potion

Potions are bottled substances. Most of them are brewable items, many of which give the consumer a time-limited effect when drunk.

Obtaining[edit]

Potion brewing chart (most efficient recipes, excludes splash and lingering potions).

Witches[edit]

Witches can drop potions of Healing, Fire Resistance, Swiftness, and Water Breathing, but only when they die while drinking that potion.

Wandering traders[edit]

Wandering traders have a chance to drop potions of Invisibility, but only when they die drinking the potion.

Fishing[edit]

Glass bottles may be caught as junk when fishing.

Filling bottles[edit]

Using a glass bottle on a water source block or a cauldron that has water will turn it into a water bottle. Using a glass bottle on a cauldron that contains potion will turn it into a bottle of that potion.‌[Bedrock Edition only] Using a glass bottle on a cauldron also removes 13 of that cauldron's contents.

Brewing[edit]

Almost all potions can be obtained by brewing, starting with the water bottle as the base.

The potion of Luck‌[JE & LCE only] and the potion of Decay‌[BE & LCE only] cannot be brewed. A potion of luck can be obtained via commands such as /give @s minecraft:potion{Potion:luck}, while a potion of decay can generate rarely in a cauldron in a swamp hut. Both are also available through the creative inventory.

Natural generation[edit]

Two Instant Health II potions can be found in a brewing stand on ships in end cities, and one splash potion of Weakness can be found in a brewing stand in igloo basements.

The cauldron in swamp huts contains a random potion, making it the only way to obtain potion of Decay in survival.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

In Bedrock Edition Potion of Regeneration can be found in 34.3% of buried treasure chests in stacks of 1.

In Bedrock Edition Potion of Water Breathing can be found in 46.9% of buried treasure chests in stacks of 1.

Usage[edit]

Potions can be used by pressing and holding use, similarly to eating food. Upon using, they will apply the corresponding status effect to the player.

Modifiers[edit]

Potions can be modified in five ways. The first is by adding glowstone to enhance the effect level. The second is by adding redstone to extend the duration of the effect. The third is by adding gunpowder to make a potion a splash potion. The fourth is by adding dragon's breath to turn a splash potion into a lingering potion. The fifth is by adding a fermented spider eye to corrupt the effect, if corruptable, turning it into a different one. The result of a corruption is usually the inverse of the original effect (for example: Swiftness to Slowness).

Corrupting an extended or enhanced potion usually results in a corrupted potion with the same modifier applied, if it is supported by the corrupted effect. Of the four corrupted potions, Harming is the only one which cannot be extended, and also the only one which can be enhanced.

Some potions cannot be enhanced. For example, the Potion of Invisibility cannot be enhanced, as players cannot be more invisible than they normally are.

Base potions[edit]

Base potions are potions that are created first to brew into other potions. Base potions have no effect when the player drinks them.

Icon Name Use
Water Bottle The starting point for every potion
Awkward Potion The base for all effect potions
(Potions of Weakness can alternatively be brewed directly from water bottles)
Thick Potion No use
Mundane Potion No use

Effect potions[edit]

Note that the duration of an enhanced potion is generally half the duration of its base potion, and that the duration of an extended potion is generally 2 23 the duration of its base potion.

Uncraftable Potion[edit]

In Java Edition, the uncraftable potion is a potion with no effect that is unobtainable in regular gameplay. It is also available in splash potion and lingering potion forms, as well as for tipped arrows.

It can be obtained using the following command: /give @s minecraft:potion{Potion:"minecraft:empty"}. It is also obtained any time a potion has invalid or missing potion effect tags, and thus serves as a placeholder.

Filling cauldrons[edit]

In Bedrock and Legacy Console editions, cauldrons can be filled up with water, dyed water, and potions. Tapping the cauldron with a potion or water bottle will add one level of the respective fluid to the cauldron. If the cauldron is already filled with a different fluid, the cauldron is emptied instead.

Custom effects[edit]

In Java Edition, potions can be obtained with any status effect using /give and the tag CustomPotionEffects, which is an array of effects for the potion. See Item format#Potion Effects for more information, and status effect for a list of effects and IDs.

Data values[edit]

Item data[edit]

Java Edition[edit]

  •  tag: The item's tag tag.
    •  CustomPotionEffects: The custom potion effects (status effects) this potion or tipped arrow has.
      • One of these for each effect.
        •  Id: The numeric ID of the effect.
        •  Amplifier: The amplifier of the effect, with level I having value 0. Negative levels are discussed here. Optional, and defaults to level I.
        •  Duration: The duration of the effect in ticks. Values 0 or lower are treated as 1. Optional, and defaults to 1 tick.
        •  Ambient: 1 or 0 (true/false) - whether or not this is an effect provided by a beacon and therefore should be less intrusive on the screen. Optional, and defaults to false. Due to a bug, it has no effect on splash potions.
        •  ShowParticles: 1 or 0 (true/false) - whether or not this effect produces particles. Optional, and defaults to true. Due to a bug, it has no effect on splash potions.
        •  ShowIcon: 1 or 0 (true/false) - true if effect icon is shown. false if no icon is shown.
    •  Potion: The name of the default potion effect. This name differs from the status effect name. For example, the value for an "Instant Health II" potion is "minecraft:strong_healing". A potion or tipped arrow getting its effects from this tag is named with the proper effect. The default value is "minecraft:empty", which gives it the "Uncraftable" name.
    •  CustomPotionColor: The item uses this custom color, and area-of-effect clouds, arrows, and splash and lingering potions use it for their particle effects. This color does not extend, however, to the particles given off by entities who ultimately receive the effect. The numeric color code are calculated from the Red, Green and Blue components using this formula: Red<<16 + Green<<8 + Blue. For positive values larger than 0x00FFFFFF, the top byte is ignored. All negative values produce white.

Normal potions use an NBT "Potion" tag to indicate the potion type. The values of the tag (to be prefixed with minecraft:) are:

Potion Regular Level II Extended
Uncraftable Potion empty
Water Bottle water
Mundane Potion mundane
Thick Potion thick
Awkward Potion awkward

History[edit]

Java Edition Beta
July 7, 2010Alchemy was first hinted by Notch when he explained why redstone ore disintegrates into "dust". He states that dust will be used later in potions.
Java Edition
1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease 2Jeb tweeted a screenshot showing potion durations and glass bottles.[4]
Potions are brewed using cauldrons[1] by combining ingredients and other potions in cauldrons. Cauldrons, although they are functional and can be used to brew potions, are unavailable in this update.
In total, there are 161 possible potion combinations and 2,653 different types of potions.[2]
Jeb later tweeted that both he and Notch had come up with a different way to brew potions, which was revealed to be brewing stands.[3]
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3Brewing stands are now implemented, replacing the (previously unimplemented) cauldrons' brewing functionality, so potions are now obtainable withouts mods.

Issues[edit]

Issues relating to "Potion" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

Trivia[edit]

  • Taking a potion while already under the effects of the same potion does not add onto the effects time, but simply resets it. A potion effect will not "downgrade" if a lower level is activated. For example, if a player has Regeneration II, drinking a regular Potion of Regeneration will not have any effect.
  • A potion can reach a maximum tier of 127, but using the /effect command, effect levels can reach 255.
  • When a player drinks two potions by quickly switching to another potion immediately after drinking one, the second drinking animation will not be shown.
  • An Instant Damage IV potion is powerful enough to instantly kill players.
  • Potion of Poison II lasts for 22.5 seconds, but it is displayed as 22 seconds because the item hover display only shows rounded-down integer values.
  • All potions are renewable, as long as they can be brewed. The bottles can be obtained from a witch (as can some potions), glass can be purchased from librarian villagers to craft into bottles, and already filled ones can be fished up. All potion ingredients from then on have renewable ingredients, provided blocks of farmland, water and soul sand exist in the world.
  • Potions of Harming will not harm undead mobs (Zombies, Skeletons, etc.) and instead heals them. Likewise, Potions of Healing will damage undead mobs.
  • Potions of Regeneration will not harm undead mobs, but will not heal them either.
  • Potions of Poison will not heal undead mobs, but will not harm them either.
  • If a player uses a Potion of Night Vision in the End, the Endermen and end portal will appear to be white when far enough away.
  • The "Local Brewery" advancement uses the Regeneration Potion texture for its picture.
  • Potion of the Turtle Master is the only potion that gives multiple effects (Slowness and Resistance).
