Bottom texture[edit]

The tree crosscut texture is visible from the bottom, so it isn't unused –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (Talk) 22:11, 23 July 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Better image needed[edit]

Can we get a better visual on the cactus hallway? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (Talk) 19:36, 18 July 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Double drop?[edit]

Do they sometimes give 2 blocks anymore? I broke mine for probably about 5 minutes, and they never broke into 2. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (Talk) 23:59, 19 July 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

They've never given 2 blocks. –User:Ultradude25 (User:Ultradude25/t|User:Ultradude25/c) 17:21, 6 November 2010 (CDT)

Does the cactus grow if mined then re-planted? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (Talk) 21:09, 25 July 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

I've tried making two separate pieces grow, one of them with a water source close by, for more than an hour. Nothing have happened. This WAS in a winter environment, but under a glass roof, though. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (Talk) 20:27, 26 July 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
Yes; this is the basis behind cactus farms. A cactus block, anywhere, on another cactus block or on sand and with a free space of air above it, will at some point grow another cactus block above it, unless the cactus plant (the stack of blocks) is already three blocks high. AwesomeMan31415926 (profile|contribs)

Where do i find cactus? I like in a wooded area but cant find any. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Jwebe (Talk|Contribs) 14:29, 5 November 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Cactus generates naturally in desert biomes. AwesomeMan31415926 (profile|contribs) 11:38, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Picture needs to be updated[edit]

This image (Media:Cactus.png) needs to be updated to the new Cactus graphics. I'd do it myself but I don't know how it's actually made. If it's just a screenshot in MC edited in Photoshop, I can do that. –User:Ultradude25 (User:Ultradude25/t|User:Ultradude25/c) 08:28, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Taken care of. Dissident 20:30, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Can someone remove the cross-hair? --Katnipz 23:27, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
I didn't bother because I thought it would be a pain; didn't know the crosshair just inverted the colors. Also done. Dissident 03:13, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Could I ask though, how do you make it? Is it just cut out with Photoshop? –User:Ultradude25 (User:Ultradude25/t|User:Ultradude25/c) 06:42, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I used the polygonal lasso since everything has nice hard edges and cut out the cactus. Then you magic wand the crosshair and invert (ctrl + I), and that's it. Dissident 15:50, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks again. :) –User:Ultradude25 (User:Ultradude25/t|User:Ultradude25/c) 01:36, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

I found a 4-5 block tall cactus in a desert biome[edit]

Do they grow that big now? I have a cactus farm that's growing, and I see if I get any that grow big. Captain Crazy 15:46, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

I have also noticed this. Nbord –The preceding undated comment was added on 20:48, 31 October 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
I'm pretty sure they can generate bigger than you can grow them, like reeds. –User:Ultradude25 (User:Ultradude25/t|User:Ultradude25/c) 10:13, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
I saw a naturally occurring 6 block tall cactus shortly after surface lava pools were added. dorrax –The preceding undated comment was added on 03:44, 26 January 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
It hasn't got s**t on this one, Heh. --{{static link|Datadanne|Datadanne}} 21:41, 10 February 2011

Damage bug[edit]

Is anyone else getting this bug when they touch Cacti? –User:Ultradude25 (User:Ultradude25/t|User:Ultradude25/c) 17:21, 6 November 2010 (CDT)

That's not a bug, cacti really do hurt! -- Scrapz –The preceding undated comment was added on 02:27, 8 November 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
SIGH.... The fact that they are damaging isn't the bug! It's the way they are damaging, they shouldn't be hurting me 100 times a second which results in it spamming the hurt sound and spazzing the screen out. –User:Ultradude25 (User:Ultradude25/t|User:Ultradude25/c) 21:23, 7 November 2010 (CST)

Snow Map[edit]

Since snow maps no longer exist and cactus don't generate in snow biomes, should we take out the part about the snow stopping growth? --GLaDOSexe 15:31, 7 November 2010 (CST)

You can still plant a cactus in a snow biome, right? I haven't tried, but I'd imagine it'd have the same effect -- Scrapz –The preceding undated comment was added on 02:29, 8 November 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
Since snow biomes don't regenerate snow unlike snow maps its no longer relevant --MLegion 11:17, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

Cactus floor? Impossible?[edit]

The article mentions about using cactus as a floor: This is also true if the cactus forms a floor: both players and mobs take half a heart of damage when they walk on a cactus block. This makes it useful for traps, such as a hallway with a cactus block floor, which will quickly kill any mobs that walk on it.

But later on, it also says that cacti can only be placed on sand or other cactus blocks with no horizontally or vertically adjacent blocks. If we can't place cactus adjacent to another block, then we can't make cactus floor (unless it's a checkerboard of deep holes and cactus).

Is this from an older Alpha version? Should that text be updated or removed? --CrazyTerabyte 02:49, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Yup. I've read somewhere where we used to be able to place them in a row. It was later updated this way to prevent abuse, I think. --Scykei 02:07, 14 November 2010 (CST)
You can make a floor, just put some water on the floor and then replace water blocks with cactus, I have tested this in SMP. --TK009 17:18, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Cactus Growth/Timing[edit]

Anyone know if the cactus growth speed is random? or is it a set time?
I rigged up 3 cacti to trigger pressure plates when they "cut themselves" timed how long it took for all plates to be activated. It took 10 minutes +30 seconds worth of cactus being pushed along water to the plates.
Its a better alternative if your want a much longer timer, and you don't want to fill up your server with redstone pulsers. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by ThePengu (Talk|Contribs) 00:04, 18 January 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

I tested it by editing in 1152 cactus with MCedit and watched how long it took for the first and the last one to grow from a hight of one block to a hight of two blocks. The first one had grown after two minutes and de last one after 11 minutes. This is a big difference of grown rate, but it might be of use with a BUD-switch to great a random code

(I tested this in minecraft 1.8.1) –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Fibonatic (Talk|Contribs) 18:30, 3 November 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Spider Climbing[edit]

Is it possible for spiders to climb cactus? It seems unlikely, but I want to be sure. Cub326 00:34, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, they can. I made myself a nice cacti fence and they still climb over it, but they take damage. --Danny Ufonek 11:30, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Cactus surviving in lava[edit]

Cactus seem to survive will being surrounded by lava. When I creates a lava cascade, cactus that were growing at the bottom were not affected by the lava flowing around them. Anyone also witnessed this? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Jrjoubert (Talk|Contribs) 21:29, 4 February 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Oh,cool,I never noticed that. Do you think cactus will survive in water?--Cr@zy4mus1c 01:07, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
Cactus can survive in water. Every solid block survives in water, and only flammable things are destroyed by lava (except snow and ice, they just melt). JesusChrist666 01:10, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

2 Cactus's ``no-goods``[edit]

No-good n.1: 2 cactus can't be placed like that:

they have to be placed like this:

cactus1 cactus2

No-good n.2: cactus have to be placed on sand. --Cr@zy4mus1c 01:07, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

Spawning on Cacti[edit]

This is listed on the page as possible, but it seems like notch probably added a check for it. Can we get a *valid* 1.3 video of this happening? With the seed, too. Darkid 01:55, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Since spawn points are not dictated by seeds, a seed would be pointless. --{ Fishrock123 } (Talk) 02:16, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
That's news to me, every time i've reloaded a seed it maintains the same spawn. Is it dictated by world name? Darkid 03:23, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Cacti on Clay[edit]

Can we have a pic of that? we have examples of everything else about cacti –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Mick666 (Talk|Contribs) 04:54, 8 April 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

You cannot place a cacti on clay block. I also don't think that bug like this occurs. --MateWushu 18:30, 01 July 2011 (UTC)
Actually I don't know if this is hacked or not but I did find a picture of one on clay. If someone can verify this is real. [1] Also, I was not able to put the picture in the gallery. If someone could tell me or direct me to a page that would tell me how to put up image files, that would be great. ~Puzzlepro97~

6 tall Cactus[edit]

I found a 6 units tall Cactus in the 'google' seed. I took a screenshot of it. I promise you that I did not touch it in any way to make it 6 tall, it's as I found it. How can I get the screenshot to you guys? Sadron 00:31, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

I also found one with the seed "42" (Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy joke) but seriously, It was way East of the spawn, I just put the screen on the page. Nevumx 01:05, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Floating Cactus, I beg to differ![edit]

here is an image taken in single player beta 1.6.6 I can easily walk around and under it. the bottom does not hurt you. [2]--King llama 01:18, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Five blocks tall cactus.[edit]

I've just found a 5 blocks tall cacti. It's not manipulated in any way. I know this pic isn't so good so i'll try to take a better one.-- PS. Sry for bad english ;).MateWushu 18:09, 01 July 2011 (UTC)

Make screenshot at daytime, use fancy graphics, far fog, smooth lighting on, don't use any texturepacks, hide the HUD using F1 then press F2 to make the screenshot. Then the screenshot will be good. Calinou - talk × contribs » 18:09, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
I have uploaded a new, better picture. Thanks for help Calinou. MateWushu 18:47, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
I also found a 5 blocks tall cactus, you wana picture of that too?
PS. Sry for bad location... –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Est000dog (Talk|Contribs) 11:37, 3 July 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~

seed "Sharpie"[edit]

  1. The coordinates are -171, 80, 52
  2. There is no six block tall cactus! (March: {{static link|:File:SharpieCactus.png}}, July: {{static link|:File:SharpieCactus2.png}}). Maybe fixed?-- Oliver Scholz de.Wiki Admin 14:59, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Version 1.9 Pre-release 3 - No Cactus Farm Drops[edit]

Pre-releases aren't "canon" per se, but in this version, I have yet to see a cactus farm produce drops. Can anyone confirm or deny this? ~ Nonsanity 03:24, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Cactus don't seem to be growing at all for me. FatherToast 06:10, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Contradiction on page[edit]

the first line says "Cacti grow only on Sand to a maximum height of three blocks, though higher stacks can be placed by the player" but in the images section, it says that its a "natural stack of 4" how is this possible?????????????? Maxwell the scribblenaut 22:08, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

On World Generation, stacks of 4 cactus may be made. However, when placed by the player, cactus will not grow above 3. Harrison 22:26, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

"When Endermen pick cactus blocks, they don't usually pick the bottom block; they "pollinate" it. "

What the catnip does that mean? --StarChaser Tyger 13:12, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

They don't take the bottom block they take the one above it and put it down somewhere else, (it has to be sand) so that the piece they took (and then placed) will grow again, effectively spreading cacti night by night, (provided they pick up a cactus block)" –Preceding unsigned comment was added by (Talk) 19:45, 9 June 2012. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
Ah. I'd call that 'spread', not pollinate. Pollination is plant sex (bom chicka wow wow), male flowers make pollen and female ones pick it up. RL cacti have flowers, but pretty sure MC ones don't. --StarChaser Tyger 13:30, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Cactus generating on top of another cactus[edit]

Is that how they become more than 3 blocks tall on world generation? HotdogPi Come to my page! 10:39, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Excellent question. Proving it would require stepping through the world generation in a debugger, but it certainly looks possible. In 1.2.5, WorldGenCactus only checks for an air space and BlockCactus.canBlockStay() (i.e., is it above sand or another cactus); it doesn't care about how tall the stack is. WorldGenReed is similar, but checks for adjacent water, which should prevent stacks over 3 blocks tall from generating. -- Orthotope 11:47, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Distance from cacti to grow?[edit]

What's the distance from the cacti that a player needs to be so that cacti will keep growing? The condition of cacti being in a loaded chunk is not enough for them to grow. The player needs to be close, but how close? 15:22, 22 April 2013 (UTC) purple

They can grow as long as they chunk they are in is loaded and updating. There is nothing in the code for cacti that checks for the presence or distance to a player. -- Orthotope 18:50, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
I can't confirm this. I made a vertical 4 x 4 cacti farm (with water streams, one hopper and a chest) close to the edge of loaded chunks when I'm at my warehouse (also close to the inside of the edge of spawn chunks). I was afk for hours and not a single cactus block was found in the chest. If I stay near it, cacti slowly grow and fill the chest. So after reading your reply I thought maybe hoppers stop working when the player is far. I planted 8 cacti outside the farm and went to my warehouse, made a pillar to be able to watch the cacti and after 45 minutes none has grown. Maybe an unnoticed change in the code in the latest version (1.5.1)? Could tiny render distance be an issue? 20:19, 23 April 2013 (UTC) purple
Kinda late, but: Quite likely, IIRC single-player render distance does affect chunk loading (which it shouldn't, but that's another story). In any case, your farm is clearly on the wrong side of that edge from where you're hanging out. --Mental Mouse 20:19, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Way to make it not give damage?[edit]

Is there a way to make the cactus not give damage (e.g. for decoration)? Thanks!--Sambam124 22:26, 17 August 2013 (UTC)

Pop it in a plant pot or item frame, or make it so you can't reach it. Or raise it 1 block from the ground and have a 2 high ceiling. MinecraftPhotos4U 19:55, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
