Raw cod is a food item.

Obtaining[edit]

Fishing[edit]

The most common way of obtaining raw cod is fishing. The wait time of one being caught is decreased with the Lure enchantment and the chance of one being caught is slightly decreased with the Luck of the Sea enchantment (named as such because it increases treasure, not fish).

Mob drops[edit]

Guardians and elder guardians[edit]

Guardians and elder guardians have a 40% and 50% chance to drop raw cod respectively when killed. In Java Edition, the raw cod will become cooked if the guardian/elder guardian was killed while on fire.

Guardians and elder guardians also drop a 2.5% chance to drop a random fish. This has a 60% chance of being raw cod. The chance of getting the fish drop is increased by 1% per level with Looting (for a maximum of 5.5% with Looting III), but the type of fish is not affected. The fish will not be cooked if the guardian or elder guardian was on fire.

Polar bears[edit]

Polar bears have a 75% chance of dropping 0–2 raw cod when killed. The maximum amount can be increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-5 with Looting III.

Cod mobs[edit]

Cod will always drop 1 raw cod when killed. In Java Edition, if it is killed on fire, it will drop cooked cod instead.

Dolphins[edit]

When killed, dolphins drop 0–1 raw cod. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-4 with Looting III. If killed while on fire, they will drop cooked cod instead.

Natural generation[edit]

Raw cod can be found in 43.0% of village fisherman chests in stacks of 1–3.‌[Java Edition only]

Usage[edit]

Smelting ingredient[edit]

Ingredients Smelting recipe
Raw Cod +
Any fuel

Food[edit]

Raw cod restores 2 (Hunger.svg) and 0.4 saturation.

Cats[edit]

Raw cod can be used to tame ocelots[Legacy Console Edition only], get cats off of chests, and beds, breed cats, and make baby cats grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time.

Raw cod can be used to gain ocelot trust, breed and make baby ocelot grow up by 10%.‌[Bedrock and PlayStation 4 editions only]

Dolphins[edit]

Dolphins can be fed raw cod. Doing this will improve their trust with the player, and interact with them more. However, unlike most animals, this will not cause them to breed.

Additionally, dolphins will swim to the nearest chest in an underwater ruins or shipwreck structure when they are fed raw cod. If the chest in the nearest structure is broken, they will instead swim to the nearest structure that has a chest.

Trading[edit]

Fisherman villagers have 50% chance to sell 6 cooked cod for 6 raw cod and 1 emerald as part of their first tier trade.

Apprentice-level fisherman villagers have a 23 chance to buy 15 raw cod for an emerald in Java Edition, and will always offer the same trade in Bedrock Edition.
