Seagrass is a non-solid plant block that generates in all oceans, except frozen oceans.

Obtaining[edit]

Seagrass can be destroyed instantly with any tool, item or the player’s fist, but it can be only obtained using shears, or it will drop nothing. Regular seagrass drops 1 seagrass when harvested with shears and tall seagrass drops 2 seagrass when harvested with shears.

Turtles[edit]

Turtles will drop 0–2 seagrass when killed. The Looting enchantment will increase the maximum number of possible seagrass drops by 1 per level.

Natural generation[edit]

Seagrass generates in either its tall or small form in ocean biomes near kelp, and will also generate in rivers, underwater caves and swamps by itself, replacing ice[1] and planks[2] as necessary.

Bone meal[edit]

Using bone meal underwater will generate seagrass. The bone meal must be used on a non-transparent block under at least 2 blocks of water, with the water directly above the block being non-flowing. If these conditions are met, a one-block tall seagrass will generate on that block, and if available, seagrass will also generate on surrounding blocks.

Usage[edit]

The seagrass item can only be placed on non-transparent blocks.

Like grass, snow layers and other such blocks, placing blocks inside seagrass will delete it. However, it will block coral fan placement.‌[Bedrock Edition only][3]

Breeding[edit]

Seagrass can be used to breed turtles.

Bone meal[edit]

Applying bone meal to a one-block-tall seagrass will turn it into a two-block-tall seagrass, assuming there is enough space. It can also be used to completely waste bone meal if no such space exists.[4].

Composting[edit]

Placing seagrass into a composter has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.‌[upcoming: JE 1.14]
