go out after a couple seconds and left the chest undamaged. Until someone can provide instructions on how to destroy a placed chest block with fire, I'm going to say it's impossible.

double chest glitch[edit]

I found this wierd glitch with large chests: If you place a chest next to a large chest, it will try to "connect" with the big chest, giving it the texture of half a large chest. The big chest will not change, and they will still be seperate but the small chest looks really wierd.–Preceding unsigned comment was added by Qxz4019 (talkcontribs) at 19 November 2010 (UTC). New bug[edit]

Is anyone else experiencing a bag with the new Beta 1.2 update with chests where your character begins to move uncontrollably after opening a chest sometimes. Moving the mouse around causes you to seemingly randomly change direction and speed the bug will drag you around the map - the time I have got this I have stopped it by climbing a ladder. Also, I have experienced being constantly jumping after entering a chest and jumped manually to stop it. Not sure what's causing this... FragPl0x

I've personally expierienced something similar where when I open a chest my character will continue moving, though not too uncontrollably, as soon as I leave the window he always stops. It's fairly uncommon, but it is annoying. And unlike what the previous patches have done to ensure that if you walk away from your chest the window closes, it never does when it does this. -St. Fenix (UserTalk) 18:23, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
I've experienced something kind of similar; when I right click on a chest and press the 'w' key at the same time, it frequently maintains the forward movement that is normally caused by the 'w' key... even when I let go. If I move out of range of the chest the gui closes but the movement remains, I can regain control by pressing 'w' again after closing the chest screen. Could this be related? Westward Chests[edit]

It appears to me that any placed free-standing chest (including surrounds by half-steps) will face west. In case of an attached chest it will face South.

Also, if it is bordered on one side, it will face opposite that side. If it is bordered on two sides it will face South, if south is blocked it will face North, if North and South are blocked it will face West. If three sides are blocked it will face the fourth open side. If all four sides are blocked it will face South, although this is useless. Thus, the only way to make a chest face East is to have it against a single wall which is Westward of it.

If at any time you change the number of blocks bordering it it will revise direction accordingly.

Confirm/deny before I post this? Darkid 18:47, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

It does for me in SMP. Calinou - talk × contribs » 19:14, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Yes, this is true. Changing which side the latch on a chest is on also does not count as a block update, which I checked with the water flow trick.–Preceding unsigned comment was added by Holy goalies (talkcontribs) at 17 April 2011 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Making chests larger than 2 chests no longer possible[edit]

At least, it is no longer possible to place a fluid block next to a double chest and then place a chest where the fluid block is to make a triple (or larger) chest. You can still place other blocks on top of the water, so my assumption is that the chest coding has changed. I also updated the chest page in the glitches section to reflect this (at the end of the last bulletin), but I don't know when this happened exactly. I'm certain it was still possible in 1.4.–Preceding unsigned comment was added by Holy goalies (talkcontribs) at 17 April 2011 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Chest contents/direction[edit]

You have a double chest. Due to the fact that you obcessively re-arrange your supplies despite the fact that you can find them as it is, you've descovered that you only need one half of the chest now. You want to harvest the other half, but you're not sure which half is the one with the stuff in it. You need to know which half of the chest to harvest, so you pull up minecraftwiki and you look up "Chest." Do you get help? The answer is a resounding "no." Here's the information I've gathered:

Latch facing South: The left chest corresponds with the bottom half of the inventory. Latch facing West: The left chest corresponds with the top half of the inventory. Latch facing North: The left chest corresponds with the top half of the inventory. Latch facing East: The left chest corresponds with the bottom half of the inventory.

I think someone should incorporate this knowledge into the article, but I don't know enough about how wikis work to put this information in a place where it logically fits into the article. Can someone help me out here?–Preceding unsigned comment was added by Beefrocks (talkcontribs) at 28 May 2011 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Chest glitches[edit]

Somehow when I spawn chests using single player commands or as an opperator in a server, the chest will act like a torch. It will give off light and drop as a resource after one click, just like a torch. And after a random amount of time it will dissapear. I don't know exactly when it started or if anyone else has this problem. {{static link|~Zinkopus~}}

New Chest Animation Causing Handle to Glitch[edit]

The top of the chest glitches through blocks sometimes upon use, as can be seen in this screenshot of the top of the chest going through a sign.

Chest Bug[edit]

Not sure how I got it to happen to be honest, but I am pretty sure it has to do with the hatch and the chest. It just remains open even when I click to look inside and close it again. Just remains open. Anyone else seen this? --Throex TALK|CONT 22:24, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

I can confirm this for SMP. On our server we sometimes have chests randomly remaining open and everyone online can see them that way. The server runs on version 1.8.1 -- 03:20, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

New Sounds[edit]

Chests suddenly started making sounds that werent the same as door noises. I don't recall this happening two days ago and my client still says 1.8.1.Toadbert

Possible bug[edit]

In version 1.2.4 I am able to place chests directly on top of chests I've already placed. I'd argue this is a feature, as it allows much more compact storage than would otherwise be possible. Nice when digging large quarries and getting several hundred stacks of cobblestone. -- Orthotope 05:51, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Is it real?[edit]

I'm talking about the "Bonus chest" section. I haven't played the newest snapshot yet, but... it sounds kinda strange. I know Jeb was talking about adding a "Spawn chest" feature to superflat, but is it in-game now? Please tell me 13:50, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Not yet, but it is guaranteed that it will come out in the next update. --ThingStuffObject 11:11, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes it is real I found it in tutorial mode in the castle dig down in the library then find a two block wide hole go in it then there will be a chest with all dimond tools –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (Talk) 23:11, 16 September 2012 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Are you kidding me? First of all, what "tutorial mode". Second of all, what "castle". Third of all, this clearly isn't in a normal world and therefore is pointless here. 00:57, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Large Chest Bug?[edit]

Just recently I have been unable to remove anything from the top part of any of my large chests. The small chest works just fine but when it comes to the large chest I can go to all the blocks within except for the top row. Is this happening to anyone else?

I found this happens when I'm utilizing an external monitor with my laptop. With the Minecraft window on the external, I cannot reach the top row of large chests. Also, I can not click on some of the higher UI buttons. Once I move the Minecraft window back to the laptop, everything is accessible again. Not sure if this qualifies as a bug or a glich. 04:17, 4 November 2012 (UTC) Sandy_Surge

Chest trivia[edit]

Each chest has 27 slots, big chests have twice. Each slot can hold up to 64 blocks. Each material block is 1m³. If i am calculating right, each big chest can hold up to 3456m³ of material blocks, which is as high as Koryaksky Volcano. Said space can hold 3,456,000 liters of water, or 3,456,000,000Kg of clean water (sea water is heavier), with the Caspian Sea, the greatest land-locked body of water by volume in the world, being more a little more than 22.77 times greater in volume. One cubic metre of concrete weighs 2.5 Tonnes. Typically, 1m³ of concrete is made up of 350Kg of cement, 700Kg of sand, 1,200Kg of chippings and 150 Litres of water. This way the big chest can hold about 8,640,000Kg or 8,640 Mg/Tonnes.

As exciting as that might be, I'll have to go through several large chests worth of material to build the castle/tower I'm presently working on. Point being, I don't think it translates to reality that well. 00:01, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

Chest Large[edit]

I opened up a large chest and put stuff in it. I closed it and then opened it back up. It was labeled "Chest large" and all the item icons in it were backwards. BryceDestroyer03 00:59, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Blocks Above Chests[edit]

I was playing with the Trapped Chest and I put a TNT block above it, and it opened, priming the TNT. I hadn't heard anything about TNT being one of the blocks that can put above a chest. So I looked on the Wiki and it did not appear under the list of blocks that can be placed above a chest. I have got some older versions of Minecraft saved on my computer, so I looked back and I found that this isn't the case for Beta 1.0.0 but it is for Beta 1.6, so I'm guessing it changed between Beta 1.0.0 and Beta 1.6. I didn't want to write anything on the actual page, so I put it here for someone to investigate further and then update the page.

I don't actually know if anyone has seen this before, or if its common knowledge, I haven't heard anything of it. Also when I mention "one of the blocks that can put above a chest" I mean a block that doesn't restrict the ability to open the chest.--Penguiany 14:31, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Well, TNT is a transparent block (see also: TNT glitch), and that's all you need. Putting it above a trapped chest, well now you have an(other) Interesting Minecraft Death. (You can also put it behind or beneath the chest, for the simplest possible chest trap.) --Mental Mouse 16:33, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
