Name

Grass[n 1] is a non-solid plant block that has wheat seeds as a drop. Its color is biome-dependent, and matches the color of grass blocks.
Tall grass[n 2] is a two-block high variety of grass.
Ferns are variants of grass found only in certain biomes and have the same characteristics as grass.
Large ferns are a two-block high variety of fern.
Shrubs are variants of grass that don't generate naturally and are only found in the Legacy Console Edition. It has the same characteristics as grass and ferns and has the same texture as dead bushes, albeit with a green biome-dependent hue.

Obtaining[edit]

When broken normally, all variants will drop 0 or 1 wheat seeds. See Grass#Wheat seeds for more information. They can be obtained as an item using shears.

The double tall grass and large ferns will drop two of the respective single block when broken using shears.

Wandering traders will sell large ferns.‌[upcoming: JE 1.14 & BE 1.10]

It can also be obtained from the Creative inventory.

Natural generation[edit]

Grass[edit]

Grass generates on grass blocks in most biomes with a grassy soil, like plains or forests. Tall grass generates in plains and savannas.

In 1.14[upcoming] grasses can be found in 45.9% of village house chests in stacks of 1.

Ferns[edit]

Ferns occur naturally only in jungle, taiga, snowy taiga and giant tree taiga biomes. Large ferns generate in the same biomes, excluding jungles. Large ferns can be found in some taiga and snowy taiga village houses.‌[upcoming: JE 1.14 & BE 1.10]

Shrubs[edit]

Shrubs, though identical in appearance to the dead bushes found in deserts and badlands, do not naturally generate and can only be found in the creative inventory.

Bone meal[edit]

Bone meal can be used on a grass block to grow grass, ferns‌[Bedrock Edition only] and occasionally flowers on it and in its vicinity. It can also be used on grass or a fern to create a tall grass or large fern, respectively.

Usage[edit]

Wheat seeds[edit]

All variants of grass have a 1/8 chance of dropping wheat seeds when broken without using shears.

Flower pots[edit]

Ferns can be placed in flower pots.

Composting[edit]

Placing grass into a composter will have a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.‌[upcoming: JE 1.14]

Placing tall grass into a composter has a 50% chance of raising the compost level by 1.‌[upcoming: JE 1.14]

Placing a fern into a composter has a 65% chance of raising the compost level by 1.‌[upcoming: JE 1.14]

1.6 Test Build 3 Tall grass was implemented.[1] Seeds used to be produced by tilling grass blocks prior to this update.
1.6.6 Bone meal can be used to instantly grow tall grass on grass blocks.
1.8 Pre-release Grass and ferns can now be harvested with shears. Previously, tall grass could not be acquired as an item without the use of external tools. Tall grass in the inventory would appear as its grayscale texture, and would appear as the 'shrub' variety or the dead bush when placed.
Swamp biomes have been redesigned and rain forest biomes are removed entirely, so triangular ferns no longer generate.

Trivia[edit]

  • Grass cannot be directly set on fire from lightning. However, fire from nearby blocks can spread to it. Oddly enough, the top of grass can be lit but it will not burn this way. When any kind of tall grass is set on fire, the fire seems to hover just over the grass, as if it were a full block.
  • Even though ferns do not produce seeds in real life, as they emit spores instead, they can drop seeds if broken.
  • Grass is slightly offset from the block it is sitting on (as seen in the second screenshot). This causes fields of grass appear more contiguous and not like dotted patches of hair atop blocks.
    • This can sometimes cause grass to clip horizontally or vertically through block corners.[2]
  • Grass can appear in caves on dirt near lava, and rarely, within a few blocks of bedrock. It can also generate in a village house.
  • Using bone meal on grass in a spawn-protected area on a server will still produce tall grass and flowers.
  • Placing any block on grass will overwrite the grass, and will not drop seeds.
  • When being chased by mobs, hiding in double tallgrass will often cause them to lose sight of players, even if they are a few blocks away. Sugar cane also has this property.
    • This does not apply to Bedrock Edition
