You know what would be fun? If every single animal in minecraft came from eggs. Breeding would involve moving egg blocks around.

Notch [1]

A spawn egg[a] is an item used to spawn mobs directly.

Obtaining[edit]

[more information needed] Spawn eggs can only be obtained in Creative mode, or using commands. In Creative mode, the player can press pick block on an existing mob to obtain their respective egg. Spawn eggs are also available in the Creative inventory. There are 58 eggs in the Java Edition, 59 eggs in the Bedrock Edition and PlayStation 4 Edition, and 41 eggs in the New Nintendo 3DS Edition.

Commands[edit]

Spawn eggs can be obtained by using /give. See here for all available spawn eggs and commands. For some reason, the spawn egg command never works, thus not allowing the player to have it. In earlier versions of the game, the player could spawn an entity with that spawn egg to spawn rare mobs such as the wither boss.

Any spawn eggs not listed in the table below cannot spawn entities. They will instead make a sound as though an arrow has been shot. These eggs will be the default color, in Java Edition white with gray spots, while in Bedrock Edition it will be pitch black. When a player hovers over the image with their mouse the name of the egg is "Spawn ". This egg has no specific properties and cannot spawn any mob, except for Bedrock Edition in which some "hidden" spawn eggs that spawn other entities like primed TNT and wither skulls. They can only be obtained via inventory editing, or with some add-ons, default blank spawn egg texture used on custom mobs if not defined in resource pack. [needs testing]

Usage[edit]

A spawn egg is used by pressing use on any surface (top, bottom or side) with the egg. When used on a top surface, the egg's mob will appear with its feet immediately adjacent to the surface.

Spawn eggs are not thrown (unlike normal eggs); the player must be within normal range of the block to use the spawn egg. Hostile and neutral mobs (except wolves, polar bears, pandas, dolphins, and llamas) spawned while on Peaceful difficulty will be created, but then instantly deleted from the world.

The surfaces of blocks are prioritised for spawning; if none are within reach, mobs can also be spawned in water.

Dispensers[edit]

A spawn egg fired from a dispenser will spawn the mob directly in front of the dispenser.

Baby mobs[edit]

If a passive mob has a baby form, and the player uses its spawn egg on an adult, it will spawn a baby version of that mob, rather than an adult. Other mobs such as evokers, vindicators and vexes don’t breed. Certain mobs such as polar bears and zombies, while not being able to breed, do have baby variants; using a spawn egg on these will not spawn a baby variant (with the exception of polar bears, skeleton horses and zombie horses).[2]

Spawners[edit]

Any spawn egg can also be used on a spawner to change the mob the spawner spawn. in Bedrock Edition, spawn eggs for any of the fish mobs will only spawn them if the spawner is waterlogged.

Renaming[edit]

Spawn eggs can be renamed on an anvil, and when used will spawn mobs with that name appearing over their head. Their names can only be seen if they are aimed at from four or fewer blocks away. This name will also appear in death messages from the mob killing a player. If the player renames a spawn egg by the names described below, the mob will appear described below. If the player renames a rabbit spawn egg "Toast", the secret skin of the rabbit appears when the egg is used. When a spawn egg is named "Dinnerbone" or "Grumm", it will cause the mob to appear upside down and show the given name above it. Renaming a vindicator "Johnny" will cause it to act hostile to all mobs except to few mobs such as another illager.

Item data[edit]

Java Edition[edit]

  •  tag: The item's tag tag.
    •  EntityTag: Stores entity data that is applied to the entity when created.

Bedrock Edition[edit]

  •  tag: The item's tag tag.
    •  ItemIdentifier: The entity's string ID.

When using the /give command to give a spawn egg, it requires the numeric ID of an entity; for example: /give <playername> spawn_egg 1 33 would give an egg that spawns a creeper. For reference, see Bedrock Edition data values#Entity_IDs for a complete list of entity IDs.

Eggs can be given not just for mobs listed in the table above, but for a few other entities. These eggs will be uncolored (white with gray spots), and will be called by unlocalized placeholder names, or simply, "Spawn".

  • The snow golem (21), iron golem (20) and item (64) spawn eggs can be given, but will spawn nothing.
  • The ender crystal spawn egg (71) produces an end crystal.
  • The boat (90) egg will place a boat on the ground.
  • Using any other entity ID will fail to give the egg.
  • The painting and player spawn egg instantly crashes the game.

History[edit]

This page would benefit from the addition of more images.
Please remove this notice once you've added suitable images to the article. The specific instructions are: unknown spawn egg in Bedrock Edition from 1.8.0 onward
Java Edition
1.111w49a Added spawn eggs for creeper, spider, skeleton, zombie, slime, ghast, zombie pigman, enderman, cave spider, silverfish, blaze, magma cube, pig, sheep, cow, chicken, squid, wolf, mooshroom and villager.
The spawn egg has a single texture file, which is tinted different colors.
12w01a The spawn egg and its markings will now have their textures separated, allowing them to have entirely different colors. This allows their colors to better match the colors of the mobs themselves.
1.2.112w03aSpawn eggs can now be placed into a dispenser. Activating the dispenser will spawn the mob, instead of dispensing the egg as an item.
Spawn eggs are now stackable, which allows dispensers to hold more than nine of them at one time.
12w04a Added ocelot spawn eggs with the addition of the ocelot itself.
Before 1.2, edited spawn eggs for snow golems, ender dragons and giants (and other "unspawnable" mobs) produced mobs of their types. Now, this is restricted to those eggs available in the creative inventory.
1.3.112w18aVillagers spawned from spawn eggs were always farmers before this update and now their professions are randomized.
1.4.212w32aZombie villager can now be spawned using zombie spawn eggs.
Sheep from spawn eggs can now spawn naturally-colored sheep (white, gray, brown, pink, etc.).
12w36aWither skeletons will now have a high chance to spawn from a skeleton spawn egg, if the player is in the Nether.
Skeletons on spider jockeys can now be replaced with wither skeletons when using spider spawn eggs in the Nether.
12w38a Added witch and bat spawn eggs.
1.4.4preBaby mobs are now spawn-able by right-clicking a mob with a corresponding mob egg. Although, this doesn't work with zombies.
1.5January 7, 2013Dinnerbone tweeted the first image of a renamed mob appearing in a death message.
13w02aMobs spawned from renamed eggs will now have the name of the egg and the names will appear in death messages.

1.814w11a Added endermite spawn eggs.
14w25a Added guardian spawn eggs.
14w27a Added rabbit spawn eggs.
14w28bEggs can now be used to program monster spawner blocks.
1.915w31a Added shulker spawn eggs.
15w33aSpawn eggs can now no longer be addressed by numeric data id, like: give @p spawn_egg 1 50. The spawnable item from a spawn egg is now addressed by a datatag: give @p spawn_egg 1 {EntityTag:{id:"Creeper"} }.
1.1016w20a Added spawn eggs for polar bears, wither skeletons, strays, husks, elder guardian, cats, donkeys, mules, skeleton horses and zombie horses.
pre2Removed spawn eggs for wither skeleton, stray, husk, elder guardian, cat, donkey, mule, skeleton horse and zombie horse that were added in 16w20a.

Added a zombie villager spawn egg. It can only spawn zombie farmers.

16w39a Added spawn eggs for evoker, llama, vex and vindicator.
1.1217w13a Added spawn egg for parrot.
