Melon seeds are an item that can be used to grow melon plants.

Natural generation[edit]

Melon stems generate naturally in stem farm inside woodland mansions.

Melon stems can generate in savanna and desert village farms.

Obtaining[edit]

Chest loot[edit]

Melon seeds can be found in 18.5% of dungeon chests, 31.6% of chest minecarts in Mineshafts, and 18.5% of woodland mansion chests, all in stacks of 2–4.

In Bedrock Edition, they can be found in 33.3% of bonus chests in stacks of 1–2.

Melon stems[edit]

Melon stems, when destroyed, drop 0–3 seeds. The odds of dropping 0, 1, 2 and 3 seeds are 100125, 20125, 4125 and 1125, respectively. In the long run, this comes to 0.248 seeds dropped per melon stem.

Crafting[edit]

Ingredients Crafting recipe

Trading[edit]

Wandering traders sell melon seeds for 1 emerald.

Usage[edit]

Farming[edit]

Melon seeds can be planted only on farmland. Over time, they grow into a stem and produce a melon on any adjacent dirt, grass, or farmland block. If a melon is already occupying an adjacent dirt/grass or farmland spot, the stem does not grow any more melons until the melon is removed. A single stem can grow an unlimited number of melons. Like other seeds, they need a certain amount of light to grow and produce melons. Melon seeds are affected by bone meal only with respect to stem growth; bone meal does not help produce the actual melons.

Breeding[edit]

Melon seeds can be used to breed chickens, lead chickens around, and make baby chickens grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time.

Taming[edit]

Like other seeds, melon seeds can be used to tame parrots.

Composting[edit]

Placing melon seeds into a composter has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Melon Stem[edit]

A melon stem is the block that is planted on farmland when melon seeds are used on it. It starts underground, and rises up as the plant grows. The stem is colored green when young, and then brown once fully grown.

The stem curves once a melon has grown from it. A fully-grown single stem connects to any melon in an adjacent square, thus there are 5 possible appearances to a stem. If there are multiple melons it can connect to, it favors the east, then west, north, and south. When the melon is removed, the stem returns to its straight shape.

Melon stems are technical blocks that cannot be obtained as items.‌[Java Edition only] But they can be obtained via inventory editing or add-ons in Bedrock Edition.‌[Bedrock Edition only]
