The main purpose of a shovel is that it lets you mine certain kinds of blocks faster. Dirt, sand and gravel are the most common reasons to carry a shovel around, but they also work to speed up the collection of clay, soul sand and snow. Higher-tier tools work faster – a snow block that would take a second to break by hand takes 0.2 seconds with a wooden shovel, 0.1 seconds with stone, and a super-quick 0.05 seconds with an iron, gold or diamond shovel. DIGDIGDIGDIGDIG.

Duncan Geere[1]

Shovels are tools used to ease the process of collecting dirt and other blocks.

The durability of the two shovels is added together, plus an extra 5% durability.

Natural generation[edit]

Iron shovels can be found in 41.2% of village toolsmith chests in groups of 1.

Enchanted iron shovels[note 1] can be found in 13.3% of End city chests in groups of 1.

Enchanted diamond shovels[note 1] can be found in 13.3% of End city chests in groups of 1.

Notes
  1. a b Enchantment probabilities are the same as a level-20 to level-39 enchantment would be on an enchantment table that had no cap at level 30, and that was able to apply treasure enchantments, and where the chance of multiple enchantments is not reduced.

Drops[edit]

Equipment[edit]

Zombies and Husks have a 0.67% (3.33% in Hard difficulty) chance of spawning with an iron shovel. They have an 8.5% (9.5% with Looting I, 10.5% with Looting II and 11.5% with Looting III) chance of dropping that shovel if they are killed by the player. It will usually be badly damaged, and may be enchanted: 0%–25% on Normal difficulty and 3.125%–25% on Hard difficulty, varying with regional difficulty, and enchanted as if on an enchantment table at level 5–22.

Raids[edit]

Vindicators and pillagers that spawn from raids have a 4.1% chance(5.12% on hard) to drop an iron shovel which will be badly damaged and sometimes enchanted with a random enchantment.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

Trading[edit]

Toolsmith villagers sell enchanted iron shovels for 5 to 7 emeralds as part of their tier 1 trades.‌[Legacy Console Edition only]

Novice-level Toolsmith villagers have a 25% chance to sell stone shovels for one emerald, journeyman-level toolsmith villagers have a 25% chance to sell enchanted iron shovels for 2 emeralds, and expert-level toolsmith villagers have a 50% chance to sell enchanted diamond shovels for 5 emeralds as part of their trades.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

Novice-level Toolsmith villagers have a 40% chance to sell stone shovels for one emerald, journeyman-level toolsmiths have a 40% chance to sell an enchanted iron shovel for 7-22 emeralds, and expert-level toolsmiths have a 23 chance to sell an enchanted diamond shovel for 11-27 emeralds.‌[Java Edition only]

The enchantments will be the same as the ones obtained from an enchantment table at levels 5–19.

Usage[edit]

Shovels have different amounts of uses based on the type:

  • Golden: 33
  • Wooden: 60
  • Stone: 132
  • Iron: 251
  • Diamond: 1562

Digging[edit]

A shovel can be used to break some materials faster. When breaking a block, it uses 1 durability. For blocks that break instantly, it uses 0 durability.

Speed[edit]

The following table summarizes the speed at which different quality shovels perform on different block types. Values with a red background indicate that no resource will be dropped when the block is destroyed without a shovel.

Grass paths[edit]

A shovel can be used to create a grass path by using (not digging) the shovel on a grass block. When creating a grass path, it uses 1 durability.

Campfire[edit]

A shovel can be used to extinguish a campfire.‌[Bedrock and PlayStation 4 editions only][upcoming: JE 1.15]

Weapon[edit]

If the player hits a mob while holding a shovel, it will be a stronger attack than if barehanded. Shovels take 2 damage when used as a weapon.

Java Edition[edit]

Shovels have an attack speed modifier of -3, meaning they take 1 second to recover. Shovels deal different damage based on the type:

Attack speed Attack damage Damage/Second (DPS)
