Why is seagrass so exciting? Let me tell you. Firstly, it’s beautiful – look at it swaying in the currents of a warm ocean biome and tell me it’s not gorgeous. Secondly, you can find it just about anywhere that’s underwater – it grows in every ocean biome except for frozen oceans, because they’re frozen. Finally, it’s renewable and compostable, making it the most sustainable underwater resource around – perfect for an undersea habitation sphere.

Duncan Geere[1]

Seagrass is a non-solid plant block that generates in all oceans, except frozen oceans.

Natural generation[edit]

  • Natural generation: Seagrass generates in either its tall or small form in ocean biomes near kelp, and also generates by itself in rivers, underwater caves and swamps, replacing ice[2] and planks[3] as necessary.
  • Bone meal: Using bone meal underwater generates seagrass. The bone meal must be used on a non-transparent block under at least 2 blocks of water, with the water directly above the block being non-flowing. If these conditions are met, seagrass generates on that block and, if available, also on surrounding blocks. Regular seagrass grows into tall seagrass if more bone meal is applied and if vertical space is available.

Obtaining[edit]

Seagrass can be obtained via:

  • Harvesting: Seagrass can be harvested only with shears. Using any other tool, item, or the player’s fist destroys seagrass and it drops nothing. When harvested with shears, regular seagrass drops itself as an item, and tall seagrass drops 2 seagrass items.
  • Turtles: A turtle drops 0–2 seagrass when killed. The Looting enchantment increases the maximum number of possible seagrass drops by 1 per level.

Usage[edit]

The seagrass item can be placed only on non-transparent blocks.

Like grass, snow layers, and other such blocks, placing blocks inside seagrass deletes the seagrass. However, seagrass prevents coral fan placement.‌[Bedrock Edition only][4]

Tall seagrass has a hitbox considerably more appropiate for its size than other two-block-tall plants such as tall grass. This inconsistency is completely intended.[5]

Breeding[edit]

Seagrass can be used to breed turtles.

Bone meal[edit]

Applying bone meal to a regular seagrass will turn it into tall seagrass, assuming there is enough space. The bone meal is wasted if no such space exists.[6]

Composting[edit]

Placing seagrass into a composter has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Growing[edit]

Using seagrass on a baby turtle accelerates its growing time. When the turtle becomes an adult, it drops one scute.
