Separate section for console[edit]

Could we please keep the separate section for console-only achievements? Also, editing restriction? What's going on? —Fenhl 00:28, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

Fenhl: MCW:admin noticeboard/Archive 24#Editing/behavioral restrictions on Pocket Edition Alpha 0.12.0 and User talk:Wolffillms#Interaction ban. –LauraFi - talk 00:43, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
I see. Any opinions on the content? I feel like having the subsection makes the article more readable. —Fenhl 01:05, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
 Agree. –LauraFi - talk 01:16, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
Pinging BDJP007301, since he is the main advocate against it.
Neutral: It does seem a bit neater having it separated, but I feel like it has the purpose of separating out non-PC content rather than exclusive content, as most of the achievements also are on the Windows 10 edition. So sorting it does make the PC edition easier to navigate, but I feel it could make the rest harder, especially since the sorting feature of all achievements is lost. KnightMiner t/c 02:17, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
Disagree per the latter half of Knight's comment. My original revert occurred on November 29th of last year, almost six hours before the interaction ban went into effect against both myself and Wolf. Wolf then abruptly reverted my edit just over a month later, which in turn, technically violated the editing restriction against him. I questioned Orthotope about that particular revert, but as of now, have gotten no response from him. Being bold, I decided to revert Wolf's edit in risk of a block, as again, Wolf's revert technically violated his editing restriction. -BDJP (t|c) 02:37, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
Oppose There is already a column for what version the achievement applies to, and it would be easy enough to [minecraft.gamepedia.com/Template:Load_achievements?action=edit edit the template so that it you can split the table].? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Blobs2 (talkcontribs) at 3:40, 12 January 2016 (UTC). It would make much more sense to not have a "version restriction" column when almost all achievements are in all of the major editions, and instead have a seperate section for the Console/Windows 10 exclusive achievements for easier reading and better marking exclusiveness. Wolffillms (talk) 23:38, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
I  Agree for a seperate section marking Console/Windows 10 Edition exclusive achievements, as per Minecraft Wiki:Projects/Highlighting Edition-Specific Information all Editon exclusive information should be highlighted as being exclusive for easier reading of pages. Wolffillms (talk) 23:38, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
Your idea would basically make the version availability on mobs go caput. -BDJP (t|c) 01:49, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
Are you making an analogy? What is the connection from this page to the mob page? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 04:33, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
Alternate idea: rather than use the current 'version restriction' column, use four yes/no columns: a PC column, an XBox column, a PS column, and a Win10 column. Then within the same table you could sort those columns to find all the desired edition-specific achievements? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 15:42, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
 Agree with Sealbud's idea. -BDJP (t|c) 18:37, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
Something like this? I would  Agree to that, though it does become a bit bulky. it might be worth dropping a few of the other columns from the overall template to make a bit more room (not sure which though, it is all rather useful information) KnightMiner t/c 22:13, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
I like that mockup. I made some syntax corrections to it (apologies for stepping into your sandbox, I felt like it was okay since it was a piece of code under discussion ..?), but there remains an issue with xbox points not showing in the second cell of split rows.
I don't think this table is that clunky, at least no more than the original. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 15:59, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
I just noticed there's a problem with sorting that maybe we ought to try to overcome. Try this: sort by Win 10 column, look at 'Adventuring Time' within the Win 10 'yes' block. It shows a red 'no' by the PC. That's technically exactly the cell you should expect, of course. But what if a user, through misinterpreting that 'no', interprets it to mean that 'Adventuring Time' isn't available on the PC? The other 'Adventuring Time' isn't readily available to compare. Maybe sorting inherently leads to this problem, or maybe this can be overcome? Perhaps instead of showing 'no', show ... some other red-colored word that clearly communicates what is going on.
Secondly and more minor, I noticed that after sorting columns (clicking headers), it gets rid of those nice rowspanned cells. That's just an artifact of the sortable table not having a way to return to its original sort order, right? Is this something we could overcome or is it too much bother? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 16:31, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
It's fine that you edited my sandbox, that is what it's here for (hence the line at the top of my sandbox)
The rowspan stuff is a side effect of the sorting, yes. In order to separately sort the two different possible values, it just splits them into two separate rows. I don't believe there is any easy way to overcome it, because keeping them together disables sorting between the two values
As for the "split in two" ones, I am not really sure what word to use there instead of "No" as there is not a lot of space for a full reason, though I did try a title just now on my sandbox like so: No? I applied that to the table. KnightMiner t/c 17:13, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Oh I see the note now. The rowspan stuff, I'm sure it'll be fine then.
I think the title is a good direction. By the time a person is looking closely at a line to see which editions don't 'Adventuring Time', they'll probably notice the note. In case the dotted underline is too subtle, maybe the cell should be reddish-orange? Is that too visually busy?
Also I notice that 'Monster Hunter' and 'Leader of the Pack' at least don't have different requirements, they're split only because of XBox points. How about, more generically, something like 'Available but in a slightly different form'? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 17:52, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
A reddish orange could work, though there are not a lot of distinctive colors left between red and yellow, so maybe I can leave the note the same color and switch the normal "no"'s color to something like "never" from {{tc}}? I don't think it will be busy as much as very common though, but it could work. If we are changing the color though, I really should try and come up with a better word, to make it more clearly distinctive.
I'll try tweaking the note a bit when I adjust the colors, but I would like to get a few more comments on the design (and hopefully a better word for the "Yes, but different" than "No"). KnightMiner t/c 23:44, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Tweaked the note a bit and switched the Win10 header to Pocket (I really don't feel it is needed to spam "in win10, upcoming pocket" everywhere, but if someone else thinks it is needed, I can do that). I also switched the color to an orange now, so opinions on the busyness? (note there also is a blue color not used which is for upcoming achievements, replacing the old upcoming parameter. Just set any version parameter to "upcoming" on the edit preview to compare it in the busyness) KnightMiner t/c 01:54, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
My thought is, even though it's kind of a nonstandard mcwiki table color, once you know what orange means, it works. So I lightened it to try to match the paleness of the red and green; it seemed a little vibrant before. It kinda still does; I may even try #FDE0B2.
I want to try the word "Alt" and change the language to say "Available in an alternate form."
One question: is it possible, when you sort the column, to have the orange cells always group between the yellow and the red cells? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 15:44, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
Agree with this idea. –LauraFi - talk 14:28, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

PS3 achievements coming from expansion packs[edit]

So, per the question raised at Talk:Ocelot#Achievement/Trophy list, and considering this source detailing the PS3 achievements and which ones can be gotten with which expansion packs, is there a good way to notate this in our achievement tables? Is it as simple as changing a few 'PS4' cells to 'Yes', or because this is DLC, is there more to consider? I'm not familiar with how the console and DLC work. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 17:38, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

It is strange that it states them as expansion packs that are free, considering that is exactly how updates work, but since it is kept separate it might be best to write it as "PS4/PS3 DLC1" or something similar, then have a section below describing it. –KnightMiner t/c 22:48, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
Feel free to put the note in if you want to; I may not get to it for some time. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 21:45, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

So are there any special particular values to each of the Wii achievements, equivalent to like the trophy level on the playstation, or xbox points? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 20:50, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
No, there aren't, as far as I'm aware of. -BDJP (t|c) 21:03, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
I took a look at the template; and I think I might leave it to KnightMiner to take a swing at. Can't set aside the time for an operation like this I don't think. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 20:53, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
I've added the column and did my best to convert that list into the table. @BDJP007301: Can you double check that I added the achievments to the table correctly? Your list is long and sorted a bit differently than the article list, so I may have missed something. –KnightMiner t/c 04:05, 9 April 2016 (UTC)
It's all good, except for the following that you missed, which I've fixed:
Leader of the Pack, MOAR Tools, Dispense With This, Pork Chop, Passing the Time, and Archer.

Yes, whatever, this achievement/advancement stuff is getting very confusing :/ — Nixinova (talkeditspages) 19:48, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
The table doesn't seem to want to shrink down past about 1240px wide. Column widths are shrunk down to the width of the "largest word", then they don't get smaller, and there are so many columns, it all adds up. On the up-side, once 1.12 gets released, 3 columns go away, and minumum-width comes down to about 800px. That might be nice. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 20:08, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
It should also be noted that you can simply scroll to see the rest of the table. Not ideal, but it's not inaccessible. MajrTalk

1.12[edit]

PepijnMC, we don't like the history section mentioning the pc achievements that turned into advancements? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 14:21, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

I don't think it's something that belongs in the history section, but that could be just me. If you really think it belongs there you can put it back and I won't touch it anymore. --Pepijn (talk) 14:23, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
Hmmmm, I don't know where it would better belong... It seemed like at least the equivalent one were worth pointing out, what do you think – Sealbudsman talk/contr 14:29, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
I added them to Advancements#Trivia, which I think is a good place for them. --Pepijn (talk) 20:35, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
I see; not a bad place either I think. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 22:09, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

List of Achievements Table, previous versions[edit]

I was just trying to determine which achievements were not added as advancements into 1.12, but that is not listed as trivia on the advancements page, and it is not accessible from the achievements page. What's worse is that viewing a previous version of the achievements page shows the current version of the list of achievements table, not the version that was available at the time. For example, there is no reason for the PC achievements to be missing back in March, when advancements were being hinted at and only recently put into snapshots. NickNackGus (talk) 01:59, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Replied at Talk:Advancements. This illustrates a flaw with MediaWiki: if you view an old version of a page, it still uses the latest version of any templates on that page. Since the table is made with a template, it no longer shows PC edition information on any old version. -- Orthotopetalk 02:36, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

The redirects to achievements that are also advancements[edit]

Also to do that, {{advancements}} would have to set an {{anchor}} for each of its entries, like {{achievements}} does. I won't have time these coming weeks or months -- someone else feel free! – Sealbudsman talk/contr 16:29, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Console mechanics[edit]

Nintendo Console Editions

For WiiU and Switch, there is no 'global' achievement system, is that correct? On those systems, are they earned per-world like Java advancements, or per-account, or per-edition like Xbox Live and PSN? And if so, what is that account known as? Can those achievements be reset in any way? Are those achievemets broadcast to chat?

PSN Console Editions

For Playstation, same questions: are they earned per-world or per-account or per-edition? Are those achievements broadcast to chat?

Sealbudsman talk/contr 06:35, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

BDJP007301, do you have CE still, and would you be able to figure out how it works on Nintendo consoles? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 12:25, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
Yes; I have the Nintendo Console Editions. AFAIK, there is no global achievement system in place on either console. Achievements are earned per-account; on Wii U, it is known as a Nintendo Network ID or just simply a username. On Switch, it is known as a Nintendo Account or just simply a username. There is no option to reset the achievements on either console, and achievements are not broadcast to chat at all. -BDJP (t|c) 15:45, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
Ah. Is there the possibility, like in Pocket / Windows 10, to play the game while not logged in, and simply not earn achievements? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 16:26, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
You are allowed to make multiple accounts on either console. However, they do not have to be linked to a Nintendo Network ID or a Nintendo Account. I tested it on a friend's Switch, and you can still get achievements even if the account is not linked to either. -BDJP (t|c) 17:13, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
Ah. So it can be linked to a Nintendo Network ID or a Nintendo Account, or not. Can you play the game without an account at all? And if so, can you earn achievements in that scenario? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 17:44, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
No and no. -BDJP (t|c) 18:00, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
Two more questions: are achievements earned using your NNID visible on any console where you use that same NNID? Do achievements earned on Switch show as being earned on Wii U, if it's on the same NNID? Sorry if these are silly questions, Im just very unfamiliar with how consoles work – Sealbudsman talk/contr 21:14, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
Not that I'm sure of and no. -BDJP (t|c) 21:29, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

Nintendo editions[edit]

Any reason the Nintendo editions are separate in the table? I originally designed the editions switch to support keeping same system together, like is done with PlayStation and Xbox, so it would really make sense to have The two nintendo editions combined as Nintendo and use the partial feature to denote "Switch only" or "Wii U only". KnightMiner t/c 23:00, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

 Done. -BDJP (t|c) 23:22, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

Where to get the images[edit]

LevitatingSheep, where is a good place to get the achievement images? I tried looking in the .apk file from my Android version, but either it wasn't there or I missed it. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 12:27, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

Well I got 'em from xboxachievements.com
Btw, I checked the xbox one edition and the pocket edition and a few of the images appear different(which can be seen in the sprite sheet as I uploaded the different version from PE as well as the normal versions) and I was thinking that it'd should probably be added to the achievements page, somehow. Not sure how though. What do you suggest? LevitatingSheep (talk) 14:19, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
From my thought, I don't know if that possible though, to make rotating images within a sprite, perhaps using the {{animate}} or the <slideBoxLightShow>? Meanwhile the Achievements and Marketplace assets are stored in their server, so I don't know also where the original image is. – ItsPlantseed|⟩ 09:23, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Bedrock has different text as compared to table[edit]

When reviewing all achievements on Bedrock, I see that some of the achievements have different texts, and before I change that I would like for someone to verify if the text is different on the other editions. The texts which are currently different on Bedrock are as follows:

  • When Pigs Fly – Use a saddle to ride a pig, and then have the pig get hurt from fall damage while riding it.
  • Into The Nether – Construct a Nether Portal
  • Enchanter – Construct an enchantment table
  • MOAR Tools – Construct one type of each tool
  • Tie Dye Outfit – Use a cauldron to dye all 4 unique pieces of leather armor.

In addition the Xbox points earned for The Lie is only 30G on Bedrock, not 40G. Can someone check if these changes should make it onto the page? Holroy talkcontribs 20:50, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

The current descriptions were originally from Java, which no longer has Achievements, but you can't just replace them because most are still used in Legacy Console editions (although somebody ought to update them because I don't think LCE was always exactly the same as Java). You could use split rows in cases where there are important differences (as we have in some, e.g. Beaconator), but I'd advise doing that only where the difference is in a meaning, not just trivial wording; otherwise it might make the page messy for no good reason.
As far as the points for "The Lie", I believe it's 40G on LCE and 30G on Bedrock, so that would be a case where you need a split row. – Auldrick (talk · contribs) 23:01, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
I kind of understand how the split works, but not entirely confident in doing that point change split, could you help out so that I could see how it's done? Regarding the wording, given that Bedrock is the one being updated (the most) would it be bad to change the wording to match that (especially since Java doesn't use this anymore)? Holroy talkcontribs 01:04, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
I didn't realize that the cell splitting was built into the template. (The template documentation is also out of date. Dang programmers who don't update the documentation!!) I have fixed the Xbox points problem for The Lie. You can use the same method for the description field if you want to. Here's an example:
{{Achievements
 |title=The Lie
 |Wheat, sugar, milk, and eggs!\Bake a cake using: wheat, sugar, milk, and eggs
 |Pick up a [[cake]] from a [[crafting table]] output.
 |xbox=yes\no
 |ps=yes\no
 |nintendo=yes\no
 |pocket=no\yes
 |40G\30G
 |Silver
}}
and it would come out like this:
Icon Achievement In-game description Actual requirements (if different) Availability Xbox points earned Trophy type (PS)
Xbox PS Bedrock Nintendo
The LieWheat, sugar, milk, and eggs!Pick up a cake from a crafting table output.YesYesAltYes40GSilver
Bake a cake using: wheat, sugar, milk, and eggsAltAltYesAlt30G
Basically, for each cell you want to split, set the corresponding parameter value to the top and bottom values, separated by \ (not /). Since you're considering showing different descriptions for different platforms, you'd do this for the first unnamed parameter, which is the description. Then, to split the platform cells, you'd also need to insert the xbox=, ps=, pocket=, and nintendo= parameters if they're missing, because otherwise they'll all default to Yes in an unsplit cell. If you have any trouble getting it to work the way you intend, I'll be happy to help. – Auldrick (talk · contribs) 02:06, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
I forgot to address your second question. As long as the meaning is the same, either description would be equally acceptable as a general rule. But we try not to show favoritism toward one edition over another, and replacing the LCE description with the Bedrock one because "Bedrock is the one being updated (the most)" is clear favoritism in my view, whereas leaving the status quo isn't since it was there all along. (It's an act of commission versus an act of omission, if you're familiar with that philosophical distinction. Acts of commission are normally regarded as exhibiting a higher degree of intent.) It's a subtle distinction that other people have disagreed with me on, so you might like to seek consensus from others. – Auldrick (talk · contribs) 02:58, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
