Why is seagrass so exciting? Let me tell you. Firstly, it’s beautiful – look at it swaying in the currents of a warm ocean biome and tell me it’s not gorgeous. Secondly, you can find it just about anywhere that’s underwater – it grows in every ocean biome except for frozen oceans, because they’re frozen. Finally, it’s renewable and compostable, making it the most sustainable underwater resource around – perfect for an undersea habitation sphere.

Duncan Geere[1]

Seagrass is a non-solid plant block that generates in all oceans, except frozen oceans.

Obtaining[edit]

Seagrass can be destroyed instantly with any tool, item or the player’s fist. It can only be obtained using shears or it will drop nothing. Regular seagrass drops 1 seagrass when harvested with shears and tall seagrass drops 2 seagrass when harvested with shears.

Turtles[edit]

Turtles will drop 0–2 seagrass when killed. The Looting enchantment will increase the maximum number of possible seagrass drops by 1 per level.

Natural generation[edit]

Seagrass generates in either its tall or small form in ocean biomes near kelp, and will also generate by itself in rivers, underwater caves and swamps, replacing ice[2] and planks[3] as necessary.

Bone meal[edit]

Using bone meal underwater will generate seagrass. The bone meal must be used on a non-transparent block under at least 2 blocks of water, with the water directly above the block being non-flowing. If these conditions are met, seagrass will generate on that block and, if available, also on surrounding blocks.

Usage[edit]

The seagrass item can only be placed on non-transparent blocks.

Like grass, snow layers and other such blocks, placing blocks inside seagrass will delete it. However, it will block coral fan placement.‌[Bedrock Edition only][4]

Breeding[edit]

Seagrass can be used to breed turtles.

Bone meal[edit]

Applying bone meal to a regular seagrass will turn it into tall seagrass, assuming there is enough space. It can also be used to completely waste bone meal if no such space exists.[5].

Composting[edit]

Placing seagrass into a composter has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Growing[edit]

Using seagrass on a baby turtle will speed up its growing time. When the turtle is an adult, it will drop one scute. This is the only way to obtain the item.
