Confirmation of Blue Spiders[edit]

[1] He said blue spiders are smaller than normal spiders, which means blue spiders do exist. Cool12309(T|C) 06:41, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Moved rest of this portion to Archive, please only discuss this on the Evidence Archive to avoid another huge war that blocks out any actual discussion on Blue Spiders. The only reason I left this part up is so people can see it and not instantly argue back about not having enough evidence.

Merge?[edit]

Shouldn't this thread be merged with Spider, kinda like the electrocreeper? At least, when it comes out.

no, because unlike the charged creepers the blue spider isnt a form of the spider, they are different mobs, spiders dont turn into blue spiders.--Higbey 14:33, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Blue Spider Jockeys?[edit]

Question: Does anyone think that there will be a Blue Spider Jockey? If so, then please tell me. (PS Just for fun, Blue Spider Endermen Jockeys? ULTIMATE FAIL/WIN.) --From Moi, Ajc_1254 00:25, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, this talk page is big enough even without the speculation. If you would like to discuss things like this, use the forums --HexZyle 02:52, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
EDIT: If you have ideas for the game, take it to the forums. Speculation is useless here --HexZyle 04:17, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
A hybrid of a monster that when it hurts you will suffer damage whilst being shot in the face with arrows/teleported rapidly towards? ...I'm sorry, but that is just HARDCORE written all over it. BlockBarracade 01:18, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
Nah, the Cave Spiders are much smaller than normal ones, so they probably won't have Skeletons riding them. Also, think of the cramped environment they live in. - DarkAuk 21:19, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Actually, tiny skeletons doing half damage and dropping 0-2 Bone Meals on death is a nice idea... infact, Notch should add Venom Sacks. I would add these suggestions to the Forums/Twitter, but I have neither accounts for each.BlockBarracade 23:37, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

it is actually possible but only whit a mod use spawnstack cavespider skeleton and it should spawn

ok, im new to this, but it has been confirmed that there are already cave spider jockeys, there was a picture taken of one, not sure what we need to do about it, i will upload the picture later but what should i upload it to? cave spider or spider jockey? both --1:18pm feburary 1 2012

Delete/Archive War?[edit]

Now that Jeb has confirmed blue spiders (well there is still a little skepticism) should we delete/archive the whole "war" part of the page so that we can have actual discussions about the blue spider? Also, since the page is giving the size warning. Shockman25 01:11, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

 Yes Cool12309(T|C) 01:43, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
In that case, Archived I only kept the "Confirmed" portion on so that people can see Jeb's post before starting another argument. Shockman25 02:21, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
EDIT: I added a note at the top of the page to make sure people don't flood this page with arguments just like last time. Shockman25 02:33, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
After 1.8 comes out, I'll move that section to the Evidence page. Cool12309(T|C) 02:40, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

david/x's idea[edit]

Just a random question but didnt youtuber 'x' suggest these when people asked why he stopped playing minecraft in case people are being fooled by lighting anyone that read his post would remember he suggested blue posion spiders appearing in abandoned mineshafts underground might think they are blue when they really arent? –The preceding unsigned comment was added by Desacobose (Talk|Contribs) . A letsplayer on youtube known as x or david once made a large blog post on what he wanted to see in minecraft in that post he mentions he wanted blue venomous spiders that spawned underground in mineshafts to be added to the game assuming they arent real someone could be using this as a hoax,if they are real people might be remembering this and along with the lighting in the supposed video people might be mistaking the spider for blue I. would suggest changing the name to something more to what it does like venomous spider I am not saying I think Notch stole his idea I'm just saying the name should be changed. Desacobose 18:36, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

@Jeb_ replied "Yes" to if blue spiders were smaller. (http://twitter.com/jeb_/status/109093046452367360) I would assume he would've said they weren't blue spiders if they were anything else. --{ Fishrock123 } (Talk) 19:46, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Th

Merge into Spiders[edit]

I am proposing a merge into the page spiders. remember to use: {{c|agree|I agree}}, or {{c|disagree|I disagree}}. as well as {{c|comment|blah blah}}.

so, I'll start.  Yes. I think this page should be merged into spiders. aside from poisoning ability, size and colour, it is identical. do we need a whole second page for what is a slightly modified spider that can poison? --Kizzycocoa 18:21, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

First of all, discussion doesn't include voting, so please don't encourage voting. I disagree with the merge, it's way too early to say this should be merged because there isn't enough information to have it's own page. You can't say this is "identical" and then list 3 ways that it's different. Let's let 1.8 get released and see exactly what this mob is before we start discussing merging the page. -- Wynthyst Image:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 19:36, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
@Wynthyst All you have to do is add {{c|}} around that "disagree" and you would be voting as well :P --HexZyle 02:10, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
Not until 1.8 is released. There may be more info released on how much different it is to a regular spider. Just how electrocreepers are barely different from normal creepers so they are on the same page, but giants and spider jockeys are vastly different from their regular counterparts. --HexZyle 20:01, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Disagree And skeletons are identical to zombies aside from their appearance and ability to shoot arrows. :P They're a seperate mob, they really deserve a seperate page. I mean, heck, Spider Jockeys are literally a Skeleton riding a Spider - no difference from the normal mobs (to the point that it fights itself if the skeleton hits the spider) aside from being a "combo" mob - and that has its own page. Besides, 1.8 isn't out yet, the art used at PAX could have been temporary or something. They may end up looking completely different from normal Spiders at release, who knows... --Warlock 20:16, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
DisagreeThere's no reason at all to merge this page. Like Wynthyst said, you can't say it's identical and then list 3 ways they are the same. The electrocreeper, tame/hostile wolves and neutral/hostile spiders are on the same pages because they're different states of the same mob, which this doesn't seem to be. The BS has its own spawner, spawns in its own area, has a unique size, abilities, texture, and probably health, damage and a unique reward(such as venom sacs) will probably be added. The BS will never transform into a regular spider, nor vice-versa. It'll most likely be a more powerful spider that drops something unique, the aforementioned poison sacs seem accurate here, for a reward. It's like why the Spider Jockey isn't merged with the skeleton. The skeleton doesn't just climb onto the spider(but if it did, that would be very cool). MyCraftDev
Disagree The blue spider is a different mob to the brown spider, the only real similarity is the model is the same. It doesn't change from one to the other so shouldn't be on the same page. Fummy
DisagreeDifferent mob than the normal ones, keep as is. - DarkAuk 21:20, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
CommmentThe in-game data regards them as two different entities.

Cure for poison?[edit]

i think there should be some kind of cure for the blue spider venom WolfDog98 12:45, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

What I mean is that I decided to make a new version myself, but recolor it so it looks like the current version, your's is fine though. Shockman25 21:53, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Name[edit]

Jeb called the blue spider the "Cave spider" http://twitter.com/jeb_/status/110991839804399616 Official name? Fummy 19:02, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

I've (and, doubtless, a million other people) asked him; maybe he'll confirm it for us. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:20, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
AgreeThis is the first available naming by a Mojang employee, so the article needs to be renamed. - DarkAuk 22:41, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
Agree - (See User Comment Below) With the update possibly only 24 hours away, we can check it ourselves when it comes out and save needless renames --HexZyle 01:11, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Regardless if it is a useless rename or not, this is a wiki and needs to be updated with the most recent and official names. Jeb called it a "cave spider", and although he aknowledges people call it a "blue spider" he has never said the name himself. "Blue spider" was only a placeholder until we got the correct name, which we have now. - DarkAuk 01:42, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

I have the default texture pack and NEVER see cave spiders. I also have no mods cuz I cant install them the proper way.... So maybe it's just a perk of the texture pack you're using.

P.S If your not sure if it's just a malfunction with minecraft make sure you reboot :)

New Thumbnail[edit]

I think we should probably try to get a better thumbnail of the cave spider for the mob template. The angle makes it's head block out it's body and the quality isn't as good as other ones. Shockman25 19:01, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

EDIT: I uploaded a new version with better quality, but it's at the wrong angle. It would be best to have an isometric version. Shockman25 21:24, 10 September 2011 (

Rare?[edit]

I wouldn't classify them as rare, as every abandoned shaft has four or five spawners of them at least

Nerfed in 1.8-pre-2?[edit]

I updated to the latest jar file today, and found that I was no longer poisoned for a whole 15 seconds from a single bite. It's more like five seconds now, but I haven't measured exactly.

I'll take a look, EDIT: You are right. In-fact, it looks like there have been more changes as well, I will try to update as fast as I can.Shockman25 04:05, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Nerfed more in 1.4?[edit]

Playing in 1.4 (on a server I set up, so I know it is just the latest vanilla server), I managed to fall into a swarm of 5 or 6 cave spiders, which failed to poison me even once. Has anyone else had this happen? shockthetoast 06:21, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

What difficulty is your server set to? They don't poison players on Easy. -- Orthotope 06:41, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Erk..[edit]

Can someone revert my changes? I derped. - 75.137.68.131 03:21, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Sure. EDIT: reverted. Shockman25 03:49, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Similarity to Poison Headcrabs from HL2[edit]

Kind of a reach, but I couldn't help but notice that Cave Spiders' poison works similarly to that of the Poison Headcrabs from Half-Life 2, which instantly but temporarily brings the player to the lowest unit of health without killing him. Since Notch seems to be familiar with internet pop culture, is it possible Cave Spiders were inspired at least in part by Poison Headcrabs, or is the relation too tenuous to consider? 66.31.37.172 01:52, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

A lot of games have that kind of poison. I wouldn't draw to conclusions. --Some Random Editing Guy 21:32, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Stuck in cobwebs[edit]

The wiki currently says they aren't affected by webs, and my friend said he's seen this to be true... but I've personally witnessed giant masses of cobwebs with Cave Spiders tangled up in them right next to their spawners. Is there something else causing them to get stuck or is the wiki wrong? Dazuro 20:31, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

That could be either a glitch or the spiders climbing up the webs or adjacent walls of their own volition. Cobalt32 01:52, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

They seem to frequently get stuck in small areas, make sure the area is well lit and remove all obstacles from the spawner besides cobwebs, then see what happens. Make sure that they are not actually getting stuck on their own spawner as that can happen as well. Shockman25Talk 02:03, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

How best to fight them?[edit]

I'm kinda surprised that the wiki page doesn't have any tips on how to take down the spawners. I have a really hard time eliminating the spawners (honestly, the Cave Spiders are the only mobs I really fear fighting), any suggestions? Zoythrus 15:52, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

The simplest and safest way to get to a cave spider spawner to destroy it is to use the tactical advantage provided to you by the mineshaft its self. Never forget that the name of this game is MineCraft. While any enemy can be defeated by getting a really big sword and strong armor, they can also be defeated far more easily - and safely - by crafting your environment to work for you and against them. In the case of the cave spider, while it is very small and capable of wiggling through any gap you can, and some you can't, it is still possible to arrange blocks such that you can attack it, but it can't attack you. To do so, place any solid block in in front of the opening to one of the wooden archways in the mineshaft containing the spawner to form a blockade, like so:
Top View, Side View, and Front View:
(Note: I use torches instead of fences to represent a view of the fence posts unattached to any other blocks.)
Notice that the blockade blocks are not in line with the arch. This is important, if it was in line with the arch the fence posts would attach to the block and form a solid barrier that you can't attack through. Having the block offset by one creates a small diagonal gap through which you can still hit the cave spider, but the spider - If You Stand Far Back Enough - can not bite you. Do Not Use Fence Posts, as this will create a diagonal gap wide enough for one cave spider to shove another cave spider through.
You can now attack the cave spiders without them being able to return the favor, allowing you to kill them faster than the spawner can breed them.Once you've finished off all the cave spiders on the other side of the blockade, move up to it and place two more blocks on the far side of the archway in mirror fashion to the current set up. You can now remove the first set of blocks as the second set will keep the spiders from you. Dart back and kill the few that will have spawned while you did this, then move forward again and block off the next archway leading to the spawner. Progress in this manner until you are able to reach the spawner and destroy it.--7OO Tnega Terces 23:46, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Progression Down Mineshaft (Top View):
(Note: Each previous blockade would be destroyed after the next one is built.)
Block off every passages to the spawner and dig around it.
For destroying it? Dig up to directly above the spawner, poke a hole in the ceiling, pour lava into it while destroying the spawner.--Neil2250 13:53, 16 October 2011 (UTC) This will not work, lava doesn't destroy spawners. --7OO Tnega Terces 23:46, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Build a wall 1 block in front of the spawner. Light up your side of the wall, then dig the block of the wall that the spawner is leaning up against. Destroy the spawner through that gap. No spiders should spawn on your side of the wall because it is bright (note i haven't tried this myself, just came up with it then.

--HexZyle 00:07, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Cave spider farm[edit]

Due to the fact that cave spiders cannot pass trough two open doors (like shown in the screenshot), it is possible to make secure entrances to spawners and to drown efficiently. This is very useful if one plans to make a farm with 3 cave spider spawners, that share one point within a radius of 16 blocks, whitch might occour.

2 text speak against each other[edit]

at the text it says that the venom lasts 5 sec, but at the right (the information about the cave spider) the say that the venom lasts 10 sec. whats right and what not?

In the article, Poecilotheria metallica is mentioned but there are some other blue species as well, such as Haplopelma lividum Mr0 22:51, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

xp farming efficiency[edit]

Hello, fellow minecrafters. How about some numbers, what's the xp dropped by one cave spider? Will their xp farm produce more mobs than regular spider spawner one, given the same area and height? (regular ones require 2x2x2, which is more likely to collide with walls and ceiling if crossing the spawn parallelepiped) What's their preferred height - do they need the same 2 high clear spots?

I'm just thinking if I'd better build a normal spider farm of search for some abandoned mine shaft ;) –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 46.201.246.52 (Talk) 16:45, 1 March 2012 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

The 'History' Section[edit]

I dont really think we should have that there. it dosnt have any information that directly relates to cave spiders Blaxout1213 05:06, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

This is the destination for "Poison"?[edit]

The redirect for Poison leads to Cave Spider#Venom, which header I had removed. I've put it back, but really, that needs a better place. Perhaps Status effect#Parameters, since we don't have anchors in the table there? --Mental Mouse 22:26, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
