Mobs[edit]

Zombies and skeletons have a small chance to spawn wearing any armor. There is an 8.5% chance (9.5% with Looting I, 10.5% with Looting II and 11.5% with Looting III) that the mob will drop a chestplate upon death. It will usually be badly damaged, and rarely may be enchanted.

Vindicators and Pillagers spawn in raids have a 4.1% chance (5.12% on hard) to drop iron chestplate, It will usually be badly damaged, and may be enchanted.

Natural generation[edit]

Leather tunics can be found in 4.3% of big underwater ruins chests, 8.3% of small underwater ruins chests, 75.0% of buried treasure chests, and 31.8% of village tannery chests, all in groups of 1.

Notes
  1. All enchantments are equally probable, except treasure enchantments, and any level of the enchantment is equally probable.
  2. a b Enchantment probabilities are the same as a level-20 to level-39 enchantment would be on an enchantment table that had no cap at level 30, and that was able to apply treasure enchantments, and where the chance of multiple enchantments is not reduced.

Villagers[edit]

In Java Edition, novice-level armorer villagers have a 40% chance to sell an iron chestplate for 9 emeralds. Journeyman-level armorers have a 40% chance to sell a chainmail chestplate for 4 emeralds. Master-level armorers will always sell an enchanted[note 1] diamond chestplate for 18-35 emeralds. Novice-level leatherworker villagers have a 23 chance to sell a leather tunic[note 2] for 7 emeralds. Journeyman-level Leatherworker villagers will always offer the same trade.

Armorer villagers may give the players with the Hero of the Village effect a chainmail chestplate.

In Bedrock Edition, novice-level armorer villagers have a 25% chance to sell an iron chestplate for 9 emeralds. Journeyman-level armorers have a 13 chance to sell a chainmail chestplate for 4 emeralds. Master-level armorers have a 50% chance to sell an enchanted[note 1] diamond chestplate for 16 emeralds. Novice-level leatherworker villagers have a 50% chance to sell leather tunic for 7 emeralds. Master-level leatherworkers will always sell an enchanted[note 1] leather tunic for 7 emeralds.

In Legacy Console Edition, blacksmith villagers can sell iron chestplates for 10–14 emeralds as one of their second-tier trades, enchanted diamond chestplates for 16–19 emeralds as one of their third tier trades, and chainmail chestplates for 11–15 emeralds as one of their fourth tier trades.

  1. a b c When creating an enchantment offer, the game uses a random enchantment level from 5 – 19. The enchantments are never treasure enchantments.
  2. The leather armor will have a random color created by two dyes (possibly the same dye twice).

Usage[edit]

Chestplates can be placed in the 2nd armor slot of a player's inventory for activation.

Defense points[edit]

Defense points are each signified by chestplates in the armor bar above the health bar. 1 defense point is half of a chestplate in the armor bar. Each defense point will reduce any damage dealt to the player, which is absorbed by armor by 4%, increasing additively with the number of defense points. Different materials and combinations of armor provide different levels of defense.

The following table shows the amount of defense points added by chestplates.

Material
Leather 3 ()
Golden 5 ()
Chainmail 5 ()
Iron 6 ()
Diamond 8 ()

Durability[edit]

The following table shows the amount of damage each piece of armor can absorb before being destroyed.

Any "hit" from a damage source that can be blocked by armor will remove one point of durability from each piece of armor worn. Damage taken that armor doesn't protect (such as falling or drowning) will not damage the armor, even if it is enchanted to protect against that type of damage. The following chart displays how many hits chest plates can endure.

Material
Leather 81
Golden 113
Chainmail/Iron 241
Diamond 529

Repair[edit]

Chestplates may be repaired by using them along with some of their crafting material (leather, gold ingots, iron ingots or diamonds) in an anvil. Chainmail chestplates may be repaired in this way with iron ingots. They may also be repaired by crafting them together with another chestplate of the same material.

Enchantments[edit]

A chestplate can receive the following enchantments:

  1. a b c d Fire Protection, Blast Protection, Projectile Protection and Protection are mutually exclusive.
  2. a b c Only available using enchanted books and an anvil, or by finding an enchanted chestplate in an End city chest.

Please remove this notice once you've added suitable images to the article. The specific instructions are: Armor models from February 12, 2010 ("Added armor models" / "Armor models are displayed on the player in the inventory").
Java Edition Classic
June 14, 2009Notch discussed how armor would work in Survival mode: "Two types of swords, two types of armor, two types of helmets. The basic versions require iron. The advanced versions require steel, which you make by combining iron and coal. Carrying swords, armor or helmets take up inventory slots, but otherwise have no penalty and work pretty much as you expect (prevent some damage, or cause more damage)".
August 13, 2009Notch tested with armor models. Only chestplates and helmets were available. They were merely aesthetic at the time and had no effect on gameplay.
