Llamas are neutral mobs that can be tamed and used to transport large shipments of items.

Spawning

Llamas spawn at light level 7 or above. They naturally spawn in savanna biomes in herds of 4 llamas and in mountains biomes in herds of 4 to 6 llamas. They come in four variants of coat colors: brown, cream, white, gray. Wandering traders always spawn with two leashed trader llamas.

10% of llamas spawn as babies.

In Bedrock Edition, there is no spawn egg for trader llamas. They always spawn when a wandering trader is spawned using a spawn egg or by using the /summon command, although a trader llama can be summoned using /summon llama ~ ~ ~ minecraft:from_wandering_trader.

Drops

Adults drop:

Upon successful breeding, 1–7 is dropped.

Usage

Leading

Llamas do not accept saddles, so the player can't control one's movement, even when tamed. Thus, leads are the best way to move llamas. Leading a llama actually signals up to ten nearby llamas (both tamed and untamed) to follow each other, forming a caravan. A caravan can have up to nine llamas in it, including the lead, whether it's an adult or a baby. Leashing a second llama forms a caravan of ten more llamas, and there is no intentional limit on the number of llamas following a player.

Storage

A llama can be equipped with a chest by right clicking a chest on it once tamed, giving it 3, 6, 9, 12, or 15 slots of inventory space, scaling directly with its Strength NBT (see § Data values below). Once equipped, the chest cannot be retrieved without killing the llama. A llama's potential carry capacity is a number of item slots equal to 3*Strength.

Decoration

Llamas can be equipped with carpets in their carpet slot (). Each carpet color shows as a different patterned rug on the llama's back. This can be useful for color-coding their storage, similar to dyed shulker boxes.

For the purposes of the /replaceitem command, a llama carries its carpet in the horse.armor slot.

Trader llamas that do not have a carpet wear a blue rug design. It can be replaced with a carpet but not removed. When given carpets, both types of llama look the same.

Behavior

Spitting

Llamas are neutral, but if a player or mob attacks one, it spits at the attacker once to deal 1♥ damage. Sometimes their spit can miss their target and hit another llama, starting a fight within a group of llamas. Additionally, a wandering trader's llamas spit at mobs or players who attack the wandering trader.

Llamas are hostile to wolves and spit without provocation, but they don't attack tamed wolves unless provoked. Wolves are fearful of llamas of strength 4 or 5 and always run away.[1] Wolves flee from weaker llamas less often.

Despite the spitting being a projectile, dying from llama spit still shows the death message "<player> was slain by Trader Llama/Llama."

Trader llamas are hostile toward all zombie variants and illagers,‌[Java Edition only] and they defend both themselves and their wandering trader.

The spit entity must belong to a llama to do damage, meaning that the spit summoned by commands does no damage. Llama spit can be deflected if hit by the player.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

Taming

Llamas can be tamed by repetitively riding them until hearts are displayed, done by pressing use on the llama while holding nothing. Taming success depends on the llama's Temper NBT. Temper is a positive trait, with higher values increasing the chance of successful taming. Llamas begin with a Temper value of 0 and a maximum of 100. When a player rides an untamed llama, a random number from 0 to 99 is chosen. The llama gets tamed successfully if this number is less than the Temper value, otherwise, the Temper is increased by 5 and the player is bucked off. Temper can also be increased by feeding the llama.

Unlike any other tamed animal, tamed llamas still retaliate at players.

Naturally spawned trader llamas are untamed and unrideable while being lead by their wandering trader. If unleashed, they become tamable‌[Java Edition only] or tamed.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

In Java Edition, tamed trader llamas do not despawn.

Like all tame animals, a death message is displayed to a tamed llama's owner if it is killed.

Breeding

Tamed llamas can be bred by being fed 1–3 hay bales. Both parents must be tamed before they can breed. Trader llamas cannot breed.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

The offspring takes on the appearance of one parent randomly. Its strength is chosen as a random integer between 1 and the strength of the stronger parent, inclusive. 3% of the time the resulting strength is increased by 1, but it is capped at 5.

Select a row based on the stronger parent. The column shows the probability of the resulting offspring having a given strength.

A llama's base health (15 to 30 hitpoints) is calculated based on that of its parents, in the same way as a horse's.

Llamas breed in the vicinity if they are on a lead. Although one of the llamas may not respond to being fed right away; they accept a hay bale/bale(s) if needed to breed. This can result in consumption from 1 to 3 hay bales.

Food

Feeding a llama food can alter its behavior, restoring lost health or making a baby grow faster (babies ordinarily take around 20 minutes to mature to adults). The table below lists the effects of the 2 food items llamas accept.

To feed a llama, hold a valid food item and press use while facing the llama. Llamas can be fed only when feeding would have an effect, similar to other animals. If the food is invalid, the player mounts the llama instead.

    •  Bred: 1 or 0 (true/false) - Unknown. Remains 0 after breeding. If true, causes it to stay near other llamas with this flag set.

    •  DecorItem: The item the llama is wearing, without the Slot tag. Typically a carpet.

Snowballs can be thrown by {{control|using}} them. There is no charging time or cooldown for firing them,{{Until|java Combat Tests}} meaning they can be thrown as fast as the player can click.

Like other projectiles, snowballs are affected by gravity: their range is the same as those of [[egg]]s and [[ender pearl]]s, less than that of [[arrow]]s fired from [[bow]]s, and more than that of [[splash potion]]s. In [[Bedrock Edition]], players will receive damage and will be knockbacked.

Snowballs deal {{hp|3}} each to [[blaze]]s but they deal no damage to other mobs. Mobs still receive knockback and act the same as if they were being damaged (for example, [[zombified piglin]]s who are hit by snowballs become aggressive). Players {{in|BE}} receive knockback, while players {{in|JE}} are unaffected.<ref>{{bug|MC-3179|||WAI}}</ref>{{Until|java Combat Tests}}

When fighting the [[ender dragon]], [[end crystal]]s are able to be destroyed by snowballs being thrown at them.

Snowball, like other projectiles, can be used to distract the [[warden]]. A warden walks towards the location where the snowball lands to inspect it, giving the player time to escape. However, if snowballs are fired too frequently (at least twice in 5 seconds), the warden walks straight to the player instead.

Gold nuggets can be used to craft a [[golden carrot]] or [[glistering melon]] for brewing. Also, gold nuggets can be combined with gunpowder and dye to create a [[firework star]] that bursts in a star-shaped explosion. 

[[Piglin]]s instantly pick up any gold nuggets that are within 1 [[block]] of them. Unlike other gold-related items, they do not intentionally seek out gold nuggets to pick up and only pick them up if they walk near it. Unlike gold ingots, gold nuggets picked up are dropped upon the piglin's death.

Enchanted iron helmet, enchanted iron leggings, enchanted crossbow, enchanted diamond chestplate, iron, gold and diamond horse armour, enchanted golden apple, saddle, enchanted diamond axe, enchanted iron pickaxe and enchanted iron Shovel. 

The trial key can currently be obtained from trial spawners (50%), or from pots and chests (8%).

A drowned can throw unlimited tridents, and these tridents cannot be picked up by the [[player]].

A [[villager]] can be turned into a [[zombie villager]] if it is killed by a trident thrown by a drowned: the chance of conversion is 0% on Easy [[difficulty]], 50% on Normal, and 100% on Hard and [[Hardcore]].

Pressing and holding {{control|use}} while holding a trident charges it. When released at half charge or more, the trident is thrown and deals damage to any [[entity]] it hits. Note that it doesn't have to be full charge for the complete damage and length. It flies on a ballistic trajectory similar to that of an [[arrow]], but at 80% strength. If the trident hits a block, it sticks to the block. If it hits an entity, it bounces off the entity and lands nearby. It is also blocked by [[shield]]s and can be retrieved once it lands in the ground. Thrown tridents can trigger wooden [[button]]s, wooden [[pressure plate]]s, and [[target]] blocks. A trident can be thrown at a [[chorus flower]] or [[pointed dripstone]] to break it, which causes the block to be dropped as its respective item.

If the player throws a Riptide trident and collides with a mob, the mob takes melee damage (including critical damage if the player is falling). {{IN|java}} tridents enchanted with Riptide take one durability damage upon throwing, and lose an additional 1 durability if it collides with an entity on both editions. Each level of Riptide increases the distance traveled by six blocks. The enchantment at level one launches the player nine blocks, fifteen blocks at level two, and twenty-one blocks at level three.

Tridents enchanted with [[Channeling]] summon a lightning bolt if there is a thunderstorm, although only upon hitting a mob or player standing in the rain as well as a [[Lightning Rod|lightning rod]] placed in the rain.

Unlike other projectiles, the trident does not slow down when thrown through water or lava.

Soul Speed enchanted books are only obtainable through [[bartering]], [[chest]] loot inside a bastion remnant, and [[fishing]]. They cannot be obtained through [[enchanting]] or [[trading]].

== Usage ==

In Survival, enchanted books are the only method to obtain certain enchantments on certain tools, such as Unbreaking on [[shield]]s. Enchanted books have a shine effect on their sprite.

To use an enchanted book, the player must place an item in the first slot in an [[anvil]], and a book in the next. In order to complete the enchantment, the player must have the required amount of [[experience]]. Note that using an enchanted book gets significant discounts at the anvil. Enchanted books themselves can be combined to create a single book with increased or multiple enchantments, similar to combining tools or weapons.  

When combining items, the compatible enchantments from the book in the second slot are transferred to the item from the first slot, keeping the highest level of any type. If two enchantments have the same level and a higher level is available, they combine into the next level. If a book is applied to an item that can't take all of its spells, the appropriate spells are transferred, while the unusable ones are lost. Enchanted books are single-use. 

Enchanted books do not exhibit their enchantment. For example, a book with Sharpness IV as an enchantment does no more damage than an un-enchanted book, or any non-weapon item, would when used as a weapon. An exception is the Fire Aspect book which can ignite TNT and light campfires and the Mending book if the block mined can be broken by fist.{{only|bedrock}}

The player can enchant any item with any enchantment in [[Creative]] mode, allowing any applied effects to exhibit themselves.{{only|java}} For example, a [[stick]] can be enchanted with [[Silk Touch]] to allow the player to successfully dig [[grass block]]s. The enchanted item can still be used in Survival mode without any loss of enchantments.

Enchantments that are normally incompatible are still incompatible; for example, Piercing and Multishot cannot be both applied to the same item, even in Creative mode.

=== Creating area effect clouds ===
Lingering potions are thrown, like [[splash potion]]s, by {{control|using}} them. On impact they explode, creating a cloud. The cloud is made of the potion particles corresponding to the potion that was thrown.  

The cloud starts with a radius of 3 blocks, decreasing to 0 over the course of 30 seconds. During the cloud's existence, any player or mob that walks into it after the first second gets the corresponding status effect; this decreases the radius by a {{frac|1|2}} block immediately, reducing the cloud's lifespan by 5 seconds.

For effects with duration, the duration applied by the cloud is {{frac|1|4}} that of the corresponding [[potion]]. For effects without duration such as healing or harming, the potency of the effect is {{frac|1|2}} that of the corresponding potion.

The effect may be applied consecutively if the player or mob remains in the cloud. For example, a player throwing the Lingering Potion of Healing II straight down consumes the cloud within a few seconds while being healed 5 times for a total of {{hp|20}} health. As far as healing is concerned, this makes the lingering potion much more powerful than the regular or splash potion, provided that the player is away from other mobs or players.

Lingering potions can also be thrown out of [[dispenser]]s like splash potions.

Players can create an enchanted book by enchanting a [[book]] on an [[enchantment table]]. Books have a decreased chance of getting multiple enchantments (specifically, if multiple enchantments would be added, then one is removed at random), and have a lower "enchantability level" than most other items. Treasure enchantments such as Mending cannot be obtained from an enchantment table.

Players can barter with [[piglin]]s by using or throwing [[gold ingot]]s, and doing so has a {{frac|5|459}} chance for piglins to give the player an enchanted book with any level of [[Soul Speed]]. Soul Speed enchanted books are only obtainable through [[bartering]], [[chest]] loot inside a bastion remnant, and [[fishing]]. They cannot be obtained through [[enchanting]] or [[trading]].

== Usage ==

In Survival, enchanted books are the only method to obtain certain enchantments on certain tools, such as Unbreaking on [[shield]]s. Enchanted books have a shine effect on their sprite.

To use an enchanted book, the player must place an item in the first slot in an [[anvil]], and a book in the next. In order to complete the enchantment, the player must have the required amount of [[experience]]. Note that using an enchanted book gets significant discounts at the anvil. Enchanted books themselves can be combined to create a single book with increased or multiple enchantments, similar to combining tools or weapons.  

When combining items, the compatible enchantments from the book in the second slot are transferred to the item from the first slot, keeping the highest level of any type. If two enchantments have the same level and a higher level is available, they combine into the next level. If a book is applied to an item that can't take all of its spells, the appropriate spells are transferred, while the unusable ones are lost. Enchanted books are single-use. 

Enchanted books do not exhibit their enchantment. For example, a book with Sharpness IV as an enchantment does no more damage than an un-enchanted book, or any non-weapon item, would when used as a weapon. An exception is the Fire Aspect book which can ignite TNT and light campfires and the Mending book if the block mined can be broken by fist.{{only|bedrock}}

The player can enchant any item with any enchantment in [[Creative]] mode, allowing any applied effects to exhibit themselves.{{only|java}} For example, a [[stick]] can be enchanted with [[Silk Touch]] to allow the player to successfully dig [[grass block]]s. The camera can be obtained in the [[Creative inventory]] in ''Minecraft Education''. It can be obtained either by NBT editors, inventory editors, or glitches in Bedrock Edition.

To get the block form of the camera in Bedrock Edition using an NBT editor, you need to set the item name of the block in the inventory slot (<code>name:</code> ) to <code>item.camera</code>, then you need to add a compound tag called <code>Block</code> and inside of that put the int tag <code>version: 18040335</code> and the text tag <code>name: minecraft:camera</code> into the block compound tag. [[Player]]s have two different food statistics, one of which is visible: The hunger level is visible, and the saturation level is not.

[[Saturation]] is the first statistic to decrease when a player performs energy-intensive actions, and it must be completely depleted before the visible hunger meter begins decreasing. Although the current saturation level is generally hidden, the player can tell that their saturation level is completely depleted if the visible hunger meter begins displaying a jittering effect.

Eating a food item replenishes a fixed number of hunger points and saturation points, based on the item. Some foods have a better ratio of saturation to hunger points replenished than others. Overeating the hunger bar does not overflow to saturation.

A player's current saturation level can never exceed their current hunger level. A player at a hunger level of 5, for example, can be at a maximum of 5 saturation. Food always restores hunger (raising the saturation limit) ''before'' supplying saturation. The most efficient use of food is to eat low-saturation food to fill the hunger bar, followed by high-saturation food to fill saturation.  While a few hunger points may be wasted when eating nourishing food when nearly full, eating nourishing foods on a low hunger bar wastes even more points of saturation.  Maximizing saturation increases the length of time (and/or the amount of damage healed) before the player needs to eat again.

Most foods can be eaten by holding down the right-click button with a food item in hand. It takes 1.61 seconds to eat most foods; dried kelp takes 0.865 seconds to eat. Additionally, a player can hold food in their [[offhand]] {{in|Java}}.

While eating, food [[particles]] form from the player's mouth correlated with their respective food item, and produces a munching noise. Eating also slows the user significantly.

Unlike other foods, [[cake]] has to be eaten by placing it, then right-clicking on its block form. Eating cake is instant and it has 7 edible slices, each giving {{hunger|2}} hunger and 0.4 hunger [[saturation]].

Trivia

  • In the way a bear's offspring are called cubs & a wolf's offspring are called pups, a llama's offspring are called cria.
  • Llamas still float when riding while on water deeper than 2 blocks.
  • The player can still see a llama's carpet decoration when it is under the effect of Invisibility.
  • When breeding two trading llamas, the cria wears a baby-sized, trader-style carpet.‌[Java Edition only]
  • The achievement title refers to the 1980 comedy movie "Caddyshack", where Bill Murray tells a story of how he once caddied for the Dalai Lama. In return, on his deathbed he expects to receive total consciousness, thus uttering the famous line "So I got that going for me".
  • In Java Edition, llamas are the only mob that can directly inflict damage to players in Peaceful difficulty.[2]
  • Some carpets on llamas back represent certain mobs: creeper or enderman. A llama wearing a gray carpet has a mask, similar to that of a superhero, or rather a bandit.
