Duncan Geere Mojang avatar.png Snowballs became a part of Minecraft in alpha version 1.0.5, the same update that added snow blocks. They can be collected by hitting snow blocks or snow layers with a shovel, or by destroying snow golems. Snow far, snow good.
Duncan Geere[1]

Snowballs are throwable items.

Snow blocks[edit]

Snowballs can be obtained by breaking snow blocks (4 snowballs) when using a shovel without silk touch and by breaking snow layers using a shovel (1–8 snowballs; one per layer).

Snow golems[edit]

Snow golems drop 0–15 snowballs upon death.

Natural generation[edit]

Snowballs can be found inside snowy tundra village house chests in stacks of 0–7.‌[upcoming: JE 1.14 & BE 1.11]

Name Ingredients Crafting recipe
Snow Block Snowball

Snowballs can be thrown by using them, similar to an egg. They are affected by gravity.

They deal 3 (Heart.svgHalf Heart.svg) to blazes but they deal no damage to other mobs. Mobs still have knockback and give the same effect as if they were being damaged, but players are unaffected.[2]

When fighting the Ender Dragon, End crystals are able to be destroyed by snowballs being thrown at them.

In the Legacy Console Edition's Tumble mini game, snowballs destroy blocks that they hit.

Snowballs can be fired from dispensers.
