Yes (64), the same type of spawn egg only

A spawn egg[a] is an item used to spawn mobs directly.

Obtaining[edit]

Spawn eggs can be obtained only in Creative mode or using commands. In Creative mode, the player can press pick block on an existing mob to obtain their respective egg. Spawn eggs are also available in the Creative inventory. There are 67 eggs in Bedrock Edition and 64 eggs in Java Edition.

Usage[edit]

A spawn egg is used by pressing use on any surface (top, bottom, or side) with the egg. When used on a top surface, the egg's mob appears with its feet immediately adjacent to the surface, and its ambient sound is played.

Spawn eggs are not thrown (unlike normal eggs); the player must be within normal range of the block to use the spawn egg. Hostile and neutral mobs (except wolves, polar bears, pandas, dolphins, llamas, bees, vindicators, evokers, shulkers, Zoglins, Hoglins, Piglin Brute (BE only), and Piglins ) spawned while on Peaceful difficulty get created and immediately deleted from the world.

The surfaces of blocks are prioritized for spawning; if none are within reach, mobs can also be spawned in water.

Dispensers[edit]

A spawn egg fired from a dispenser spawns the mob directly in front of the dispenser.

Baby mobs[edit]

If a mob has a baby form, and the player uses its spawn egg on an adult, it spawns a baby version of that mob, rather than an adult.‌[Java Edition only] Other mobs such as evokers, vindicators, and vexes don't breed.

Spawners[edit]

All spawn egg can also be used on a spawner to change the mob the spawner spawns. In Bedrock Edition, spawn eggs for any of the fish mobs spawn them only if the spawner is waterlogged.

Renaming[edit]

A spawn egg can be renamed on an anvil, and when used it spawns a mob with that name appearing over its head. The name can be seen only by aiming at the mob from four or fewer blocks away. This name also appears in death messages from the mob killing a player. If the player renames a spawn egg by the names described below, the mob appears described below. If the player renames a rabbit spawn egg "Toast", the secret skin of the rabbit appears when the egg is used. Naming a spawn egg "Dinnerbone" or "Grumm" causes the mob to appear upside down and show the given name above it. Renaming a vindicator "Johnny" causes it to act hostile to all mobs except for other illagers. Renaming a Sheep "jeb_" makes the sheep change colors (in a rainbow loop). This doesn't change the color of the wool you get from the sheep. Renaming a spawn egg of a hostile mob with an anvil and then spawning a hostile mob with the renamed spawn egg will not make the hostile mob despawn proof unlike using a name tag.

Item data[edit]

Java Edition[edit]

  •  tag: The item's tag tag.
    •  EntityTag: Stores entity data that is applied to the entity when created.

Bedrock Edition[edit]

  •  tag: The item's tag tag.
    •  ItemIdentifier: The entity's string ID.

When using the /give command to give a spawn egg, it requires the numeric ID of an entity; for example: /give <playername> spawn_egg 1 33 would give an egg that spawns a creeper. For reference, see Bedrock Edition data values#Entity IDs for a complete list of entity IDs.

Eggs can be given not just for mobs listed in the table above, but for a few other entities. These eggs are uncolored (completely black) and are given unlocalized placeholder names, or simply, "Spawn".

  • The elder guardian ghost (120) spawn egg can be given with commands.
  • Using any other entity ID fails to give the egg, but an egg can be obtained using an inventory editor or custom behavior packs.
  • The painting spawn egg instantly crashes the game.

History[edit]

1.111w49aCreeper Spawn Egg JE1.png Spider Spawn Egg JE1.png Skeleton Spawn Egg JE1.png Zombie Spawn Egg JE1.png Slime Spawn Egg JE1.png Ghast Spawn Egg JE1.png Zombie Pigman Spawn Egg JE1.png Enderman Spawn Egg JE1.png Cave Spider Spawn Egg JE1.png Silverfish Spawn Egg JE1.png Blaze Spawn Egg JE1.png Magma Cube Spawn Egg JE1.png Pig Spawn Egg JE1.png Sheep Spawn Egg JE1.png Cow Spawn Egg JE1.png Chicken Spawn Egg JE1.png Squid Spawn Egg JE1.png Wolf Spawn Egg JE1.png Mooshroom Spawn Egg JE1.png Villager Spawn Egg JE1.png Added spawn eggs for creepers, spiders, skeletons, zombies, slimes, ghasts, zombie pigmen, endermen, cave spiders, silverfish, blazes, magma cubes, pigs, sheep, cows, chickens, squid, wolves, mooshrooms and villagers.
The spawn egg has a single texture file, which is tinted different colors.
12w01aCreeper Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Spider Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Skeleton Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Zombie Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Slime Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Ghast Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Zombie Pigman Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Enderman Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Cave Spider Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Silverfish Spawn Egg JE2 BE2.png Blaze Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Magma Cube Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Pig Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Sheep Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Cow Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Chicken Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Squid Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Wolf Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Mooshroom Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png Villager Spawn Egg JE2 BE1.png The spawn egg and its markings now have their textures separated, allowing them to have entirely different colors. This allows their colors to better match the colors of the mobs themselves.
1.2.112w03aSpawn eggs can now be placed into a dispenser. Activating the dispenser spawns the mob, instead of dispensing the egg as an item.
Spawn eggs are now stackable, which allows dispensers to hold more than nine of them at one time.
12w04aOcelot Spawn Egg JE1 BE1.png Added ocelot spawn eggs with the addition of the ocelot itself.
Before 1.2, edited spawn eggs for snow golems, ender dragons and giants (and other "unspawnable" mobs) produced mobs of their types. Now, this is restricted to those eggs available in the creative inventory.
1.3.112w18aVillagers spawned from spawn eggs were always farmers before this update and now their professions are randomized.
1.4.212w32aZombie villager can now be spawned using zombie spawn eggs.
Sheep from spawn eggs can now spawn naturally-colored sheep (white, gray, brown, pink, etc.).
12w36aWither skeletons now have a high chance to spawn from a skeleton spawn egg, if the player is in the Nether.
Skeletons on spider jockeys can now be replaced with wither skeletons when using spider spawn eggs in the Nether.
12w38aWitch Spawn Egg JE1 BE1.png Bat Spawn Egg JE1 BE1.png Added witch and bat spawn eggs.
1.4.4preBaby mobs are now spawn-able by right-clicking a mob with a corresponding mob egg. Although, this doesn't work with zombies.
1.5January 7, 2013Dinnerbone tweeted the first image of a renamed mob appearing in a death message.
13w02aMobs spawned from renamed eggs now have the name of the egg and the names appear in death messages.
Mobs can now display their custom name as nametag using an NBT tag.
1.6.113w16aHorse Spawn Egg JE1 BE1.png Added horse spawn eggs.
13w24aSpawn eggs now work on water.
1.6-preRenaming a spawn egg "Dinnerbone" or "Grumm" now cause the mob to spawn upside-down.
1.7.413w48bRenaming a sheep or sheep spawn egg "jeb_" give it a rainbow wool changing effect. This does not affect the wool dropped after death or shearing, however.
1.814w11aEndermite Spawn Egg JE1 BE1.png Added endermite spawn eggs.
14w25aGuardian Spawn Egg JE1 BE1.png Added guardian spawn eggs.
14w27aRabbit Spawn Egg JE1 BE1.png Added rabbit spawn eggs.
14w28bSpawn eggs can now be used to program monster spawner blocks.
1.915w31aShulker Spawn Egg JE1 BE2.png Added shulker spawn eggs.
15w33aSpawn eggs can no longer be addressed by numeric data id, like: give @p spawn_egg 1 50. The spawnable item from a spawn egg is now addressed by a datatag: give @p spawn_egg 1 {EntityTag:{id:"Creeper"} }.
