You can even modify an existing huge mushroom into a house if you want to, by adding some walls and a door. They're the perfect size for a small outpost away from your main base, when you only need the essentials with you. And if anyone else finds it, they'll know that the person who lives there is a really, really fungi.

Duncan Geere[1]

Mushroom blocks[n 1] are solid blocks that make up huge mushrooms.

There are 3 kinds of mushroom blocks: Red Mushroom Block, Brown Mushroom Block and Mushroom Stem.

Obtaining[edit]

Huge mushroom blocks are most quickly broken with an axe, dropping 0–2 mushroom items of the respective type.

The blocks themselves can only be retrieved with tool enchanted with Silk Touch. In Java Edition, mining the mushroom cap or stem yields a block with the cap or stem texture, respectively, on all sides. In Bedrock Edition, mining the stem yields a block with the stem texture on the sides and the pore texture on the top and bottom, while mining the cap yields a block with the pore texture on all sides, but the latter are different blocks for brown and red caps (despite having the same texture). In Bedrock Edition it cannot obtain blocks with the cap texture in Survival mode.

Additionally in Java Edition, if two similar mushroom blocks are placed next to each other and one of them is broken, the side of the other block that it was facing, will reveal the pore texture. This is because the side of these blocks will change texture if they're touching another block of the same type.

Block Hardness Tool Breaking time[note 1]
Hand Wooden Stone Iron Diamond Golden Shears Sword

  1. Times are for unenchanted tools in seconds. For more information, see Haste § Instant mining.

Huge mushrooms[edit]

Mushroom blocks generate as part of huge mushroom structures.

Creative inventory[edit]

In Java Edition, the brown and red mushroom blocks as well as the mushroom stem are available in the Creative inventory.

In Bedrock and Legacy Console editions, all-sided cap, stem and pore blocks are available in the Creative inventory. Other variants can be obtained by the /give command or by inventory editing.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

Usage[edit]

Fuel[edit]

Mushroom blocks can be used as fuel, lasting 1.5 smelting operations per block.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

Composting[edit]

Mushroom blocks can be used in the composter with an 85% chance to make a new layer.

History[edit]

Java Edition Beta
June 14, 2011Notch showed a picture of a Beta 1.7 change-list. Although it was completely blurred out and was at first thought of as a joke, Notch later stated that one of the pictures with the new lighting system and the change list had a secret in them.
One place where people discussed it was on the Minecraft Forums, where it was discovered that the tabs at the top of the change list, which were partly covered, could be decoded based on the one pixel tall pattern available in the image.[2]
After a user named "tmcaffeine" successfully decoded the image, the tabs read: ExperienceOrb.java, changelist.txt, Level.java, Tile.java, HugeMushroomTile.jav(a?), HugeMushroomFeature.(java?), RandomLevelSource(cut).[3]
This led people to believe that huge mushrooms would be added, and indeed, later on Notch revealed a screenshot on Google+ in which two huge mushrooms could be seen as well as a village.

There is no longer any distinction between brown and red mushroom stems, and the stem block is now a separate block from the caps.
Mushroom stems no longer drop (small) mushrooms when broken, but can now drop as stem blocks when mined with a Silk Touch tool.
Prior to The Flattening, these blocks' numeral IDs were 99 and 100.
