Duncan Geere Mojang avatar.png This grey stalwart is one of the original Minecraft blocks, added alongside dirt and wood planks on 16 May 2009, while the game was in its very earliest stages of development. In fact, it’s almost as old as the name “Minecraft” itself – before that date, the game was simply known as “Cave Game”, while afterwards it became “Minecraft: Order of the Stone”.
Duncan Geere[1]

Stone is a block found extremely commonly in the Overworld.

Smooth stone is a variant of stone available only in the creative inventory,‌[Java and Legacy Console editions only][until JE 1.14] or made by smelting regular stone.‌[Java and Bedrock editions only][upcoming: JE 1.14]

Obtaining[edit]

Stone requires a pickaxe to be mined, in which case it will drop cobblestone. When mined without a pickaxe, it will drop nothing. If stone is mined with a Silk Touch enchanted pickaxe, it will drop itself.

Natural generation[edit]

Stone makes up the majority of the solid blocks generated. When chunks generate, stone can be found under layers of grass and dirt in most biomes. It can also be seen exposed at the side of mountains.

When the world is generating new chunks, some stone becomes ore, and almost every cavern and mineshaft will generate at stone level.

Smooth stone generates inside some houses in plains, savanna, and snowy tundra villages.‌[upcoming: JE 1.14]

Water and lava[edit]

A simple stone generator.

Stone can also be made by lava flowing on top of water, where the water will be replaced.
