Striders are dinosaur-like passive mobs native to the Nether. They can walk/stride on lava and be saddled by the player. A warped fungus on a stick is needed to control a strider, similar to how a pig is controlled by a carrot on a stick.

Spawning
Striders can spawn in every Nether biome. Two to four striders spawn on spaces of lava that have an air block above. Java striders are the only passive mob in the Nether, so spawning attempts are made every 400 game ticks. Bedrock striders share the animal population cap with hoglins and their spawn rate depends on biome, being impacted by the ability of other mobs to spawn at a given coordinate.
In the Nether, two to four striders spawn on spaces of lava that are two blocks tall with an air block above. Because striders are passive mobs, spawning attempts are made every 400 game ticks. For every strider that spawns, there is a 1 in 10 chance of an additional baby strider to spawn riding on top of the previous strider. A baby strider on the adult strider continues to grow although it does not dismount the adult strider once it has grown up. Zombified piglins have a 1 in 30 chance of spawning on top of a strider, creating a strider jockey. If this happens, the strider spawns with a saddle, and the zombified piglin spawns carrying a warped fungus on a stick, meaning that strider jockeys are controlled by zombified piglins. The zombified piglin also does not despawn (except on Peaceful difficulty).

For every strider that spawns, there is a 1 in 10 chance of an additional baby strider to spawn riding on top of the previous strider. This behavior is limited to one strider. A baby strider on the adult strider continues to grow although it does not dismount the adult strider once it has grown up.

Zombified piglins have a 1 in 30 chance of spawning on top of a strider. If this happens, the strider spawns with a saddle and the zombified piglin spawns carrying a warped fungus on a stick. The zombified piglin does not despawn naturally, and does not count towards the mob cap. On Peaceful difficulty, the zombified piglin despawns immediately, leaving a saddled strider.
  +
  +
If a strider spawns under lava, it rises out of the lava. Bedrock, baby striders spawn more commonly than adult striders do, including when spawned by a spawn egg.

bedrock, adult striders drop 2–5 string upon death, unaffected by Looting.

A strider with a player-equipped saddle drops the saddle upon death. If a strider spawns wearing a saddle, the saddle has an 8.5% chance to drop, increased by 1% per level of Looting. bedrock, striders spawned wearing a saddle always drop the saddle.
+
Striders wearing a saddle always drop the saddle upon death, regardless of if they spawn wearing it or if a player puts it on them. The only way to remove a saddle from a strider is to kill the strider. When an adult strider is killed by a player or tamed wolf, 1 / 1 experience is dropped.

Behavior
Behavior
  +
Lava does not damage striders. Unlike most mobs, striders can walk on top of lava without sinking. Upon being harmed by another mob, striders attempt to flee for a few seconds while making "retreat" noises. Striders are damaged by water, rain, and splash water bottles, which deal damage by 1 per splash water bottle or half-second in water or rain, which can kill them. While in water, they slowly sink while taking damage. Striders still take damage from rain even if they are in lava. However, they are not harmed when standing in a filled cauldron. They also cannot be harmed by snowfall or snowballs. They take extra damage from freezing in powder snow.
Unlike most mobs, striders can walk on lava. If the strider has the Speed effect applied to it, it moves faster on both land and lava, although its speed over land is still considerably slower.

Striders outside of lava change to a purple color, change their expression to more of a frown, and shiver. They also move slower when outside of lava.

  +
Unlike piglins and hoglins, striders can exist safely in the Overworld, as long as they are kept away from water and rain. Unlike some other mobs, striders do not zombify when leaving the Nether. Striders outside of lava change to a dull purple color, change their expression to more of a frown, shiver, and their legs become slightly shorter. They also move slower when outside of lava.

Due to a bug, striders that fall from a height take fall damage when landing in lava.

A baby strider on an adult strider still grows into an adult. Adult striders riding other adult striders do not spawn naturally. Baby striders not walking on an adult follow the closest adult strider.

The player can ride on an adult strider using a saddle and can attach them to leads. Similar to how pigs are controlled using a carrot on a stick, striders move forward automatically while their direction is influenced using a warped fungus on a stick, at a speed of 4.14 m/s if on a flat lava surface (such as the Nether lava sea) or 1.74 m/s if on land. Striders move much more slowly in flowing lava than on land.speed in m/s? They swim especially slowly against the lava flow direction.

Warped fungus on a stick can be used, causing the strider to boost and walk at a greater speedspeed in m/s? and taking 1 point of durability from the warped fungus on a stick. They also follow players holding a warped fungus or a warped fungus on a stick. java, saddled striders being ridden by players never move on their own accord (when not seeking lava within around 10 seconds) unless being directed. bedrock, striders wander around freely when ridden by a player not directing it. Once in lava and unmounted, striders actively seek lava or wander around when not seeking lava.

Players riding striders into (flowing-only due to a bug ) lava from heights do not dismount if the strider submerges into the lava, and striders quickly rise back up to the surface if this happens. However, players risk getting burned by the lava while submerged.

Unlike underwater boat, players riding striders into lava (for example, getiing into flowing-only from heights or horizons, static lava from horizons) do not dismount if the strider submerges into the lava, and striders quickly rise back up to the surface if this happens. However, players risk getting burned by the lava while submerged. However, java, players cannot start riding a strider that is fully submeged within the lava.

A strider ridden into flowing lava slowly rises to the top. Fall damage does not affect striders that have dropped onto flowing lava, unlike the bug for lava source blocks.
+
A strider ridden into flowing lava slowly rises to the top. Fall damage does not affect striders that have dropped onto flowing lava, unlike the bug for lava source blocks. When ridden over land, striders automatically walk up any one block high slope. They also cross any 1-wide block gap or air space that is only one block higher - diagonally up - when ridden directly upward and not completely sideways to the slope.

  +
To safely dismount from a strider, a player who does not have fire resistance may face a solid block within reach before dismounting to dismount onto that block, instead of at the strider's location (which is usually in lava).

Striders can still be equipped with a saddle while another mob is riding it.
When being ridden (by a player, zombified piglin or another strider), a strider is not attracted to warped fungus outside it. Whether held, or warped fungus on a stick of another player, or else placed. Even if not being directed by a warped fungus on a stick, of the rider.

Latest revision as of 01:54, 24 September 2023

This article is about the mob. For the enchantment, see Depth Strider. For playable DLC character in Minecraft Dungeons with a similar appearance, see :MCD:Strider Warrior.

Striders are passive mobs native to the Nether.

In Java Edition striders are the only passive mob in the Nether, so spawning attempts are made every 400 game ticks. In Bedrock Edition striders share the animal population cap with hoglins and their spawn rate depends on biome, being impacted by the ability of other mobs to spawn at a given coordinate.

For every strider that spawns, there is a 1 in 10 chance of an additional baby strider to spawn riding on top of the previous strider. This behavior is limited to one strider.[1] A baby strider on the adult strider continues to grow although it does not dismount the adult strider once it has grown up.

Zombified piglins have a 1 in 30 chance of spawning on top of a strider. If this happens, the strider spawns with a saddle and the zombified piglin spawns carrying a warped fungus on a stick. The zombified piglin does not despawn naturally, and does not count towards the mob cap. On Peaceful difficulty, the zombified piglin despawns immediately, leaving a saddled strider.[2]

If a strider spawns under lava, it rises out of the lava. in Bedrock Edition, baby striders spawn more commonly than adult striders do, including when spawned by a spawn egg.

Drops

Adult striders drop 2–5 string upon death. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 2–8 with Looting III.‌[JE only][3]

Striders wearing a saddle always drop the saddle upon death, regardless of if they spawn wearing it or if a player puts it on them. The only way to remove a saddle from a strider is to kill the strider. When an adult strider is killed by a player or tamed wolf, 1–2‌[JE only] / 1–3‌[BE only] experience is dropped.

Behavior

Lava does not damage striders. Unlike most mobs, striders can walk on top of lava without sinking. Upon being harmed by another mob, striders attempt to flee for a few seconds while making "retreat" noises. Striders are damaged by water, rain, and splash water bottles, which deal damage by 1♥ per splash water bottle or half-second in water or rain, which can kill them. While in water, they slowly sink while taking damage. Striders still take damage from rain even if they are in lava. However, they are not harmed when standing in a filled cauldron. They also cannot be harmed by snowfall or snowballs. They take extra damage from freezing in powder snow.

They also move slower when outside of lava.[4]

If a strider has the Speed effect applied to it, the strider moves faster on both land and lava (though its land speed is still considerably slower). If a zombified piglin is riding a strider, the strider pursues the player if the zombified piglin is angered.

Due to a bug,[5] striders that fall from a height take fall damage when landing in lava. A baby strider on an adult strider still grows into an adult. Apart from this, adult striders riding other adult striders do not spawn naturally. Baby striders not riding on an adult follow the closest adult strider.

Riding

Main article: Riding
Strider riding

A player riding a strider (click to see animation).

The player can ride on an adult strider using a saddle.

Similar to how pigs are controlled using a carrot on a stick, striders move forward automatically while their direction is influenced using a warped fungus on a stick, at a speed of 4.14 m/s if on a flat lava surface (such as the Nether lava sea) or 1.74 m/s if on land. They walk especially slowly against the lava flow direction.

Warped fungus on a stick can be used, causing the strider to boost and walk at a greater speed[more information needed] and taking 1 point of durability from the warped fungus on a stick. They also follow players holding a warped fungus or a warped fungus on a stick.

However, in Java Edition, players cannot start riding a strider that is fully submeged within the lava.

A strider ridden into flowing lava slowly rises to the top. Fall damage does not affect striders that have dropped onto flowing lava, unlike the bug[5] for lava source blocks. When ridden over land, striders automatically walk up any one block high slope. They also cross any 1-wide block gap or air space that is only one block higher - diagonally up - when ridden directly upward and not completely sideways to the slope.

To safely dismount from a strider, a player who does not have fire resistance may face a solid block within reach before dismounting to dismount onto that block,[6] instead of at the strider's location (which is usually in lava[7]).

Striders can still be equipped with a saddle while another mob is riding it.

Breeding

Main article: Breeding

If striders are given warped fungus, they breed to create baby striders, granting the player 1–7 experience orbs. The parent striders have a cooldown of about 5 minutes before they can breed again. All babies obtained through breeding take 20 minutes to grow up. The growth of baby striders can be slowly accelerated using warped fungus; each use takes 10% off of the remaining time to grow up.

Chest loot
On the base of <code>ancient_city/city_center/city_center_2</code>, a single golden apple is contained in the chest. Eating it at that location unlocks the piston doors to the redstone labs beneath.
golden-apple

Usage
To eat a golden apple, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. It restores 4 points of hunger and 9.6 hunger saturation.

Unlike most foods, golden apples can be eaten when the hunger bar is full.

The golden apple provides:
*Absorption I for 2 minutes (providing points of absorption health)
*Regeneration II (1 every 25 ticks, × 0.4 per second) for 5 seconds (long enough to heal 4 points of damage)

Curing zombie villagers
Zombie Villager#Curing

A golden apple and a potion of weakness can be used to convert a zombie villager into a regular villager.

Horses
Golden apples can be used for improving the chances of taming a horse by 10%, for breeding and leading horses, and for speeding up the growth of baby horses by 4 minutes.

Piglins
Piglin are attracted to golden apples. They run toward any golden apples on the ground, and inspect it for 6 to 8 seconds before putting it in their inventory. However, piglins do not eat golden apples (or any food).

Trivia
Prior to Java Edition Beta 1.8, the golden apple outwardly restored the player's full 20 health points; Internally however, it is set to restore over double that, at 42 health points. This is most likely a reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, making it restore (the meaning of) life, 42 (health points). This is far before either the Absorption or Health Boost effects, causing this reference go unnoticed.

A brewing stand is a block used for brewing potions using bottles and suitable ingredients. It also serves as a cleric's job site block.

Obtaining
Breaking
A brewing stand can be obtained using any pickaxe. If mined without a pickaxe, it drops nothing JE, while it drops itself BE.

Natural generation
Brewing stands generate in end ships. They have two Instant Health II potions in their holders.

A brewing stand also generates in the basement of igloos with a splash potion of Weakness in it.

Brewing stands can generate without potions in village churches.

Usage
By default, the interface of a brewing stand is labeled "Brewing Stand", but this name can be customized by naming it in an anvil before placing it.

Brewing stands cannot be pushed by pistons java.

Brewing
Brewing
The main purpose of brewing stands is to allow for the brewing of potions. Its interface can be opened by pressing use on them.

Brewing stands need blaze powder as fuel. Each piece brews 20 batches of potions, with each stage of brewing counting separately. Unlike furnaces, there is no time limit; fuel is consumed only when there are bottles and an ingredient to brew into it.

Brewing stands interact with hoppers as follows:

* They accept brewing ingredients from hoppers pointing down into the top.
* Any valid potion recipe can be preloaded for "hands-free" brewing of a complex recipe, with the nether wart falling through into the stand for the first step.
* Bottles and fuel are accepted from hoppers pointing into the side.
* Finished products can be pulled out by hoppers below, but each stage of brewing counts as a batch of "finished" potions.

education, elements can be combined in the brewing stand to make the medicine potions: antidote, elixir, eye drops, and tonic.

Changing profession
If a village has a brewing stand that has not been claimed by a villager, any villager who hasn't already picked a job site block in the village has a chance to change their profession into cleric.

Light source
Brewing stands emit a light level of 1.

Trivia
* Even when the brewing stand is not in use, there is still smoke coming out of the top of it.
* In Java Edition, when a brewing stand is broken, particles from a bottle appear, even if no bottle is in the stand.
* No matter what potion (including water bottles) is in the stand it always looks like a full red bottle.
* Brewing stands always face east, no matter what direction they are placed.
* According to Searge, for thematic reasons, a brewing stand was added to the basement of the igloo. Because of this, blaze powder was required for fuel to preserve game progression. In this way, the player is prevented from using it before going to the Nether.

Tropical fish is a food item that cannot be cooked.

Obtaining
Fishing
Tropical fish can be obtained from fishing. The wait time of one being caught is decreased with the Lure enchantment and the chance of one being caught is slightly decreased with the Luck of the Sea enchantment (named as such because it increases treasure, not fish).

Tropical fish cannot be caught when fishing in jungle biome and variants.bedrock
<!--1-6 exp-->

Mob drops
Guardians and elder guardians have a 2.5% chance of dropping a random fish upon death. This has a 2% chance of being tropical fish. The chance of getting the fish drop can be increased by 1% per level of Looting, but the type of fish is not affected.

Tropical fish always drop 1 tropical fish in its item form when killed. This drop is not affected by Looting.

Usage
Food
Tropical fish restores 1 hunger and 0.2 saturation.

Trading
Expert-level fisherman villagers have a 1 chance to buy a single tropical fish for one emerald.bedrock

Expert-level fisherman villagers always offer to buy 6 tropical fish for an emerald.java

Wolves
Bedrock, tropical fish can be used to feed wolves, healing them by . However, unlike other wolf food, tropical fish cannot be used to breed or speed up the growth of baby wolves. Tropical fish can be fed only to a wolf that is not at full health.

When killed by any skeleton or stray (or wither skeleton if given a bow using commands), a creeper drops a random music disc in addition to its normal drops, with the exceptions of Pigstep, otherside, 5, and Relic.

Because TNT ignited by a flaming arrow attributes all resulting kills to the entity that fired the arrow, a skeleton igniting a TNT block due to holding a bow enchanted with Flame, or shooting through lava or fire, also causes any creepers killed in the explosion to drop a disc.

|C418
|A somewhat unsettling, cave-themed ambient piece consisting mostly of echoed synthesized ambient sounds that closely resemble those that play in the game's caves, resonating metallic clinks, and quiet wind blowing. The entire track is wholly engulfed in reverb. At different points in the piece, muffled bow firings, a heavily reverbed hiss followed by a subsequent heavily reverbed explosion and echoed splashes can be heard in the background. The track goes silent for 13 seconds at the 1:30 mark.

|A light, looping melody plays on a soft synth and is joined by a synth percussion beat. A toothlike synth plays a bass line and some harmonies throughout and is later accompanied by additional chiptune-like synths that provide more layers of harmony.

At 1:46, what sounds like an interpolation of part of the melody from the track "Minecraft" plays.

The four-note pattern at 2:04 can also be heard at the beginning of "far" and "dog".

|A recording that begins with vinyl static, followed by the sounds of someone walking on or breaking stone blocks, heavy breathing, and rustling. Haunting background noises are heard throughout the recording, resembling the ambient sound effects that play in the game's caves (and by extension, the sounds of the disc "13"). After the background noises quiet down for a moment, metallic clicking or scraping noises can be heard, followed by coughing, sounds of page-turning, then more clicking or scraping. The background noises resume more loudly, and the sounds of faster footsteps or breaking stone blocks can be heard, which accelerate until they are replaced with dirt sounds as the background noises approach. A loud, distorted noise is heard roughly a second before the recording abruptly stops. At this point, one hears only quiet beeping, vinyl static, and a hissing noise, and the track ends.

| A recording that begins with static and a warped noise. After a moment of silence, there is the sound of a flint and steel lighting, fire, a bat, and then walking. The walking becomes heavier and metallic. The sound stops with sounds of breathing followed by a roar which warps into soft, relaxing music. The music soon transitions back, to the sound of footsteps, lava bubbling, and amethyst. A warped noise and a sculk shrieker can be heard activating. Then a coughing sound, something metallic and stone and sand sounds followed by another warped noise can be heard. Then, after a moment of silence, a heartbeat begins and a rising static can be heard in the background. Sounds of deepslate can then be heard, along with strange noises building up and abruptly stopping. A crescendo of overlapping warped sounds is followed then dies down. The footsteps begin again, much quieter now. A sculk sensor clicks, and a warden roars. The wardens roar warps and slows down, and then the disc ends.

|The recording begins with vinyl static and record grain before abruptly bursting out into an upbeat 8-bit tune of low audio quality. The main melody of "A Time of Legends" and "The Well of Fate" from the original soundtrack of Minecraft Legends is heard later, played on the same 8-bit synthesizer. Later in the song a bass is added to the noise. Slight record grain and warbled pitches can be heard throughout the song.

Usage
The music discs resemble older 78-rpm phonograph records from the early 20th century, which were often played in jukeboxes from that era. They are used in Minecraft in a similar fashion: A music disc can be played on a jukebox by holding the disc and right-clicking on the jukebox.

The in-game music disc tracks are all Monaural recordings. Tracks released for listening outside of the game are in Stereophonic_sound.

If the player places a comparator besides a jukebox, the intensity of the redstone signal depends on the disc currently played, with the following values:

Trivia
* Before The Flattening, data values used by music discs ranged from 2256 to 2267, while all other blocks/items used the first free data value available.
* The title "13" is a reference to the 13 cave ambience sounds that existed when the disc was added. Similar sounds can be heard throughout the track.
** Because "13" was created in 2010, it actually uses older sound effects from earlier versions of the game for bow firing, arrow impacts, explosions, and water splashing, which have since been replaced.
***The background noise also bears resemblance to a deeper version of the unused and removed cave chimes. Before the explosion, there was also the sound of a creeper fuse which is still used.
**C418 initially wanted the music disc to be found deep underground in a cave in-game, being played by some device.
*Exclusively on lce, an extra track called "dog" is appended to the "cat" music disc. Once "cat" is done playing and fades out, "dog" begins playing for another two minutes or so, making this version of "cat" the longest music disc in the game.
*"chirp" uses the same accompaniment samples as "The Orb of Dreamers" from the LittleBigPlanet series. The samples come from the Optigan disc "Bossa Nova Style". C418 stated that it was coincidental.
*The texture used for the music disc "chirp" was previously used for the camera tripod texture prior to Pocket Edition v0.9.0 alpha.
*The title "stal" is a Swedish word meaning stole in English and a Polish word meaning steel.
*The music disc "11" is the only visibly damaged music disc.
**If the .ogg file for "11" is turned into a spectrogram in an audio editor, the static at the end displays what seems to be Steve's face and the numbers 12418. The numbers are a visual signature, where "C" is hexadecimal for "12", and combined with "418" creates "C418", the name of the producer of all of the music disc tracks except for "Pigstep", "otherside", "5" and "Relic".
**Within the disc are sounds, in order of appearance, of stone and dirt or gravel. At the time disc "11" was made, footstep sounds, placing sounds, and breaking sounds were the same for the respecive block. It is unknown exactly what the character was doing when these sounds were played.
**There is a track that is exclusive to the album Minecraft - Volume Beta called "Eleven", which has the same length of 1:11 and begins with the same vinyl static sound before being abruptly interrupted by a record scratching sound and switching to a new, calm piano piece.
** C418 once imagined that the "monster" chasing the person in "11" is himself "being a weird monster that occasionally records songs from strangers and then dies in '11'".
** "11" causes jukeboxes to output a redstone signal strength of 11.
** Before Java Edition 1.13, the data value of "11" was 11.
**Brandon Pearce stated that the warden mob is based on the "monster" heard at the end of "11".
*The music disc "wait", originally titled "where are we now", was finally added to Java Edition 1.4.3 after existing solely in the game's files for an unspecified amount of time.
**"wait" used the original title "where are we now" in older versions of the Legacy Console Edition.
*"Pigstep" is the only disc to have its name capitalized in-game, and it can only be found in bastion remnants. It is also the music disc with the fastest beat.
*"Pigstep" is a portmanteau of "piglin" and "dubstep".
*“5” is the only music disc that is crafted, as it requires 9 disc fragments in a 3×3 formation to craft.
**In disc “5”, there are some sounds taken from Minecraft Dungeons of the Endersent , the Vengeful Heart of Ender, and relating to an enderman .
***Other sounds can be heard. In order of appearance, these are: flint and steel clicking , a bat, lava bubbling, amethyst cluster breaking, a sculk shrieker, stone, sand, a sculk shrieker overlaying a warden, sculk sensor clicking, and a warden roaring.

beta 1.16.0.63Striders now move faster to resemble a boat's speed on water.
1.16.100Tropical fish also have assigned names that can be seen after capture. In Java Edition, the smaller text under the item name is displayed showing the fish name, similar to the text that displays enchantments under enchanted items. In Bedrock Edition, the item name is displayed showing "Bucket of <fish name>". Their colors are mostly named according to the colored block names, though with a few exceptions:
 • White
 • Silver
 • Gray
 • Black
 • Brown
 • Red
 • Orange
 • Yellow
 • Lime
 • Green
 • Teal
 • Sky
 • Blue
 • Plum
 • Magenta
 • Rose

The base color comes first, and if the pattern color is different, it comes after that. Lastly, the fish bucket is given a name according to the shape and pattern of the fish:

Flopper Glitter Betty
Stripey Blockfish Clayfish
Tropical Fish Patterns
Kob Snooper Brinely
SunStreak Dasher Spotty

Some tropical fish don't follow the normal naming system, and instead, reference real-life fish species. Apart from these names, these types of fish aren't different from regular tropical fish in terms of design or behavior.

These varieties are:

Trivia

Strider fin

Strider's fin

 • Striders had a fin in their texture file. The fin wasn't visible in-game and was removed in 20w15a.
 • If commands are used to saddle a baby strider, and the player rides the baby strider, the player takes fire damage due to not being high enough to avoid the lava.
 • Mojang added striders to the game as the solution to the community request for lava boats.[11]
 • At one point in the strider's development, before it was added to the game, a strider out of lava would retract its legs and start to take damage while bouncing around until it died, similar to how fish suffocate when out of water. This feature was discarded for being "too sad".[12]
 • Striders were planned to have their own unique armor and saddle, but this was decided against.[13]
 • Striders were initially going to have a long tongue with each they could eat things, not too dissimilar to a current frogs. The different items would all have various effects, such as swords hurting the strider, and TNT exploding.[14]
 • Part of the reason that striders drop string (from their bristles) was to answer the question of "how do piglins make crossbows?".[12]
 • The bobbing animation that the strider makes while walking was initially an accident. However, the developers thought it was "quirky and fun", so it was added as a feature.[12]
