— Duncan Geere[1] |
Wool is a block obtained from sheep that can be dyed in any of the 16 different colors, which are white, orange, magenta, light blue, yellow, lime, pink, gray, light gray, cyan, purple, blue, brown, green, red, and black. Unlike certain blocks such as terracotta, there exists no undyed wool variant.
Contents
Natural generation[edit]
All wool colors (except magenta, pink, and purple) generate naturally as part of structures within woodland mansions.
White and yellow wool generate in shepherd houses, fletcher houses, and meeting points in plains villages.
White wool generates as woolen tents in pillager outposts.
Obtaining[edit]
Wool can be broken using any tool, but shears are the fastest tool to use.
Block | Wool | |
---|---|---|
Hardness | 0.8 | |
Breaking time | ||
Hand | 1.25 | |
Shears | 0.25 |
Sheep[edit]
Using shears on an adult sheep yields 1-3 wool. If unshorn, sheep drop 1 wool upon death. The wool dropped is the same color as the sheep. The drop rates are not affected by the Fortune or Looting enchantments.
White, light gray, gray, black, brown, and (rarely) pink wool can be found naturally on sheep. Getting a sheep of a different color requires dyeing the sheep.
Chest loot[edit]
Black wool can be found in 33.0% of village shepherd chests in stacks of 1–3.
White wool can be found in 55.8% of village shepherd chests in stacks of 1–8.
Gray wool can be found in 23.3% of village shepherd chests in stacks of 1–3.
Light gray wool can be found in 23.3% of village shepherd chests in stacks of 1–3.
Brown wool can be found in 23.3% of village shepherd chests in stacks of 1–3.
Trading[edit]
Shepherd villagers sell all colors of wool for a price of 1 or 2 emeralds for one wool as part of their tier 2 trades.[LCE only]
Apprentice-level Shepherd villagers have a 50% chance to sell one colored wool for an emerald, giving each wool color a 1⁄32 (3.125%) chance of being offered.[BE only]
Apprentice-level Shepherd villagers have a 2⁄7 chance of selling one or two colored wool for an emerald, giving each wool color a 1⁄56 (roughly 1.786%) chance of being offered.[JE only]

Trivia[edit]
- In Bedrock Edition, the data values for wool and their respective dyes are the inverse of each other. This is also true for stained glass, terracotta, shulker boxes, beds, banners, concrete powder, and concrete.
