Creepers[edit]

When killed by any skeleton's or stray's arrow, a creeper drops a random music disc in addition to its normal drops. The Pigstep music disc cannot be dropped.

Discs[edit]

Tracks by C418 have been shortened to 30 seconds on this wiki, due to an agreement with the composer. "11" is exempt from this.
Icon Track name Composer Description Track Length (time)
13 C418 A somewhat unsettling ambient track consisting mostly of cave sounds, metallic clinks, splashes, wind blowing, creeper explosion and muffled bow firings. 2:58
cat C418 A looping melody plays and eventually gains a beat. A toothlike synth plays throughout 3:05
blocks C418 An upbeat, catchy tune. 5:45
chirp C418 A retro tune with a sample from a 1970 MATTEL Program Disc: Bossa Nova Style playing in the background, along with a vaporwave-like version of Mall. 3:05
far C418 A calm, relaxing, nature-like melody. 2:54
mall C418 A calm, underwater-like, piece of serene music. 3:17
mellohi C418 A slow, slightly melancholic waltz with a sample from a mellotron playing in the background. 1:36
stal C418 A moderate jazz-like piece. 2:30
strad C418 A tropical-sounding synth piece. 3:08
ward C418 The record starts off with an excerpt from Chopin's Funeral March[1] played on synth organ but goes into an electronic, upbeat, exploration and adventure tune with a dark undertone. 4:11
11 C418 A deeply unsettling disc; the recording seems to be of a person running across (or maybe breaking) different block types and later on stopping to use equipment of some kind, coughing, and then continuing running with a hastened pace. The block sounds similar to that of dirt and stone. The person is struggling and haunting background noises are heard throughout the recording. Strange noises of barking or wind blowing are heard near the end before abruptly stopping. One can hear a hissing noise akin to what would be expected at the end of an older shellac record at this point. 1:11
wait C418 An upbeat and relaxing song, with a "blocky" feel to it.

This disc was only later added to Minecraft, after having existed in the game data for quite some time (as where are we now).

3:58 (Fades at 3:51)
Pigstep Lena Raine The only disc that may be obtained exclusively in the Nether, in bastion remnants. Has an intense beat, along with more mellow parts further in reminiscent of a radio. 2:28

History[edit]

Java Edition Alpha
April 2010C418 uploaded a video to YouTube, containing previews of many music tracks that were later added as records.
v1.0.14Music Disc 13 JE1 BE1.png 13 and Music Disc Cat JE1 BE1.png cat were the first records to be added to Minecraft. Records were officially named "music discs". 13 was an ambient track before this update.[more information needed]
Music discs were added to dungeon chests.
Unknown
?Music discs are dropped by creepers shot by skeletons.
Java Edition Beta
1.2_02Before this update, gold 13 music discs were noticeably more common than green cat ones. Now, green cat discs are more often dropped.
August 1, 2011C418 announces new music discs.
Java Edition
1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease 2Music Disc 11 JE1 BE1.png Music Disc Blocks JE1 BE1.png Music Disc Chirp JE1 BE1.png Music Disc Far JE1 BE1.png Music Disc Mall JE1 BE1.png Music Disc Mellohi JE1 BE1.png Music Disc Stal JE1 BE1.png Music Disc Strad JE1 BE1.png Music Disc Ward JE1 BE1.png 9 new discs were implemented, adding up to a total of 11 discs, although they are not dropped by any creepers. These are stored along with the first discs, 13.mus and cat.mus, (which have been decoded as 13.ogg and cat.ogg respectively). Before this update,[when?] there were 12 unused music files, now only one remains unused, which is the song "where are we now". "Where are we now" was not added with the rest of the new 9 discs because of problems with the spaces in the name.[2]
1.111w50aAll of the discs except for 11 can be dropped by creepers killed by skeletons. Also, they all have the same probability of being dropped now.
1.4.41.4.3Music Disc Wait JE1 BE1.png The disc where are we now was renamed to wait and was made available in game.[3]11 is also available in Survival now. It is dropped by creepers in the same way as other discs.
1.513w04aActive jukeboxes give off a redstone signal when a comparator is placed behind it; its strength depends on the ID of the inserted disc.
1.6.113w24aCustom music discs can now be made using resource packs.
Before this version, cat and 13 were the only discs in .ogg formats, all the other discs were in .mus format, which was decrypted by Minecraft on-the-fly.
1.915w44aDecreased average yield from dungeon chests.
1.1116w39aMusic discs cat and 13 are now found in the new woodland mansion chests.
1.1317w47aThe IDs have been changed from record_$song to music_disc_$song.
Prior to The Flattening, these items' numeral IDs were 2256 through 2267.
1.1418w43aMusic Disc 11 JE2 BE2.png Texture of music disc 11 has now been changed.
Music discs are now also dropped by creepers killed by strays.
1.1620w16aMusic Disc Pigstep JE1 BE1.png Added a new music disc called "Pigstep". It cannot be dropped by creepers, and can only be obtained from Bastion Remnants.

Trivia[edit]

  • Before The Flattening, data values used by music discs ranged from 2256 to 2267, while all other blocks/items used the first free data value available.
  • The discs appear to be based on older 78-RPM records. These usually held a single 2–3 minute song on one or both sides, were made out of a noisy material called shellac (which was notorious for its fragility and hissing sound when no music was playing, both of which can be seen in "11"), and were larger than the 45-RPM vinyl records that replaced them.
  • The title "13" is a reference to the 13 ambience tracks that existed when the disc was added. A few of these can be heard throughout the track.
  • On the Legacy Console Edition, the track "dog" is appended to the "cat" music disc. Once "cat" is done playing and the soundtrack fades out, "dog" begins playing for another two minutes or so, making this version of "cat" the longest music disc in the game.
  • The "blocks" disc is one of the only non-block item in the game that has the word "block" in its name, the other being the minecart with command block. That makes it the only item that appears when searched for in the Creative item selection menu.
  • The "chirp" track uses a sample from the Optigan disc "Bossa Nova Style".[4] It also sounds very similar to the song "The Orb Of Dreamers" from the PlayStation game series LittleBigPlanet, which uses the same sample. The two can be compared here.
  • The title "stal" is a Swedish word meaning stole in English and a Polish word meaning steel.
    • This could be the Swedish word stål (with an added ring diacritic), which would mean steel in English.
  • Disc "11" is the 11th music disc in the game, according to its data value before Java Edition 1.13 and the redstone signal strength it causes jukeboxes to output.
    • Disc "11" is the only visibly damaged music disc (this is possibly the reason why the disc sounds distorted).
    • Disc "11" lasts for 1 minute, 11 seconds and 111 milliseconds.
    • If the .ogg file for the music disc "11" is turned into a spectrogram in an audio editor, the static at the end displays what seems to be Steve's face and the numbers 12418.
      • The numbers are a visual signature, where "C" is hexadecimal for "12", and combined with "418" creates "C418" (the producer of the music from music discs).
  • "Pigstep" is unique in a few different ways. It is the only music disc to have a different color for the disc part, it is the only disc not composed by C418, it is the only disc to have its name capitalized, it is the disc that has the fastest beat, and it is the only disc that is obtainable exclusively through chest loot.
  • "Pigstep" is a portmanteau of "dubstep" and "piglin".[5]
