Minecraft Forge is a free, open source mod loader designed to simplify compatibility between mods in Minecraft. The end-user must play the version of Minecraft that Forge was downloaded for before it can be used.
Almost all mods nowadays use Forge. Some mods that support Forge are listed on its website.
The user may want to see if the mod they want supports Forge. The mods file is loaded on
%appdata%\.minecraft\mods and make sure run the forge at least the first time

What are mods?
- Full info at: Mods.
Mods modify the game. Mods will only work with a certain Minecraft version, although it's not impossible to get a mod for an older version. The compatible version is usually displayed on the mod's download page. Many modders still use 1.7 to mod because of fewer limitations and easier file access.
Forge mods only work with Forge. Forge processes mods differently than Modloader, so only certain mods can work with the two.
