Snowballs became a part of Minecraft in alpha version 1.0.5, the same update that added snow blocks. They can be collected by hitting snow blocks or snow layers with a shovel, by destroying snow golems, or by exploding creepers. Snow far, snow good.

Duncan Geere[1]

Snowballs are throwable combat items.

Obtaining[edit]

Snow blocks[edit]

A shovel without the Silk Touch enchantment can get 4 snowballs by breaking a snow block, and 1–8 snowballs by breaking snow layers – one per layer. The Fortune enchantment does not affect these amounts.

Snow golems[edit]

Snow golems drop 0–15 snowballs upon death.

Chest loot[edit]

Snowballs can be found in 66.3% of snowy village house chests in stacks of 1–7.

Creepers[edit]

{Creeper explosions leave snowballs in the resulting debris field.}

Combat[edit]

Snowballs can be thrown by using them, similar to an egg. They are affected by gravity.

They deal 3♥♥ to blazes but they deal no damage to other mobs. Mobs still have knockback and give the same effect as if they were being damaged, but players are unaffected.[2]

When fighting the ender dragon, end crystals are able to be destroyed by snowballs being thrown at them.

Dispenser[edit]

Snowballs can be fired from dispensers.
