Occurrence[edit]
Natural generation[edit]
Glass panes generate naturally as windows in villages, end cities and woodland mansions.
Orange and red stained glass panes generate in savanna village temples. Yellow stained glass panes generate in plains and savanna village temples. Brown stained glass panes generate in abandoned villages.
Obtaining[edit]
Glass panes can be Crafted using 6 glass blocks in the workbench. Alternatively, use a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. If one is broken without a silk-touch enchantment, it drops nothing.

Usage[edit]
Glass panes are much more efficient to use than glass; as six glass can be crafted into sixteen glass panes, windows built using glass panes can be up to 267% (16⁄6 × 100) larger in area than windows built with regular glass blocks.
In other words, with optimum placement, every six blocks of glass used to create a window can be used to create two windows of equal size out of glass panes with four glass panes left over.
Placement[edit]
If placed without anything on the sides, they appear as a thin vertical • shape, 2×2 pixels in size; but when something is placed on the sides, it becomes flat or turns into a or
or
shape depending on the items surrounding it. The collision box is identical to the shape of the pane, allowing both items and players to fit through 2×2 glass pane holes.
Glass panes are never horizontal.

Locking maps[edit]
Glass panes can be used in cartography tables to lock maps, which makes them unable to be filled again when exploring.
Trading[edit]
Apprentice-level cartographer villagers buy 11[JE & BE only] glass panes for an emerald as part of their trades.

Trivia[edit]
- If two glass panes are placed with one empty space in between, a spider (which is 2 blocks wide) can still fit through.
- Glass panes are called "thinGlass" in the game's code, but all glass pane texture files within minecraft.jar begin with the prefix "glass_pane" (e.g. "glass_pane_top.png")
- Due to its flat appearance in the inventory slot and the inventory being colored light gray, light gray stained glass panes almost appear invisible.[Java Edition only] They are intentionally designed to appear this way.[1]
