Milk buckets were added to Minecraft in Alpha version 1.0.8, at the same time as the game’s other bovine delights: leather and cows. Originally it had no function, and wasn't even craftable. A few versions later it became possible to make it by milking a cow with a bucket, and in Beta version 1.2 it became part of the recipe for cake. But it wasn't until Beta version 1.8 before it became drinkable. So what does drinking milk do? Other than giving you strong bones and healthy teeth, it also happens to cure any pesky status effects that might be afflicting you. Wither? No way! Poison? Nuh-uh! Slow fall? Plunge to the ground!

A milk bucket[a] is a drink and ingredient obtained from cows or mooshrooms.
Cows and mooshrooms
Milk buckets can be obtained from cows and mooshrooms by pressing use while looking at them with an empty bucket.
A milk bucket has a chance of dropping from a wandering trader, if the trader is killed while holding it.[Java Edition only]
Holding use with a milk bucket starts the drinking sound and animation. The animation is shown only in first-person camera mode.[Java and Bedrock editions only]
When consumed, milk immediately removes any status effects from the player. Drinking milk does not remove the benefits of area status effects granted by Beacons, Conduit Power, or Hero of the Village[Bedrock Edition only].
Fire is not a status effect; therefore, drinking milk doesn't extinguish a burning player.
In Bedrock Edition, milk buckets use data value to determine contents. Once used, each data value is set to 0 (Empty Bucket). If no data value is provided, data value is 0.
