Llamas are neutral mobs which can be tamed and used to transport large shipments of items.
Contents
Spawning[edit]
Llamas spawn at light level 7 or above, they naturally spawn in savanna biomes in herds of up to four and in mountains biomes in herds up to six animals. They come in four variants of wool colours: brown, cream, white, gray. Wandering traders always spawn with two leashed trader llamas.
In Bedrock Edition, 10% of llama spawn as babies.
In Bedrock Edition, there is no spawn egg for trader llamas. They will always spawn when a wandering trader is spawned using a spawn egg or by using the /summon
command, however trader llama can be summoned using /summon llama ~ ~ ~ minecraft:from_wandering_trader
Drops[edit]
Adults drop:
- 0-2 leather (up to 0-5 with Looting 3).
- Any equipped carpets.
- All items in their inventory.
- 1–3 experience orbs, only if killed by a tamed wolf or the player.
Usage[edit]
Leading[edit]
Llamas do not accept saddles, so the player can't control one's movement when riding one, even when tamed. Thus, leads become the best way to move llamas. Leading a llama actually signals up to ten surrounding llamas (both tamed and untamed) to follow each other, forming a caravan. A caravan can have up to ten[2] llamas in it, including babies. Leashing a second llama forms a caravan of ten more llamas, so there theoretically is no limit on the number of llamas following a player.
Storage[edit]
Llamas can be equipped with chests, giving it 3, 6, 9, 12, or 15 slots of inventory space, according to the NBT-tag Strength
(see § Data values below). The storage available is 3*Strength
. Once equipped, the chest cannot be unequipped from the llama without killing it.
Decoration[edit]
Llamas can be equipped with carpets in their carpet slot (). Each carpet color shows as a different patterned rug on the llamas back. This can be useful for color-coding items, similar to dyed Shulker Boxes.
For the purposes of the /replaceitem
command, a llama carries its carpet in the slot.horse.armor
slot.
Trader Llamas have a unique, blue carpet design as their base skin.[BE & JE only] It can be replaced with any of the carpets for a different look, but cannot be removed.
Behavior[edit]
Spitting[edit]
Llamas are neutral, and if a player or mob attacks one, it will spit at the attacker once, dealing 1 damage. They are hostile to untamed wolves and will spit at them without provocation. Sometimes when they spit at a wolf or player they can start a fight within a group of llamas by accidentally hitting each other. Trader llamas are also hostile toward all zombie variants and illagers,[Java Edition only]and will attack if hit or if players and other mobs hurt the wandering trader they are leashed to.
Llamas will tend to repel wolves with their spitting, depending on their strength value. For llamas with strength 4 and 5, wolves will always run away,[3] and for weaker llamas, wolves will run away correspondingly less often.
Llamas won't attack tamed wolves (dogs) unless provoked.
Taming[edit]
Llamas can be tamed by pressing use on the llama while holding nothing or a spawn egg[more information needed], until it shows hearts.
Taming depends on the llama's Temper
nbt value. Despite its name, a higher Temper
value will make it more likely for a llama to become tamed. Llamas begin with a Temper
value of 0, with a maximum of 100. When a player is riding an untamed llama, a random number from 0 to 99 is chosen. The llama gets tamed successfully if this number is less than the Temper
value, otherwise, the Temper
is increased by 5 and the player is bucked off. Temper
can also be increased by feeding the llama.
Naturally spawned trader llamas are untamed and unrideable, but when unleashed from wandering trader, the trader llamas become tamable[Java Edition only] or tamed[Bedrock Edition only].
Like all tame animals, a death message will be displayed to their owner if tamed llama or tamed trader llama are killed.
Breeding[edit]
Tamed llamas can be bred using hay bales. Both llamas must be tamed before they can breed. Trader llamas cannot breed.[Bedrock Edition only]
The children will take on the appearance of one of the parents as if by a coin flip. The strength is chosen as a random integer between 1 and the strength of the stronger parent, inclusive. 3% of the time the resulting strength is increased by 1, but it's still capped at 5. For quick reference, consult the following table.
Wild | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 32.8% | 97% | 48.5% | 32.33% | 24.25% | 19.4% |
2 | 32.8% | 3% | 50% | 33.33% | 25% | 20% |
3 | 32.8% | 1.5% | 33.33% | 25% | 20% | |
4 | 0.8% | 1% | 25% | 20% | ||
5 | 0.8% | 0.75% | 20.6% |
Select a column based on the stronger parent. Wild means there are no parents, e.g. a llama spawned by world generation or a spawn egg. Select a row to find the probability of the resulting llama having a specific strength.
Llamas will breed in the vicinity if they are on a lead. Although one of llamas may not respond to being fed right away; they will take a hay bale/bale(s) if needed to breed. This can result in the consumption from 1 to 3 hay bales.
Food[edit]
Feeding a llama food can alter its behavior, cause it to grow (if it is not yet an adult; babies normally take 20 minutes to fully mature if not fed), and restore its health. The table below lists the effects of the 2 food items llamas will take.
To feed a llama, hold a valid food item and right click on the llama. If the food is invalid, the player will simply mount the llama. Llamas can only be fed when feeding would have an effect, similar to other animals.

Spit[edit]
Llama spit has entity data associated with it that contain various properties of the spit entity. It produces spit particles when summoned, and obeys gravity. The spit entity must belong to a llama to deal damage, meaning that the spit summoned by commands deals no damage.

Entity data[edit]
Llamas have entity data associated with them that contains various properties of the mob.
- Entity data
- Tags common to all entities see Template:Nbt inherit/entity/template
- Tags common to all mobs see Template:Nbt inherit/mob/template
- Additional fields for mobs that can breed see Template:Nbt inherit/breedable/template
- Bred: 1 or 0 (true/false) - Unknown. Remains 0 after breeding. If true, causes it to stay near other llamas with this flag set.
- ChestedHorse: 1 or 0 (true/false) - true if the llama has chests.
- EatingHaystack: 1 or 0 (true/false) - true if grazing.
- Tame: 1 or 0 (true/false) - true if the llama is tamed. (Non players mobs will not be able to ride a tamed llama if it has no saddle)
- Temper: Ranges from 0 to 100; increases with feeding. Higher values make a llama easier to tame.
- Variant: The variant of the llama. 0 = Creamy, 1 = White, 2 = Brown, 3 = Gray.
- Strength: Ranges from 1 to 5, defaults to 3. Determines the number of items the llama can carry (items = 3 × strength). Also increases the tendency of wolves to run away when attacked by llama spit. Strengths 4 and 5 will cause a wolf to always run away.
- DecorItem: The item the llama is wearing, without the Slot tag. Typically a carpet.
- Tags common to all items see Template:Nbt inherit/item/template
- OwnerUUID: Contains the UUID of the player that tamed the llama. Has no effect on behavior.
- Items: List of items. Only exists if ChestedHorse is true.
- An item, including the Slot tag.
- Tags common to all items see Template:Nbt inherit/item/template
- An item, including the Slot tag.
- DespawnDelay: Only present in
trader_llama
. A timer for trader llamas to despawn.

Issues[edit]
Issues relating to "Llama" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.
Trivia[edit]
- The llama is the only rideable mob in the game that does not require a saddle. Instead, it requires a carpet.
- Llama still float when riding while on water deeper than 2 block.
- The player can still see a llama's carpet decoration when it is under the effect of Invisibility.
- When breeding two trading llamas, the offspring will be wearing a baby-sized, trader-style carpet.[Java Edition only]
- The achievement title refers to the 1980 comedy movie "Caddyshack", where Bill Murray tells a story of how he once caddied for the Dalai Lama. In return, on his deathbed he will receive total consciousness, thus uttering the famous line "So I got that going for me".
- In Java and Legacy Console editions, llamas are the only mob that can directly inflict damage to players in Peaceful difficulty.[4].
- Some carpets on llamas back represent certain mobs: creeper or enderman.
- Interestingly, a llama wearing a gray carpet has a mask, similar to that of a superhero.
